I can't remember exactly what it was. 00:02:39.760 --> 00:02:46.080 And they asked me a little bit about how especially they were very interested because they thought that 00:02:46.080 --> 00:02:51.360 Canadians, more so than Zimbabwe, and they thought it was a Zimbabwe problem too, but they thought 00:02:51.360 --> 00:02:57.440 Canadians in particular would have a harder time accepting when God says no to something they want. 00:02:57.439 --> 00:03:02.240 And this somehow came up because one of the interesting things about being there is we had 00:03:02.240 --> 00:03:09.280 some interesting conversations about the different cultures that we had to work in, right? And so they, 00:03:09.840 --> 00:03:15.120 so I said to them, well, what I say is that, and what is good for you to say too, is that when God says 00:03:15.120 --> 00:03:21.840 no to something that we really want, it's because he's offering us something better. And then they threw 00:03:21.840 --> 00:03:26.719 two examples my way because they said, well, okay, we sort of understand that, but I'm not sure how you 00:03:26.719 --> 00:03:33.120 would say that on these two particular cases. What if you say no to something, what is the better thing? 00:03:33.120 --> 00:03:38.640 And they said the first one they gave was, what would you say to a gay man or a lesbian woman? 00:03:40.240 --> 00:03:45.520 Because the Bible clearly says that that's wrong. What would you say to them is that if they say no to 00:03:45.520 --> 00:03:50.719 acting on their desires is the better thing. And the other thing they said, which is, they said is 00:03:50.719 --> 00:03:56.879 more relevant for Zimbabwe is for people who, because they're quite poor, decide to really devote 00:03:56.879 --> 00:04:01.840 their life to trying to get as much money as possible. What would you say when, but when the 00:04:01.840 --> 00:04:07.760 Bible says you have to be financially generous, what is the, like, there's a bit of a no there, 00:04:07.760 --> 00:04:13.200 George, about attaining riches at what's the better thing. So I'm not going to tell you what I said, 00:04:13.199 --> 00:04:17.680 but it was a very, you know, as I said in some of the videos that I sent, they're not, 00:04:17.680 --> 00:04:23.279 from our point of view, they're not very well educated, but they're very smart and very thoughtful, 00:04:23.279 --> 00:04:27.439 and it was a delight to spend time with them. But we're dealing, we're looking at a test, 00:04:27.439 --> 00:04:32.159 I don't know if you noticed it when, when, when Andrew read the text that I'm going to be looking 00:04:32.159 --> 00:04:38.240 at this morning. It's a bit of a confusing text, it goes rapid fire very briefly from, on three 00:04:38.240 --> 00:04:43.039 different linked ideas and bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. It's really a text that you 00:04:43.040 --> 00:04:47.520 need to slow down with and, and meditate and contemplate upon the different bits as you come 00:04:47.520 --> 00:04:53.360 across it. But there's very clearly something in the text that begins with, where the Bible is saying 00:04:53.360 --> 00:05:02.160 no to something that we really desire, that we really desire is as Canadians. It, it forbids boasting. 00:05:03.120 --> 00:05:10.240 And I think, I mean, that just seems like a weird way for the text to go. It's not, if you were reading 00:05:10.240 --> 00:05:14.960 the text along and saw how the argument was going, and then all of a sudden he brings this in, you'd go, 00:05:14.960 --> 00:05:19.759 wow, where on earth does that come from? Like it doesn't seem to fit. And if you think about it for 00:05:19.759 --> 00:05:27.600 a second, we live in a boasting culture. Not, not in a, you know, as Canadians we often try to hide it 00:05:27.600 --> 00:05:34.800 and be a bit self-effacing, but we're in an attainment culture. Our entire culture is based upon 00:05:34.800 --> 00:05:42.160 attainment and status. We want to attain educational degrees. We want to attain certificates. We want to 00:05:42.160 --> 00:05:48.000 attain reputations about maybe being really good with under, you know, with being a foodie and 00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:53.120 appreciating good food or appreciating good music, appreciating good literature, having lots of 00:05:53.120 --> 00:06:00.000 Instagram followers or TikTok followers, and, and on and on and on. We're in an attainment culture. 