sections. 00:02:56.340 --> 00:03:04.099 And each of these sections instruct us in a unique way of how to call upon our great God 00:03:04.099 --> 00:03:06.780 when we need help in the day of trouble. 00:03:08.199 --> 00:03:13.259 I'm guessing there's a lot of people in the room that know what trouble is, 00:03:14.039 --> 00:03:20.180 but maybe need some help in knowing how to respond when trouble comes knocking. 00:03:21.099 --> 00:03:24.960 So in Psalm 86, we're going to see three things in these three sections. 00:03:25.759 --> 00:03:30.979 We're going to be shown how to seek God and call call out to God with persistent praying. 00:04:11.800 --> 00:04:17.759 Persistence is being steady in a course of action, 00:04:18.759 --> 00:04:23.939 especially when there's difficulties and verse 1, incline your heart, O Lord. 00:04:43.659 --> 00:04:45.599 That's the first pleading. 00:04:46.099 --> 00:04:48.439 And then answer me, second pleading. 00:04:48.819 --> 00:04:50.879 Preserve my life is the third pleading. 00:04:51.319 --> 00:04:53.219 Save your servant is the fourth pleading. 00:04:53.360 --> 00:04:55.699 Be gracious to me, O Lord, is the fifth pleading. 00:04:56.120 --> 00:04:59.240 The sixth pleading is gladden the soul of your servant. 00:05:00.120 --> 00:05:00.860 And then it goes on. 00:05:00.939 --> 00:05:02.079 Give ear, O Lord. 00:05:02.500 --> 00:05:03.459 Listen to my plea. 00:05:03.459 --> 00:05:10.639 There are eight petitions that David makes in the first seven verses of this psalm. 00:05:11.639 --> 00:05:13.019 It's kind of desperate. 00:05:13.019 --> 00:05:20.479 But there is this persistence, this repeated seeking after God. 00:05:20.479 --> 00:05:26.180 Because you will notice in almost every one of these verses in pleadings, 00:05:26.419 --> 00:05:30.459 there is a direct reference to God somehow, some way, 00:05:30.939 --> 00:05:34.479 either in an O Lord or an O God or in you. 00:05:36.659 --> 00:05:39.279 Eight times, David cries out for help. 00:05:39.279 --> 00:05:41.579 That's what all of these have in common. 00:05:42.019 --> 00:05:44.319 They're all petitions for help. 00:05:44.699 --> 00:05:47.639 Different ways, all crying out, 00:05:48.199 --> 00:05:49.239 Help me, God. 00:05:49.839 --> 00:05:50.559 Help me. 00:05:50.679 --> 00:05:51.839 Troubles come knocking. 00:05:52.599 --> 00:05:53.979 Help me, God. 00:05:55.379 --> 00:05:57.559 Now, it's interesting that these aren't questions. 00:05:58.079 --> 00:06:00.500 In the Hebrew, these are actually commands. 00:06:00.779 --> 00:06:01.500 They're imperatives. 00:06:02.039 --> 00:06:04.359 It's like David is telling God what to do. 00:06:04.419 --> 00:06:04.899 Help me. 00:06:05.199 --> 00:06:06.539 But you've got to take it like this. 00:06:06.540 --> 00:06:11.620 Remember when Jesus was walking on the water and he calls Peter out to walk out to him. 00:06:11.720 --> 00:06:13.760 And Peter goes walking out on the water to Jesus. 00:06:14.020 --> 00:06:17.720 And all of a sudden, Peter becomes distracted by the wind and the waves. 00:06:17.780 --> 00:06:18.480 Remember what happened? 00:06:18.960 --> 00:06:20.140 Peter starts 00:06:46.439 --> 00:06:47.399 Pleading for help. 00:06:48.720 --> 00:06:51.339 Now, you may be asking yourself the question, 00:06:51.480 --> 00:06:54.879 well, wouldn't have one been sufficient? 00:06:55.519 --> 00:06:56.279 Why eight? 00:06:56.279 --> 00:07:00.679 It's very instructive for us. 00:07:01.899 --> 00:07:05.519 Because I don't know about you, but when I am confronted with trouble, 00:07:05.879 --> 00:07:07.879 when I feel like I'm being attacked, 00:07:08.479 --> 00:07:14.779 it's going to take me a while to settle my heart in the goodness of God. 00:07:14.779 --> 00:07:22.879 And what we see happening over these eight petitions is David calling to mind certain things, 00:07:22.919 --> 00:07:23.979 we're going to look at it in a second, 00:07:24.500 --> 00:07:27.699 to settle his heart before God. 00:07:28.079 --> 00:07:29.739 When we're facing trouble, 00:07:30.099 --> 00:07:33.119 it's going to take a little process of persistent praying 00:07:33.119 --> 00:07:37.899 to settle our hearts on the truth of who God is. 00:07:37.899 --> 00:07:51.560 There are a bunch of reasons in this Psalm for these petitions. 00:07:52.019 --> 00:07:54.060 You'll notice it with the word for. 00:07:54.699 --> 00:07:56.839 Incline your heart, O Lord, and answer me, 00:07:57.019 --> 00:07:59.539 for I am poor and needy. 00:07:59.899 --> 00:08:02.339 Verse 2, for I am godly. 00:08:03.139 --> 00:08:06.719 Verse 3, for to you do I call all the day long. 00:08:06.720 --> 00:08:10.980 Verse 4, for to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. 00:08:11.140 --> 00:08:14.840 Verse 5 is the greatest of all fours. 00:08:15.900 --> 00:08:18.780 For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, 00:08:19.080 --> 00:08:22.660 abounding in steadfast love to 00:09:08.560 But it's verse 5 that when his heart hits that truth about God, 00:09:08.700 --> 00:09:11.360 it will change the tone of the psalm. 00:09:11.360 --> 00:09:15.340 For you, O Lord, are good
