Looking at the life of Daniel. 00:00:18.240 --> 00:00:24.480 Now, I wonder this morning if, like me, sometimes you wonder, 00:00:24.480 --> 00:00:28.280 well, I love the story of Daniel. 00:00:28.480 --> 00:00:29.780 It's one of my favorites. 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:35.980 I love learning about Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, and how God used them. 00:00:36.439 --> 00:00:39.120 But I wonder, really, what is the connection? 00:00:39.960 --> 00:00:44.799 I mean, after all, Babylon is literally thousands of miles away, 00:00:44.880 --> 00:00:50.820 and in a time that was a couple thousand years from today, 00:00:50.820 --> 00:00:58.060 how relevant, really, is the message and the life that we learn about in this book? 00:00:58.060 --> 00:01:06.939 So as we look into the Word of God, as we come to understand the God who is the same yesterday, 00:01:07.219 --> 00:01:12.040 today, and forever, really the purpose of looking at the Old Testament 00:01:12.040 --> 00:01:20.280 is for us to come to terms with the fact that the God of Daniel in 600 B.C. 00:01:20.280 --> 00:01:30.180 in Babylon is the same God of 2024 here in America. 00:01:30.180 --> 00:01:37.560 And the truths and the principles of that God, the character of that God, 00:01:37.560 --> 00:01:40.760 the things that were true for Daniel, 00:01:41.240 --> 00:01:47.160 in helping him navigate the situations and the circumstances that he encountered, 00:01:47.160 --> 00:01:49.719 are the same truths that we need today. 00:01:49.719 --> 00:02:00.039 And the God who was evident in the life of Daniel in seeking to reveal himself to King Nebuchadnezzar 00:02:00.039 --> 00:02:05.960 is the same God who seeks to make himself known through your life, 00:02:06.159 --> 00:02:09.099 your witness, your testimony in the here and now. 00:02:09.099 --> 00:02:16.759 I think about today we're going to learn about the God of wisdom, the God who is wise. 00:02:18.379 --> 00:02:22.479 And as I consider the fact that God is wise, 00:02:23.039 --> 00:02:26.259 and especially as it relates to our culture today, 00:02:27.199 --> 00:02:33.459 I think about the fact that there could be no greater truth for our culture today 00:02:33.460 --> 00:02:38.000 than understanding a God who is wise, a God of wisdom. 00:02:39.180 --> 00:02:41.800 After all, the world wants answers. 00:02:42.439 --> 00:02:46.780 The world wants to make sense of the things that are happening in their here and now. 00:02:47.260 --> 00:02:49.640 The world wants to know where they belong. 00:02:50.159 --> 00:02:53.020 They want to know how to find happiness in this life. 00:02:53.740 --> 00:02:58.400 And even in this week, as I was kind of considering and researching 00:02:58.400 --> 00:03:02.400 some of the main questions that are asked of contemporary culture, 00:03:02.400 --> 00:03:07.719 here are some of the questions that this world is seeking to find answers to. 00:03:08.360 --> 00:03:10.580 First, how did life begin? 00:03:11.860 --> 00:03:13.460 What is the purpose of life? 00:03:14.020 --> 00:03:15.520 Are we alone in the universe? 00:03:16.439 --> 00:03:17.819 What makes us humans? 00:03:18.540 --> 00:03:20.159 What is consciousness? 