That is one part of what we do. Mission Manifests the Kingdom. 00:01:52.099 --> 00:02:01.019 Often when I'm out speaking at universities or doing evangelism events and sharing the truth and the relevance of Christianity, 00:02:01.019 --> 00:02:06.379 there is a question that comes up more often than I would like. And it is this. 00:02:06.379 --> 00:02:16.639 Why do you Christians feel that you have to share what you believe? Why go and tell other people? Why not just leave them alone? 00:02:17.379 --> 00:02:25.900 Recently I made a short video that was shared on several platforms and in the comments section in one of those platforms was that very question. 00:02:26.620 --> 00:02:31.579 And so it's something that happens regularly. But it's something that I've been seeing for many, many years. 00:02:31.580 --> 00:02:44.240 When I was still in South Africa at the church there, there was a team that used to go out and do ministry on the streets of Johannesburg to ladies who were working on the streets, prostitutes. 00:02:44.840 --> 00:02:50.380 And they would go out and interact with these ladies and share the hope of the gospel with them. 00:02:51.100 --> 00:02:55.740 And so I decided that this sounded like something I was very keen to go and do. 00:02:55.860 --> 00:02:58.600 And so a few times I went out and joined She opened up about her broken family background and all of the things that had happened to her in her life to reach that point of being on the streets of Johannesburg. 00:03:17.099 --> 00:03:18.479 And it was a great conversation. 00:03:18.780 --> 00:03:27.519 We had the opportunity to share the gospel with her, the hope of Jesus Christ, the good news of forgiveness of sins and new life with telling us about the struggle and that she was doing this to put food on the table for her children who thought that she was actually off doing waitressing work somewhere. 00:04:48.199 --> the next thing, searching and searching, be it money or broken relationships or throwing themselves at work, 00:05:40.620 --> 00:05:46.279 thinking that is where they will find satisfaction and that we have remaining together this evening, I'd love to share just some thoughts on that. 00:06:20.459 --> 00:06:24.600 And we've had this wonderful scripture from the Sermon on the Mount that's so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. 00:07:08.740 --> 00:07:13.040 So, Jesus has been teaching in this section of the Sermon on the Mount. 00:07:13.160 These are amazing words from our Lord. 00:07:57.300 --> 00:08:00.500 And Jesus, he uses such simple illustrations, I think. 00:08:00.500 --> 00:08:04.579 But the point that he makes comes with great means that you shine for the glory of God. 00:10:31.620 --> 00:10:45.759 So that when others see that light manifest in the world, they would be so drawn that they could not but come to me and glorify my name and live in the light of God's glorious kingdom. 00:10:46.139 --> 00:10:50.720 That is the point of what Jesus is saying, commissioning us to go out. 00:10:50.720 --> 00:11:02.379 And so with that purpose and with that calling in mind, I think here are just three points that I'd like you to consider as we think of this idea of mission manifesting the kingdom. 00:11:03.240 --> 00:11:04.000 the emissaries of the kingdom, which I will then explain. 00:11:15.220 --> 00:11:18.240 So the first, the hope, sorry, the reality of the kingdom. 00:11:18.240 --> 00:11:22.299 What is this kingdom 00:11:32.139 So hopefully I'm just going to unpack it for you just a little and touch on what is a very, very big theological concept. 00:11:32.840 --> 00:11:39.279 If we look at Jesus' words about life in the kingdom, as we've heard just a portion of from the Sermon on the Mount, 00:11:39.680 --> 00:11:47.000 it's a good thing, I think, to pause and say what is it that we're actually speaking about or thinking about when Jesus uses this terminology. 00:11:47.000 --> 00:11:54.580 It's important because when we look at the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, these biographies of Jesus' life and ministry, 00:11:55.080 --> 00:12:03.960 we, I think, are inescapably confronted with the fact that Jesus' message was that the kingdom has come. 00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:05.500 Interesting. 