that I was already thinking about as far as this pathway goes, many of those things were reinforced this week as I began to look at this week's passage. 00:00:35.560 --> 00:00:46.679 After a number of chapters of theology and right doctrine, we get to some of the applications that all of that theology brings to our life this week. 00:00:46.679 --> 00:00:51.780 And the text that we're in today has a couple of options of teaching through it, in my opinion. 00:00:51.840 --> 00:01:00.439 I'm sure there's many, but one of those is to take three or four weeks and gradually go through some of these things and really dive in deep to some of these things. 00:01:00.719 --> 00:01:13.180 But the other option that we're going to be taking today is kind of taking a step back and seeing the overview and blood of Jesus. 00:03:33.360 --> 00:03:38.819 You see, for the last nine chapters, the author has been showing us the supremacy of Christ. 00:03:38.819 --> 00:03:44.879 How Christ is so much better than anything and everything in this world. 00:03:44.879 --> 00:03:47.120 And sharing the good news of the gospel. 00:03:47.500 --> 00:03:53.780 Now, as he gets ready to give us some application and also share some strong warnings, 00:03:54.079 --> 00:03:57.780 he gives us a very quick recap of the gospel. 00:03:58.099 --> 00:04:04.479 He gives us a very quick overview and review of what we've already been learning for nine chapters 00:04:04.479 --> 00:04:09.680 and wants to make this very clear as we get ready to apply this to our lives. 00:04:09.680 --> 00:04:10.460 He says, 00:04:10.460 --> 00:04:16.300 We have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus. 00:04:16.800 --> 00:04:25.780 We have seen the author make it very clear that the holy place here doesn't just refer to the most holy place in the tabernacle or the temple, 00:04:26.240 --> 00:04:29.780 that part that only the high priest could go behind once a year. 00:04:29.779 --> 00:04:35.099 But he's telling us very clearly that Jesus doesn't just enter into the shadow. 00:04:35.559 --> 00:04:37.279 He doesn't just enter into the cup. 00:04:37.319 --> 00:04:43.259 He goes into the real place, the real presence of God to secure our forgiveness. 00:04:43.919 --> 00:04:48.000 And it says he went through the curtain, that is, through his flesh. 00:04:48.519 --> 00:04:56.779 You see, the thick curtain in the tabernacle stood as a constant reminder that our sin has separated us from God. 00:04:56.779 --> 00:04:59.139 That we can't enter into his presence. 00:04:59.279 --> 00:05:04.439 And so it tells us that Christ went through the curtain, that is, through his flesh. 00:05:04.519 --> 00:05:10.019 And so when Christ's flesh was torn for you, the temple curtain was also torn. 00:05:10.279 --> 00:05:12.959 Now, this actually happened in history. 00:05:13.099 --> 00:05:18.759 It actually happened at the death of Christ where the temple curtain was torn in two. 00:05:18.899 --> 00:05:22.119 It was a physical sign of a spiritual reality. 00:05:22.120 --> 00:05:29.319 Now, because of Christ, you and I, as believers, can walk straight into the most holy place. 00:05:29.860 --> 00:05:36.620 We, as believers, because of what Christ has secured for us, can go straight into the presence of God. 00:05:36.620 --> 00:05:44.199 And this is not because of our worthiness, of our actions, but it's because of the worthiness of the sacrifice. 00:05:45.120 --> 00:05:48.879 Because Christ made this sacrifice for us. 00:05:48.879 --> 00:05:55.219 You see, one of the things that Hebrews does beautifully is to show us the uniqueness of Christ. 