So, you know, as we all know, 00:01:10.219 --> 00:01:16.879 the behavior of Christians can make the gospel look ugly. And the behavior of Christians can make 00:01:16.879 --> 00:01:23.979 Christianity look unbelievably unattractive. And the text that we are going to be looking at today 00:01:23.980 --> 00:01:34.000 is on one hand a very powerful text about... that touches a common human problem. And the common human 00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:43.520 problem is that no human being lives without tragedy and brokenness in their lives. And it's a common 00:01:43.520 --> 00:01:51.000 human desire that in the midst of tragedy, in the midst of evil, in the midst of terrible things that 00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:57.579 happen, that there could be some type of amending of that which has been broken. And this Bible text, 00:01:57.680 --> 00:02:03.500 on one hand, is a very, very powerful text that speaks into this. Yet at the same time, this very 00:02:03.500 --> 00:02:10.520 powerful and wonderful text that speaks into the problem of how we human beings address tragedy and 00:02:10.520 --> 00:02:17.199 brokenness and how the gospel speaks to it, is also a text that has been one of the main texts used to 00:02:17.199 --> 00:02:24.739 justify violence against Jewish people and the murder of Jewish people for centuries upon centuries. 00:02:25.879 --> 00:02:35.459 It is a text which has been used to justify horrendous evil and has also been used to justify horrendous 00:02:35.459 --> 00:02:43.679 abuse of power by politicians, by kings, and by those in positions of authority. It's very, 00:02:43.680 --> 00:02:51.520 very interesting that the same text which has been used to perpetrate horrors is also actually a text 00:02:51.520 --> 00:02:57.960 which describes a profound horror which is absolutely essential for the mending of the world and the 00:02:57.960 --> 00:03:05.000 mending of creation and the mending of relationships. And so let's look at it together. John chapter 19, 00:03:05.420 --> 00:03:12.140 beginning at the first verse. John chapter 19, beginning at the first verse. And just before we start to read it, 00:03:12.139 --> 00:03:20.079 as you turn to it in your Bible, what we're reading is we're reading one of the four ancient biographies, 00:03:20.679 --> 00:03:26.119 eyewitness biographies of Jesus. There's only four ancient eyewitness biographies of Jesus. This is one 00:03:26.119 --> 00:03:35.179 of them. And the way that John, the author of this biography, has chosen to write it, he spent some time 00:03:35.179 --> 00:03:40.139 sort of introducing who Jesus was, described his miracles, and then out of all the writers, he spends the 00:03:40.139 --> 00:03:47.819 longest amount of time on what Jesus said to his disciples privately in an upper room after Judas 00:03:47.819 --> 00:03:55.139 had left the disciples and left Jesus to get the soldiers and capture Jesus. And that's already 00:03:55.139 --> 00:04:01.979 happened. John then describes in sort of a summary a very key meeting between the spiritual leaders of 00:04:01.979 --> 00:04:10.519 the land and Jesus. And then last week, we looked at the beginning of how Rome, the imperial power, the emperor, 00:04:10.679 --> 00:04:19.180 that great pagan empire, how that empire begins to deal with Jesus. And actually, it's not going to be up on the 00:04:19.180 --> 00:04:29.740 screen. You'll just have to have it in your Bibles. If you just look at 18, chapter 18, verse 38, there's a phrase 00:04:29.740 --> 00:04:35.420 there which is very, very, very important to set to help us to understand what's going to be happening 00:04:35.420 --> 00:04:41.660 in this chapter, which is the ongoing attempt by Pilate to deal with Jesus and with the spiritual 00:04:41.660 --> 00:04:48.639 leaders. And Jesus has said that he's come to bear witness to the truth. And Pilate famously in chapter 18, 00:04:48.740 --> 00:04:56.680 verse 38 said, Pilate said to him, what is truth? What is truth? And it's very, very interesting. 