00:03:21.259 --> 00:03:22.439 Can we live forever? 00:03:22.920 --> 00:03:25.319 What happens after you die? 00:03:26.319 --> 00:03:31.740 And of course, as the world is searching for answers to these important questions, 00:03:31.740 --> 00:03:36.219 we as God's servants, as God's people, 00:03:36.480 --> 00:03:41.159 have those answers because we know the God who authored it all. 00:03:41.659 --> 00:03:43.100 The God who is all-wise. 00:03:43.240 --> 00:03:44.920 The God who is over all. 00:03:45.500 --> 00:03:50.040 And as agents of God's revelation, 00:03:50.300 --> 00:03:54.879 the word of God that comes through the lips of his people, 00:03:54.879 --> 00:03:58.400 we are able to be the gateway, as it were, 00:03:59.199 --> 00:04:04.299 to help point and direct people to come to see and to understand 00:04:04.299 --> 00:04:08.740 and encounter in some way the God who is all-wise, 00:04:08.960 --> 00:04:10.060 who is over all. 00:04:11.960 --> 00:04:14.979 We have this incredible opportunity, 00:04:15.419 --> 00:04:16.740 this incredible privilege, 00:04:16.740 --> 00:04:20.180 as Daniel has and his friends had, 00:04:20.480 --> 00:04:24.660 to be the catalyst for the gospel, as it were, 00:04:24.660 --> 00:04:31.300 the catalyst for bringing the understanding of who God is in contemporary culture. 00:04:32.439 --> 00:04:36.060 There is something that we would be familiar with 00:04:36.060 --> 00:04:38.100 as it relates to conventional wisdom. 00:04:38.840 --> 00:04:41.819 Conventional wisdom is defined this way, 00:04:41.819 --> 00:04:42.620 quote, 00:04:42.699 --> 00:04:49.839 the body of ideas or explanations generally accepted by the public and or experts in a field. 00:04:50.599 --> 00:04:54.259 And so there is conventional wisdom as it relates to things like health 00:04:54.259 --> 00:04:59.439 and parenting and investment and education and business or employment. 00:05:00.600 --> 00:05:03.139 But there is a wisdom that is settled. 00:05:03.740 --> 00:05:05.420 There is a wisdom that is sure, 00:05:05.719 --> 00:05:07.259 a wisdom that is fixed, 00:05:07.259 --> 00:05:12.560 not the conventional wisdom that changes in generation after generation, 00:05:12.959 --> 00:05:14.860 but a wisdom that is firm 00:05:14.860 --> 00:05:19.219 because it is a wisdom that comes from the unchangeable God. 00:05:20.039 --> 00:05:23.759 And it is a wisdom that this world can only come to understand 00:05:23.759 --> 00:05:26.000 and know as the people of God. 00:05:28.659 --> 00:05:30.579 Embrace the wisdom of God 00:05:30.579 --> 00:05:33.819 and reflect that wisdom to the world. 00:05:33.819 --> 00:05:39.800 Paul speaks about that wisdom in 1 Timothy 1, verses 15 and 17. 00:05:40.519 --> 00:05:41.579 When he says this, 00:05:41.579 --> 00:05:45.699 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance 00:05:45.699 --> 00:05:49.699 that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, 00:05:50.019 --> 00:05:51.100 of whom I am chief. 