00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:06.079 And now this Bible passage seems to say that, you know, implicit to the attainment is a grounds for 00:06:06.079 --> 00:06:12.480 us to boast over others. And the Bible seems to be saying no to it. So why would it, why would the 00:06:12.480 --> 00:06:18.399 Bible even bring this up? And, you know, really the average Canadian hearing this text would say this, 00:06:19.680 --> 00:06:26.240 George, there's enough crap going on in my life trying to diminish me and make me less. 00:06:26.240 --> 00:06:32.480 Why on earth would I want to take to become a Christian and it's going to take away all the 00:06:32.480 --> 00:06:38.800 things in my life that makes life worth living? Like, why on earth would I do that? So let's look, 00:06:38.800 --> 00:06:46.000 let's walk towards the question. If you have your Bibles, it's Romans chapter 3, verses 27 to 31. 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:53.840 Just a few short verses, very packed with stuff. Romans chapter 3, verses 27 to 31. 00:06:53.839 --> 00:07:01.199 And, um, actually I'm going to read it verse 26 because if you'll notice here's a bit of a nerdish thing. 00:07:01.199 --> 00:07:07.039 Uh, verse 27 begins with the word then. So it implies that there's an argument and now there's like a 00:07:07.039 --> 00:07:14.399 consequence or an implication from it. So what, what just went on before it? Uh, it was to show, 00:07:14.399 --> 00:07:20.399 verse 26, that is the gospel, what God has done in the person of Jesus, a person of Jesus in his death 00:07:20.399 --> 00:07:26.799 upon the cross. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, that God is righteous and just 00:07:26.799 --> 00:07:34.000 and good, that he might be just. In other words, um, um, just understand to be a God of justice 00:07:34.639 --> 00:07:42.159 and the justifier. In other words, the one who's, uh, both remains just, but also makes us right with him 00:07:42.160 --> 00:07:48.400 in out compromising his justice and his goodness. It was to show his righteousness at the present time 00:07:48.400 --> 00:07:55.360 so that he, God, might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Then what becomes 00:07:55.360 --> 00:08:02.800 of our boasting? It is excluded. And in the original language, it is nullified. It is made null. It is 00:08:02.800 --> 00:08:11.360 seen as being useless. By what kind of law? Explain what this means in a moment. By a law of works. 00:08:11.360 --> 00:08:17.040 Actually, I'll say it right now. By what kind of law? Uh, and here, um, one of the things about reading 00:08:17.040 --> 00:08:22.639 the book of Romans is it's really designed to be read slowly. Uh, most of us read, if we read at all, 00:08:22.639 --> 00:08:28.080 we read very quickly, trying to get the point. Uh, most of us read emails. I mean, a very common problem 00:08:28.079 --> 00:08:33.199 for those in organizations is you send out an email and, you know, a significant number of people 00:08:33.199 --> 00:08:40.079 don't act on the email correctly. I'm not trying to make any of you feel guilty because most of us 00:08:40.079 --> 00:08:45.439 just scan it. And because we scan it, we miss like half the things that are said that happen in the email, 00:08:45.439 --> 00:08:52.000 right? But the book of Romans is designed to be read slowly and, uh, there's lots of nuances. So when it says, 00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:59.840 uh, boasting is excluded or nullified or made, uh, like empty by what kind of law? And here, the word 00:08:59.840 --> 00:09:08.399 law means what type of, uh, logic, what type of principle, what type of rule. So what is the principle 00:09:08.399 --> 00:09:15.519 or the logic that would make boasting something which is, uh, useless? And then he says, by a law of 00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:20.879 works. In other words, by a principle or logic of works, which I'll explain in a moment. No, 00:09:20.879 --> 00:09:28.720 but by the law of faith, the logic or principle or rule of faith in Christ to be the one who makes 00:09:28.720 --> 00:09:34.720 us right with God. And then verse 28, for we hold that one is justified by faith, that is made right 00:09:34.720 --> 00:09:42.159 with God by faith in Christ apart from works of the law. So, uh, what's, what's going on here with 00:09:42.159 --> 00:09:47.360 this whole text? How can we sort of understand it? Well, uh, normally I don't mention the coffee shops 00:09:47.360 --> 00:09:51.759 that I go to, uh, cause I don't want to, you know, I mean, they don't give me any money for 00:09:51.759 --> 00:09:56.800 advertising them and, and everything, but I, those of you know that I go to Starbucks a lot. 00:09:56.800 --> 00:10:00.800 So, uh, one of the things that happened in Starbucks recently is they announced in January 00:10:00.800 --> 00:10:06.320 or February that they were changing their reward system. Like a lot of, uh, of organizations, they 00:10:06.320 --> 00:10:13.360 want to create a brand loyalty by, if you, if you spend a certain number of dollars, you get extra goodies. 