questions, they had expectations and he didn't exactly match their 00:00:44.039 --> 00:00:46.920 expectations and so therefore they had questions. 00:00:48.620 --> 00:00:53.100 They had a list of questions, they were just trying to figure out how to ask them. 00:00:53.100 --> 00:01:01.780 And all of that culminates with his arrest in the garden and the midnight and the all-night 00:01:01.780 --> 00:01:03.900 trial that took place afterwards. 00:01:05.320 --> 00:01:07.019 And I'll just tell you, it's a mess. 00:01:07.500 --> 00:01:09.060 It was an absolute mess. 00:01:10.260 --> 00:01:17.240 They were rushing it because there couldn't be anybody hanging on a cross at 6 p.m. on Friday, 00:01:17.239 --> 00:01:18.739 that's when Passover starts. 00:01:19.899 --> 00:01:21.219 So we had to get this done. 00:01:22.599 --> 00:01:26.539 And so they work all night to try to get improperly accused. 00:01:27.799 --> 00:01:34.359 And no, not one account of the gospel has the whole trial of Jesus. 00:01:56.719 --> 00:02:01.379 Because the established church leaders, the chief priests and the Sanhedrin, 00:02:01.900 --> 00:02:04.280 had looked for a way to pin him. 00:02:04.280 --> 00:02:11.319 He had, they felt like that he had blasphemed God. 00:02:11.420 --> 00:02:12.979 And so they wanted to go after that. 00:02:13.080 --> 00:02:16.420 But they knew they needed Roman authority to do what they wanted to do to him. 00:02:16.639 --> 00:02:20.319 And somehow they had to impress the Roman authorities that he had done something to them. 00:02:20.379 --> 00:02:22.379 And so therefore, they tried treason. 00:02:23.620 --> 00:02:25.560 Because maybe he had spoken against Caesar. 00:02:26.439 --> 00:02:33.080 So after the Pharisees had finally had Jesus abducted without having to fight a fleet of his flock. 00:02:33.080 --> 00:02:37.280 And that's why they waited until that midnight arrest in the midst of the garden. 00:02:37.280 --> 00:02:42.460 Because they knew that he would have, they'd have a fight on their hands with his followers and those type things. 00:02:43.820 --> 00:02:46.180 They took him to a man named Annas. 00:02:47.400 --> 00:02:53.460 Annas was the old political boss of Jerusalem among the church folk. 00:02:54.340 --> 00:02:57.160 He's kind of like the church godfather of sorts. 00:02:57.600 --> 00:02:59.360 Now y'all don't know what I'm talking about when I say that. 00:02:59.420 --> 00:03:00.700 So I'll explain. 00:03:00.699 --> 00:03:04.659 He had been high priest for 20 years earlier. 00:03:05.979 --> 00:03:09.319 Since that time, four of his sons had held that same position. 00:03:09.579 --> 00:03:13.199 And now his son-in-law, poor thing, was now holding the position. 00:03:15.079 --> 00:03:23.939 He is, it is understood that Annas had been pulling the strings of the puppet high priest for decades. 00:03:23.939 --> 00:03:31.060 Before the Roman Empire came into power, a high priest would serve for a long time. 00:03:31.840 --> 00:03:40.020 But after the Romans took over that area, the high priest position became one that was much more volatile. 00:03:41.219 --> 00:03:43.419 And it really went to the highest bidder. 00:03:43.419 --> 00:03:48.099 And Annas was very rich. 00:03:49.539 --> 00:03:52.500 He was rich enough to let his family control the priesthood. 00:03:53.299 --> 00:03:56.279 And that's what he had done since he had given it up. 00:03:57.399 --> 00:04:03.639 But now, they come to him. 00:04:03.879 --> 00:04:07.039 Not because he holds office, but because he holds power. 00:04:07.039 --> 00:04:12.519 And they bring him to Annas. 00:04:12.599 --> 00:04:14.099 And Annas didn't like Jesus. 00:04:15.659 --> 00:04:17.680 But it wasn't because of why they brought him. 00:04:17.819 --> 00:04:21.519 He didn't like Jesus because Jesus had turned the tables in the temple. 00:04:22.379 --> 00:04:24.639 And when he turned the tables in the temple, 00:04:25.319 --> 00:04:30.319 he messed up the commerce that went along with temple practices. 