00:05:51.759 --> 00:05:53.659 However, for this reason I obtain mercy, 00:05:54.000 --> 00:05:58.560 that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering 00:05:58.560 --> 00:06:03.300 as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life. 00:06:03.819 --> 00:06:08.319 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, 00:06:08.980 --> gospel 00:06:25.539 --> 00:06:27.199 and the preaching of Jesus Christ, 00:06:27.279 --> 00:06:29.779 according to the revelation of the mystery 00:06:29.779 --> 00:06:31.939 that was kept secret for long ages, 00:06:32.199 --> 00:06:34.819 but has now been disclosed 00:06:34.819 --> 00:06:38.199 and through the prophetic writings has been made known 00:06:38.199 --> 00:06:39.379 to all nations, 00:06:40.060 --> 00:06:42.039 according to the command of the eternal God, 00:06:42.039 --> 00:06:44.860 to bring about the obedience of faith 00:06:44.860 --> 00:06:49.639 to the only wise God be glory forevermore 00:06:49.639 --> 00:06:51.199 through Jesus Christ. 00:06:51.500 --> 00:06:51.699 Amen. 00:06:53.040 --> 00:06:55.900 The wisdom that is available to the world 00:06:55.900 --> 00:06:59.080 is a wisdom that comes from God alone 00:06:59.080 --> 00:07:02.920 and it only comes through the gateway of the gospel. 00:07:03.139 --> 00:07:07.540 We are the conduit of wisdom to the world 00:07:07.540 --> 00:07:09.500 through the message of wisdom 00:07:09.500 --> 00:07:11.939 that is the gospel of God. 00:07:11.939 --> 00:07:16.019 Do you know the wisdom of God? 00:07:16.100 --> 00:07:18.259 Do you know the God of wisdom? 00:07:18.879 --> 00:07:21.240 And is your life so centered, 00:07:21.519 --> 00:07:23.899 so aligned to the wisdom of God 00:07:23.899 --> 00:07:27.420 that it is evident in how you live? 00:07:27.779 --> 00:07:29.620 It's evident in the decisions you make. 00:07:29.620 --> 00:07:32.680 It's evident in the priorities that you set 00:07:32.680 --> 00:07:34.980 that when people see you, 00:07:35.120 --> 00:07:37.759 they see the wisdom of God. 00:07:39.879 --> 00:07:41.860 The challenge so often 00:07:41.860 --> 00:07:44.199 is that our lives 00:07:44.199 --> 00:07:46.280 seem so unsettled 00:07:46.280 --> 00:07:48.980 in following after the wisdom of this world 00:07:48.980 --> 00:07:51.259 rather than following after the wisdom of God. 00:07:52.780 --> 00:07:54.819 And we're going to see from the life of Daniel 00:07:54.819 --> 00:07:57.020 that Daniel becomes 00:07:57.020 --> 00:08:00.460 a faithful servant of God 00:08:00.460 --> 00:08:02.020 to Nebuchadnezzar 00:08:02.020 --> 00:08:04.560 by helping to point and direct 00:08:04.560 --> 00:08:05.800 Nebuchadnezzar's heart 00:08:05.800 --> 00:08:08.620 to see the one true God, 00:08:08.699 --> 00:08:09.800 the God of wisdom 00:08:09.800 --> 00:08:11.180 through his life. 00:08:11.259 --> 00:08:12.139 And it comes, 00:08:12.259 --> 00:08:13.759 we're going to see this morning, 00:08:14.220 --> 00:08:15.699 through a character 00:08:15.699 --> 00:08:18.420 that believes in God 00:08:18.420 --> 00:08:20.639 and reflects the character 00:08:20.639 --> 00:08:21.800 of God in the world. 00:08:23.259 --> 00:08:23.860 And as Daniel 00:08:23.860 --> 00:08:25.900 believes and trusts 00:08:25.900 --> 00:08:26.819 in the wisdom of God, 00:08:27.259 --> 00:08:29.420 and as he embraces that wisdom 00:08:29.420 --> 00:08:31.480 and applies it to his life, 00:08:31.840 --> 00:08:33.259 he becomes a gateway 00:08:33.259 --> 00:08:34.480 for Nebuchadnezzar 00:08:34.480 --> 00:08:36.480 to actually see God 00:08:36.480 --> 00:08:37.820 and God's wisdom. 