the Word of God will speak to us in so many different capacities. 00:00:54.079 --> 00:01:05.420 Whether you are a child or you're an adult, whether you're a new believer or a lifelong follower of God. 00:01:12.840 --> 00:01:19.299 Knowing that the Lord is consistent, He is a sure foundation for our lives. 00:01:19.299 --> 00:01:24.120 And today, we're going to go over the parable of the wise and the foolish builders. 00:01:24.620 --> 00:01:27.019 Many of you may know this particular parable. 00:01:27.959 --> 00:01:34.560 And it's so interesting when we think of this, there are some things that are glaringly obvious. 00:01:34.560 --> 00:01:39.700 For some of us, we may have built a sandcastle before. 00:01:40.280 --> 00:01:48.480 And how easy it is, that sandcastle, to be completely decimated and destroyed by, well, water, a river, right? 00:01:48.500 --> 00:01:49.939 Or an ocean, if you will. 00:01:50.560 --> 00:01:55.780 I know many times when I was a kid, I wanted to build a sandcastle as much as possible. 00:01:55.920 --> 00:01:58.659 And then when the water came through, it was completely destroyed. 00:01:59.020 --> 00:02:01.000 It's a very similar parallel to what we found. 00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:05.400 When we think of the construction world, right? 00:02:05.420 --> 00:02:06.459 We think of architecture. 00:02:06.599 --> 00:02:10.599 We think of all of these buildings that have happened, that have been built throughout history. 00:02:10.780 --> 00:02:16.719 How important it is for us to consider the location and how the building is built. 00:02:17.360 --> 00:02:25.039 For those of you who may have worked in real estate before, it is the three rules of real estate is location, location, location, right? 00:02:25.039 --> 00:02:34.579 And so there's a lot of truth that we find not only in real estate, but also when we are considering this parable. 00:02:35.419 --> 00:02:39.439 Now, how many of you, I don't have a picture of it, but you can think of it for a second here. 00:02:39.500 --> 00:02:42.639 How many of you have seen the Leaning Tower of Pisa? 00:02:44.639 --> 00:02:45.939 Even if it's a picture, right? 00:02:46.019 --> 00:02:47.500 You get the idea, right? 00:02:47.819 --> 00:02:49.560 This tower is leaning, right? 00:02:49.560 --> 00:02:54.599 And, you know, it's a 185-foot tilt. 00:02:55.219 --> 00:02:56.840 And it's not... 00:02:56.840 --> 00:02:59.560 What's fascinating is it's still tilting over time. 00:02:59.960 --> 00:03:07.599 And eventually, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is going to be the Fallen Down Tower, or I don't know what you call that, on-the-floor Tower of Pisa. 00:03:07.599 --> 00:03:18.759 And it's a very good example of when we think of architecture, when we think of this idea of foundations in the physical or in our everyday world. 00:03:19.400 --> 00:03:23.120 Eventually, that foundation is just, well, it's not really good. 00:03:23.680 --> 00:03:25.340 Eventually, that tower is going to fall. 00:03:25.500 --> 00:03:30.259 And as much as I like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, I kind of want it to stay put. 00:03:30.379 --> 00:03:32.120 I don't want it to eventually fall. 00:03:32.219 --> 00:03:34.439 Can we at least somewhat agree with that, right? 00:03:34.439 --> 00:03:38.819 It would be unfortunate for any sort of tower to fall over and to be destroyed. 00:03:39.620 --> 00:03:48.840 Well, when it comes to towers, we can think of the parallel that comes with our foundation that exists in Christ. 00:03:49.960 --> 00:03:54.079 For Christ is our rock, our salvation. 00:03:54.699 --> 00:03:55.900 He is our safety. 00:03:56.099 --> 00:03:57.199 He is our security. 00:03:57.199 --> 00:04:04.280 And we are to come to Christ as the solid rock, the cornerstone of our lives for our salvation. 00:04:05.000 --> 00:04:09.379 It's important for us to build upon that foundation in Him. 00:04:09.959 --> 00:04:11.019 I want us to turn. 00:04:11.359 --> 00:04:14.299 You 00:04:56.439 Where Jesus is asking this question. 00:04:57.720 --> 00:05:00.640 Why do you call me Lord, Lord and not do what I tell you? 00:05:01.699 --> 00:05:03.180 Well, that's a good question, isn't it? 00:05:03.520 --> 00:05:08.500 It's a good question that we can not only think about back then, but we can think about now. 00:05:09.319 --> 00:05:14.800 It's important for us to obviously believe in Jesus Christ. 00:05:14.800 --> 00:05:23.520 But it's also as important for us to follow within the footsteps of Christ and God's call for our lives. 00:05:24.120 --> 00:05:26.020 In other 00:05:36.600 To consider, to think about where does God want you to be? 00:05:36.600 --> 00:05:41.920 Now, obviously, for all of us, He wants all of us to be in that salvation, right? 00:05:41.960 --> 00:05:43.720 To believe in Him and to be saved. 