00:04:30.319 --> 00:04:35.159 And the old political boss had his tentacles in that. 00:04:35.980 --> 00:04:37.199 He had his hands in that. 00:04:37.259 --> 00:04:39.319 He had to affect him economically. 00:04:39.759 --> 00:04:41.459 And because of that, he didn't like Jesus. 00:04:41.920 --> 00:04:47.240 And so, Annas asked him two questions. 00:04:47.379 --> 00:04:48.860 One, he asked him about his disciples. 00:04:49.120 --> 00:04:50.539 And the other, he asked him about his teaching. 00:04:50.740 --> 00:04:56.519 And Jesus responded to him recognizing the foolishness of the questions that he asked. 00:04:56.519 --> 00:05:01.240 John records it in John chapter 18, verse 20 and 21. 00:05:01.399 --> 00:05:01.959 And he says this, 00:05:02.279 --> 00:05:04.719 Jesus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world. 00:05:04.859 --> 00:05:08.079 I've always taught in synagogues and in the temple where all the Jews came together. 00:05:08.240 --> 00:05:09.439 I've said nothing in secret. 00:05:09.659 --> 00:05:10.959 Well, why do you ask me? 00:05:12.180 --> 00:05:14.319 Ask those who've heard me what I had to say. 00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:16.199 They know what I said. 00:05:17.399 --> 00:05:20.639 So, Jesus had spoken openly, especially in the last days. 00:05:20.639 --> 00:05:35.399 And what he had said, what he hadn't said openly earlier in his ministry was just mainly to have time to train up the disciples to start and found the church like we see in the book of Acts. 00:05:36.579 --> 00:05:40.240 So, he had held off some things, but not in the latter days. 00:05:40.399 --> 00:05:43.319 No, he had shared all of those things very openly. 00:05:43.479 --> 00:05:44.639 And now the time had come. 00:05:44.719 --> 00:05:45.599 He knew what was coming. 00:05:45.819 --> 00:05:46.879 He had nothing to hide. 00:05:47.000 --> 00:05:48.300 And he told folks that. 00:05:48.300 --> 00:05:51.800 So, Annas sent him to Caiaphas. 00:05:51.939 --> 00:05:53.759 Caiaphas was the high priest. 00:05:53.879 --> 00:05:56.040 And he was also Annas' son-in-law. 00:05:56.879 --> 00:06:00.120 And the heresy committee of the Sanhedrin was there as well. 00:06:01.560 --> 00:06:05.199 Their witness, Judas, was not there. 00:06:06.420 --> 00:06:07.759 He was not to be found. 00:06:07.900 --> 00:06:09.600 So, they had to find others. 00:06:09.780 --> 00:06:12.879 And the first witness that came gave a false account. 00:06:13.560 --> 00:06:14.620 Mark records that. 00:06:14.699 --> 00:06:16.900 Mark 14, 58 and 59. 00:06:16.900 --> 00:06:17.620 It says this, 00:06:17.620 --> 00:06:20.819 We heard him say, I'll destroy this temple that's made with hands. 00:06:20.980 --> 00:06:22.600 And in three days, I'll build another. 00:06:23.180 --> 00:06:24.259 Not made with hands. 00:06:25.139 --> 00:06:29.120 Yet, even about this, their testimony did not agree. 00:06:29.459 --> 00:06:31.199 You see, it took two witnesses. 00:06:33.579 --> 00:06:36.560 Two witnesses were necessary for a charge to hold. 00:06:36.660 --> 00:06:37.920 And they didn't have two witnesses. 00:06:38.220 --> 00:06:39.660 So, Jesus needed no defense. 00:06:39.819 --> 00:06:41.420 So, he just stood there in silence. 00:06:41.420 --> 00:06:49.120 They had hoped to get him for possibly a terrorism threat of sorts. 00:06:49.120 --> 00:06:55.199 And in reality, when Jesus said in John 2, 19, destroy this temple and I'll rebuild it in three days. 00:06:55.319 --> 00:06:56.639 He wasn't talking about him destroying it. 00:06:56.720 --> 00:06:57.699 He was talking about his body. 00:06:58.800 --> 00:07:00.120 Tear me down if you want to. 00:07:00.220 --> 00:07:01.500 But I'll rebuild it in three days. 00:07:01.540 --> 00:07:02.899 In other words, I'll arise in three days. 00:07:02.899 --> 00:07:05.939 It was a prophecy they didn't pick up on. 00:07:07.219 --> 00:07:10.279 They had then hoped to get him for Sabbath violations. 