00:04:56.680 --> 00:05:04.939 This is the power of story, is that when we are gripped by the story, it helps us at a sort of a 00:05:04.939 --> 00:05:12.019 very emotional and imaginative level to enter into truths that we might have a hard time articulating 00:05:12.019 --> 00:05:19.960 in words. But Pilate says to Jesus, what is truth? Sounds just like a university professor, sounds like 00:05:19.960 --> 00:05:25.780 most people you would meet in a Starbucks or a Tim Hortons for that matter, most newspaper writers, 00:05:25.779 --> 00:05:30.899 what is truth? And then Pilate doesn't wait for an answer. If you look what happens next, and after 00:05:30.899 --> 00:05:36.039 he had said this, he went back outside to the spiritual leaders and told them, I find no guilt in 00:05:36.039 --> 00:05:45.799 him. So Pilate knows that Jesus is completely and utterly innocent of any Roman law. He hasn't violated 00:05:45.799 --> 00:05:54.839 any Roman law. But then, and here's the terrible, heartless cynicism of Pilate, verse 39, 00:05:54.839 --> 00:05:58.819 but you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to 00:05:58.819 --> 00:06:04.479 release to you the king of the Jews? And they cried out again and again, not this man, but Barabbas. 00:06:04.859 --> 00:06:09.339 Now, Barabbas was a robber. And we know in other places that he was an insurrectionist and a murderer. 00:06:10.199 --> 00:06:15.639 And we didn't look at this very much last week, but what happens here, it's a very, very powerful 00:06:15.639 --> 00:06:21.319 thing to understand is that if truth does not exist, then justice does not exist. 00:06:23.240 --> 00:06:28.639 Right? Because that's what happens here. I used the example last week to try to bring it home. It's as 00:06:28.639 --> 00:06:35.159 if the soldiers came in and said, let's just grab Anne, you know, innocent. 00:06:35.160 --> 00:06:46.360 I'm sure she has a tongue on her, but basically harmless. And what the heck? We'll just compare 00:06:46.360 --> 00:06:52.260 Anne to a murder and see who the crowd wants me to kill. Like, that's what Pilate just does. 00:06:52.879 --> 00:06:57.080 That's what he's doing right here. A person that he knows is completely innocent, but he then says, 00:06:57.140 --> 00:07:01.260 oh, I'll just throw it out, see a bit of a lottery as to who the crowd's going to pick. It's 00:07:01.259 --> 00:07:06.680 unbelievably cynical. And so what the story is helping us to imaginatively understand 00:07:06.680 --> 00:07:15.180 is that if truth does not exist, then justice does not exist. And all that is left is a desire for power, 00:07:15.719 --> 00:07:21.120 whether it's by the individual, the party, the tribe, or the nation. Long before Nietzsche, 00:07:22.180 --> 00:07:29.759 the Bible nails it. Long before Nietzsche, long before postmodernism, and both of those get all 00:07:29.759 --> 00:07:35.959 sorts of other things wrong in a very profound way, the Bible nails it. As we lose the belief 00:07:35.959 --> 00:07:43.000 that truth exists, we will lose the belief that justice exists. And when truth is gone and justice 00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:51.000 is gone, all that is left is the clenched fist. Whether it's my clenched fist, the party's clenched 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:56.379 fist, the tribe's clenched fist, or the nation's clenched fist, that's all that's left. 00:07:56.379 --> 00:08:04.579 It's all that's left. And what also happens is that when we lose the belief in truth and lose 00:08:04.579 --> 00:08:12.120 the belief in justice, we start to live a very, very unbalanced and incomprehensible life. 00:08:13.180 --> 00:08:17.659 We start to not be able to understand ourselves, our own actions. And that's what's going to explain 00:08:17.660 --> 00:08:24.020 what's going to happen right now with Pilate. Pilate knows that Jesus is innocent. He's given 00:08:24.020 --> 00:08:30.620 up on truth. He's created this opportunity where the crowd can pick Barabbas, or they can pick 00:08:30.620 --> 00:08:37.279 Jesus. What's going to happen? Verse 1 of chapter 19, then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. 