00:12:05.820 --> 00:12:07.340 Matthew 4.17 says, 00:12:07.340 --> 00:12:17.800 Mark 1.14 and 15 says, 00:12:17.800 --> 00:12:23.519 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God and saying, 00:12:23.920 --> 00:12:25.019 The time is fulfilled. 00:12:25.440 --> 00:12:27.360 The kingdom of God is at hand. 00:12:27.860 --> 00:12:29.700 Repent and believe in the gospel. 00:12:30.500 --> 00:12:32.540 And we see the same thing in Luke. 00:12:33.000 --> 00:12:34.160 So what was this gospel? 00:12:34.159 --> 00:12:39.379 What was this good news that Jesus speaks about, that he came to declare? 00:12:40.059 --> 00:12:50.839 It is that the kingdom of God was at hand, being enacted and being brought into administration by his coming into the world. 00:12:51.100 --> 00:12:52.459 And that is the good news. 00:12:52.799 --> 00:12:54.459 It's that the kingdom is at hand. 00:12:54.539 --> 00:12:58.339 It has come in the Messiah, Jesus Christ. 00:12:58.340 --> 00:13:05.540 And the kingdom of God is what Jesus spoke about, I think, more than anything else, really. 00:13:06.000 --> 00:13:11.460 Just in the Gospel of Matthew alone, Jesus mentions the kingdom 50 times. 00:13:11.759 --> 00:13:12.320 50 times. 00:13:12.379 --> 00:13:13.879 That's in a sort of normal-sized Bible. 00:13:14.160 --> 00:13:16.540 That's around about one and a half times per page. 00:13:17.100 --> 00:13:21.899 And so if we want to understand who Jesus is and what the gospel is really all about, 00:13:21.899 --> 00:13:26.220 we need to perhaps pay very close attention to what the term means. 00:13:27.319 --> 00:13:31.299 Now, over the years, considering what is Christianity all about, 00:13:31.659 --> 00:13:35.799 I think different traditions and different people have emphasized a couple of different things. 00:13:36.059 --> 00:13:39.779 All true, but maybe not the full picture. 00:13:40.059 --> 00:13:44.000 Here are some examples that sort of touch on it, but not the whole picture. 00:13:44.639 --> 00:13:50.679 Each of these shows a small part of the reality of what Christianity is about, what the kingdom is about. 00:13:50.679 --> 00:13:54.679 The first is that people would say, well, it's all about Jesus' ethical teachings. 00:13:55.459 --> 00:13:59.479 You know, his morals that he comes to teach us, the good way to live, the right way to live. 00:13:59.599 --> 00:14:03.599 And that's true, but it's not really what the kingdom is all about. 00:14:04.659 --> 00:14:07.679 The second is that Jesus is what would be called our moral exemplar. 00:14:08.579 --> 00:14:10.439 He is the example for us to follow. 00:14:10.539 --> 00:14:15.199 We look at his life, we see what he did, and we try and follow that out by the way we live. 00:14:15.459 --> 00:14:19.819 That is absolutely true, but again, it's not the full picture. 00:14:20.679 --> 00:14:26.719 Some would say that, you know, you read the gospels, you read the parables, the stories about Jesus' life. 00:14:27.500 --> 00:14:30.859 And, you know, these are stories that we can identify with and step into. 00:14:31.519 --> 00:14:32.979 And that's what it's all about. 00:14:33.399 --> 00:14:38.259 Well, again, I think that's sort of, you know, usefulness to us as we reflect and meditate on scripture. 00:14:38.399 --> 00:14:40.500 But it's, again, not the full story. 00:14:40.500 --> 00:14:48.220 And many would say, well, Christianity, the message of the gospel of the kingdom is all about going to heaven. 00:14:48.580 --> 00:14:49.539 That's what it's all about. 00:14:50.039 --> 00:14:52.639 Now, again, that's not the full picture. 00:14:53.019 --> 00:14:57.159 But let me focus on this one for a moment because I think this is very, very prevalent. 00:14:57.820 --> 00:15:01.980 The idea is this, is that Jesus came to teach people how to go to heaven. 