00:05:44.660 --> 00:05:49.800 But beginning from that, that new life in Christ, we are to be on a journey in Him. 00:05:51.260 --> 00:05:52.840 And so, verse 47, 00:05:52.839 --> 00:06:10.219 And what's very important about this idea that you find in Luke compared to the Gospel of Matthew 00:06:10.219 --> 00:06:16.500 is this intentionality where you are digging and you are preparing the way for the foundation. 00:06:16.500 --> 00:06:23.399 Much like how it is important for us as, before we believe in Christ, to seek out truth. 00:06:23.920 --> 00:06:25.180 To seek out the way. 00:06:25.300 --> 00:06:26.779 To seek out the newness of life. 00:06:26.879 --> 00:06:29.459 To seek out the light of Christ. 00:06:30.540 --> 00:06:34.300 It's much like how Scripture says to seek first the kingdom of God. 00:06:34.899 --> 00:06:37.040 We are to seek after the Lord. 00:06:37.120 --> 00:06:39.639 Much like how we found in other parables. that we have. 00:06:46.500 --> 00:06:52.019 And so this imagery then is one who is digging deep and laying the foundation on the rock. 00:06:52.920 --> 00:06:56.040 And again, this foundation is what 00:07:09.180 You find that in both cases, in both Matthew and in Luke, there is a storm that happens. 00:07:09.860 --> 00:07:13.540 And it is the question of where is your foundation? 00:07:13.540 --> 00:07:20.860 Now, for a lot of us, we may think for a second, who in the world would build their house on sand? 00:07:20.860 --> 00:07:30.699 That just doesn't make any sense to us because not only the culture that we live in, but also, okay, it's nice to have a house. 00:07:30.699 --> 00:07:38.319 But if it gets destroyed within a storm because it's not indicating, well, you have the storm that's happening. 00:07:38.319 --> 00:07:42.779 And the one that's on the sand is the one that's going to ruin here. 00:07:43.099 --> 00:07:45.199 Just like we're finding within the scripture, right? 00:07:45.240 --> 00:07:50.540 When a flood came, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it because it had been well built, right? 00:07:50.579 --> 00:07:51.740 Well built on the foundation. 00:07:52.159 --> 00:07:57.680 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. 00:07:57.680 --> 00:08:02.800 When the stream broke against it, it immediately fell and the ruin of that house was great. 00:08:03.040 --> 00:08:18.360 I think of, and maybe you might, I think of this, where you have a house and it's in the wrong place where a, literally a river or an avalanche comes in and it destroys the house. 00:08:18.360 --> 00:08:21.000 Or if you build a house by a volcano. 00:08:21.480 --> 00:08:30.060 I remember when I was living in Hawaii, I remember that there's some places where it's saying, hey, you're right by a volcano. 00:08:30.259 --> 00:08:36.240 And there's some disclaimers on here that you have to be careful that the volcano might erupt, you know. 00:08:36.580 --> 00:08:40.120 But at least there's some sort of disclaimer with that. 00:08:40.120 --> 00:08:48.899 It's just so important for us to be mindful, not only when we're building literal houses, but where we place our faith and trust in. 00:08:49.720 --> 00:08:59.740 And so in this, before the parable, both in Matthew and Luke, you have the warnings of false prophets. 00:09:00.080 --> 00:09:03.840 You have also the importance of bearing good fruit. 00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:07.220 I want us to turn back for a second here, right? 00:09:07.220 --> 00:09:13.399 You have where Jesus pronounces to love our enemies, right? 00:09:13.440 --> 00:09:18.080 Where it says in Luke chapter 6, verse 27, love your enemies. 00:09:18.560 --> 00:09:20.040 Do good to those who hate you. 00:09:20.200 --> 00:09:21.460 Bless those who curse you. 00:09:21.820 --> 00:09:23.180 Pray for those who abuse you. 00:09:23.220 --> 00:09:24.920 That's very difficult. 00:09:25.040 --> 00:09:26.000 Easier said than done. 00:09:26.500 --> 00:09:30.000 But what Christ calls for us to do is something that is significant. 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:32.700 It goes on into judging others, right? 00:09:32.820 --> 00:09:33.860 Judge not, right? 00:09:33.860 --> 00:09:37.600 And it goes on further about the tree and its fruit. 00:09:37.680 --> 00:09:46.659 When we're talking about this idea of prophets, pastors, you shall know them by their fruit. 00:09:47.139 --> 00:09:52.440 And it's so important for us when we're thinking about the context that is leading up to the foundation. 00:09:53.240 --> 00:10:00.879 Well, one way to consider someone's fruit is to consider the congregation, the hearers, where is their foundation at? 00:10:00.879 --> 00:10:11.879 That is one way that you can assess a pastor and who they are as a person, if they are true or false, at least when we're talking about this context here. 00:10:12.439 --> 00:10:19.120 And so we find that there is this kind of this two-ticket system that exists. 00:10:19.620 --> 00:10:24.620 That we are to believe in Christ and we are to be saved and we're called to be transformed. 