00:02:04.060 as he looked back and reflected on all the many ways that the Lord had been with him and blessed him. 00:02:04.579 --> 00:02:07.439 If you know anything about Thomas Chisholm and his life, 00:02:07.480 --> 00:02:09.960 you would know that his life was not easy. 00:02:09.960 --> 00:02:12.900 He dealt with constant sickness. 00:02:13.320 --> 00:02:15.879 He dealt with great loss. 00:02:16.460 --> 00:02:21.340 He dealt with financial hardship and struggle as a result of his ongoing sickness. 00:02:21.600 --> 00:02:24.520 It put a great burden on him and his family. 00:02:25.159 00:03:20.360 This morning, as we look at our passage this morning, 00:03:20.479 --> 00:03:23.240 we come to the end of Jacob's life. 00:03:23.300 --> 00:03:27.199 And what we've seen over the past several weeks is that Jacob's life was not easy. 00:03:28.060 --> 00:03:30.379 Jacob suffered tremendous loss. 00:03:30.580 --> 00:03:32.319 Jacob has been tested. 00:03:32.319 --> 00:03:36.759 And yet, through it all, the Lord has been faithful to Jacob. 00:03:37.139 --> 00:03:39.680 And the Lord has blessed Jacob tremendously. 00:03:39.959 --> 00:03:43.219 And now we see in his old age, right before he dies, 00:03:43.400 --> 00:03:46.939 he passes that blessing on to his children. 00:03:47.819 --> 00:03:49.799 So here's the main idea for us this morning. 00:03:49.900 --> 00:03:52.680 I hope you've caught it already in the songs that we've sung 00:03:52.680 --> 00:03:53.840 and the prayers that we've prayed. 00:03:54.060 --> 00:03:56.079 This is all about the blessing of God. 00:03:56.080 --> 00:04:02.380 And the main idea for us this morning is that there is incredible blessing 00:04:02.380 --> 00:04:06.220 for those who are in covenant with our faithful God. 00:04:07.080 --> 00:04:13.720 There is incredible blessing for those who are in covenant with our faithful God. 00:04:13.780 --> 00:04:18.400 To say that another way, if you are in Christ, you are blessed. 00:04:19.939 --> 00:04:21.060 So let's take a look. 00:04:21.120 --> 00:04:24.540 And this morning, we'll see three ways God blesses his people. 00:04:24.540 --> 00:04:26.100 This is going to be our now towards the end of his life, 00:04:53.579 --> 00:04:57.199 after this, Joseph was told, behold, your father is ill. 00:04:57.399 --> 00:05:01.000 So he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. 00:05:01.500 --> 00:05:04.740 And it was told to Jacob, your son Joseph has come to you. 00:05:05.300 --> 00:05:08.560 Then Israel summoned his strength and sat up in bed. 00:05:08.620 --> 00:05:12.819 I've heard it said before that last words are meant to be lasting words. 00:05:14.039 --> 00:05:16.919 You think about what you might want to share with your own family members, want to think carefully and share what's most important to you, 00:05:26.719 --> 00:05:28.339 what's most important for them to hear. 00:05:29.099 --> 00:05:31.959 Well, Jacob, in his last moments, here at the end of his life, 00:05:32.060 --> 00:05:36.139 he shares about the most significant moment of his life. 00:05:36.219 --> 00:05:40.680 He shares about how God has met with him and spoken with him. 00:05:40.680 --> 00:05:43.480 Verse 3, Jacob said to Joseph, 00:05:43.900 --> 00:05:47.959 God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me. 00:05:48.680 --> 00:05:52.660 And he said to me, behold, I will make you fruitful and multiply you, 00:05:52.819 --> 00:05:54.800 and I will make you a company of peoples, 00:05:55.340 --> 00:06:00.240 and will give this land to your offspring after you for an everlasting possession. 