00:07:11.560 --> 00:07:15.339 And they had haunted him for months with that. 00:07:15.439 --> 00:07:17.439 But yet, they didn't have witnesses for that either. 00:07:18.120 --> 00:07:21.379 The rebuilding of the temple complaint was also too flimsy. 00:07:22.419 --> 00:07:27.139 In response, Caiaphas finally commanded Christ to tell him if he was the Christ. 00:07:27.319 --> 00:07:29.399 And I want you to notice what his responses were. 00:07:29.399 --> 00:07:35.379 Matthew records it in Matthew chapter 26, 63 through 64. 00:07:36.279 --> 00:07:40.919 It says, but Jesus remained silent and the high priest said to him, I adhere to you by the living God. 00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:43.560 Tell us if you're the Christ, the Son of God. 00:07:43.839 --> 00:07:46.000 And Jesus said to him, you've said so. 00:07:46.879 --> 00:07:53.099 But I tell you, from now on you'll see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven. 00:07:53.219 --> 00:07:54.379 Well, that didn't go over well. 00:07:54.519 --> 00:07:56.859 Caiaphas overreacts to that statement. 00:07:56.860 --> 00:07:58.819 He needed no more witnesses. 00:07:59.139 --> 00:08:01.420 And in response to that, they arrest him. 00:08:01.580 --> 00:08:02.860 They beat him. 00:08:03.160 --> 00:08:04.280 They mock him. 00:08:04.460 --> 00:08:07.400 And then they jail him for a few hours. 00:08:08.680 --> 00:08:13.720 And about the time the sun comes up, early in the morning, he went before the Sanhedrin. 00:08:15.120 --> 00:08:19.460 We get to our passage in Luke chapter 22, beginning in verse 66. 00:08:19.459 --> 00:08:29.180 And it says this, when day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together both chief priests and scribes. 00:08:29.299 --> 00:08:31.359 And they led him away to their council. 00:08:31.359 --> 00:08:33.419 And they said, if you are the Christ, tell us. 00:08:33.659 --> 00:08:36.059 But he said, if I tell you, you will not believe. 00:08:36.240 --> 00:08:39.240 And if I ask you, you will not answer. 00:08:39.500 --> 00:08:43.439 But from now on, the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God. 00:08:43.440 --> 00:08:45.900 So they all said, are you the Son of God then? 00:08:45.940 --> 00:08:47.680 And he said, you say that I am. 00:08:47.900 whole company of them arose and brought him before Pilate. 00:09:47.320 --> 00:09:50.700 And they began to accuse him, saying, we found this man misleading our nation 00:09:50.700 --> 00:09:52.880 and forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar. 00:09:53.420 --> 00:09:55.340 And saying that he himself is Christ the king. 00:09:55.340 --> 00:09:58.100 And Pilate asked him, are you the king of the Jews? 00:09:58.280 --> 00:10:00.560 And he answered them, you've said so. 00:10:01.519 --> 00:10:06.600 Then Pilate said to the chief priests in the crowds, I find no guilt in this man. 00:10:07.139 --> Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 00:10:21.179 --> 00:10:26.639 And when he learned that he belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, 00:10:26.840 --> 00:10:31.379 who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. 00:10:31.379 --> 00:10:35.799 Now, I want you to understand, they arrested him about midnight. 00:10:36.539 --> 00:10:39.120 He was hanging on they used a loophole of jurisdiction to move Jesus on to Herod. 00:10:53.820 --> 00:10:59.480 Luke continues to say, when Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, 00:10:59.879 --> 00:11:03.840 for he had long desired to see him because he had heard about him. 00:11:04.520 --> 00:11:09.640 And he was hoping to see some sign done by him, so he questioned him at some length, 00:11:10.040 --> 00:11:11.920 but he made no answer. 