00:10:13.360 --> 00:10:18.560 So they decided to revamp that and they now have four categories. Uh, you have a category, 00:10:18.560 --> 00:10:23.840 a null category for people who aren't registered, they just pay. And then they have a low level 00:10:23.840 --> 00:10:28.320 category. I think it's green. And then they have a higher level, uh, which is gold. And then they 00:10:28.320 --> 00:10:33.440 have the highest level, which is the reserve status. And you get a, uh, you get the best benefits if you, 00:10:33.440 --> 00:10:38.080 if you're in that. So, you know, when it was announced, I was a bit curious as to what 00:10:38.080 --> 00:10:44.000 I was going to be. Uh, and you can ask me later what I, what I, what I, what I attained. But here's the 00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:50.639 thing. Most people, when they think of the average person, when they think of getting right with God, 00:10:51.360 --> 00:10:57.120 they think of it a little bit like the way Starbucks or some other group is actually giving 00:10:57.120 --> 00:11:04.320 you reward status. It's as if God says, let's go and see, uh, you know, it's time for me to have a few 00:11:04.320 --> 00:11:08.560 more people that I'm going to allow into heaven, whatever heaven is defined at, you know, whether 00:11:08.560 --> 00:11:14.080 it's Muslim heaven, Buddhist heaven, Hindu heaven, you know, agnostic heaven, spiritual heaven. You 00:11:14.080 --> 00:11:18.960 know, it's as if God says periodically, you know what? I haven't done this in a month. I think we 00:11:18.960 --> 00:11:23.040 should go down and look and see how many people have accumulated enough points to get the highest 00:11:23.040 --> 00:11:27.440 status. And then you go down and they go and they look and they look at, you know, you and no, 00:11:27.440 --> 00:11:32.240 no, you're a green card. No, you're, you're gold. No, no. Oh, you're, you're reserve status. You know, 00:11:32.240 --> 00:11:35.919 you're, you're nothing. And that's sort of how it works. God goes and looks and 00:11:35.919 --> 00:11:42.080 sees how many points you've accumulated. And that just seems like a natural way to have things work. 00:11:42.080 --> 00:11:47.600 And usually in terms of religion and spirituality, the points will be different, but the imagination's 00:11:47.600 --> 00:11:52.720 exactly the same. So if you're a Muslim, it's, you know, how many times do you, you know, how many days 00:11:52.720 --> 00:11:57.279 have you prayed five times during the day? And have you done all the appropriate hand washing and, 00:11:57.279 --> 00:12:02.080 and motions and how often you go to the mosque and have you gone and, you know, made a pilgrimage to 00:12:02.080 --> 00:12:05.759 Mecca and, you know, whatever it is. And have you done good things and acts of charity and kept 00:12:05.759 --> 00:12:09.840 Ramadan and, you know, for Buddhists, there'll be Buddhist types of principles and, you know, 00:12:09.840 --> 00:12:16.240 for Hindus, Hindu and Christian forms of this abound as well. When the gospel gets lost, it's replaced with 00:12:16.240 --> 00:12:20.960 religion. And it's usually some combination of, you know, the, the good things you've done get a point, 00:12:20.960 --> 00:12:24.879 you know, every good thing you've done gets a point. And when you avoid doing a bad thing, oh, 00:12:24.879 --> 00:12:29.840 you get a point for that too, when you don't do a bad thing, you know. And, and then normally what happens 00:12:29.840 --> 00:12:34.240 is you add other cultural things in because either just right and wrong is sort of boring. 