00:06:00.519 --> 00:06:02.420 He says, God appeared to me. 00:06:03.540 --> 00:06:05.259 I need to share this with you, Joseph. 00:06:05.259 --> 00:06:10.560 God appeared to me, and God spoke with me, and God blessed me, 00:06:10.899 --> 00:06:16.539 and God made promises to me just like he did with my father Isaac and with his father Abraham. 00:06:16.779 --> 00:06:20.399 But now I need you to understand I'm coming to the end of my life. 00:06:20.620 --> 00:06:24.719 And now, son, it's time for me to pass that blessing on to the next generation. 00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:29.899 Now, all of this, up to this point, all of this makes a lot of sense, doesn't it? 00:06:30.740 --> 00:06:33.599 But then he does something surprising. 00:06:33.600 --> 00:06:34.620 Look there to verse 5. 00:06:35.740 --> 00:06:36.320 He says, 00:06:36.439 --> 00:06:44.140 And now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine. 00:06:45.360 --> 00:06:48.720 Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine, as Reuben and Simeon are. 00:06:49.300 --> 00:06:51.960 And the children that you fathered after them shall be yours. 00:06:52.640 --> 00:06:55.480 They shall be called by the name of their brothers and their inheritance. 00:06:56.540 --> 00:06:59.140 As for me, when I came from Paddan to my sorrow, 00:06:59.400 --> 00:07:01.439 Rachel died in the land of Canaan on the way. 00:07:01.439 --> 00:07:04.120 And when there was still some distance to go to Ephraim. 00:07:04.360 --> 00:07:06.500 And I buried her there on the way to Ephraim. 00:07:06.600 --> 00:07:08.560 That is in Bethlehem. 00:07:08.620 --> 00:07:09.779 Did you catch what just happened? 00:07:11.560 --> 00:07:17.279 Jacob formally adopts Ephraim and Manasseh as his own children. 00:07:17.279 --> 00:07:23.539 And he gives them the status of his two oldest sons, Reuben and Simeon. 00:07:24.339 --> 00:07:26.559 Jacob claims them as his own. 00:07:26.679 --> 00:07:31.979 And so now these two children of Joseph, who were born to an Egyptian mother, born in Egypt, 00:07:32.199 --> 00:07:38.919 they're now being formally brought in to the blessings of the covenant that God made with Jacob. 00:07:39.779 --> 00:07:41.719 And we see it play out here in verse 8. 00:07:41.720 --> 00:07:45.280 When Israel saw Joseph's sons, he said, Who are these? 00:07:45.920 --> 00:07:50.260 Joseph said to his father, They are my sons whom God has given me here in Egypt. 00:07:50.740 --> 00:07:53.600 And he said, Bring them to me, please, that I may bless them. 00:07:54.560 --> 00:07:58.080 Now the eyes of Israel were dim with age so that he could not see. 00:07:58.280 --> 00:08:02.960 So Joseph brought them near to him and he kissed them and embraced them. 00:08:03.020 --> 00:08:06.520 And Israel said to Joseph, I never expected to see your face. 00:08:06.560 --> 00:08:09.660 And behold, God has let me see your offspring also. 00:08:09.660 --> 00:08:15.680 And then Joseph removed them from his knees and he bowed himself with his face to the earth. 00:08:15.880 --> 00:08:18.860 See, Joseph realizes the magnitude of this moment. 00:08:19.840 --> 00:08:25.540 Putting these two children on the knees of Israel is a sort of formal adoption ritual. 00:08:26.240 --> 00:08:28.580 And he knows that the blessing is coming. 