our story, here in John 4, we're going to say that the woman at the well, 00:08:03.639 --> 00:08:08.100 she has these four responses as well when she meets Jesus. 00:08:09.319 --> 00:08:12.540 See, she's going to move from being skeptical of Jesus, 00:08:13.420 --> 00:08:15.439 to thinking very practically about Jesus, 00:08:15.639 --> 00:08:20.939 to thinking how he can be beneficial before she finally surrenders to him. 00:08:20.939 --> 00:08:24.639 And when she surrenders to him, just like me at basketball, 00:08:24.839 --> 00:08:27.079 she will get a new assignment as well. 00:08:27.579 --> 00:08:31.379 But this one is going to be greater than anything she could imagine. 00:08:32.299 --> 00:08:33.779 So let's dive into the passage. 00:08:33.899 --> 00:08:36.200 Let's start here in verses 1 through 6. 00:08:36.299 --> 00:08:41.360 Verses 1 through 6 basically give us a snapshot of what had been happening before. 00:08:41.500 --> 00:08:46.399 As I said, it's been a little while since we have been in our encounters with Jesus series. 00:08:46.399 --> 00:08:48.559 But if you remember, the last time that I preached, 00:08:48.559 --> 00:08:51.559 we were talking about Nicodemus, right? 00:08:51.599 --> 00:08:54.319 And Nicodemus was a Jewish Pharisee who wanted to figure out 00:08:54.319 --> 00:08:56.500 what does it mean to be born again? 00:08:57.239 --> 00:09:00.359 Well, Jesus had been spreading this good news and this gospel 00:09:00.359 --> 00:09:02.619 of what it means to be born again all throughout Jerusalem. 00:09:02.939 --> 00:09:05.099 And, well, it kind of became a problem. 00:09:05.799 --> 00:09:09.039 It was not very safe for him to stay in Jerusalem anymore. 00:09:09.599 --> 00:09:11.939 So him and his disciples, they packed up their tents, 00:09:11.979 --> 00:09:13.799 and they decided to move north. 00:09:14.459 --> 00:09:17.859 And as they're moving north, they have to go through Samaria. 00:09:18.559 --> 00:09:21.399 Now, if you know anything about the New Testament, 00:09:21.939 --> 00:09:25.539 you know that the Samaritans and Jews might as well have been cats and dogs. 00:09:25.879 --> 00:09:27.519 They did not get along. 00:09:29.559 --> 00:09:32.179 And see, so this is where we are as Jesus, 00:09:32.919 --> 00:09:36.319 with the sun high in the sky, goes through the town of Sychar, 00:09:36.919 --> 00:09:41.359 and he stops to get a drink from a well. 00:09:41.360 --> 00:09:47.000 He sends his disciples into town, and here comes a Samaritan woman. 00:09:47.740 --> 00:09:50.940 And he asked this woman for a You think life has got to be more than just a chance accident, and you think there's got to be more to life than work on Monday and drinks on Friday. 00:14:31.899 --> 00:14:35.100 I think you can identify a lot with the woman at the well here, can't you? 00:14:36.540 --> 00:14:40.740 Did you notice what time the woman was at the well? 00:14:41.480 --> 00:14:44.160 Verse 6 shows us noon. 00:14:45.399 --> 00:14:48.279 Women did not go to the well at noon. 00:14:48.279 --> 00:14:51.939 They either went early in the morning or late at night. 00:14:52.419 --> 00:14:56.519 So why is this woman going to fetch water at the hottest part of the day? 00:14:57.519 --> 00:14:59.019 It's because she's an outcast. 00:14:59.759 --> 00:15:01.639 She's not a part of the religious elite. 00:15:01.720 --> 00:15:04.959 She's actually quite the opposite, which we'll find out in just a minute. 00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:09.220 And I am sure she was asking similar questions to you. even care that I exist? 00:15:24.939 --> 00:15:35.720 And here, in one of her lowest moments of the day, where she is reminded every single day that she is alone, that she is a social outcast,
