00:00:27.080 or prayer book for the ancient Israelites. 00:00:27.079 --> 00:00:33.359 The Psalms have been sung and prayed and memorized by many generations of Jews and Christians 00:00:33.359 --> 00:00:34.140 throughout history. 00:00:35.060 --> 00:00:39.719 We've entitled this sermon series Songs of Hope in Uncertain Times because that's what 00:00:39.719 --> 00:00:40.599 the Psalms are. 00:00:41.259 --> 00:00:46.379 The Psalms meet us in the midst of a world of turmoil and uncertainty, and they help us to 00:00:46.379 --> 00:00:49.659 approach God and draw near to God through prayer. but it's a strong assurance that points you forward 00:04:23.879 --> 00:04:26.219 to that great and good reality to come. 00:04:28.620 --> 00:04:37.599 There are all kinds of things in this world that awaken our anticipation, that are little previews 00:04:37.599 --> 00:04:40.859 of something greater and more glorious to come. 00:04:41.459 --> 00:04:44.419 And that's what this last psalm is meant to be. 00:04:44.420 --> 00:04:52.259 It's meant to be a preview of a glorious eternity of uninterrupted praise. 00:04:53.300 --> 00:04:59.480 It's a conclusion to the psalms and it's the conclusion to psalm is inviting us to do is to rehearse together for a glorious eternity. 00:05:21.680 --> 00:05:24.639 In order to do all this, I want to look at this psalm from three vantage points. 00:05:24.740 --> 00:05:26.899 So first I want to look at Psalm 150 in itself. 00:05:28.019 --> 00:05:32.120 Second, I want to zoom out and look at Psalm 150 as the conclusion to the psalms. 00:05:32.120 --> 00:05:54.519 Praise, right? 00:05:55.560 --> 00:05:56.680 Praise the Lord. 00:05:56.680 --> 00:06:01.500 It's a short, straightforward, loud, and clear psalm. 00:06:02.579 --> 00:06:04.840 Verse 1 tells us where the Lord should be praised. 00:06:05.120 --> 00:06:06.540 And the answer is everywhere. 00:06:07.259 --> 00:06:08.740 On earth and in heaven. 00:06:08.900 --> 00:06:09.660 In his sanctuary. 00:06:09.860 --> 00:06:11.019 That is, in his temple. 00:06:11.960 --> 00:06:15.720 The temple was the particular place that God had promised to meet with his people 00:06:15.720 --> 00:06:18.439 who gathered on earth in the Old Testament. 00:06:18.960 --> 00:06:20.040 But also in heaven. 00:06:20.579 --> 00:06:21.699 In his mighty heavens. 00:06:21.800 --> 00:06:24.040 That's literally in the expanse of his might. 00:06:24.040 --> 00:06:29.720 That word expanse is the word used in Genesis 1 to describe the sky above. 00:06:29.800 --> 00:06:34.040 Sort of the vastness of the universe over which God reigns. 00:06:35.260 --> 00:06:36.260 So, everywhere. 00:06:36.480 --> 00:06:37.600 Everywhere in the whole universe. 00:06:37.760 --> 00:06:39.140 On earth and in heaven. 00:06:39.480 --> 00:06:41.120 God is worthy to be praised. 00:06:42.300 --> 00:06:45.220 Verse 2 tells us why the Lord should be praised. 00:06:45.320 --> 00:06:48.460 And the answer is because of awaken us to praise him. 00:07:03.579 --> 00:07:07.319 You know, the Israelites would have thought primarily of the exodus. 00:07:07.719 --> 00:07:10.859 As one of those great and mighty deeds of God. 00:07:10.939 --> 00:07:13.759 God rescuing the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt. 00:07:14.179 --> 00:07:16.899 Bring them out so they could worship him freely. 00:07:16.899 --> 00:07:19.939 Or the return from exile of God. 00:07:19.939 --> 00:07:22.299 God graciously bringing his people back home. 00:07:22.379 --> 00:07:26.479 After they had been scattered among the nations because of their sin. 00:07:26.480 --> 00:07:30.020 In the New Testament we see the miracles of Jesus. 00:07:30.220 --> 00:07:32.379 Healing the sick and feeding the hungry. 00:07:32.759 --> 00:07:35.000 Cleansing the lepers and liberating the captives. 00:07:35.100 --> 00:07:35.920 And raising the dead. 00:07:35.920 --> 00:07:38.580 All of these great and mighty works of God. 00:07:38.580 --> 00:07:45.259 But the Bible isn't only a sort of highlight film of God's great and mighty deeds. 00:07:45.340 --> 00:07:48.240 The Bible also introduces us to the character. 00:07:48.400 --> 00:07:50.020 To the person of God himself. 00:07:51.300 --> 00:07:55.639 It says, praise God for his mighty deeds and according to his excellent greatness. 00:07:55.639 --> 00:07:59.319 That is, because of his inherent worth. 00:07:59.419 --> 00:08:01.819 Because of not just what he does for us. 00:08:01.899 --> 00:08:02.560 Which is great. 00:08:02.560 --> 00:08:04.599 But ultimately because of who he is. 00:08:04.759 --> 00:08:06.719 At the core of his very being. 