00:08:37.279 --> 00:08:50.000 He flogged him. He whipped him. He whipped him. He whipped him. They would have taken the clothes 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:53.860 off his back and whipped him and whipped him and whipped him. And Jesus would have stood there 00:08:53.860 --> 00:09:00.299 bloodied and battered inside the praetorium. And verse 2, and the soldiers twisted together, 00:09:00.299 --> 00:09:07.259 that's the Roman soldiers, twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and arrayed 00:09:07.259 --> 00:09:11.639 him in a purple robe, a purple robe. It would have just been some old piece of rag that they had 00:09:11.639 --> 00:09:19.099 kicking around the guardhouse. And purple is the color of royalty. And the crown of thorns would 00:09:19.099 --> 00:09:25.719 look like the type of crown that a Roman emperor would wear. And they came up to him saying, 00:09:25.720 --> 00:09:33.019 Hail, King of the Jews! Which is actually mocking, because the normal cry of the Roman soldier would 00:09:33.019 --> 00:09:41.000 be, Hail, Caesar! And hail means live long and prosper, basically. Is that the Vulcan war cry? 00:09:41.139 --> 00:09:45.960 Whatever. It's one of those Star Trek things. Live long and prosper. King of the Jews that we've just 00:09:45.960 --> 00:09:53.300 whipped and put a filthy robe on and a crown of thorns on your head. Head wounds bleed. 00:09:53.299 --> 00:09:59.559 And not only that, they continue on, and they struck him with their hands. In the original language, 00:09:59.679 --> 00:10:08.099 they struck him again and again and again. Pilate went out again and said to them, oh, sorry, 00:10:08.159 --> 00:10:15.359 just pause here. Oh, yeah, keep going. So Pilate has done this. So he has an innocent man. He has him 00:10:15.359 --> 00:10:19.099 whipped. He doesn't necessarily know that the soldiers are going to mock him, but it wouldn't surprise him 00:10:19.100 --> 00:10:25.040 either. He would know his troops. And he would know how they deal with the conquered people, 00:10:25.040 --> 00:10:31.240 and they would deal with somebody that, from the eyes of the troops, if the spiritual leaders have 00:10:31.240 --> 00:10:38.440 picked Jesus over a guy who's a terrorist and a robber, then obviously Jesus is a bad guy, 00:10:38.480 --> 00:10:45.000 and they treat him appropriately. In verse 4, Pilate went out again and said to them, and that is the 00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:50.960 spiritual leaders, see, I am bringing out to you, bringing him, that's Jesus, out to you, that you 00:10:50.960 --> 00:10:57.799 may know that I find no guilt in him. What probably is happening here is that Pilate is probably hoping 00:10:57.799 --> 00:11:09.639 that the severe flogging of Jesus and this complete and utter humiliation would quench their lust for death. 00:11:09.639 --> 00:11:19.139 Verse 5, so Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, and Pilate said to them, 00:11:19.519 --> 00:11:26.919 behold the man, the man. And when the chief, the chief priests and the officers saw him, that is the 00:11:26.919 --> 00:11:34.740 spiritual leaders, they cried out, crucify him, crucify him. Pilate said to them, take him yourselves 00:11:34.740 --> 00:11:41.320 and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him. And just sort of pause there for a second. If you go 00:11:41.320 --> 00:11:48.320 back and you'll see that within a very few number of verses, because chapter 18 only has 40 verses, 00:11:49.060 --> 00:11:55.220 and it's in verse 38 that Pilate declares that Jesus is innocent. In verse 4, he declares that Jesus 00:11:55.220 --> 00:12:00.639 is innocent. And in verse 6, three times, Pilate declares that Jesus is innocent. Three times. 