00:04:26.500 --> 00:04:37.600 Or if we do take it seriously, those of us from a more ordinary background such as Presbyterian, which is my background, it's kind of scary. 00:04:38.720 --> 00:04:44.779 Also, if you have read history, you know what troublemakers that Pentecostalists are. 00:04:44.779 --> 00:04:49.479 They have no respect for worldly authority. 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:55.139 And they usually turn into revolutionaries and end up in prison or in the hangman's noose. 00:04:55.579 --> 00:05:01.919 So this Pentecostalism stuff is dangerous, to say the very least. 00:05:02.199 --> 00:05:09.259 Anyway, who wants a huge wind blowing through church or flames of fire appearing in the midst of the congregation? 00:05:09.259 --> 00:05:16.839 It would be reasonable to be kind of afraid of this Pentecostal phenomenon. 00:05:17.199 --> 00:05:22.319 And should we be bothering with it or much less celebrating it on a day like today? 00:05:23.860 --> 00:05:28.180 So I want to share with you three points. 00:05:28.339 --> 00:05:29.519 I mean, this is a sermon, isn't it? 00:05:29.839 --> 00:05:35.300 So I want to say, first of all, I want to talk briefly about don't be afraid of the Holy Spirit. 00:05:35.300 --> 00:05:42.319 And secondly, we who follow Jesus need to know how to cooperate with Holy Spirit. 00:05:42.879 --> 00:05:47.480 And then thirdly, I want to share with you a best kept secret. 00:05:48.180 --> 00:05:50.460 In fact, most preachers don't talk about it at all. 00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:52.660 And there are reasons for that. 00:05:53.379 --> 00:05:56.699 So these are the three things I'd like to share with you briefly today. 00:05:57.379 --> 00:06:01.019 First of all, don't be afraid of the Holy Spirit. 00:06:01.019 --> 00:06:08.560 Could I embarrass you by asking how many of you come from a Pentecostal background after all? 00:06:10.779 --> 00:06:14.099 You see, you have some of these wild revolutionaries in your midst. 00:06:16.839 --> 00:06:28.620 And they're not troubled at all about these things like manifestations of the Holy Spirit or speaking in tongues. 00:06:28.620 --> 00:06:34.579 In fact, some of them may come from churches that think that if you don't speak in tongues, you're not the real McCoy. 00:06:34.740 --> 00:06:35.680 But we won't go there. 00:06:39.639 --> 00:06:44.759 In the 1970s, and most of you weren't even born then, were you? 00:06:47.040 --> 00:06:53.840 There was a movement called the Charismatic Movement across large parts of the church. 00:06:53.839 --> 00:07:02.979 And here in Washington, from time to time, different congregations would kind of light up with the manifestations of the Holy Spirit. 00:07:03.399 --> 00:07:06.399 And there were people who would go wherever the action was. 00:07:06.899 --> 00:07:14.979 And we, those of us who had been Presbyterians, for example, we used to refer to them with some disdain as Beltway Charismatics. 00:07:14.980 --> 00:07:21.980 Because they wanted to have the experience. 00:07:27.680 --> 00:07:32.379 Experience is important, but it's not the main thing. 00:07:32.379 --> 00:07:40.240 And for those of us who may come from kind of a stiff shirt, straight-laced, skeptical, or however you want to describe us poor things, 00:07:40.759 --> 00:07:45.600 who are uneasy about spiritual experience, 00:07:45.980 --> 00:07:48.459 what I want to say is, cool it. 00:07:48.740 --> 00:07:49.860 Don't worry about it. 00:07:50.319 --> 00:07:52.219 The Holy Spirit is a gentleman. 00:07:52.920 --> 00:07:54.759 He's very gentle. 00:07:54.939 --> 00:07:57.139 He does not force himself on anyone. 00:07:57.139 --> 00:08:04.139 And unless people invite him and are waiting on him and ask him to come, 00:08:04.339 --> 00:08:07.139 he usually doesn't show up and scare people to death. 00:08:08.399 --> 00:08:13.039 But he is very much present and at work. 00:08:13.399 --> 00:08:21.519 And so it's really important for us to learn how to cooperate with him. 00:08:21.560 --> 00:08:22.740 And I'm getting ahead of myself. 