00:08:08.019 --> 00:08:12.959 The scriptures introduce us to the character of a God who is full of steadfast love. 00:08:13.039 --> 00:08:16.839 That is, unwavering commitment to his people. 00:08:17.399 --> 00:08:19.639 Who is full of compassion and mercy. 00:08:19.819 --> 00:08:23.899 That is, he's not only, has not only decided to be committed to us. 00:08:23.899 --> 00:08:26.339 But that he is affectionate toward us. 00:08:26.379 --> 00:08:28.639 He has a deep feeling for us. 00:08:31.839 --> 00:08:33.519 Scriptures talk about God's wisdom. 00:08:33.980 --> 00:08:36.199 That's infinite and inscrutable. 00:08:36.360 --> 00:08:39.039 That is, we can't fathom the depths of it. 00:08:40.199 --> 00:08:41.699 Talks about God's justice. 00:08:41.860 --> 00:08:42.659 Rock solid. 00:08:43.000 --> 00:08:44.179 Like the mighty mountains. 00:08:46.299 --> 00:08:48.179 So, praise the Lord everywhere. 00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:50.659 Praise the Lord because of everything he is. 00:08:50.720 --> 00:08:51.659 And everything he does. 00:08:51.980 --> 00:08:53.480 Verse 3 to 5 go on to tell us. 00:08:53.480 --> 00:08:55.120 How we should national occasions. 00:09:10.100 --> 00:09:10.879 Like the trumpet. 00:09:10.879 --> 00:09:15.920 That was used to sort of summon people to a solemn assembly in the Old Testament. 00:09:15.919 --> 00:09:20.240 Or to announce an important occasion. 00:09:20.240 --> 00:09:25.399 There were also instruments for sort of joyful community celebrations. 00:09:25.620 --> 00:09:27.099 Things like the lute and the harp. 00:09:27.219 --> 00:09:28.459 The tambourine and dancing. 00:09:28.579 --> 00:09:31.599 Those are sort of common elements of, you know, a block party. 00:09:31.839 --> 00:09:35.559 Or a sort of a community celebration. 00:09:35.559 --> 00:09:37.539 That was full of joy. 00:09:38.919 --> 00:09:43.500 As well as instruments that were used in more casual everyday life at home. 00:09:43.819 --> 00:09:45.899 The strings and the pipe or the flute. 00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:49.879 Those were instruments back then that were more common for people to have in their homes. 00:09:50.259 --> 00:09:55.219 Somebody would just be sort of strumming along late into the evening around a fire. 00:09:55.220 --> 00:09:57.060 You see, here's the point. 00:09:57.139 --> 00:10:00.160 The psalms are not just meant to be read aloud or recited. 00:10:00.620 --> 00:10:02.680 But sung and put to music. 00:10:03.340 --> 00:10:05.779 In a whole variety of settings. 00:10:06.740 --> psalm indicates that the praises of God are meant to be sung in a wide variety of musical styles. 00:10:29.179 --> 00:10:29.279 Right? 00:10:29.439 --> 00:10:30.979 Formal and informal. 00:10:31.679 00:10:42.219 So we shouldn't become overly attached to only one musical style. 00:10:42.359 --> 00:10:43.759 To the exclusion of all others. 00:10:43.759 --> 00:10:50.159 No, we can celebrate the wide That's what this psalm is saying in itself. 00:11:41.600 --> 00:11:43.340 But now I want to step back a little bit. 00:11:43.840 --> 00:11:49.240 And consider Psalm 150 as the conclusion to the book of Psalms. 00:11:49.240 --> 00:11:58.060 Now when we began this series, we pointed out that within the book of Psalms, there are actually five books. 00:11:58.600 --> 00:12:02.539 So if you open your Bible to the beginning of Psalms, it will say book one. 00:12:03.320 --> 00:12:07.799 And then if you go to Psalm 42, there will be a little note that says book two. 00:12:08.519 --> 00:12:12.019 If you go to Psalm 73, it will then say book three. 00:12:12.480 --> 00:12:13.019 And et cetera. 00:12:13.019 --> 00:12:19.699 So there are five collections of Psalms within what we have as the book of Psalms. 00:12:20.259 --> 00:12:28.779 And that's very similar to the first five books of the Bible, which were known and have been known for years as the five books of Moses. 00:12:28.960 --> 00:12:31.600 Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. 00:12:31.600 --> 00:12:38.600 And now we don't know exactly how or when these sort of five books of Psalms were collected. 00:12:38.740 variety of authors. 00:12:47.379 --> 00:12:54.740 We don't really know how or when it all happened, but we can know at least partly why that's the case. 00:12:55.679 --> 00:13:05.120 You see, just as the five books of Moses are sort of a complete collection of God's good instruction associated with the central figure of Moses, 00:13:05.840 --> 00:13:14.659 the five books of the Psalms are given to us as a complete collection of God's good instruction associated with the central figure of David. 