00:10:24.620 --> 00:10:33.480 We're called to be molded by him to follow in those footsteps to do what the Lord wants for us. 00:10:33.980 --> 00:10:46.139 Now, when we think of this idea of obedience and following in the Lord, it's understanding that what Christ has for us is something that is much better than what the world has to offer. 00:10:46.139 --> 00:10:53.019 For some of us, we may think of, well, how there's emptiness within the world, right? 00:10:53.059 --> 00:11:02.279 How we think of there's a lot of famous people and they have emptiness in their riches, despite their fame, despite their notoriety. 00:11:03.439 --> 00:11:04.080 Well, wait a minute. 00:11:04.819 --> 00:11:08.639 I thought if everyone, I thought if you were going to be famous, you would have it all. 00:11:08.639 --> 00:11:14.039 But yet there's so many people who are famous and yet there's this emptiness inside of them. 00:11:14.120 --> 00:11:14.960 There's this void. 00:11:15.100 --> 00:11:19.299 There's this sense of, I've got it all, but yet I feel so empty. 00:11:20.139 --> 00:11:22.139 I hope that none of you have felt this way. 00:11:22.199 --> 00:11:24.500 But if you have, seek the Lord. 00:11:25.439 --> 00:11:29.439 It's much like how some people, they have all the money in the world, right? 00:11:30.240 --> 00:11:32.000 You can buy planes and houses. 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:36.360 I mean, I know that sounds nice for a lot of us to have a new house or a new car. 00:11:36.360 --> 00:11:45.580 But when you place your trust in that which is failing, very often you find people, they have that void, that sense of emptiness. 00:11:46.220 --> 00:11:51.240 It's because they are seeking the things, well, in the wrong places. 00:11:51.379 --> 00:11:53.820 They're not finding the solid rock. 00:11:54.100 --> 00:11:56.580 They're not finding the foundation. 00:11:57.200 --> 00:12:06.340 So we are to hear, we are to trust in the Lord, and we are to follow in those footsteps because God has a much better way for us. 00:12:06.360 --> 00:12:15.720 A much better way for us to be transformed, to live and love like him, to put on the new self, to exhibit love, peace, that's something that is far greater. 00:13:06.059 --> 00:13:08.899 And so to hear and to do is the house on the rock. 00:13:08.980 --> 00:13:11.419 The storm hits and the foundation remains. things that we learn when it comes to the word of God and being in prayer. 00:14:34.179 --> 00:14:37.419 And you have to think of how are you changing? 00:14:38.259 --> 00:14:40.719 Because if you really think about it, 00:14:41.259 --> 00:14:48.519 for you to receive the greatest gift that will affect your life here today and for eternity, 00:14:48.519 --> 00:14:50.620 you would want to to live your life differently? 00:15:06.460 --> 00:15:10.840 If you don't, then that's a different discussion. 00:15:10.980 --> 00:15:12.080 But the greatest gift, 00:15:13.080 --> 00:15:14.759 you represents trials, right? 00:15:50.359 --> 00:15:54.039 Some may think of it as the refiner's fire, right? 00:15:54.079 --> 00:15:54.639 How we get, 00:15:54.979 --> 00:15:57.759 there's the sense of testing that happens within our life. 00:15:57.919 --> 00:16:00.859 And then even later on with the final judgment, 00:16:01.079 --> 00:16:04.179 we can think of that later on within scripture. 00:16:05.179 --> 00:16:08.299 And to hear and do is faith and works. 00:16:08.299 --> 00:16:11.620 Now, it's very important for us to think for a moment. 00:16:13.299 --> 00:16:18.740 You notice in this parable that both people build houses, right? 00:16:19.379 --> 00:16:22.079 And when we look at it from here, 00:16:22.219 --> 00:16:27.240 we can see that the works that you do is the house. 00:16:27.539 --> 00:16:29.179 It's a representation of that. 00:16:29.179 --> 00:16:36.039 And it's important for us to see that works do not save you. 00:16:37.639 --> 00:16:40.000 It is the foundation that is in Christ. 00:16:40.179 --> 00:16:44.139 It is believing in Christ and having that relationship with him. 00:16:44.399 --> 00:16:46.179 That is what's going to matter. 00:16:47.359 --> 00:16:49.039 And when we see it like this, 00:16:49.079 --> 00:16:52.979 it helps us with our understanding for what God is going for. 00:16:52.980 --> 00:17:01.779 Now, when Christ is saying that not doing them is like someone who doesn't build their house upon the rock, 00:17:02.100 --> 00:17:06.160 he is saying that you believing in Christ is just, 00:17:06.400 --> 00:17:11.640 it is important just like you are to do the work that Christ has for you. 00:17:11.759 --> 00:17:16.360 And it's important for me to point out that we are not saved by what we do. 00:17:16.460 --> similar in this idea that we are like in that sinking sand or that sinking water as it were. 00:35:30.900 --> 00:35:34.980 And that Christ is extending that hand to pull you out of the sand.
