the Lord 00:03:02.300 --> 00:03:05.260 and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites. 00:03:05.660 --> 00:03:08.140 Because the power of Midian was so oppressive, 00:03:08.939 --> 00:03:11.160 the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves 00:03:11.160 --> 00:03:13.920 in mountain clefts, caves and strongholds. 00:03:13.919 --> 00:03:16.479 Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, 00:03:16.619 --> 00:03:19.119 the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples 00:03:19.119 --> 00:03:20.099 invaded the country. 00:03:20.780 --> 00:03:22.739 They camped on the land and ruined the crops 00:03:22.739 --> 00:03:23.799 all the way to Gaza 00:03:23.799 --> 00:03:26.119 and did not spare a living thing for Israel, 00:03:26.239 --> 00:03:27.959 neither sheep nor cattle nor donkeys. 00:03:28.679 --> 00:03:30.739 They came up with their livestock and their tents 00:03:30.739 --> 00:03:32.219 like swarms of locusts. 00:03:32.519 --> 00:03:34.819 It was impossible to investigated, 00:06:52.479 --> 00:06:54.819 they were told Gideon, son of Joash, did it. 00:06:55.279 --> 00:06:56.979 The people of the town demanded of Joash, 00:06:57.060 --> 00:06:57.799 Bring out your son. 00:06:57.899 --> 00:07:00.079 He must die because he has broken down Baal's altar 00:07:00.079 --> 00:07:01.759 and cut down the Asherah pole beside it. 00:07:02.240 --> 00:07:04.439 But Joash replied to the hostile crowd around him, 00:07:04.439 --> 00:07:06.740 Are you going to plead Baal's cause? 00:07:06.939 --> 00:07:08.319 Are you trying to save him? 00:07:08.319 --> 00:07:11.120 Whoever fights for him shall be put to death by morning. 00:07:11.219 --> 00:07:12.319 If Baal really is a god, 00:07:12.420 --> 00:07:14.759 he can defend himself when someone breaks down his altar. 00:07:15.379 --> 00:07:17.279 So because Gideon broke down Baal's altar, 00:07:17.420 --> 00:07:19.500 they gave him the name Jerob Baal that day, 00:07:19.560 --> 00:07:21.519 saying, Let Baal contend with him. 00:07:22.279 --> 00:07:23.819 Now all the Midianites, Amalekites, 00:07:23.879 --> 00:07:25.459 and other eastern peoples joined forces 00:07:25.459 --> 00:07:26.560 and crossed over the Jordan 00:07:26.560 --> 00:07:28.199 and camped in the valley of Jezreel. 00:07:28.800 --> 00:07:30.500 Then the spirit of the Lord came on Gideon 00:07:30.500 --> 00:07:31.339 and he blew a trumpet, 00:07:31.579 --> 00:07:33.259 summoning the Abiezrites to follow him. 00:07:33.259 --> 00:07:35.360 He sent messengers throughout Manasseh, 00:07:35.779 --> 00:07:36.920 calling them to arms, 00:07:36.920 --> 00:07:39.319 and also into Asher, Zebulun, Naphtali, 00:07:39.680 --> 00:07:41.180 so that they too went up to meet them. 00:07:41.879 --> 00:07:42.740 Gideon said to God, 00:07:42.819 --> 00:07:45.240 If you will save Israel by my hand as you have promised, 00:07:45.379 --> 00:07:48.220 look, I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. 00:07:48.480 --> if Gideon and his generation thought that. 00:09:29.379 --> 00:09:33.639 Here they are, seven years of misery 00:09:33.639 --> 00:09:36.419 at the hands of the people of Midian. 00:09:37.000 --> 00:09:39.459 And then they cry out in pain to God. 00:09:40.239 --> 00:09:41.519 But what's God's response? 00:09:42.519 --> 00:09:45.079 First he sends them a preacher, 00:09:45.699 --> 00:09:48.159 not the freedom fighter they're hoping for. 00:09:48.159 --> 00:09:49.879 Now, why is that? 00:09:49.939 --> 00:09:51.120 It's a really important question 00:09:51.120 --> 00:09:52.740 that we'll think about today. 00:09:53.059 --> 00:09:54.679 The answer is that God wants to tackle 00:09:54.679 --> 00:09:58.219 the root problem in their heart. 