00:13:14.659 --> 00:13:18.879 Particularly about how do we approach God in prayer. 00:13:22.279 --> 00:13:27.339 Now, over the last three months, we've looked at a wide variety of Psalms. 00:13:27.439 --> 00:13:32.500 Sort of we've gone through from the beginning to the end and sort of hit several of the highlights. 00:13:32.620 --> 00:13:37.039 So we've looked at Psalms of lament, which are crying out to God in the midst of distress. 00:13:37.459 --> 00:13:44.000 We've looked at Psalms of confession, crying out to God for forgiveness for our sin. 00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:46.539 Psalms of history, reflecting back on the past. 00:13:46.639 --> 00:13:49.139 Psalms of prophecy, looking forward to the future. 00:13:49.519 --> 00:13:53.980 Psalms of wisdom, reflecting on God's law and God's wisdom and God's ways. 00:13:54.379 --> 00:13:57.460 Psalms of trust, resting quietly in God's presence. 00:13:57.600 --> 00:13:58.360 And Psalms of worship. 00:13:59.940 --> 00:14:05.259 And we've seen that these Psalms are written out of all different kinds of life circumstances. 00:14:05.960 --> 00:14:09.919 And they help us to approach God starting from right where we are. 00:14:09.919 --> 00:14:20.399 Now, at first glance, and as we've gone through the Psalms, it can seem like the different kinds of Psalms are just sort of thrown together, all jumbled and all mixed together. 00:14:21.360 --> 00:14:21.740 Right? 00:14:21.799 --> 00:14:23.799 They're not neatly grouped together. 00:14:24.279 --> 00:14:29.000 You can't go to the Psalms and say, well, where are all the Psalms of trust? 00:14:29.500 --> 00:14:31.439 Well, they're sort of everywhere. 00:14:31.939 --> 00:14:32.240 Right? 00:14:32.339 --> 00:14:33.679 Where are all the Psalms of history? 00:14:33.819 --> 00:14:36.299 Well, they're sort of concentrated here, but they're also here. 00:14:36.299 --> 00:14:40.019 And, you know, that's sort of like how we experience life. 00:14:40.099 --> 00:14:40.299 Right? 00:14:40.819 --> 00:14:48.120 Life doesn't, we don't experience life in neatly divided categories that are completely separate from one another. 00:14:48.599 --> 00:14:48.859 Right? 00:14:48.919 --> 00:14:56.359 We don't have one day of lament and then one week of complete praise and one day where we really need to confess our sins. 00:14:56.419 --> 00:14:58.699 You know, all those things are mixed together in our lives. 00:14:58.700 --> 00:15:06.000 And so life is a jumbled mix of beauty and brokenness, joy and sorrow, spiritual triumph and spiritual defeat. 00:15:06.160 --> 00:15:09.800 But the Psalms help us to turn to God in the midst of all that we're experiencing. 00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:22.000 But we haven't, I don't think we've pointed this out yet, but when you look a little closer, there is actually an important progression within the book of Psalms. 00:15:22.000 --> 00:15:25.039 So they're not actually just jumbled and mixed all together. 00:15:25.620 --> 00:15:29.000 There's an important progression if you go from beginning to end. 00:15:30.340 --> 00:15:32.899 So let me give you some data for this. 00:15:33.860 --> 00:15:44.379 The lament Psalms, remember lament Psalms are crying out to God in the midst of distress and need, are concentrated heavily at the beginning of the book. 00:15:44.940 --> 00:15:48.100 So in book one, two-thirds of the Psalms are laments. 00:15:48.419 --> 00:15:50.360 In book two and three, it's at least half. 00:15:50.360 --> 00:15:58.360 But in book four and book five, the lament Psalms take a back seat and the praise Psalms come to the foreground. 00:15:58.879 --> 00:16:01.279 So the proportions get roughly flipped. harder and not easier, 00:23:38.559 --> 00:23:41.939 and our laments grow deeper and more earnest and broader. 00:23:43.939 --> 00:23:49.000 Sometimes Jesus leads us to come alongside others and sort of take their troubles as our own 00:23:49.000 --> 00:23:54.619 and lament with them and lament for them and bear with them. 00:23:54.619 --> 00:24:01.519 But the Psalms don't leave us in a cycle of intervened in a million other little ways throughout history, 00:26:32.119 --> 00:26:32.940 but above all, 00:26:33.799 --> 00:26:35.720 how God intervened by sending his Son. 00:26:38.440 --> 00:26:42.139 By sending his Son into the world to pay for our sins once and for all, 00:26:42.140 --> 00:26:45.860 and to rise triumphant over death and the grave. 00:26:46.740 --> 00:26:49.240 And