00:08:29.040 --> 00:08:32.279 He knows that this moment of imparting the blessing is near. 00:08:32.600 --> 00:08:33.800 And so what does Joseph do? 00:08:33.940 --> 00:08:37.540 He sets them up in the way that makes the most sense to him. 00:08:37.539 --> 00:08:42.879 He puts the oldest towards Jacob's right hand and the youngest towards his left hand. 00:08:43.039 --> 00:08:47.980 Because the right hand would ordinarily go with the older as the sign of the greater blessing. 00:08:48.699 --> 00:08:49.779 But look what happens. 00:08:49.860 --> 00:08:50.419 Verse 14. 00:08:51.759 --> 00:08:59.000 Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephraim, who was the younger. 00:08:59.000 --> 00:09:05.279 And he takes his left hand on the head of Manasseh, crossing his hands. 00:09:05.379 --> 00:09:07.100 For Manasseh was the firstborn. 00:09:07.720 --> 00:09:09.299 And he blessed Joseph. 00:09:09.500 --> 00:09:12.440 He really is blessing him through this blessing of his two children. 00:09:12.980 --> 00:09:13.519 And he said, 00:09:13.519 --> 00:09:43.500 Ephraim and Manasseh said, 00:09:43.519 --> 00:09:45.279 This is an incredible grace. 00:09:46.679 --> 00:09:50.059 But Joseph is confused by all of this. 00:09:51.120 --> 00:09:52.120 Verse 17 says, 00:09:52.240 --> 00:09:57.439 When Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him. 00:09:57.519 --> 00:10:02.500 And he took his father's hand to move it from Ephraim's head over to Manasseh's head. 00:10:02.539 --> 00:10:04.559 He thinks that this is all a big mistake. 00:10:05.500 --> 00:10:07.579 I mean, maybe it's because his father is going blind. 00:10:07.580 --> 00:10:11.860 And maybe it's just because it's a slip up of old age. 00:10:12.660 --> 00:10:14.200 So Joseph said to his father, 00:10:14.300 --> 00:10:15.400 It's not this way, father. 00:10:15.680 --> 00:10:17.040 This one's the firstborn. 00:10:17.120 --> 00:10:19.080 Put your right hand on his head. 00:10:19.540 --> 00:10:21.360 But his father refused and said, 00:10:21.460 --> 00:10:22.680 I know, my son. 00:10:23.220 --> 00:10:23.900 I know. 00:10:24.900 --> 00:10:26.120 This is no accident. 00:10:26.120 --> 00:10:26.720 Accident. 00:10:27.019 --> 00:10:29.399 This is entirely intentional. 00:10:30.659 --> 00:10:30.980 He says, 00:10:31.080 --> 00:10:32.500 He also shall become a people, 00:10:32.700 --> 00:10:34.480 and he also shall be great. 00:10:34.679 --> 00:10:38.440 Nevertheless, his younger brother shall be greater than he, 00:10:38.600 --> 00:10:41.940 and his offspring shall become a multitude of nations. 00:10:41.940 --> 00:10:44.780 So he blessed them that day, saying, 00:10:45.120 --> 00:10:47.180 By you Israel will pronounce blessings, 00:10:47.340 --> 00:10:47.620 saying, 00:10:48.040 --> 00:10:50.880 God make you as Ephraim and Manasseh. 00:10:51.620 --> 00:10:54.600 Thus he put Ephraim before Manasseh. 00:10:55.320 --> 00:10:56.520 And then Israel said to Joseph, 00:10:56.660 --> 00:10:58.340 Behold, I am about to die. 00:10:58.900 --> 00:11:00.420 But God will be with still not done playing favorites, is he? 00:11:15.460 --> 00:11:18.340 Do you see how God blesses in surprising ways? 00:11:20.480 --> 00:11:24.820 Did you notice the surprising ways in which God blesses here? 00:11:24.899 --> 00:11:28.100 I see three here that I want to draw your attention to here 00:11:28.100 --> 00:11:29.779 before we move on to the next point. 