00:12:00.639 --> 00:12:07.939 Pilate declares that Jesus is innocent. And yet the response of the spiritual leaders is to demand 00:12:07.939 --> 00:12:17.159 the crucifixion of Jesus. The Romans, during that first part of the first century, crucified literally, 00:12:17.299 --> 00:12:22.480 according to non-Christian historians, according to Jewish historians, crucified literally thousands 00:12:22.480 --> 00:12:30.120 upon thousands of Jewish people. Crucifying another Jew is no big thing for Pilate. 00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:37.980 Because he's crucified lots. And he will crucify lots after this. And he has the power to let 00:12:37.980 --> 00:12:46.600 Jesus go. The spiritual leaders demand that Jesus will be crucified. Literally, when Pilate says, 00:12:46.860 --> 00:12:53.759 behold, the man, it's actually sort of a famous phrase. And he probably just means, look at this 00:12:53.759 --> 00:12:58.759 pitiable guy that I've just beaten up. Like, he's no threat to me, he's no threat to you. I've just beat 00:12:58.759 --> 00:13:08.919 him up terribly. I've just flogged him. Like, he's like a gnat that I can just flick off. Like, what threat 00:13:08.919 --> 00:13:17.720 is he? But in John's language, Jesus is more than just a miserable man. He is the man. As we will see 00:13:17.720 --> 00:13:27.500 in a moment, he is the one who can die for all human beings and represent all human beings. Pilate speaks in a 00:13:27.500 --> 00:13:33.879 sense in a prophetic way that he's not aware of when he makes that statement. And the other thing which is 00:13:33.879 --> 00:13:43.840 so interesting about this is that Pilate and the spiritual leaders are working hand in hand, one's weakness 00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:50.879 and the other's desire for his death. They're working hand in hand inadvertently to fulfill a prophecy of 00:13:50.879 --> 00:14:00.000 Jesus. It's a great irony. These human beings with all their power, if Pilate had said, listen, I'm just 00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:04.320 going to give you permission this one time not to crucify him, but just to deal with him your own way. 00:14:04.379 --> 00:14:09.340 I'll turn a blind eye. You go and deal with him yourself according to your law, and I'll make sure the 00:14:09.340 --> 00:14:14.860 troops are all somewhere else. Then Jesus would have died by stoning, because that's the way that the 00:14:14.860 --> 00:14:20.440 Jewish people carried out capital punishment. But Jesus had prophesied that he would die by 00:14:20.440 --> 00:14:25.840 crucifixion. And it's very, very interesting. It's the enemies. If Jesus doesn't do anything to 00:14:25.840 --> 00:14:35.379 fulfill his own prophecy, it is his enemies that act unwittingly to fulfill the prophecy that Jesus has made. 00:14:35.379 --> 00:14:35.440 Amen. 00:14:39.340 --> 00:14:45.899 And then there's this very, very puzzling thing. The Jewish people, the spiritual leaders actually 00:14:45.899 --> 00:14:53.460 here make a tactical error that almost means that Jesus is going to be let go. And look at what 00:14:53.460 --> 00:15:01.560 happens in verse 7. The spiritual leaders answered Pilate, we have a law. And according to that law, 00:15:01.559 --> 00:15:11.119 Jesus ought to die because he has made himself son of God. When Pilate heard this statement, he was even 00:15:11.119 --> 00:15:20.159 more afraid. He entered his praetorium again and said to Jesus, where are you from? But Jesus gave him 00:15:20.159 --> 00:15:28.239 no answer. This is a very interesting clash of worldviews. Remember, what you have to remember when you're 00:15:28.240 --> 00:15:35.539 reading this is that all the smart people in the world agreed