00:12:34.240 --> 00:12:38.399 So you add a few spiritual things or religious things, and then that's a little bit boring too. 00:12:38.399 --> 00:12:43.120 So usually what happens is you add other types of things. And, and, you know, in Canada, at an 00:12:43.120 --> 00:12:48.480 unconscious level, we'd say, are you good looking or not? Are you rich or not? Do you have well-educated 00:12:48.480 --> 00:12:53.120 or not? Do you have good people skills or not? Do you have lots of followers on Instagram or not? 00:12:53.120 --> 00:12:56.720 You know, and there's a variety of cultural things, you know, do you vote for the right party, 00:12:56.720 --> 00:13:01.680 you know, or not? Are you part of the right group or not? And, and then all of these things add up 00:13:01.680 --> 00:13:06.800 points. And that's sort of how you're understood to be a good person, a well-adjusted person, 00:13:06.800 --> 00:13:11.040 the type of person that if you're an agnostic or an atheist, you say, well, if there is a God, 00:13:11.040 --> 00:13:15.040 these are the types of people that God would accept because they're very good. They have the points, 00:13:15.040 --> 00:13:20.879 they have the reserve status, the highest status. And, and that's just how the normal imagination works. 00:13:20.879 --> 00:13:27.439 And about how it works with God. That's in a sense, when it says here, if you look at verse 27, 00:13:28.000 --> 00:13:35.360 that's what, that's what the Bible here is calling the law of works. It's a law of accomplishments. It's 00:13:35.360 --> 00:13:41.759 the points. But it's saying here that this, and if you think about it for a second, there is implicit in 00:13:41.759 --> 00:13:48.960 all of that pride and boasting. Well, I'm not like those other people who only have a Algonquin degree, 00:13:50.159 --> 00:13:54.080 you know, but then some of you have more degrees than me, or I'm not like those other people. Like, 00:13:54.080 --> 00:13:58.399 I'm not like those people who are consumed with having Instagram followers. I'm above that. I don't 00:13:58.399 --> 00:14:03.200 have any Instagram followers, you know, or something like that, whatever it is. It's implicitly, 00:14:03.919 --> 00:14:09.519 there's a type of boasting. There's a claim that you're making against God. And here's the shock of the 00:14:09.519 --> 00:14:15.600 gospel. Here's the complete and utter shock of the gospel. What the Bible text here is calling the law 00:14:15.600 --> 00:14:21.519 of faith, or the logic, or the rule of faith. Because what the Bible describes is this, 00:14:22.879 --> 00:14:26.720 just sort of, you know, personifying it. It's God is up in heaven, and he says, 00:14:28.240 --> 00:14:36.639 you know, Peter? You know, Abraham? There's this guy David down there. And you know, he's a murderer 00:14:36.639 --> 00:14:45.279 and an adulterer, and he oppressed a poor man. I think I'm going to go down and save him. 00:14:46.960 --> 00:14:55.759 Oh, Peter, look, there's this guy Paul. You know, Paul was a massive hater. He was deeply prejudiced. 00:14:57.120 --> 00:15:03.600 He manipulated legal systems to send people in jail. I think I'm going to go and save him. 00:15:03.600 --> 00:15:11.120 That's what the gospel describes as happening. 00:15:13.440 --> 00:15:18.639 That God, the Son of God, sets aside his glory and splendor and divine prerogatives and the 00:15:18.639 --> 00:15:24.159 adulation and worship of angels and all creation. And one of the neat things in the new heaven and the 00:15:24.159 --> 00:15:28.160 new earth, we'll get to hear, we'll get to hear how the Rockies praise God. 00:15:28.159 --> 00:15:36.799 We'll get to hear how the birds and the wind praise God. We'll get to hear how the oceans praise God. 00:15:37.839 --> 00:15:42.799 And God, the Son of God, he already heard that. He lived in the midst of it. He was enthroned upon 00:15:42.799 --> 00:15:50.079 the praises of angels and the created order. And he decides, while remaining fully God, to set aside his 00:15:50.080 --> 00:15:56.160 glory, his prerogatives, his praise, his divine splendor, but remaining fully God, takes into 00:15:56.160 --> 00:16:06.080 himself our human nature and he stoops to save us. He stoops. He bows. He comes down from heaven, 00:16:06.080 --> 00:16:12.480 so low that he enters the human race, not as a general, not as an athlete, not as an intellectual, 00:16:12.480 --> 00:16:18.720 not as a king or an emperor, but as a zygote, in the womb of a 15-year-old girl named Mary. 00:16:21.200 --> 00:16:27.840 16-year-old girl named Mary. And he goes through the normal process of gestation, of birth. 00:16:28.639 --> 00:16:34.800 He lives a lower working class life, a lower working class Jewish life as an observant Jewish man, 00:16:34.800 --> 00:16:40.960 man who would have worked cutting stone and hammering things together with his mother and his father. He 00:16:40.960 --> 00:16:44.720 would have buried his father. He would have seen the death and the grief of his community. 