00:11:30.160 --> 00:11:33.120 Three surprising ways that I see God blessing here. 00:11:33.300 --> 00:11:34.660 And I want you to see these, 00:11:34.860 --> 00:11:38.620 because you should know God still blesses in these three ways. 00:11:38.620 --> 00:11:41.659 In fact, if you are in Christ, 00:11:42.039 --> 00:11:44.659 then he has blessed you in these three ways. 00:11:45.440 --> 00:11:48.620 For one, we see God blesses through adoption. 00:11:50.320 --> 00:11:53.480 Ephraim and Manasseh were not Jacob's kids, 00:11:53.580 --> 00:11:55.179 but now they are. 00:11:55.299 --> 00:11:55.560 Why? 00:11:55.679 --> 00:11:57.580 He has adopted them as his own. 00:11:58.419 --> 00:12:00.879 They once had no claim to the blessing, 00:12:00.879 --> 00:12:04.439 but now they have full claim to the blessing. 00:12:04.439 --> 00:12:06.799 They once had no share in the inheritance, 00:12:07.080 --> 00:12:10.419 but now they have a full share in the inheritance. 00:12:10.740 --> 00:12:11.960 Do you realize, Christian, 00:12:12.500 --> 00:12:14.860 the same has happened with you in Christ. 00:12:16.320 --> 00:12:17.899 You were strangers, 00:12:18.500 --> 00:12:20.299 and you were aliens. 00:12:20.960 --> 00:12:23.879 You had no claim to the blessings of God, 00:12:23.879 --> 00:12:26.399 but God by his grace. 00:12:26.519 --> 00:12:27.879 What he's done for you in Christ 00:12:27.879 --> 00:12:30.559 is he has taken you from being an outsider, 00:12:30.559 --> 00:12:33.460 and he has adopted you into his own family 00:12:33.460 --> 00:12:35.279 as sons and daughters of the living God. 00:12:35.980 --> 00:12:37.860 That's what it means to be a Christian. 00:12:39.340 --> 00:12:40.700 The Apostle John says, 00:12:41.179 --> 00:12:44.200 see what kind of love the Father has given to us 00:12:44.200 --> 00:12:46.500 that we should be called children of God. 00:12:47.299 --> 00:12:48.139 And so we are. 00:12:48.240 --> 00:12:49.460 Are you surprised by this? 00:12:49.460 --> 00:12:53.940 Another surprising way we see God blessing here, 00:12:54.000 --> 00:12:56.440 we see that God blesses through election. 00:12:57.519 --> 00:12:59.259 God blesses through election. 00:12:59.460 --> 00:13:02.019 We keep seeing this over and over and over again 00:13:02.019 --> 00:13:02.940 in Genesis, don't we? 00:13:03.720 --> 00:13:06.560 God chose before they were even born 00:13:06.560 --> 00:13:09.019 to put Jacob before Esau. 00:13:09.759 --> 00:13:12.900 God chose to make promises to Abraham, 00:13:12.900 --> 00:13:15.860 this pagan man out of all the men of the earth. 00:13:16.180 --> 00:13:17.620 God elected Abraham. 00:13:17.620 --> 00:13:20.139 He chose to make promises to Abraham. 00:13:20.659 --> 00:13:21.919 And so now, yet again, 00:13:22.279 --> 00:13:24.659 God chooses Ephraim 00:13:24.659 --> 00:13:28.539 to receive the place of preeminence over Manasseh. 00:13:28.639 --> 00:13:29.480 This is election. 00:13:30.460 --> 00:13:31.279 God chooses. 00:13:32.399 --> 00:13:34.779 And Christian, if you are in Christ, 00:13:35.179 --> 00:13:39.360 it is because God chose to bless you in him 00:13:39.360 --> 00:13:41.299 from before the foundations of the world. 00:13:41.500 --> 00:13:42.240 This is election. 00:13:43.820 --> 00:13:46.000 Ephesians 1 tells us, 00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:50.379 In love, he predestined us for adoption as chosen you? 00:13:59.320 --> 00:14:00.360 You should be. 00:14:02.039 --> 00:14:04.460 We're not the obvious choice. 00:14:04.460 --> 00:14:08.379 But that's because one final way, 00:14:08.500 --> 00:14:11.780 one final and third surprising way that God blesses here, 00:14:11.879 --> 00:14:15.120 God blesses according to his wisdom. 