with Pilate. The Jewish people in that 00:15:35.539 --> 00:15:39.879 ancient world, they weren't smart people. They were the dumb people. They didn't believe that there were 00:15:39.879 --> 00:15:48.200 lots of gods, which every smart person, the old, the first century equivalent of the Globe and Mail, 00:15:48.200 --> 00:15:56.240 the National Post, the CBC, the University of Ottawa, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge. 00:15:56.420 --> 00:16:02.020 They would have all agreed with Pilate because that's what all the smart people just knew was true. 00:16:02.560 --> 00:16:10.540 To disagree with it, they'd go like, duh. So Pilate's operating from his point of view. And from his point of view, 00:16:10.680 --> 00:16:16.580 the spiritual leaders have just said, this guy claims to be son of God. And from Pilate's point of view, 00:16:16.580 --> 00:16:23.700 he understands his mythology. And in his mythology, the gods sometimes have sex 00:16:23.700 --> 00:16:35.259 with human women. And a demigod, the son of a god, walks the earth. Or a god, or goddess himself or 00:16:35.259 --> 00:16:42.740 herself would walk the earth. And the spiritual leaders have just said that this guy claims to be God. 00:16:42.740 --> 00:16:48.759 God. And Pilate's already trying to puzzle over why they're so incensed upon killing him. And Pilate 00:16:48.759 --> 00:16:54.519 now, all of a sudden, is a good pagan, knowing what all the smart people know. By the way, you know, 00:16:54.539 --> 00:17:00.419 I'm saying that on purpose because we can be, I can be so overawed by what all the smart people know. 00:17:00.980 --> 00:17:07.240 And it's so easy to forget that in 20 years, people will mock what all the smart people know today. 00:17:07.240 --> 00:17:15.160 Not even 20 years. All the smart people will think something different. 00:17:17.480 --> 00:17:22.099 So that's one of the reasons why, as an aside, the Bible is not a conservative book. The Bible is 00:17:22.099 --> 00:17:28.359 perpetually radical and revolutionary. It keeps pointing us to a truth that comes outside of the 00:17:28.359 --> 00:17:38.299 flow of history that's always true. Anyway, so Pilate now is terrified. Have I beaten the son 00:17:38.299 --> 00:17:41.139 of a god? 00:17:45.500 --> 00:17:53.259 Now, it's in this question and answer period that we come to the very part of the story that has justified 00:17:53.259 --> 00:18:00.440 anti-Semitism and the murder of, to be honest, by those claiming to be Christian literally throughout 00:18:00.440 --> 00:18:03.740 history, thousands upon thousands upon thousands of Jewish people. 00:18:06.559 --> 00:18:08.720 Look what happens here in verse 10. 00:18:10.019 --> 00:18:11.660 So we'll go back to verse 9 again. 00:18:12.839 --> 00:18:17.180 Pilate entered his praetorium again and said to Jesus, 00:18:17.359 --> 00:18:18.160 where are you from? 00:18:18.160 --> 00:18:24.320 That's a smart question to ask if you think, like, are you, he's trying to figure out where, 00:18:25.220 --> 00:18:28.360 like, which god, like, how, like, where are you from? 00:18:29.240 --> 00:18:30.600 It's a pagan question. 00:18:31.460 --> 00:18:33.960 But Jesus gave him no answer. Jesus is silent. 00:18:34.140 --> 00:18:39.759 So verse 10, so Pilate said to him, just remember here, Pilate has crucified many people. 00:18:40.279 --> 00:18:43.140 He has had many people beaten, many people whipped. 00:18:43.140 --> 00:18:50.900 Pilate, he would be very, very used to a person crying and soiling themselves and making all 00:18:50.900 --> 00:18:56.380 sorts of promises if Pilate would just relent and let him go. 00:18:56.680 --> 00:18:59.980 He has had many beaten men and women before him. 00:19:00.500 --> 00:19:01.540 And Jesus is silent. 00:19:02.000 --> 00:19:03.840 So Pilate, in verse 10, is exasperated. 