00:08:22.899 --> 00:08:25.079 I wanted just to touch on one other thing. 00:08:25.079 --> 00:08:34.100 And that is that our Pentecostal charismatic friends will tell you that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are really important 00:08:34.100 --> 00:08:38.960 and that we are all to expect to receive them and use them. 00:08:39.079 --> 00:08:41.079 And I'll get back to that in a minute. 00:08:41.220 --> 00:08:48.360 But this is why I want to say don't be afraid of the Holy Spirit. 00:08:48.559 --> ignore him. 00:09:20.200 --> 00:09:25.240 And certainly those of us who are followers of Jesus shouldn't be in that camp. 00:09:25.820 --> 00:09:30.720 We should be really paying attention to the Holy 00:09:51.560 Whose sins you remit, they are remitted. 00:09:52.240 --> 00:09:54.639 And whose sins you retain, they are retained. 00:09:55.279 --> 00:10:00.779 And as the Father has sent me, so I send you. 00:10:00.779 --> 00:10:12.699 So there's an essential connection between the fact that God sent Jesus into the world to do his work 00:10:12.699 --> 00:10:15.699 and Jesus sends us into the world. 00:10:16.039 --> 00:10:24.399 And the only way that we can be of any use at all is if we are cooperating any use at all to God 00:10:24.399 --> 00:10:31.399 is by cooperating with the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of Truth, 00:10:32.840 --> 00:10:37.779 which is a really shocking thing to say in Washington, D.C., 00:10:37.779 --> 00:10:39.699 especially during the election season. 00:10:40.860 --> 00:10:44.059 Nobody believes there is any such thing as truth. 00:10:44.399 --> 00:10:46.399 Certainly not in the political process. 00:10:46.399 --> 00:10:50.399 And our culture tends to think that all truth is relative anyway. 00:10:51.120 --> 00:10:52.879 Your truth is yours and mine is mine. 00:10:53.059 --> 00:10:55.959 And whether they connect or not doesn't make any difference. 00:10:56.340 --> 00:11:00.860 And that's a lot of baloney. 00:11:02.120 --> 00:11:06.459 The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth. 00:11:07.100 --> 00:11:08.639 What does he do? 00:11:09.120 --> 00:11:11.620 What's the connection between Spirit and Truth? 00:11:11.620 --> 00:11:17.740 Well, the first thing is suggested by today's gospel. 00:11:18.440 --> 00:11:26.279 Philip, one of the Greek-speaking disciples, comes to Jesus and says, 00:11:27.259 --> 00:11:29.840 Lord, show us the Father. 00:11:30.700 --> 00:11:34.799 And Jesus says to him, have you been with me all this time, Philip? 00:11:34.799 --> 00:11:42.779 And you do not realize that if you have seen me, you have seen the Father. 00:11:43.539 --> 00:11:49.159 The primary, the first job that the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth does, 00:11:49.559 --> 00:11:54.319 is to enable us to recognize God in Jesus. 00:11:55.159 --> 00:12:02.139 That the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Yahweh, the God of Israel, Emmanuel, 00:12:02.139 --> 00:12:07.319 comes among us in the human life of this peasant from Galilee. 00:12:07.740 --> 00:12:13.519 It's the Holy Spirit that enables us to say, yeah, that makes sense to me. 00:12:13.840 --> 00:12:14.659 I got it. 00:12:14.840 --> 00:12:15.779 That's terrific. 00:12:16.600 --> 00:12:18.960 This is the work of the Holy Spirit. 00:12:19.080 --> 00:12:21.679 I think as Peter said, nobody can say, or is it Paul? 00:12:22.279 --> 00:12:28.279 No one can say Jesus is Lord apart from the Holy Spirit. 00:12:28.279 --> 00:12:34.360 So that's the first thing and the most basic and important thing that the Spirit of Truth does. 00:12:34.539 --> 00:12:39.439 The second thing that he does is he leads us into all truth. 