00:08:38.600 --> 00:08:39.680 In the same way, 00:08:40.500 --> 00:08:42.000 we can be the same catalyst, 00:08:42.820 --> 00:08:43.800 the same gateway 00:08:43.800 --> 00:08:46.159 for the people of this world 00:08:46.159 --> 00:08:47.820 to encounter and experience 00:08:48.440 --> 00:08:49.519 the God of wisdom 00:08:49.519 --> 00:08:53.220 as we follow Daniel's example. 00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:55.279 So I hope you're already there. 00:08:55.639 --> 00:08:57.440 Turn with me to Daniel chapter 2. 00:08:58.139 --> 00:08:59.800 We're going to begin our study this morning 00:08:59.799 --> 00:09:01.339 in verse 16. 00:09:02.259 --> 00:09:02.979 And we're going to see 00:09:02.979 --> 00:09:03.559 that Daniel 00:09:03.559 --> 00:09:05.439 will consistently point 00:09:05.439 --> 00:09:06.659 to the God of wisdom. 00:09:08.120 --> 00:09:09.779 Our first point this morning 00:09:09.779 --> 00:09:10.799 is that Daniel's, 00:09:10.979 --> 00:09:11.299 excuse me, 00:09:11.379 --> 00:09:12.439 God's wisdom 00:09:12.439 --> 00:09:13.919 is made known 00:09:13.919 --> 00:09:15.419 through Daniel's faith. 00:09:16.479 --> 00:09:17.439 God's wisdom 00:09:17.439 --> 00:09:18.500 is made known 00:09:18.500 --> 00:09:19.500 through Daniel's faith. 00:09:19.579 --> 00:09:19.919 Notice 00:09:19.919 --> 00:09:21.339 in verse 16. 00:09:21.340 --> 00:09:23.780 And Daniel went in 00:09:23.780 --> 00:09:25.800 and requested the king 00:09:25.800 --> 00:09:26.800 to appoint him a time 00:09:26.800 --> 00:09:28.740 that he might show 00:09:28.740 --> 00:09:29.399 the interpretation 00:09:29.399 --> 00:09:30.280 to the king. 00:09:31.060 --> 00:09:32.280 Then Daniel went to his house 00:09:32.280 --> 00:09:33.399 and made the matter 00:09:33.399 --> 00:09:34.460 known to Hananiah, 00:09:34.800 --> 00:09:35.200 Mishael, 00:09:35.320 --> 00:09:35.899 and Azariah, 00:09:35.960 --> 00:09:36.519 his companions, 00:09:37.300 --> 00:09:38.000 and told them 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:38.920 to seek mercy 00:09:38.920 --> 00:09:39.820 from the God of heaven 00:09:39.820 --> 00:09:41.200 concerning this mystery 00:09:41.200 --> 00:09:42.519 so that Daniel 00:09:42.519 --> 00:09:43.399 and his companions 00:09:43.399 --> 00:09:45.080 might not be destroyed 00:09:45.080 --> 00:09:45.720 with the rest 00:09:45.720 --> 00:09:47.100 of the wise men of Babylon. 00:09:48.019 --> 00:09:48.540 Then the mystery 00:09:48.540 --> 00:09:49.519 was revealed to Daniel 00:09:49.519 --> 00:09:50.080 in a vision 00:09:57.120 in this 00:09:57.120 --> 00:09:58.980 short couple of verses 00:09:58.980 --> 00:10:00.080 we see the faith 00:10:00.080 --> 00:10:00.980 of Daniel 00:10:00.980 --> 00:10:01.740 in his friends. 00:10:02.040 --> 00:10:02.399 First, 00:10:02.540 --> 00:10:03.580 the faith of Daniel 00:10:03.580 --> 00:10:05.220 in standing before the king. 00:10:06.440 --> 00:10:07.960 Daniel has committed himself 00:10:07.960 --> 00:10:08.960 to see 00:10:08.960 --> 00:10:10.860 that God is in 00:10:10.860 --> 00:10:12.300 these circumstances. 