00:16:45.280 --> 00:16:51.200 He suffered the trials and temptations that you and I suffer only without ever sinning. And then he 00:16:51.200 --> 00:16:57.360 begins his public ministry and performs miracles and does wonderful transformative teaching. And he's 00:16:57.360 --> 00:17:02.960 completely and utterly rejected by the ones who should assist him. And at the end of the end of the 00:17:02.960 --> 00:17:08.079 end, he's with himself other than a few women. And this isn't me being derogatory, but throughout most of 00:17:08.079 --> 00:17:14.799 human history, until the gospel has taken root in human cultures to extol and exalt the value of 00:17:14.799 --> 00:17:20.240 women, it has been the case of most human cultures that women are looked down on. And but for a few 00:17:20.240 --> 00:17:25.679 women at a distance, he is completely and utterly alone and stripped naked. And he dies on a cross. 00:17:25.679 --> 00:17:30.720 And on the cross, we as Christians understand that he did not die for anything that he had done. And it 00:17:30.720 --> 00:17:36.399 wasn't the nails that held him there, but a man who can still the storms, and a man who can feed 00:17:36.400 --> 00:17:42.720 5,000 and a man who can raise the dead, the only way he could die is if his love is holding him to the 00:17:42.720 --> 00:17:49.600 cross. As the hymn says, love to the loveless shown that lovely we might be. And as I like to amend it, 00:17:49.600 --> 00:17:55.200 love to the loveless shown that loved and lovely we may be. And he dies and he takes all there is to 00:17:55.200 --> 00:18:00.240 taste of death. And three days in the grave takes all there is to taste of death. And then he rises from 00:18:00.240 --> 00:18:05.440 the dead. And in rising from the dead, he has dealt with all that separates us from God. He has dealt 00:18:05.440 --> 00:18:12.240 with the sin and the evil which separates us from God and causes death. And he's vindicated as God the 00:18:12.240 --> 00:18:21.279 Savior. And he has come entirely because he saw adulterers and murderers like David. And he saw 00:18:21.279 --> 00:18:27.039 haters like Paul. And he saw you and me. And that is why he came to die. 00:18:30.240 --> 00:18:34.879 The biggest difference between those who have accepted beginning to be formed by the gospel and 00:18:34.879 --> 00:18:43.200 those that are not is how we view our accomplishments and good works. And by the logic of what Christ has 00:18:43.200 --> 00:18:48.240 done for us in the cross, boasting is gone. 00:18:51.200 --> 00:18:56.799 I mean, it's still there, by the way. I'm not saying I never boast. I'm not saying I'm never proud. 00:18:57.360 --> 00:19:02.080 But I understand it as being, I'm coming to understand it in light of the gospel as vain. 00:19:03.039 --> 00:19:08.799 And I come to understand it in the gospel that it's not stripping away everything that makes life 00:19:08.799 --> 00:19:12.240 worth living. And I was at a gathering 00:19:53.360 --> 00:19:58.640 once of some missionaries and there were some missionaries and others. And they said, you know, 00:19:58.640 --> 00:20:02.320 who's been to the most countries? You know, they had actually there long enough to have their passport 00:20:02.320 --> 00:20:07.520 stamped. You know, this guy said twin, you know, 10, another 20, another 30. And then this young 00:20:07.520 --> 00:20:14.640 working class guy, I think his number was 87 or something like that, because he'd driven some 00:20:14.640 --> 00:20:21.840 hyalurxes from Britain to quite deep into Africa. And he'd gone through a whole pile of countries and 00:20:21.840 --> 00:20:26.320 other type of stuff. So those people who are putting their pride and their sense of self-worth on having 00:20:26.319 --> 00:20:29.759 travel to more countries, all of a sudden, it's completely and utterly undercut. They didn't 00:20:29.759 --> 00:20:33.519 even know they should worry about it. They just assumed that working class guy is just obviously 00:20:33.519 --> 00:20:38.559 a bit of a loser compared to them. And there he is, he's beat them on that. And it's pride is always 00:20:38.559 --> 00:20:44.000 unstable. You don't get the promotion that you think you should have, where it finally comes time for you 00:20:44.000 --> 00:20:50.159 to retire. And nobody remembers you within a year of your retiring at where your finances start to 00:20:50.159 --> 00:20:54.879 collapse or all sorts of types of things, the things that were just even for a moment, I know for you 00:20:54.880 --> 00:20:58.800 young people, it's hard to imagine. But apart