00:03:46.780 And his father, thinking he was in his own place or in a place with other guys, 00:03:46.780 --> 00:03:53.620 had been putting a monthly stipend into his account that would take care of his rent and for his food for the month. 00:03:53.620 --> 00:03:55.920 In addition to his father paying for his college education. 00:03:57.360 --> 00:04:03.039 So it was kind of odd that this guy would choose to crash on our couch and other people's couches. 00:04:04.960 --> 00:04:09.700 As we talked more about it, I can be kind of confrontational, not in a negative way, 00:04:09.759 --> 00:04:11.259 but in a, hey, tell me what's going on kind of way. 00:04:12.460 --> 00:04:16.060 He disclosed that his dad had never really been around growing up. 00:04:16.060 --> 00:04:19.519 And he wasn't really sure how much he could trust him now. 00:04:20.439 --> 00:04:23.160 And so he was taking all that money and just kind of bankrolling it. 00:04:23.860 --> 00:04:28.740 And keeping it in case the bottom fell out from his father helping him. 00:04:31.060 --> 00:04:34.100 He said, also, I know where the money needs to go more than my dad does. 00:04:34.899 --> 00:04:36.980 Because I'm wisdom books, just trying to reorient myself to what we think about 00:05:08.839 --> 00:05:13.579 when you're reading wisdom literature, like what we just read there in the first eight verses. 00:05:15.240 --> 00:05:20.279 And I couldn't examine Chris's relationship without examining my relationship with God. 00:05:21.219 --> 00:05:24.719 I saw so many similarities to what was going on there. 00:05:24.720 --> 00:05:29.820 Rather than viewing him in awe with reverence and honor and love. 00:05:30.420 --> 00:05:32.440 And most importantly, necessity and need. 00:05:33.540 --> 00:05:38.660 I found myself in a relationship with God, viewing him more as a means to an end. 00:05:41.260 --> 00:05:48.160 Rather than having that love and relationship that I would have with a that's pretty much what the text of scripture is about. 00:06:02.040 --> 00:06:05.320 Much of what we've been examining in Luke over the past few months has been 00:06:07.440 --> 00:06:09.580 pushing us to consider eternal things. 00:06:09.760 --> 00:06:13.660 The gravity of life and death and what happens after life. 00:06:14.600 --> 00:06:17.120 More than the things that are around us now. 00:06:17.200 --> 00:06:18.460 More than the temporary things. 00:06:19.380 --> 00:06:23.880 And as we look in this chapter, the father who's writing to his son in Proverbs 00:06:23.879 --> 00:06:27.259 is saying a lot of the same things to him about eternal thinking. 00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:32.860 About setting your mind on things eternal rather than on things that are temporary. 00:06:33.759 --> 00:06:35.959 And we can look at this and not only is he saying it to his son, 00:06:35.980 --> 00:06:37.860 he's saying it to you and me as well. 00:06:38.680 --> 00:06:41.399 He's not offering, as you can see in these verses, 00:06:41.540 --> 00:06:45.379 he's not offering some live your best life now scheme. 00:06:45.379 --> 00:06:51.079 You know, he's actually offering 00:07:57.019 --> 00:07:59.259 The first thing, you can look on the back of your bulletin and you'll see it there. 00:07:59.299 --> 00:08:02.039 The first thing is that we have a trustworthy father. 00:08:02.759 --> 00:08:05.559 The second, that we have a trust-earning son. 00:08:06.839 --> 00:08:13.599 And the third, that we have a trust-keeping Holy Spirit. 00:08:14.919 --> 00:08:15.599 So let's start. 00:08:15.659 --> 00:08:17.159 We're going to read over the verses one more time. 00:08:17.219 --> 00:08:19.099 We'll start with verses one through four. 00:08:20.039 --> 00:08:21.379 We father is saying to his son. 00:09:16.279 --> 00:09:21.740 Remember everything I've taught you, not just all the laws that you had to learn, because that's what good Jewish people do. 00:09:22.519 --> father honestly, openly, and purposefully sharing the key to life with his son in this moment. 00:10:51.580 --> 00:10:59.360 He's saying, you're going to pay attention to something, so why don't you We've complicated our situation to such an extent that we know that we deserve nothing more than eternal separation from God. 00:13:08.320 --> 00:13:09.960 I felt that last night pretty strongly. promised, am I headed toward peace apart from this? 00:13:44.220 --> 00:13:46.919 How do we examine the way we view life and look at life? 00:13:47.500 --> 00:13:49.220 That's the negative of what that up. 00:15:24.579 --> 00:15:30.120 It's an ideal manner of prayer for those of us who want these Proverbs 3 promises 00:15:30.120 --> 00:15:32.079 to come true and to take them seriously. 00:15:34.319 --> 00:15:38.980 These verses invite us to examine our lives in the light of the promises 00:15:38.980 --> 00:15:39.839 that are issued here. 00:15:39.840 --> 00:15:46.600 But these verses also invite all of us, believers and non-believers in this room, 00:15:47.600 --> 00:15:50.120 these things are true to all of us as they're offered, 00:15:50.759 --> 00:15:53.300 to trust in 00:17:10.740 to live in the love and the beauty of my heavenly Father. 00:17:10.740 --> 00:17:16.400 And the beauty of this passage doesn't end here. 00:17:17.319 --> 00:17:20.720 We're shown how wonderful our trustworthy Father is. 00:17:21.640 --> 00:17:22.519 And in the next few verses, 00:17:22.660 --> 00:17:25.559 we're going to get a glimpse of his trust-earning Son. 00:17:25.700 -->