00:05:55.740 --> 00:06:01.779 He was uniquely qualified to make a permanent and lasting sacrifice for us. 00:06:02.480 --> 00:06:08.079 Jesus was uniquely qualified to pay for our sins because he is both God and man. 00:06:08.600 --> 00:06:14.019 You see, in order for him to make a perfect sacrifice for us that would be enough forever, 00:06:14.019 --> 00:06:18.379 that wouldn't require another sacrifice to be made over and over again, 00:06:18.379 --> 00:06:23.919 like the priests of the Old Testament, in order for this sacrifice to be enough to be done, 00:06:24.299 --> 00:06:26.859 then he would have to be God. 00:06:27.099 --> 00:06:33.379 In order to bridge the infinite chasm between us and God would require an infinite sacrifice. 00:06:34.439 --> 00:06:37.719 But we also see that this person would have to be human. 00:06:37.720 --> 00:06:43.960 Like us, familiar with our shortcomings, understanding what we're going through in this life, 00:06:43.960 --> 00:06:49.740 in order to pay the price for humanity, he would have to step into humanity. 00:06:50.560 --> 00:06:56.300 And so we also see that this person would have to be perfect in order to make a sacrifice. 00:06:56.800 --> 00:07:02.500 Because if he was not perfect, then a sacrifice would have to be made for him, 00:07:02.640 --> 00:07:04.460 much like the priests of the Old Testament. 00:07:04.459 --> 00:07:08.779 And so what we see very clearly as we work our way through the book of Hebrews 00:07:08.779 --> 00:07:14.839 is that the sacrifice to pay for our sins, to pay for our sins once and for all, 00:07:14.919 --> 00:07:19.219 that wouldn't require a constant sacrifice, that would have to be made over and over again, 00:07:19.219 --> 00:07:25.379 would require this person to be God, would be like man, and also to be perfect. 00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:29.519 And so what we very clearly see is there's only one. 00:07:30.060 --> 00:07:31.399 There's only one God, man. 00:07:31.399 --> 00:07:35.939 And there's only one who is God, man, and perfect, and that is Jesus. 00:07:36.560 --> 00:07:41.399 And so it makes him uniquely Packer, speaking on this incarnation, he knows, he says, 00:07:45.300 --> 00:07:52.660 Hebrew stresses that had he not thus experienced human pressures, weakness, temptation, pain, 00:07:52.780 --> 00:07:56.740 he would not be qualified to help us as we go through these things. 00:07:56.879 --> 00:08:04.199 As it is, his human experience is such as to guarantee that in every moment of demand and pressure 00:08:04.199 --> 00:08:09.340 in our relationship and walk with God, we may go to him. 00:08:09.339 --> 00:08:16.179 Confident that in some sense, he has been there before us, and so is the accomplished as we look through this, 00:08:36.240 --> 00:08:42.759 is to see that Jesus is not only enough for us, but Jesus is available to us. 00:08:43.139 --> 00:08:46.939 Not only is he enough for us, but he is available to us. 00:08:46.980 --> 00:08:54.879 We are all dead in our sins, but the sacrifice on the cross is enough for all of us to be able to come to God, 00:08:55.019 --> 00:08:57.980 for all of us to be able to come to him. 00:08:57.980 --> 00:09:04.480 And so next, the author gives some application to this understanding of who Jesus is 00:09:04.480 --> 00:09:07.680 and how we should follow him and how we should know him. 00:09:07.940 --> 00:09:14.039 And so once we know the gospel, once we know Jesus, we are called to follow Jesus. 00:09:14.519 --> 00:09:15.779 Jesus, 00:10:11.879 --> 00:10:12.460 it says, 00:10:12.460 --> 00:10:15.139 let us draw near. 00:10:15.620 --> 00:10:19.000 And it says to let us draw near with true hearts. 00:10:19.800 --> 00:10:22.220 The passage tells us that as believers, 00:10:22.860 --> 00:10:26.940 our hearts are sprinkled clean from an evil conscience. 00:10:27.460 --> 00:10:27.820 You see, 00:10:27.879 --> 00:10:29.080 under the old covenant, 00:10:29.560 --> 00:10:32.879 the priest would take the sacrifice of these animals 00:10:32.879 --> 00:10:37.560 and they would sprinkle objects in the temple with the blood in order to cleanse them. 00:10:37.559 --> 00:10:39.219 And in order to make them pure, 00:10:39.339 --> 00:10:42.639 they would sprinkle the blood of the sacrifices on these things.