from that, the fact that there's different people groups with 00:24:21.680 --> 00:24:26.160 different cultures and different languages, there's nothing better or worse. One of the things I had to 00:24:26.160 --> 00:24:30.640 say to the fellows, so we, one of the things, they have like next to no money and no resources, 00:24:30.640 --> 00:24:34.960 so one of the things that we did going there is we bought them two books. One of them is Concise 00:24:34.960 --> 00:24:40.480 Theology by J.I. Packer, that if you don't have it, it's well worth buying, Concise Theology by J.I. 00:24:40.480 --> 00:24:46.640 Packer. The other thing is we bought them an ESV study Bible, and I told them that it's one of the best 00:24:46.640 --> 00:24:53.600 two Bible translations with a really good, very good academics have written the notes. And then I said to 00:24:53.599 --> 00:24:59.439 them, by the way, there's nothing special about English. It just happens to be that at this point 00:24:59.439 --> 00:25:05.919 in time in human history, there's a lot of godly English-speaking scholars who've come up with a 00:25:05.919 --> 00:25:12.480 good translation of good notes. I said, I pray for the day that in 20 years' time, the whole world says, 00:25:12.480 --> 00:25:16.240 if you want the best translation and the best study Bible, you've got to learn Shona, 00:25:16.240 --> 00:25:23.039 which is what they spoke. Because there's nothing special about English. And then one of the things 00:25:23.039 --> 00:25:27.359 in that culture is, I discovered this after a while, it would become one of those call and response things. 00:25:27.359 --> 00:25:34.240 I say amen, no, I say hallelujah, they all respond amen. And in that culture you go hallelujah, amen, 00:25:34.240 --> 00:25:39.039 hallelujah, amen, hallelujah, amen. You can do it several times. So he said, I'm praying for the day 00:25:39.039 --> 00:25:45.039 when in 20 years, 25 years, the best translation of the Bible, the best study Bible ever written is in Shona. 00:25:45.039 --> 00:25:52.319 Hallelujah! And there's things that are good in culture and things that are just neutral. 00:25:58.079 --> 00:26:02.240 And that's the next thing which is said. Look what happened. If Jesus is the only way to be made right with God, that seems very, very narrow. 00:26:12.960 --> 00:26:20.000 But what Paul is going to say is, actually, no, no, no, the logic of faith actually is not narrow. On one 00:26:20.000 --> 00:26:27.200 level, it's very, very narrow, but it's narrow only so that every single human being can hear about it 00:26:27.200 --> 00:26:33.200 and have the choice to respond. Look what, look what's, that's what's going on next in verses 29 to 30. 00:26:33.200 --> 00:26:40.160 Or is God the God of Jewish people only? Is he not the God of pagans or Gentiles as well? 00:26:40.160 --> 00:26:46.640 Yes, of Gentiles, of pagans also. Since God is one, that means there's not only there's two things, 00:26:46.640 --> 00:26:51.680 he's only one God, there's only one God, but also that there's this unity, really important. You cannot look up to God if you're looking down your nose at others. 00:27:55.279 --> 00:27:59.920 It's completely impossible to look up to God when you're looking down your nose at other people. 00:28:00.559 --> 00:28:07.600 And if you are looking up to God, you aren't looking down your nose at other people. The law of work, the law of works diminishes and divides people. And on one hand, 00:29:32.000 --> 00:29:35.519 I wanted to take a picture of it to show you, but on the other hand, I knew that it would be 00:29:35.519 --> 00:29:42.720 dehumanizing to them for me to take their pictures. So I didn't. But it was poor, really. 00:29:45.359 --> 00:29:51.279 But I get to be there in their church. I was the first white person in the history of that 00:29:51.279 --> 00:29:57.200 congregation to ever speak there. On one hand, I had a disadvantage. I couldn't relate the Bible to 00:29:57.200 --> 00:30:03.759 them across the culture very well because I don't know their culture. On the other hand, I had laser 00:30:03.759 --> 00:30:14.240 focus attention because of my color. I mean, they listened to every word. I mean, one of the experiences 00:30:14.240 --> 00:30:21.119 if you go to Zimbabwe is you basically never see anybody who's not black. Like, virtually never. 