A reminder that we're in a series on the book of Ruth, 00:00:11.120 --> 00:00:18.300 and we are going to be starting here again in Ruth chapter 1, finishing the chapter at verses 19 through 22. 00:00:19.679 --> 00:00:29.820 I was reminded this week as I spoke with several of you, you shared with me how challenging it is at times to listen to the story of Ruth. 00:00:30.480 --> 00:00:37.780 Because as we've talked about, it's a book about suffering, and so for many of us, it brings up memories that are hard and sometimes difficult, 00:00:38.640 --> 00:00:41.659 perhaps memories that we would rather not think about if we didn't have to. 00:00:42.519 --> 00:00:49.159 And it also got me thinking that some of us grew up in families where hard things were never talked about. 00:00:50.900 --> 00:00:57.700 And I was reminded that here, as God's family, we have to talk about hard things. 00:00:57.700 --> 00:01:04.299 We have to talk about suffering and the things that happen to us in this world because that is the reality of life. 00:01:05.340 --> 00:01:08.260 It's the reality of life in a world that has been broken by sin. 00:01:09.240 --> 00:01:15.680 That we live in a place that is bleeding and broken because of the results of our rebellion against God. 00:01:16.900 --> 00:01:22.020 And so we want to talk about hard things, not because we enjoy them, but because we know, remember, 00:01:22.019 --> 00:01:26.219 we've talked about that God, as a loving Father, longs for us to be wise. 00:01:26.939 --> 00:01:33.319 He longs for us to be wise and prepared for the things that will face us as we walk as his children in this world. 00:01:33.319 --> 00:01:39.679 And so if you're suffering right now, remember that this book is for you. 00:01:40.739 --> 00:01:43.559 It's a reminder of how God thinks about suffering. 00:01:44.280 --> 00:01:48.219 And it's a reminder of his steadfast love to us in the midst of it. 00:01:49.679 --> 00:01:56.399 And if you're not suffering, remember the dress, 00:04:44.979 --> 00:04:49.799 it was an image that showed up on the internet of this one dress from Europe 00:04:49.799 --> 00:04:53.659 that was unlike any other picture of any other dress. 00:04:53.660 --> 00:04:57.000 Because depending on who you were, 00:04:57.120 --> 00:04:58.800 you saw one of two different things. 00:05:00.500 --> 00:05:02.120 When some people looked at the dress, 00:05:02.200 --> 00:05:05.160 they saw a dress that was blue and black. 00:05:05.160 --> 00:05:10.020 And when other people looked at the very same picture, 00:05:10.140 --> 00:05:12.880 issue happening with Naomi. 00:07:08.180 --> 00:07:10.980 Naomi has a set of very challenging circumstances 00:07:10.980 --> 00:07:12.120 in front of her. 00:07:13.160 --> 00:07:17.200 And she's not completely sure what's going on. 00:07:19.040 --> 00:07:21.360 In fact, we might even say she's decided 00:07:21.360 --> 00:07:23.879 based on incomplete information what is going on. 00:07:25.439 --> 00:07:26.720 She doesn't know the whole story. 00:07:26.800 --> 00:07:28.300 She doesn't know exactly what's happening, 00:07:28.420 --> 00:07:29.040 why it's happening, 00:07:29.140 --> 00:07:31.620 but she has decided to come to a conclusion. 00:07:32.759 --> 00:07:34.620 We see in the past, 00:07:34.720 --> 00:07:36.500 we know that she had left her homeland. 00:07:36.500 --> 00:07:39.379 She left the land of Israel to go to the land of Moab 00:07:39.379 --> 00:07:40.500 because there had been a famine. 00:07:41.519 --> 00:07:42.120 And while there, 00:07:42.220 --> 00:07:44.160 she had lost not only her husband, 00:07:44.620 --> 00:07:45.800 but her two sons. 00:07:47.139 --> 00:07:49.220 And so we saw in our first week, 00:07:49.319 --> 00:07:50.920 in verses 1 through 6, 00:07:51.060 --> 00:07:54.720 that even when tragedy strikes, 00:07:54.720 --> 00:07:58.060 God is still in charge. 00:07:59.820 --> 00:08:02.380 And then we saw last week in verses 6 through 18 00:08:02.380 --> 00:08:04.520 that when tragedy strikes, 00:08:05.420 --> 00:08:07.820 it's the responsibility of God's people 00:08:07.820 --> 00:08:09.640 to come alongside each other. 00:08:12.740 --> 00:08:14.700 But here the question is a little bit different. 00:08:16.560 --> 00:08:19.220 It's not the question of whether God's in charge. 00:08:19.220 --> 00:08:24.440 And it's not the question of whether or how 00:08:24.440 --> 00:08:26.160 we should come along those who are suffering. 00:08:26.880 --> 00:08:31.120 But instead it's the question of whether God is good. 00:08:32.399 --> 00:08:33.440 Whether he's loving. 00:08:34.279 --> 00:08:36.740 Whether he's still with us in the midst of suffering 00:08:36.740 --> 00:08:37.820 or he's abandoned us. 00:08:38.320 --> 00:08:40.440 And so it's not a question about his control, 00:08:40.519 --> 00:08:41.639 about what he can do. 00:08:42.639 --> 00:08:45.399 In fact, Naomi's going to refer to him here in verse 21 00:08:45.399 --> 00:08:46.100 as the Almighty. 00:08:47.060 --> 00:08:48.960 She knows that God has all the power. 00:08:49.220 --> 00:08:51.360 The question is, 00:08:51.500 --> 00:08:52.840 why has he not used it 00:08:52.840 --> 00:08:55.320 in a different way? 00:08:57.000 --> 00:08:59.700 She comes back to the town of Bethlehem in verse 19. 00:08:59.820 --> 00:09:03.220 Remember we saw in our very first week in Ruth 00:09:03.220 --> 00:09:06.820 that Naomi had heard that the famine 00:09:06.820 --> 00:09:08.879 that had caused her to leave her homeland was over. 00:09:09.759 --> 00:09:12.139 And she was heading back with her daughters-in-law 00:09:12.139 --> 00:09:14.240 in hopes that there would actually be a place 00:09:14.240 --> 00:09:15.700 for food there in her homeland. 00:09:16.720 --> 00:09:17.700 And as she comes back, 00:09:17.700 --> 00:09:20.879 remember we know that she's been gone for over 10 years. 00:09:21.320 --> 00:09:24.140 Because we found out understand the surprise and the shock 00:09:33.360 --> 00:09:35.960 of other women in the town in verse 18 and 19. 00:09:36.220 --> 00:09:37.500 As she comes back, they say, 00:09:37.500 -->