00:10:12.540 --> 00:10:13.240 God is in 00:10:13.240 --> 00:10:14.240 this vision. 00:10:14.639 --> 00:10:15.400 He recognizes 00:10:15.400 --> 00:10:16.960 that God is orchestrating 00:10:16.960 --> 00:10:18.100 even these 00:10:18.100 --> 00:10:19.220 very events 00:10:19.220 --> 00:10:20.180 to showcase 00:10:20.179 --> 00:10:21.559 the wonder 00:10:21.559 --> 00:10:22.299 of who God is, 00:10:22.359 --> 00:10:22.899 the wisdom 00:10:22.899 --> 00:10:23.799 of God. 00:10:24.139 --> 00:10:25.159 And Daniel sees 00:10:25.159 --> 00:10:26.259 and understands 00:10:26.259 --> 00:10:27.039 and is willing 00:10:27.039 --> 00:10:27.819 in faith 00:10:27.819 --> 00:10:29.500 to be a representative 00:10:29.500 --> 00:10:30.559 of the God 00:10:30.559 --> 00:10:31.620 of wisdom 00:10:31.620 --> 00:10:33.019 by standing 00:10:33.019 --> 00:10:34.059 before the king. 00:10:35.339 --> 00:10:36.279 If you were here 00:10:36.279 --> 00:10:36.799 last week, 00:10:36.859 --> 00:10:37.679 you recognize 00:10:37.679 --> 00:10:38.819 or know 00:10:38.819 --> 00:10:39.799 that Nebuchadnezzar 00:10:39.799 --> 00:10:40.319 had a dream. 00:10:40.639 --> 00:10:41.859 That dream begins 00:10:41.859 --> 00:10:42.500 there in 00:10:42.500 --> 00:10:43.519 the first parts 00:10:43.519 --> 00:10:44.120 of the chapter. 00:10:44.120 --> 00:10:45.820 And Nebuchadnezzar 00:10:45.820 --> 00:10:46.639 has come to 00:10:46.639 --> 00:10:47.399 appreciate 00:10:47.399 --> 00:10:48.139 or recognize 00:10:48.139 --> 00:10:48.720 the fact 00:10:48.720 --> 00:10:49.679 that this dream 00:10:49.679 --> 00:10:50.759 is not something 00:10:50.759 --> 00:10:51.560 that is 00:10:51.560 --> 00:10:53.600 of himself. 00:10:53.779 --> 00:10:54.620 It is something 00:10:54.620 --> 00:10:55.440 that is significant. 00:10:55.779 --> 00:10:56.539 He recognizes 00:10:56.539 --> 00:10:57.340 that this dream 00:10:57.340 --> 00:10:57.840 has come 00:10:57.840 --> 00:10:58.799 from beyond, 00:10:59.179 --> 00:10:59.899 from the gods 00:10:59.899 --> 00:11:00.500 as it were. 00:11:00.799 --> 00:11:01.279 And actually, 00:11:01.639 --> 00:11:02.360 it came from 00:11:02.360 --> 00:11:03.060 the God 00:11:03.060 --> 00:11:04.080 of 00:11:11.659 he calls them in 00:11:11.659 --> 00:11:13.279 and asks them 00:11:13.279 --> 00:11:13.959 to tell him 00:11:13.959 --> 00:11:14.959 what the dream is 00:11:14.959 --> 00:11:16.019 so that he can 00:11:16.019 --> 00:11:16.639 know for sure 00:11:16.639 --> 00:11:17.579 that they also 00:11:17.579 --> 00:11:18.779 understand 00:11:18.779 --> 00:11:19.899 the interpretation. 00:11:21.159 --> 00:11:22.219 The king understands 00:11:22.219 --> 00:11:22.740 and knows 00:11:22.740 --> 00:11:24.879 that his request 00:11:24.879 --> 00:11:26.240 to the counselors 00:11:26.240 --> 00:11:27.620 is impossible. 00:11:29.079 --> 00:11:30.259 But he doesn't want 00:11:30.259 --> 00:11:31.500 an approximate answer. 00:11:32.299 --> 00:11:32.879 He wants 00:11:32.879 --> 00:12:46.579 --> 00:12:48.299 his servant, 00:12:48.840 --> 00:12:50.019 God is calling out 00:12:50.019 --> 00:12:51.179 Daniel and his friends 00:12:51.179 --> 00:12:53.199 in this unique way