00:11:11.919 --> 00:11:24.000 The chief priest and the scribe stood by, vehemently accusing him. 00:11:24.559 --> 00:11:27.379 And Herod, with his soldiers, treated him with content and mocked him. 00:11:28.139 --> 00:11:31.979 Then arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate. 00:11:32.879 --> 00:11:35.639 Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day. 00:11:36.199 --> 00:11:39.879 Before this, they had been in enmity with each other. 00:11:39.879 --> 00:11:45.279 Herod was a vulgar and coarse person. 00:11:46.740 --> 00:11:49.860 He's the same Herod that imprisoned John the Baptist, 00:11:50.200 --> 00:11:52.840 and due to the commands of his own wife, 00:11:54.200 --> 00:11:59.259 because John had prophetically spoken against their adulterous relationship, 00:12:01.080 --> 00:12:06.659 when Herod's stepdaughter did a lustful dance at a gathering among his friends, 00:12:06.659 --> 00:12:11.419 he told his stepdaughter he'd give her everything, anything that she wanted, 00:12:11.480 --> 00:12:15.939 up to half of his kingdom, which is just a drunken embellishment, quite honestly. 00:12:17.579 --> 00:12:20.039 But what she asked for was John the Baptist's head, 00:12:20.600 --> 00:12:26.059 on her mother's behalf, because he had talked about her mother's adultery. 00:12:26.059 --> 00:12:34.519 And because she asked for it in front of a drunken Herod in front of all his friends, 00:12:34.599 --> 00:12:36.899 he had to impress him, and so he did just that. 00:12:37.799 --> 00:12:41.959 He decapitated John and brought his head into the gathering. 00:12:42.279 --> 00:12:42.759 It was a setup. 00:12:44.339 --> 00:12:48.079 Same man that Jesus now stands before, and he's amazed at Jesus, 00:12:48.239 --> meet Christ, he mocked him and made a decision. 00:12:55.659 --> 00:12:57.840 And it made no decision, but sent him back to Pilate. 00:12:57.919 --> 00:13:00.799 Now remember, Pilate wants everybody happy, including Herod. 00:13:00.860 --> 00:13:04.759 So once back to Pilate, Pilate tried to blame the decision on other people. 00:13:06.679 --> 00:13:09.439 Washing his hands of the innocent blood want you to ask yourself. 00:16:32.899 --> 00:16:38.419 Number one, do I blame others for my decisions? 00:16:41.500 --> 00:16:45.019 Pilate tried to act like he had made the decision, but he hadn't. 00:16:45.019 --> 00:16:47.159 And that's not new. 00:16:48.259 --> 00:16:55.079 In the garden, where it all first began, Adam blamed his sin on Eve and Eve blamed the snake. 00:16:55.340 --> 00:17:00.120 And ever since then, we've been blaming other people for the sin in our life. 00:17:00.720 --> 00:17:03.840 We blame our decisions, our lack of decision on something. 00:17:08.160 --> 00:17:10.139 Maybe something that we don't like in the church. 00:17:10.200 --> 00:17:12.259 Or maybe somebody we don't like in the church. 00:17:12.619 --> 00:17:14.420 There's hypocrites down there, you know. 00:17:15.019 --> 00:17:17.019 Maybe we blame it on our parents. 00:17:17.200 --> 00:17:19.160 Or maybe we blame it on our background. 00:17:20.680 --> 00:17:27.180 We blame our lack of decision for Christ on some matter, sometimes, for some reason. 00:17:27.660 --> 00:17:30.839 But the reality is, Hebrews chapter 9 verse 27 says, 00:17:31.160 --> 00:17:34.799 It is appointed for man to die once and after that comes the judgment. 00:17:35.359 --> 00:17:38.220 Nobody's going to answer for your life except you. 00:17:39.400 --> 00:17:39.920 You. 00:17:39.920 --> 00:17:44.100 No one will be judged for your actions but you. 00:17:45.880 --> 00:17:54.380 And thank God if we confess our sins, he's faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us from all 00:18:48.639 We've talked about pompous church leaders that have watched Jesus from a distance, never accepting him, just criticizing him. 00:18:48.640 --> 00:18:56.600 And that's exactly what the person without Christ does when they see the love of God, when they hear of the love of God, and reject that. 00:18:56.680 --> 00:19:02.580 That's what the Christian does when we are mere spectators