00:19:03.920 --> 00:19:05.759 He says, you will not speak to me? 00:19:06.420 --> 00:19:10.400 Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you? 00:19:13.140 --> 00:19:20.700 Jesus answered him, you would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given to you from above. 00:19:21.600 --> 00:19:24.560 Therefore, he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin. 00:19:25.840 --> 00:19:31.560 And just to be clear, you would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given to you from above. 00:19:32.080 --> 00:19:36.040 When in John chapter 3, if you go back and you look, you must be born again. 00:19:36.480 --> 00:19:39.020 You have to be born from above. 00:19:39.019 --> 00:19:45.019 Jesus is referring to the fact that the authority that Pilate has has come from God. 00:19:48.019 --> 00:20:00.240 Hence, this becomes an important text for those who believe that the Bible and that Jesus and Christianity justifies the power of tyrants. 00:20:00.240 --> 00:20:04.620 And then the next bit. 00:20:06.120 --> 00:20:10.500 Therefore, he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin. 00:20:10.740 --> 00:20:13.839 And at a linguistic level, he's referring to the Jewish people. 00:20:16.079 --> 00:20:18.700 He's referring to the spiritual leaders of the Jewish people. 00:20:19.700 --> 00:20:22.539 Jesus has just said the ones guilty of the greatest sin. 00:20:22.539 --> 00:20:23.539 The first thing that he who did is to be born again. 00:20:23.539 --> 00:20:24.539 The first thing that he who did is to be born again. 00:20:24.539 --> 00:20:25.539 The first thing that he who did is to be born again. 00:20:25.539 --> 00:20:26.539 The first thing that he who did is to be born again. 00:20:26.539 --> 00:20:28.659 And you can see how this is fueled. 00:20:30.259 --> 00:20:34.500 Murderous hatred of the Jewish people at different times throughout Christian history. 00:20:36.980 --> 00:20:44.339 So we just have to pause to think about this text a little bit before we get to the real heart of it in terms of our hearts. 00:20:44.500 --> 00:20:49.220 But once we're aware of this, we can't just ignore it. 00:20:49.220 --> 00:20:54.720 The first thing about this text actually is that it has a very deep irony about it. 00:20:57.360 --> 00:20:59.779 Pilate is claiming that he has all this power. 00:21:00.279 --> 00:21:04.220 Yet the fact of the matter is in this story, he doesn't have power, does he? 00:21:05.299 --> 00:21:09.860 Jesus, just by saying nothing, has completely and utterly flummoxed all of Pilate's power. 00:21:11.240 --> 00:21:14.220 And Pilate's being pushed around by the crowd. 00:21:15.180 --> 00:21:16.620 Being pushed around by the crowd. 00:21:16.619 --> 00:21:20.859 Pilate can go like this and the Roman soldiers could scatter those people. 00:21:21.000 --> 00:21:24.079 And Pilate can do whatever he darn well feels like and yet he doesn't. 00:21:24.159 --> 00:21:25.859 In fact, everything about this story. 00:21:26.359 --> 00:21:30.819 Remember I said that when you lose the sense of truth, you lose the sense of justice. 00:21:31.439 --> 00:21:32.799 And all that's left is this. 00:21:32.919 --> 00:21:34.619 But this is profoundly unstable. 00:21:35.619 --> 00:21:40.879 And what ends up happening is that you have no principle, no way of knowing true north. 00:21:40.880 --> 00:21:47.720 No way of knowing where to go and your life becomes chaotic and driven hither and yon. 00:21:50.120 --> 00:21:53.220 And that's actually exactly what you see happening to Pilate. 00:21:54.120 --> 00:21:55.860 Let's deal with the power first. 00:21:56.820 --> 00:22:03.480 One of the things which people misunderstand about the text is that what Jesus is not saying, 00:22:03.480 --> 00:22:10.079 what Jesus is saying is this, God never relinquishes sovereignty over human beings. 00:22:12.019 --> celebration 00:31:27.420 --> 00:31:29.140 of God's deliverance 00:31:29.140 --> 00:31:31.759 of the people 00:31:31.759 --> 00:31:33.720 from bondage and slavery. 00:31:34.080 --> 00:31:35.100 And