00:14:15.960 --> 00:14:18.120 According to his wisdom, 00:14:18.300 --> 00:14:22.320 which is almost always contrary to the wisdom of this world. 00:14:23.940 --> 00:14:26.759 And we should really stop expecting God to work 00:14:26.759 --> 00:14:28.600 according to our ways, shouldn't we? 00:14:28.600 --> 00:14:33.300 He loves to run contrary to our expectations. 00:14:33.300 --> 00:14:33.659 Why? 00:14:34.159 --> 00:14:35.879 Because in so doing, 00:14:45.440 Where do we see this most clearly? 00:14:45.540 --> 00:14:47.379 Beyond the cross of Christ. 00:14:47.379 --> 00:14:52.299 Who would expect that the greatest blessing to the world 00:14:52.299 --> 00:14:54.759 would come through the death of the Son of God? 00:14:56.600 --> 00:15:01.200 Who would expect that in this moment of apparent victory for sin 00:15:01.200 --> 00:15:02.720 and victory for the grave 00:15:02.720 --> 00:15:05.019 and victory for the devil himself, 00:15:05.259 --> 00:15:09.080 that that exact moment would be the moment of their undoing? 00:15:10.279 --> 00:15:14.240 Who would ever expect that he would become sin for us 00:15:14.240 --> 00:15:17.840 so that in him we would become the righteousness of God? 00:15:18.000 --> 00:15:19.539 This is not man's wisdom. 00:15:21.379 --> 00:15:24.100 The word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, 00:15:24.240 --> 00:15:25.899 but to us who are being saved, 00:15:26.000 --> 00:15:28.460 it is the power of God. 00:15:28.600 --> 00:15:29.659 And so we see, first, 00:15:29.779 --> 00:15:31.600 God blesses in surprising ways. 00:15:31.720 --> 00:15:32.440 Not only this, ways. 00:15:41.299 --> 00:15:42.320 Look there to chapter 49. 00:15:42.320 --> 00:15:45.879 Now, chapter 49 is incredible. 00:15:46.860 --> 00:15:49.200 And it shows us all of these blessings 00:15:49.200 --> 00:15:51.560 that Jacob gives to his children. 00:15:51.760 --> 00:15:53.220 And in each one, 00:15:53.260 --> 00:15:54.080 in each one of these, 00:15:54.140 --> 00:15:55.700 these blessings are prophetic. 00:15:56.560 --> 00:15:59.480 And they speak of future blessings 00:15:59.480 --> 00:16:01.100 that will come on these children 00:16:01.100 --> 00:16:03.680 that we can look back in history 00:16:03.680 --> 00:16:07.260 and see that these have all come true in time. 00:16:07.259 --> 00:16:10.819 And just like with all the other biblical prophecies, 00:16:11.000 --> 00:16:13.639 skeptics of the Bible will look at this and say, 00:16:13.799 --> 00:16:16.519 this is all too realistic sounding, right? 00:16:17.039 --> 00:16:19.980 This describes things a little bit too well, 00:16:20.080 --> 00:16:20.919 and so therefore, 00:16:21.200 --> 00:16:24.259 it must have been some later addition, right? 00:16:24.319 --> 00:16:27.399 Somebody years later must have just come back in 00:16:27.399 --> 00:16:29.559 and seen how all these tribes developed, 00:16:29.779 --> 00:16:31.039 and then they went back 00:16:31.039 --> 00:16:32.500 and they added in this little bit 00:16:32.500 --> 00:16:34.879 to explain the history of these tribes. 00:16:34.879 --> 00:16:36.379 That's the only explanation, right? 00:16:36.620 --> 00:16:38.919 That's one possibility, I guess, 00:16:39.360 --> 00:16:41.419 outside of there being no evidence whatsoever 00:16:41.419 --> 00:16:43.019 of that sort of thing happening here. 00:16:43.799 --> 00:16:45.659 May I present