00:09:58.299 --> 00:10:00.819 He wants to get to the heart of the matter, 00:10:01.439 --> 00:10:05.659 which is far deeper than temporary social distress. 00:10:05.659 --> 00:10:09.719 And what we need to understand is that God's desire 00:10:09.719 --> 00:10:11.639 and God's design, they don't change. 00:10:12.480 --> 00:10:14.839 God would want us to see, 00:10:14.899 --> 00:10:16.299 just as he wanted Gideon's generation, 00:10:16.459 --> 00:10:17.919 to see the danger of sin. 00:10:18.980 --> 00:10:20.399 So that we see, 00:10:20.939 --> 00:10:25.959 when he extends salvation from spiritual death as a gift, 00:10:27.319 --> 00:10:28.679 that we see that as good news. 00:10:28.679 --> 00:10:34.079 And God will still use his word in order to convict people, 00:10:34.559 --> 00:10:36.439 to convict us of our sin, 00:10:37.120 --> 00:10:40.519 to show us our forgetfulness of him, 00:10:40.799 --> 00:10:44.399 to expose our idolatry that goes on in our hearts, 00:10:44.519 --> 00:10:48.239 in order, ultimately, that we would turn to Jesus. 00:10:48.240 --> 00:10:52.960 So today, as we think about Judges 6, 00:10:53.060 --> 00:10:55.919 God would use this story in the life of Gideon 00:10:55.919 --> 00:10:59.399 in order to reveal to you and to me today 00:10:59.399 --> 00:11:01.980 our own sin and weakness and our need of the Saviour. 00:11:03.180 --> 00:11:05.860 And he would also, with the help of the Spirit, 00:11:06.019 --> 00:11:08.899 reveal Jesus as the greater deliverer than Gideon, 00:11:09.820 --> 00:11:11.279 so that we might trust him, 00:11:11.759 --> 00:11:16.000 that our trust for him and our love of him would grow. 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:18.840 So there's a big chapter, lots to cover, 00:11:18.919 --> 00:11:20.200 so let's dive in. 00:11:20.259 --> 00:11:22.779 And let's think, first of all, of God's criticism. 00:11:22.960 --> 00:11:26.279 That's what we focus on in the first 10 verses. 00:11:27.259 --> 00:11:30.679 Remember, verse 7 onwards, 00:11:30.820 --> 00:11:33.419 we see sermon before salvation 00:11:33.419 --> 00:11:35.519 because God wants their hearts. 00:11:36.960 --> 00:11:38.659 Their immediate problem, 00:11:39.159 --> 00:11:41.220 their being oppressed and impoverished, 00:11:41.299 --> 00:11:42.700 but God probes deeper. 00:11:43.259 --> 00:11:45.299 And that's his kindness. 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:46.919 To his own people, 00:11:47.019 --> 00:11:49.799 to expose the deeper spiritual problem 00:11:49.799 --> 00:11:50.720 that lurks within, 00:11:51.279 --> 00:11:53.799 so that true healing might come. 00:11:55.080 --> 00:11:58.919 We might think, perhaps, of visiting a GP. 00:11:59.600 --> 00:12:01.399 We have a presenting problem. 00:12:02.159 --> 00:12:06.159 But then the doctor begins to ask some questions 00:12:06.159 --> 00:12:12.199 and then sends us away and runs some tests. 00:12:12.779 --> 00:12:14.279 And between those questions and those tests, 00:12:14.360 --> 00:12:16.159 it reveals a deeper problem, 00:12:16.299 --> 00:12:18.939 perhaps a problem that requires surgery. 00:12:18.940 --> 00:12:24.420 It is a kindness to probe beyond the surface. 00:12:24.419 --> 00:12:28.319 And God uses his word in particular to his people 00:12:28.319 --> 00:12:30.179 through his prophet, his preacher, 00:12:30.740 --> 00:12:35.199 to probe forgetfulness and idolatry. 00:12:37.079 --> 00:12:42.319 So let's look at what they have forgotten. 00:12:42.979 --> 00:12:43.519 Verse 8, 00:12:43.519 --> 00:12:45.079 this is what the Lord, the God of Israel says. 00:12:45.159 --> 00:12:46.340 I brought you up out of Egypt. 