Wesley graduated from college, 00:05:44.019 --> 00:05:49.879 one of the gifts that we gave him was a book called Love Does by Bob Goff. 00:05:49.979 --> 00:05:51.299 So it's older now. 00:05:51.439 --> 00:05:53.959 But in that book, he asks the question 00:05:53.959 --> 00:05:59.859 that I want to begin to help us think about where we're going. 00:05:59.979 --> 00:06:00.839 And the question was this, 00:06:00.839 --> 00:06:04.019 have you ever been stalked before? 00:06:04.019 --> 00:06:10.479 And then he describes how creepy it is to be stalked, 00:06:10.479 --> 00:06:13.819 which we certainly understand. 00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:18.939 But then he confesses that at one point in his life, 00:06:18.979 --> 00:06:19.939 he was a stalker. 00:06:20.639 --> 00:06:22.199 Pretty significant confession. 00:06:23.259 --> 00:06:24.279 And he said, 00:06:24.279 --> 00:06:25.899 like other stalkers, 00:06:26.159 --> 00:06:30.459 I learned a lot of facts about this person, 00:06:31.359 --> 00:06:33.779 studied those facts intently, 00:06:34.299 --> 00:06:37.839 and got a lot of pictures that I put up on the wall 00:06:37.839 --> 00:06:40.759 and studied those pictures as well. 00:06:40.759 --> 00:06:43.039 But I never really got to know that person, 00:06:43.119 --> 00:06:45.939 just like stalkers typically do. 00:06:46.059 --> 00:06:47.579 They never really get to know the person. 00:06:47.639 --> 00:06:50.000 They just get to know a lot about the person. 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:53.139 And then Bob, in his wonderful way, 00:06:53.199 --> 00:06:55.879 said the person I used to stalk was Jesus. 00:06:57.160 --> 00:06:57.480 And he said, 00:06:57.500 --> 00:06:58.519 I was in a Bible study, 00:06:58.620 --> 00:07:00.740 but it seems to me that all we did in that Bible study 00:07:00.740 --> 00:07:03.060 was learn a lot of facts about Jesus, 00:07:03.120 --> 00:07:04.439 but never really got to know Him, 00:07:04.500 --> 00:07:06.959 never really began to enjoy Him 00:07:06.959 --> 00:07:08.959 and delight in Him and love Him. 00:07:10.819 --> 00:07:13.019 And then in his humorous way, 00:07:13.060 --> 00:07:13.500 he says, 00:07:13.500 --> 00:07:14.720 you know, 00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:18.800 so what is it about equating Bible study 00:07:18.800 --> 00:07:21.759 with getting to know God anyway? 00:07:25.800 --> 00:07:26.399 And he said, 00:07:26.439 --> 00:07:26.600 you know, 00:07:26.620 --> 00:07:28.019 if I have people I care about, 00:07:28.220 --> 00:07:31.019 I don't want to just learn facts about them, 00:07:31.959 --> 00:07:33.139 how bad would that be? 00:07:33.560 --> 00:07:34.879 And if I'm going to get married, 00:07:34.959 --> 00:07:36.420 I don't want to just study the person. 00:07:36.500 --> 00:07:40.899 I want to take her out for a ride on a Ferris wheel 00:07:40.899 --> 00:07:42.519 or go sailing or go fishing, 00:07:42.639 --> 00:07:43.459 do something. 00:07:44.060 --> 00:07:45.279 And then he says, 00:07:45.359 --> 00:07:45.500 you know, 00:07:45.519 --> 00:07:46.099 and after all, 00:07:46.239 --> 00:07:48.359 there's a word for men 00:07:48.359 --> 00:07:50.299 who just kind of study the person 00:07:50.299 --> 00:07:51.219 that they're interested in 00:07:51.219 --> 00:07:52.539 but never take the initiative 00:07:52.539 --> 00:07:53.599 to get to know that person. 00:07:53.899 --> 00:07:55.259 They're called bachelors. 00:07:59.839 --> 00:08:00.279 Now, 00:08:00.339 --> 00:08:03.000 just so you're not worried about Bob Goff or me, 00:08:03.079 --> 00:08:04.560 he is in a Bible study, 00:08:04.560 --> 00:08:07.000 but the Bible study now is very different 00:08:07.000 --> 00:08:08.620 from what he was in before. 00:08:08.620 --> 00:08:09.259 Yes, 00:08:09.319 --> 00:08:11.100 he's learning more and more about Jesus. 00:08:11.259 --> 00:08:12.620 It's his life's ambition. 00:08:13.420 --> 00:08:15.639 But he's also getting to know Jesus, 00:08:15.860 --> 00:08:16.920 to delight in Jesus, 00:08:17.079 --> 00:08:18.420 to spend time with Jesus, 00:08:18.560 --> 00:08:20.379 to love Jesus. 00:08:20.759 --> 00:08:22.939 And I would say the older I get, 00:08:23.920 --> 00:08:28.480 I think the more focused my life becomes. 00:08:28.620 --> 00:08:30.160 I want it to be 00:08:30.160 --> 00:08:34.299 about knowing Jesus better. 00:08:34.299 --> just learn about him. 00:09:02.360 --> 00:09:05.960 The passage I want to read from today 00:09:05.960 --> 00:09:07.180 is Philippians 2, 00:09:07.240 --> 00:09:08.180 and I'm going to be reading it 00:09:08.180 --> 00:09:10.259 from the message. 00:09:10.399 --> 00:09:11.440 And let me just say up front, 00:09:11.500 --> 00:09:12.320 this is not going to be 00:09:12.320 --> 00:09:14.259 a typical sermon. 00:09:14.399 --> 00:09:16.300 I'm not going to just work my way 00:09:16.300 --> 00:09:17.180 through this passage. 00:09:17.300 --> 00:09:19.659 I'm going to share bits and pieces 00:09:38.620 When the time came, 00:09:39.279 --> 00:09:40.099 he, Jesus, 00:09:41.339 --> 00:09:43.159 set aside the privileges of deity 00:09:43.159 --> 00:09:45.479 and took on the status 00:10:50.360 --> 00:10:51.639 And at one point, 00:10:51.759 --> 00:10:54.659 he made this interesting distinction 00:10:54.659 --> 00:10:56.600 about worship. 00:10:56.960 --> 00:10:57.840 He said in worship, 00:10:57.980 --> 00:10:58.100 you know, 00:10:58.159 --> 00:10:59.379 we worship one God, 00:10:59.460 --> 00:11:01.620 but that God is both transcendent, 00:11:01.919 --> 00:11:02.980 He is above us, 00:11:03.000 --> 00:11:04.159 He's beyond us, 00:11:04.180 --> 00:11:05.399 He is in many ways 00:11:05.399 --> 00:11:07.000 different from us, 00:11:08.060 --> 00:11:10.039 and yet He's also imminent. 00:11:10.740 --> 00:11:12.240 He is the one who draws near, 00:11:12.720 --> 00:11:13.620 especially, of course, 00:11:13.659 --> 00:11:15.300 in the person of Christ 00:11:15.300 -->
