Philippians, they would have been proud Roman citizens. 00:06:16.139 --> 00:06:20.439 And they would feel tremendous pressure to live worthy of being called Roman. 00:06:21.399 --> 00:06:24.579 But now that Christ has saved them, now that Christ has saved us, 00:06:24.579 --> 00:06:31.019 we need to think of ourselves under a different citizenship, a citizenship in heaven. 00:06:32.279 --> Bible addresses lots of areas that we need to hear. 00:07:37.420 --> 00:07:40.560 And that's why we need to saturate in God's word all the time. 00:07:41.840 --> 00:07:48.040 But the first thing that Paul addresses appears to be the primary way to live to make Christ look great. 00:07:49.319 --> 00:07:52.600 It is what he spends the majority of the letter talking about. 00:07:52.600 --> 00:07:59.160 And it's what he devotes the most beautiful poem of the New Testament to help us do. 00:08:00.760 --> 00:08:01.860 This is what it is. 00:08:01.980 --> 00:08:07.500 Live in a way that shows the greatness of Christ by remaining united. 00:08:10.620 --> 00:08:13.080 Not united around superficial things. 00:08:13.460 --> 00:08:15.560 Not even things like evangelism. 00:08:15.560 --> 00:08:24.280 We make Christ look great in our unity when we share in Jesus' humble way of thinking. 00:08:28.759 --> 00:08:34.679 So for the rest of this morning, we'll hear four aspects of how to live to show the greatness of Christ. 00:08:35.600 --> 00:08:40.620 The first one, when we remain united while under attack, 00:08:40.620 --> 00:08:45.519 this is a clear sign of the truth of the gospel. 00:08:47.679 --> 00:08:53.500 The second aspect is that it's not external opposition that really threatens us. 00:08:53.620 --> 00:08:59.679 What really has the potential to divide us is our own self-seeking thinking. 00:09:02.899 --> 00:09:08.299 Thirdly, we remain united by sharing Jesus' humble way of thinking. 00:09:08.299 --> 00:09:15.620 And lastly, we believe that Christ is great because of his humility. 00:09:17.219 --> 00:09:20.699 When we believe that he is great because of his humility, 00:09:20.939 --> 00:09:22.740 we will share in his thinking. 00:09:25.299 --> attack. 00:09:39.899 --> 00:09:43.720 The Philippians had been getting the gospel out into their city 00:09:43.720 --> 00:09:48.480 and no doubt they were already living in ways that showed that their primary loyalty 00:09:48.480 --> 00:09:51.419 was not to Rome but to Christ. 00:09:52.080 --> 00:09:54.460 What do you think that caused? 00:09:54.460 --> 00:09:59.500 Jesus said, 00:10:00.920 --> 00:10:02.320 if you were of the world, 00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:05.860 the world would love you as its own. 00:10:06.860 --> 00:10:09.080 But because you were not of the world, 00:10:10.420 --> 00:10:12.879 but I chose you out of the world, 00:10:14.240 --> 00:10:15.920 therefore the world hates you. 00:10:19.320 --> 00:10:20.780 We are citizens of heaven. 00:10:20.779 --> 00:10:24.759 If one thing to make clear, 00:10:54.139 --> 00:10:57.139 if we ourselves are offensive in our manner 00:10:57.139 --> 00:11:01.399 and people are hostile towards us because we are offensive, 00:11:13.039 They just approach people and say, 00:11:13.240 --> 00:11:14.480 do you know you're going to heaven? 00:11:14.480 --> 00:11:17.399 Okay, confronting, maybe it's loving. 00:11:18.279 --> 00:11:19.560 And then even when Christians go, 00:11:19.700 --> 00:11:21.460 yes, I believe in Jesus, I'm going to heaven. 00:11:21.759 --> 00:11:22.519 They're like, are you sure? 00:11:23.100 --> 00:11:24.139 And then they just walk away. 00:11:25.500 --> 00:11:26.360 Now, they're offensive. 00:11:28.039 --> 00:11:29.620 Don't call that persecution. 00:11:30.100 --> 00:11:32.480 But even if you are gentle and considerate 00:11:32.480 --> 00:11:34.340 and truthful to the gospel, 00:11:35.159 --> 00:11:36.560 it will bring about opposition 00:11:36.559 --> 00:11:41.139 because people will either submit to Christ 00:11:41.139 --> 00:11:42.519 or they will oppose him. 00:11:45.719 --> 00:11:46.899 For the Philippians, 00:11:47.379 --> 00:11:50.019 the opponents are either people coming into the church 00:11:50.019 --> 00:11:51.239 trying to teach them to, 00:11:51.779 --> 00:11:54.199 they have to submit to the law of Moses, 00:11:54.579 --> 00:11:58.959 or maybe the opponents are just the surrounding society, 00:12:00.019 --> 00:12:01.239 the surrounding authorities. 00:12:01.240 --> 00:12:04.159 I think that's more likely because in verse 30, 00:12:05.279 --> 00:12:08.320 Paul compares their conflict to his current imprisonment 00:12:08.320 --> 00:12:11.620 and also his original imprisonment in Philippi. 00:12:11.779 --> 00:12:14.399 But it could just be any opponent's. 00:12:15.539 --> 00:12:19.919 The important thing is that the church holds rank. 00:12:20.899 --> 00:12:23.799 Their chief officer, Paul, is absent. 00:12:24.620 --> 00:12:25.759 But that doesn't matter. 00:12:25.759 --> 00:12:29.200 For the sake of showing that Christ is great 00:12:29.200 --> 00:12:31.679 and his gospel is worth believing and sharing, 00:12:31.799 --> 00:12:34.679 they are to stand firm in one spirit, 00:12:34.779 --> 00:12:37.620 with one mind, striving side by side 00:12:37.620 --> 00:12:39.100 for the faith of the gospel. 00:12:39.240 --> 00:12:40.360 It's Philippians are to have the same spirit, 00:12:59.220 --> 00:13:00.960 the same goal motivating them. 00:13:01.720 --> 00:13:05.679 They have the same mind controlling their every movement.