00:12:40.339 --> 00:12:45.720 One of the most touching things I think that Jesus said to his disciples when he was about to leave them 00:12:45.720 --> 00:12:53.100 was said, I have so much to say to you now, but you cannot bear it all right now. 00:12:54.019 --> 00:12:55.839 And I think that's true of all of us. 00:12:55.840 --> 00:13:02.259 A lot of you are raising little kids, and you know you have to speak their language, 00:13:02.399 --> 00:13:05.759 and there's only so much that they can understand at one time. 00:13:06.120 --> 00:13:11.519 And over the years, they gradually are able to understand more and more. 00:13:12.120 --> 00:13:17.300 And by the time they get past adolescence, they realize that you're not as stupid as they thought you were. 00:13:17.299 --> 00:13:24.219 But there is a process of being able to apprehend the truth. 00:13:24.740 --> 00:13:29.500 So it is the Holy Spirit all through our lives, all through the maturation process, 00:13:29.719 --> 00:13:33.979 that enables us to recognize truth. 00:13:35.059 --> 00:13:40.219 And this is really important because the truth that we're talking about is our worldview, 00:13:40.220 --> 00:13:50.879 our perception of reality, and not having a realistic, true worldview is the definition, I think, of mental illness. 00:13:50.879 --> 00:13:57.939 And that's where an awful lot of our fellow human beings are. 00:14:04.340 --> 00:14:09.059 More, well, I shouldn't say more important, just as important. 00:14:09.179 --> 00:14:15.419 Third thing that the Holy Spirit does is enables us to speak the truth in love. 00:14:15.419 --> 00:14:22.240 Now, our culture, well, I come from suburban Chicago, 00:14:22.740 --> 00:14:29.139 and we were all taught to be polite and to not get into any kind of conflict. 00:14:29.879 --> 00:14:36.419 I was told, at least at the dinner table, never to talk about religion, politics, sex, or money. 00:14:37.039 --> 00:14:39.839 So, you know, what use is there to talk about anything at all? 00:14:41.919 --> 00:14:44.779 But the main thing was to avoid conflict. 00:14:44.779 --> 00:14:55.659 And there are some congregations that function as though table manners were the absolute top priority norms, 00:14:56.000 --> 00:14:58.980 and that you have to avoid conflict at all costs. 00:14:59.500 --> 00:15:06.240 And I know some clergy, basically, who have gotten fired from congregations 00:15:06.240 --> 00:15:12.019 because they were not able to suppress or avoid conflict in the life of the congregation. 00:15:12.019 --> 00:15:19.620 I have the audacity of believing, for example, that the job of the preacher is to comfort the afflicted 00:15:19.620 --> 00:15:21.819 and afflict the comfortable. 00:15:22.740 --> 00:15:23.500 But the comfortable... 00:15:23.500 --> 00:15:29.340 The comfortable do not like to be afflicted. 00:15:29.399 --> 00:15:34.279 And if they think you're paying your salary to keep them comfy, you're in trouble, gentlemen. 00:15:34.279 --> 00:15:47.799 But we have been given the spirit of truth, 00:15:48.259 --> 00:15:54.919 and if we're paying attention to him, he will enable us to speak the truth in love. 00:15:54.919 --> 00:15:59.979 And this is a skill, of course, that all married couples desperately need to learn. 00:16:00.740 --> 00:16:07.219 We need to be able to speak truth to one another, 00:16:07.519 --> 00:16:14.039 but not in order to win or assert dominance over the other, 00:16:14.419 --> 00:16:16.799 but in order to establish relationship. 00:16:16.979 --> 00:16:18.699 And, of course, this isn't just in the family. 00:16:18.700 --> 00:16:25.379 The definition of sin that I find most useful is sin is broken relationship. 00:16:26.600 --> 00:16:29.620 Sin is not, first of all, bad morality. 00:16:29.900 --> 00:16:32.759 It is, first of all, broken relationship. 00:16:33.580 --> 00:16:38.820 And we've all been there, done that, and struggled with it all the time. 00:16:39.860 --> 00:16:46.240 Truth speaking in love enables them, 00:17:03.879 --> 00:17:07.120 because I think this is where the action is, by the way. 00:17:07.519 --> 00:17:12.980 And if you want to have or recognize the work of the Holy Spirit from day to that this may be the Spirit speaking to us, then we should act on it. 00:20:28.299 --> 00:20:35.639 And if it is the Spirit, one of the proofs is that doors open, to use that very familiar metaphor.
