it becomes a little bit suspect. 00:03:03.560 --> 00:03:09.379 In fact, for many churches, to go to a church is to go to a place where your imagination will die. 00:03:11.439 --> 00:03:14.560 Because often we Christians are just very afraid of it. 00:03:14.560 --> 00:03:19.060 We're afraid of the type of freedom and creativity that comes with imagination. 00:03:19.879 --> 00:03:26.479 I remember many, many years ago, because I'm getting ancient of days, I went back to the church that I grew up in. 00:03:27.120 --> 00:03:28.259 Good godly church. 00:03:28.360 --> 00:03:34.840 I'm sure there are lots and lots of the people who went to that church are in high places of heaven today, those who have died. 00:03:34.840 --> 00:03:39.219 But I remember going back and I had just started university. 00:03:39.800 --> 00:03:43.580 And they all, with interest, asked me what I was doing about schooling. 00:03:44.159 --> 00:03:50.379 And when I told them that I had gone to a secular the imagination? 00:04:12.400 --> 00:04:15.660 Why is it that we encourage them with imagination with children, 00:04:15.900 --> 00:04:17.780 but are fearful of it with adults? 00:04:17.779 --> 00:04:23.679 And is this something that comes out of the fact that we're Christians? 00:04:24.079 --> 00:04:28.539 Or is it something, does the Bible tell us something very, very different about the imagination? 00:04:29.159 --> 00:04:35.139 That's what the text that we're going to look at today has some very, very powerful and interesting things to say about this question. 00:04:35.579 --> but at the time would have been just part of the Roman Empire. 00:05:14.060 --> 00:05:16.099 It was the second biggest city in the Roman Empire, 00:05:16.740 --> 00:05:20.860 a city devoted to the worship of Artemis, a goddess. 00:05:21.599 --> 00:05:24.459 And the people that he's writing to, 00:05:24.699 --> 00:05:28.259 almost all of them would have been pagans who would become Christians. ancient world, people my age, 00:08:02.500 --> 00:08:06.360 somebody like me might, in fact, a very, very rich person 00:08:06.360 --> 00:08:10.120 who didn't have an heir might look at me and say, 00:08:10.360 --> 00:08:12.019 that's the guy I want to have. 00:08:12.019 --> 00:08:15.680 I'm going to adopt that guy so that he can become my heir 00:08:15.680 --> 00:08:21.180 because he has five sons who are all healthy. 00:08:21.500 --> 00:08:22.959 This would be the perfect guy. 00:08:23.060 --> 00:08:24.000 And he seems, like, reasonable. 00:08:24.379 --> 00:08:26.240 He seems, you know, he knows how to brush his teeth. 00:08:26.359 --> 00:08:29.000 And at least on Sundays, I'm vaguely color-coordinated, 00:08:29.639 --> 00:08:31.599 although I am wearing sandals with socks, 00:08:31.680 --> 00:08:33.179 which is a fashion faux pas. 00:08:33.179 --> 00:08:34.799 But, you know, apart from that, 00:08:34.859 --> 00:08:38.120 he's probably a perfectly good guy for me to adopt. 00:08:38.839 --> 00:08:41.679 And when this rich person would have adopted me 00:08:41.679 --> 00:08:43.979 in the ancient world, I would have given up my last name. 00:08:44.059 --> 00:08:52.959 --> 00:08:54.599 And so one of the things that we looked at 00:08:54.599 --> 00:08:56.759 is that many people make the mistake of thinking 00:08:56.759 --> 00:09:00.379 that Christianity is just proposing a whole series of hypotheses. 00:09:00.379 --> 00:09:03.500 And obviously, it does propose things to believe. 00:09:04.019 --> 00:09:07.000 But at the heart of the Christian faith isn't just, 00:09:07.139 --> 00:09:10.559 I suggest this hypothesis and this hypothesis and this hypothesis. 00:09:11.299 --> 00:09:14.019 One of the ways to understand it is at the heart of the Bible, 00:09:14.120 --> 00:09:15.379 the heart of the New Testament, 00:09:15.559 --> 00:09:17.860 is that God is making a proposal to you. 00:09:19.139 --> 00:09:21.259 Can I adopt you as my son? 00:09:21.919 --> 00:09:24.399 And this is what's so breathtaking about this text 00:09:24.399 --> 00:09:26.080 and it's why we keep the male language. 00:09:26.620 --> 00:09:29.519 You see, one of the things, if you go back and study 00:09:29.519 --> 00:09:30.799 how the Christian church grew, 00:09:31.019 --> 00:09:34.120 in the first 50, 60 years, 100 years, 00:09:34.679 --> 00:09:37.159 the overwhelming majority of the church, 00:09:37.220 --> 00:09:39.220 not all, but the overwhelming majority of the church 00:09:39.220 --> 00:09:40.519 were women and slaves. 00:09:41.319 --> 00:09:44.120 You can't imagine in Canada 00:09:44.120 --> 00:09:47.480 how powerful the message would be to a woman 00:09:47.480 --> 00:09:53.740 who is lacking rights and power and property often, 00:09:53.740 --> 00:09:56.799 that if you become a Christian, 00:09:57.799 --> 00:10:02.039 the creator of the universe is going to adopt you 00:10:02.039 --> 00:10:06.139 as if you are his son 00:10:06.139 --> 00:10:09.279 with the right to inherit. 00:10:10.100 --> 00:10:13.820 It's hard for us to imagine a slave being told 00:10:13.820 --> 00:10:16.039 that if you give your life to Jesus, 00:10:16.600 --> 00:10:20.240 God will adopt you as his son 00:10:20.240 --> 00:10:23.659 with the full right of inheritance. 00:10:24.919 --> 00:10:26.940 And that's what's going on in this text.