00:15:01.980 --> 00:15:08.240 Basically, this is sadly in our time been taken to almost be a get out of jail free card. 00:15:08.420 --> 00:15:12.060 You know, if you profess faith in Jesus and that just means you've got your ticket to heaven. 00:15:12.279 --> 00:15:13.399 And that's the extent of it. 00:15:14.120 --> 00:15:16.560 That is not at all what we see in scripture. 00:15:16.559 --> 00:15:23.119 Now, absolutely, there is a very strong affirmation in the whole of the New Testament. 00:15:23.559 --> 00:15:32.299 And I think through the whole of scripture that God has a wonderful, wonderful future prepared for his people after their bodily death. 00:15:33.039 --> 00:15:38.299 Climaxing in the new world of resurrection and new heaven and new earth, whatever that might look like. 00:15:38.299 --> 00:15:45.839 But this is not what Jesus' teaching is primarily about as we think about this concept of the kingdom of heaven. 00:15:45.840 --> 00:15:51.420 The point of our faith is not just so that you get to go to heaven one day. 00:15:51.620 --> 00:15:53.399 I think that is insufficient. 00:15:54.360 --> 00:16:00.240 The phrase the kingdom of heaven is actually about the rule of heaven coming to earth. 00:16:00.600 --> 00:16:02.040 The rule of heaven coming to earth. 00:16:02.040 --> 00:16:14.639 When Matthew has Jesus talking about heaven's kingdom, he means that heaven, in other words, the God of heaven, is establishing his sovereign rule, not just in heaven, but on earth as well. 00:16:14.639 --> 00:16:18.720 And that, in Jesus' coming, is what he came to begin. 00:16:19.519 --> 00:16:32.779 And so in a very poor nutshell, if you will, it's all about Jesus taking up his place as Messiah, the true king, ushering in the true kingdom. 00:16:32.779 --> 00:16:41.419 And it is a kingdom in which we, as followers of Jesus, play a very important part. 00:16:42.139 --> 00:16:50.039 I promise, this does build to the point of the sermon, this question of why we should be sharing our faith. 00:16:50.120 --> 00:16:54.220 But to me, I think that is very important to understand the context of these verses. 00:16:54.439 --> 00:16:57.000 It's all in the context of the kingdom of heaven. 00:16:57.000 --> 00:17:01.700 Before I began, we also read Psalm 8. 00:17:02.220 --> 00:17:03.259 Why did we do that? 00:17:03.980 --> 00:17:09.299 Psalm 8 is a reflection, I think, on Genesis 1. 00:17:09.819 --> 00:17:19.000 It's a reflection on the order of creation and our place as stewards over creation, being made in the image of God. 00:17:19.000 --> 00:17:27.019 That is the reality of the way God initially set things up as we read those pages of Scripture in Genesis 1 and read about the Garden of Eden. 00:17:27.359 --> 00:17:28.819 It's that he is the creator. 00:17:28.980 --> 00:17:40.500 He is the ultimate sovereign, but he has put his royal image onto humanity to be stewards of that creation, looking after it, to functionally rule over it in some way. 00:17:40.500 --> 00:17:43.940 And so this initial created order was good. 00:17:44.339 --> 00:17:52.059 It was a reality where God's space, God's kingdom was overlapping with or in harmony with the earth. 00:17:52.880 --> 00:17:54.380 And it was this glorious harmony. 00:17:54.700 --> 00:18:07.500 And it's a description of this wonderful unity where God has set up this world and humanity was in right relationship with its creator, working to be his stewards, his emissaries. just a few pages on, that something went wrong. 00:18:35.440 --> 00:18:37.160 That humanity went astray. 00:18:37.720 --> 00:18:41.660 And in doing so, the right ordering of things was broken. sovereign wisdom, had already a plan in mind to restore all things and bring about restoration and redemption and set all things right. 00:19:19.259 --> 00:19:20.519 Okay, so I know I've said a lot there. 00:19:20.740 --> 00:19:26.659 But in summary so far, number one is that there is a reality in which God reigns. 00:19:26.660 --> 00:19:29.220 And everything that is done is God's will. 00:19:29.500 --> 00:19:30.200 And it is good. 00:19:30.880 --> 00:19:39.019 Number two is that the story of the Bible is that the earth has become a place where God's will isn't being perfectly