00:30:21.119 --> 00:30:26.239 Maybe in parts of downtown Harare. But if you get out of that, you only see, you know, 00:30:26.239 --> 00:30:32.399 other Zimbabweans. And I got to have lunch at somebody's home. And when I was teaching at the 00:30:32.399 --> 00:30:37.919 training center, it was a Zimbabwe training center, not where tourists would go, where Westerners would 00:30:37.919 --> 00:30:43.759 usually go. And I ate meals with them, how they would normally eat. The meals cooked over a fire, 00:30:43.759 --> 00:30:48.079 right? They have a well, but they have to have a generator for power. And, you know, but 00:30:48.079 --> 00:30:57.759 I am accepted. I am their neighbor and they treat me in a neighborly way. And they are our neighbors, too. 00:31:01.279 --> 00:31:05.359 And you have language difficulties to navigate and cultural differences. You know, one of the 00:31:05.359 --> 00:31:10.559 things they did there, I'm not saying you should do this. This is their culture. When I came into the 00:31:10.559 --> 00:31:16.720 church, first of all, it was insistent that the usher had to carry my Bible and my bag and my water 00:31:16.720 --> 00:31:22.240 to my seat. And then when I sat down, I am not making this up, she got down on her knees with a 00:31:22.240 --> 00:31:23.599 cloth and cleaned my shoes. 00:31:23.599 --> 00:31:30.959 And then they sang a special welcome song where everybody in the congregation came up and shook 00:31:30.959 --> 00:31:39.039 my hand or gave me a hug. And when I went to preach, the usher carried my Bible and my water to the 00:31:39.039 --> 00:31:44.000 pulpit. And then when I was leaving it, they carried it back. And when I was leaving, I tried to pick up 00:31:44.000 --> 00:31:48.559 my... No, no, no, no, no. And it would insult... That's their culture, by the way, right? Just their culture. 00:31:48.559 --> 00:31:52.879 And there's things about their culture that are very, very, very wonderful. But here's right, 00:31:52.879 --> 00:31:59.200 here's the point. The law of works diminishes and divides people, but the law of faith creates 00:31:59.200 --> 00:32:07.519 new neighbors across human divides and human history. Calvin is your neighbor. Augustine is your 00:32:07.519 --> 00:32:16.799 neighbor. St. John Chrysostom is your neighbor. Fanny Crosby is your neighbor. They're your neighbors. 00:32:18.559 --> 00:32:28.480 That's the logic of receiving a relationship with God, which is completely and utterly a gift. And 00:32:28.480 --> 00:32:34.480 then when you belong to God, you're not just like this isolated soul relating individually to God. 00:32:34.480 --> 00:32:42.319 He forms you in his kingdom. And his kingdom is in... His goal is to be every people group and every 00:32:42.319 --> 00:32:50.399 language and every culture. And that each culture, the Shona culture is to be transformed by the gospel, 00:32:50.399 --> 00:32:55.359 the things within it which are not good. And the Canadian culture and our culture is to be transformed 00:32:55.359 --> 00:33:00.879 by the gospel and the things that are not... that are not good. But there's ultimately just neighbors. 00:33:00.880 --> 00:33:11.600 It's beautiful. It is what our modern DEI is trying to accomplish with no spiritual roots and ultimately, 00:33:11.600 --> 00:33:16.560 in many cases, causing problems and heartache. And it's all there in the gospel, what is really being 00:33:16.560 --> 00:33:23.840 longed for in our culture. But there's another problem. A few years ago, I was sharing with somebody 00:33:23.840 --> 00:33:28.640 about how in the gospel that God doesn't look at your accomplishments, just like what I described, 00:33:28.640 --> 00:33:32.560 that, you know, in a sense, it's not that God says, I'm going to go down and look for some good people 00:33:32.560 --> 00:33:37.120 so I can have them as part of my kingdom. But it's instead like God said, look at that David guy. 00:33:37.120 --> 00:33:43.440 You know, he murdered... He murdered a guy. He caused all sorts of trouble for his nation. He's an adulterer. 00:33:43.440 --> 00:33:48.320 I'm going to go save him. And when I explained all of that to her, her response was, 00:33:48.320 --> 00:33:52.000 why on earth would anybody who's a Christian ever do anything good? 00:33:52.000 --> 00:34:00.240 If God doesn't weigh your merits but pardon your offenses, why on earth would you do anything good 00:34:00.240 --> 00:34:06.319 or just? And that's a good question. Look what Paul says next in verse 31. 00:34:06.319 --> 00:34:15.119 Do we then overthrow the law? And here, law means the moral law. Do we overthrow the moral law by this 00:34:15.119 --> 00:34:21.039 faith? By no means, on the contrary, we uphold the law. Now, why is it that Paul says that? If you 00:34:21.039 --> 00:34:26.800 could put up the point now, Claire, that would be very helpful. The law of works undermines true 00:34:26.800 --> 00:34:35.360 goodness and justice. The law of faith upholds and illuminates the beauty of goodness and justice. 