00:12:46.659 --> 00:12:48.600 I rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians. 00:12:48.759 --> 00:12:50.519 I delivered you from all your oppressors. 00:12:50.740 --> 00:12:52.379 I drove them out and gave you your land. 00:12:52.379 --> 00:13:09.139 I wonder just as Israel had forgotten God do we forget God as our creator that God has made us 00:13:09.139 --> 00:13:14.580 in his image that we might know him enjoy him and love him and that we would show loyalty 00:13:14.580 --> 00:13:28.300 and obedience to him I wonder too if we forget God is our provider and just as a Gideon or Gideon's 00:13:28.300 --> 00:13:34.000 generation was reminded that God had provided rescue and a land for them every good gift that 00:13:34.000 --> 00:13:40.259 we enjoy today and every day of our life comes from our God but when we forget that what follows 00:13:40.259 --> 00:13:49.419 is a loss of gratitude to God we think well this is all my stuff and do we forget God as saviour 00:13:49.419 --> 00:13:59.019 in which case we become cold to Jesus he doesn't seem like good news we don't need him and his 00:13:59.019 --> 00:14:06.919 salvation or as Christians we can become complacent we can lose sight of the wonder of the fact that 00:14:06.919 --> 00:14:13.000 as Paul said in Ephesians that though we were spiritually dead and spiritually slaves to sin 00:14:13.000 --> 00:14:18.679 and heading for for destruction God in mercy and love sent Jesus and Jesus has rescued us 00:14:18.679 --> 00:14:29.120 we need to be reminded about our forgetfulness what about our heart idols you know for for them it's 00:14:29.120 --> 00:14:37.200 Baal and Asherah but what about us what are the what are the heart idols in my life and in your life they can be 00:14:37.200 --> 00:14:48.600 anything that we look to for our source of identity our source of salvation our source of comfort 00:14:48.600 --> 00:15:00.560 there is not God for example money is recognized by Jesus as perhaps the dominant idol and isn't it easy 00:15:00.560 --> 00:15:07.460 for us to think that money makes us somebody I am what I own or I am because I consume because I have 00:15:07.460 --> 00:15:14.980 all this stuff then I am a somebody this is me we can also look to our money to give us salvation 00:15:14.980 --> 00:15:22.840 that we can buy our way so we think to security to prosperity or buy our way out of trouble 00:15:22.840 --> 00:15:33.139 we can look to money to provide comfort for us now like the parable Jesus told of of the rich fool 00:15:33.139 --> 00:15:39.039 who said take life easy eat drink and be merry not recognizing that his his life would be taken from 00:15:39.039 --> 00:15:45.099 him that very night see we are made in the image of God and we are to find our identity from him 00:15:45.099 --> 00:15:51.219 God has sent Jesus to be our savior and we are to look to him for salvation God sends the spirit to be 00:15:51.219 --> 00:15:59.099 our grace because remember here's the people who've forgotten God 00:18:51.599 --> 00:18:56.259 here's a group of people who are turning to idols here's a group of people with no sign of repentance verse 25 to 32 he is to tear down the the false worship then the Asherah pole the the altar to bail he's to 00:25:52.319 --> 00:26:00.740 build an altar to the one true God and he's to sacrifice there and other eastern peoples they join forces against God's people 00:28:26.579 --> 00:28:33.359 verse 34 then this the spirit of Lord came on Gideon and he blew a trumpet and he summons the people to follow 00:28:33.359 --> 00:28:39.079 Gideon is the spirit-filled deliverer and the people rallied to him in order to carry out God's plan 00:28:39.079 --> 00:28:43.919 question is though why come to
