weighed about 100 pounds, we couldn't just put this dollhouse together before Christmas and then hide it. 00:03:19.719 --> 00:03:22.379 I mean, where are you going to hide a dollhouse that's this tall 00:06:30.899 --> 00:06:35.480 This morning, we are going to be looking at the Book of Romans. 00:06:35.480 --> 00:06:39.100 And the Book of Romans is much like a large instruction manual. 00:06:39.220 --> 00:06:43.600 It is one of the most systematic of Paul's letters. 00:06:44.259 --> 00:06:49.020 It reads almost like a theology textbook, if you will. 00:06:49.759 --> 00:06:53.340 Now, the Book of Romans was written by the Apostle Paul. 00:06:53.500 --> 00:06:55.439 He wrote it to the church at Rome. 00:06:55.520 --> 00:06:57.140 And I know that sounds very obvious. 00:06:57.259 --> 00:06:58.280 I mean, the book is called Romans. 00:06:58.279 --> 00:07:06.500 But it's important as we work our way through these 17 verses that we understand that Paul's audience here are Christians. 00:07:07.199 --> 00:07:08.839 He's writing to the church. 00:07:09.419 --> 00:07:10.759 They know Christ. 00:07:11.439 --> 00:07:13.939 And so he's writing to them, to the church in Rome. 00:07:14.039 --> 00:07:21.439 Also, during this time in history, if you know anything about secular history, the whole Mediterranean world was under what was called the Roman Empire. 00:07:22.099 --> 00:07:23.879 They were under the thumb of the Roman Empire. 00:07:23.879 --> 00:07:28.579 And obviously, the capital of the Roman Empire was none other than Rome. 00:07:28.680 --> 00:07:38.100 And so I want you this morning to kind of view the Roman Empire, to view Rome itself as a Washington, D.C. 00:07:38.819 --> 00:07:40.719 Because that's essentially what it was. 00:07:41.480 --> 00:07:41.659 Right? 00:07:42.560 --> 00:07:49.699 Every single vice known to mankind could be found in Rome. 00:07:49.699 --> 00:07:57.500 Alcohol, drugs, sexual promiscuity, you name it, it was there. 00:07:58.120 --> 00:08:01.759 Rome was religiously diverse, culturally diverse. 00:08:02.620 --> 00:08:06.980 It was a melting pot, much like Washington, D.C. is today. 00:08:08.560 --> 00:08:13.939 And so Paul is writing to this church, and it's important for us to understand the culture. 00:08:14.819 --> 00:08:18.360 One secular historian wrote this about Rome. 00:08:18.360 --> 00:08:25.300 He said, quote, Rome was a severely overcrowded, loud, and smelly city. 00:08:25.900 --> 00:08:30.240 A place that provided every virtue and vice known to mankind. 00:08:31.360 --> 00:08:33.860 The church at Rome came out of this environment. 00:08:34.080 --> 00:08:39.800 The people that made up the church in Rome came out of this environment. 00:08:39.799 --> 00:08:44.319 And since they came out of this environment, naturally, there were questions. 00:08:45.259 --> 00:08:48.639 And one of those questions is, what is the gospel? 00:08:49.139 --> 00:08:53.939 And so this morning, what we're going to do is we're going to look at these 17 verses, 00:08:54.439 --> 00:09:00.379 and we are going to pull out of it three insights into what the gospel truly is. 00:09:00.379 --> 00:09:06.559 Number one, the gospel was promised in the Old Testament. 00:09:06.720 --> 00:09:08.799 The gospel was promised in the Old Testament. 00:09:08.899 --> 00:09:11.519 Look what Paul says here, verses 1 through 7. 00:09:11.860 --> 00:09:12.320 He says, 00:09:12.320 --> 00:09:24.540 Pete says, 00:09:24.539 --> 00:09:35.319 He was descended from David according to the flesh, and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by His resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 00:09:35.639 --> 00:09:44.679 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of His name among the nations, 00:09:45.319 --> 00:09:48.699 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. 00:09:48.700 --> 00:09:58.080 To all of those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints, grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:09:58.300 --> 00:10:03.320 Now we could literally take the next three weeks and go over these seven verses, 00:10:03.660 --> 00:10:09.600 but for the sake of time, we're going to look primarily at verse 2 because that's what we're concerned with. 00:10:10.060 --> 00:10:14.540 The gospel being promised in the Old Testament, and that's exactly what Paul says here. 00:10:14.539 --> 00:10:22.120 He says, look at verse 2 again, he says that the gospel was promised beforehand through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures. 00:10:22.539 --> 00:10:29.559 In other words, before the New Testament was written, before Jesus Christ was born, 00:10:30.639 --> 00:10:35.919 the Father had already promised that a Messiah was coming. 00:10:35.919 --> 00:10:44.219 And He promised, it said, through His prophets, the authors, if you will, of the Old Testament, 00:10:44.519 --> 00:10:47.539 He promised through the prophets in the Holy Scriptures. 00:10:47.759 --> 00:10:50.319 Now, what scriptures is He referring to? 00:10:50.379 --> 00:10:58.019 Well, we know the authors are the prophets, but also Romans wasn't written until 57 AD. 00:10:58.879 --> 00:11:03.079 It's a rather early New Testament book. 00:11:03.080 --> 00:11:09.520 And so the gospel that He's proclaiming here is not Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. 00:11:10.379 --> 00:11:12.060 The book of Romans was written before that. 00:11:13.240 --> 00:11:18.759 The gospel He's referring to here, the place that it was proclaimed and promised, 00:11:19.040 --> 00:11:20.879 is none other than the Old Testament. 00:11:22.320 --> 00:11:26.379 The gospel, ladies and gentlemen, is not an afterthought of The gospel was already promised. 00:11:36.259 --> 00:11:39.379 Matter of fact, when original sin entered into the world, 00:11:39.520 --> 00:11:42.520 when Adam and Eve sinned in the garden, 00:11:42.820 --> 00:11:46.259 right after they sinned, the gospel is proclaimed. 00:11:47.139 --> 00:11:51.560 Genesis 3.15, God is talking to the serpent, otherwise known as Satan, 00:11:51.940 --> 00:11:53.220 and He says to the serpent, 00:11:53.220 --> 00:11:56.779 I will put enmity between you and the woman, 00:11:56.779 --> 00:11:59.600 and between your offspring and her offspring. 00:12:00.160 --> 00:12:04.800 He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel. 00:12:05.340 --> 00:12:08.480 In other words, God is promising that someone's coming, 00:12:08.620 --> 00:12:10.240 right there in Genesis chapter 3. 00:12:10.740 --> 00:12:13.360 Someone is coming who is going to do what? 00:12:13.440 --> 00:12:17.040 He's going to crush the head of the serpent. 00:12:17.039 --> 00:12:21.099 And as we make our way through redemptive history in the Old Testament, 00:12:21.259 --> 00:12:22.980 all the way up into the New Testament, 00:12:23.319 --> 00:12:30.559 it is slowly revealed to us that this Messiah who is coming to crush the head of the serpent 00:12:30.559 --> 00:12:32.120 in Genesis chapter 3.15, 00:12:32.980 --> 00:12:36.599 is none other than our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. 00:12:36.740 --> 00:12:38.639 And so the gospel is not an afterthought. 00:12:39.339 --> 00:12:42.539 The gospel was promised in the Old Testament. 00:12:42.539 -->