00:34:36.400 --> 00:34:44.079 The law of works undermines true goodness and justice. Well, how do my accomplishments work? 00:34:50.799 --> 00:34:54.559 Some of you who've grown up in very, very fundamentalist type churches, I don't want to 00:34:54.559 --> 00:34:59.359 dump on them, but I want to use a Christian example. You'll know that very quickly, many of those churches 00:34:59.359 --> 00:35:05.119 become very, very legalistic and they become very, very legalistic over frankly stuff that doesn't 00:35:05.119 --> 00:35:11.039 matter and God doesn't give a hoot about. And they get very legalistic about how big the Bible is, 00:35:11.039 --> 00:35:16.559 whether it's black or not, whether it's the right translation, how you walk, whether you avoid doing 00:35:16.559 --> 00:35:21.279 certain things, whether you accomplish certain things. And ironically, in churches that preach 00:35:21.279 --> 00:35:26.480 grace, they often end up becoming very, very, very rule-based. And what usually happens in churches 00:35:26.480 --> 00:35:31.840 like that, if people are honest, they're very good at keeping things on the surface while inside things 00:35:31.840 --> 00:35:36.720 can be completely and utterly chaotic and bad. And one of the things that happens is that in those 00:35:36.720 --> 00:35:42.559 types of situations, and this is true of all works in every type of culture, you end up inevitably 00:35:42.559 --> 00:35:45.920 knowing that there's certain things you're not very good at keeping, certain good things you're not 00:35:45.920 --> 00:35:51.440 good at keeping. So inevitably, those things about goodness, you start to diminish them. So for 00:35:51.440 --> 00:35:55.599 instance, in our political discourse right now, one of the problems going on in our political discourse 00:35:55.599 --> 00:36:00.720 is there's a huge part of our country that think, if you don't think like me, you're a communist. 00:36:00.720 --> 00:36:05.280 And there's a whole other side of the congregation, the culture that says, if you don't think like me, 00:36:05.280 --> 00:36:10.480 you're really part of the Ku Klux Klan. And you can't even have a conversation. And so what happens 00:36:10.480 --> 00:36:15.039 in those types of things, feeling very, very righteous, they take their type of identity from these types of 00:36:15.039 --> 00:36:21.199 things. And it means you can bad mouth and lie and slander and do all sorts of evil things against 00:36:21.199 --> 00:36:28.800 the other side and feel completely and utterly self-righteous about it. And a law of accomplishments 00:36:28.800 --> 00:36:33.440 and attainments ends up meaning you can say all sorts of things that are right and wrong, aren't right 00:36:33.440 --> 00:36:38.559 or wrong, or don't apply to you, or you're very good at multiplying things or thinking certain things 00:36:38.559 --> 00:36:43.039 are really, really important. Like what really, really matters is how slim I am or how fit I am 00:36:43.039 --> 00:36:48.639 or how much money I have and not worry at all about whether you're the type of person who tells lies 00:36:48.639 --> 00:36:54.800 or can't keep confidences or has no generosity or no compassion. Because we do things when we're on 00:36:54.800 --> 00:36:59.360 the attainment model. Before we know it, we're giving ourselves a pass, we're giving ourselves mulligans, 00:37:00.000 --> 00:37:04.880 do-overs, we're saying those things don't really matter, we're working on image attainment and all of 00:37:04.880 --> 00:37:10.079 that type of stuff. And when you're working on image management, that means you're terrified that 00:37:10.079 --> 00:37:15.840 somebody would press through your force field and see you as you really are, which means that intimacy 00:37:15.840 --> 00:37:27.360 gets harder and harder and harder and harder. But the law of faith says God looked down from heaven and 00:37:27.360 --> 00:37:38.559 said, look at that Paul, he's a hater. And he's a guy who manipulates the law. And he's deeply prejudiced. 00:37:39.360 --> 00:37:44.880 And he helped have certain people killed. And he had innocent people thrown in jail. 00:37:44.880 --> 00:38:04.079 When you know that you've been saved by grace alone, as a gift, by faith alone, in Christ alone, 00:38:04.480 --> 00:38:11.280 to God's glory alone.
