of a person called Jesus. 00:00:50.019 --> 00:00:52.879 Our laws are based on a book about him. 00:00:52.880 --> 00:00:59.140 Some of the most popular names, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, are from the Bible. 00:01:00.420 --> 00:01:07.180 A study done 10 years ago found that the most famous person in history was Jesus. 00:01:08.219 --> 00:01:10.280 Our calendars are built around him. 00:01:10.340 --> 00:01:15.939 We're coming up to Christmas, and then in Easter, we have the time we remember his death and resurrection. 00:01:15.939 --> 00:01:22.859 And he has impacted some people's lives so much that they would even die for him. 00:01:23.920 --> 00:01:28.579 But is there any historical evidence for this Jesus? 00:01:29.379 --> 00:01:35.200 And if there is any evidence, is this real. 00:01:57.079 --> 00:02:03.299 On the one side, there's some people who think Jesus did not exist at all, full stop. 00:02:03.759 --> 00:02:08.139 And then there's people here who think, well, maybe he existed, but I don't care. 00:02:08.219 --> 00:02:09.500 I don't want him to have any influence. 00:02:09.500 --> 00:02:12.460 And then there's people over here in this camp who think, do you dive into the historical evidence and see if there was a real Jesus, to see where we should fit on that scale, to see if he is worth any influence on our lives. 00:02:48.280 --> 00:02:51.699 So should Bible called the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. 00:03:14.340 --> 00:03:21.219 One historian described them as the best and oldest sources we have for knowing about the life of Jesus. 00:03:21.740 --> 00:03:23.359 And we're going to look at them in a bit. 00:03:24.139 --> 00:03:30.079 Because some people would say you can't trust the books of the Bible as a history book because they're written by religious fanatics. 00:03:30.560 --> 00:03:31.740 So you've got to put them to the side. 00:03:31.840 --> 00:03:32.620 You've got to ignore them. 00:03:33.719 --> 00:03:34.919 Historians don't say that. 00:03:35.560 --> 00:03:36.819 But we're not going to start there. 00:03:36.960 --> 00:03:43.120 Where we're going to start today is looking at historical sources of Jesus from outside the Bible. 00:03:43.719 --> 00:03:48.139 What proof is there that Jesus existed from outside the Bible, if there is any? 00:03:48.139 --> 00:03:51.340 And does it line up with what the Bible says? 00:03:52.060 --> 00:03:53.219 So we're going to have a look at that. 00:03:53.280 --> 00:03:57.240 We're going to have a look at three historical recordings of Jesus this morning. 00:03:57.780 --> 00:04:01.620 One report comes from a Jewish historian called Josephus. 00:04:03.060 --> 00:04:04.560 Here's Josephus on the screen. 00:04:06.099 --> 00:04:09.460 He wrote in around AD 93. 00:04:10.280 --> 00:04:13.699 And he wrote some reports that had happened 30 years ago. 00:04:14.319 --> 00:04:15.319 You can see it on the screen. 00:04:15.419 --> 00:04:16.360 Sorry if it's a little bit small. 00:04:16.899 --> 00:04:18.480 Let me read briefly. 00:04:18.480 --> 00:04:24.000 But the younger Ananus, who, as we said, received the high priesthood. 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:39.259 So there's this guy called Ananus, who was the high priest of the Jews, assembled a council of judges and brought before it the brother of Jesus, the so-called Christ, whose name was James, together with some others. 00:04:39.259 --> 00:04:41.259 And having accused them as lawbreakers. 00:04:41.259 --> 00:04:44.259 He delivered them over to be stoned. 00:04:44.259 --> 00:05:02.000 And so we have this very old historical report from a historian called Josephus, a Jewish historian, that there was a man called James who was stoned to death because he was a religious fanatic, had moved away from Judaism. 00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:07.139 That sounds consistent with what we see, what we know of the Jewish people. 00:05:07.139 --> 00:05:10.819 They would stone people who were not following the laws. 00:05:10.819 --> 00:05:17.240 And what it says about James is that he had a brother called Jesus, the so-called Christ. 00:05:18.599 --> 00:05:20.579 Now that Christ title is really significant. 00:05:21.180 --> 00:05:27.120 It tells us of Jesus as being the promised king who would come and save his people. 00:05:29.360 --> 00:05:32.719 So he's our first character, first piece of historical evidence. 00:05:34.500 --> 00:05:37.339 The second is Cornelius Tacitus. 00:05:37.339 --> 00:05:44.000 He was called the greatest historian of ancient Rome who lived from 55 to 120 AD. 00:05:45.239 --> 00:05:58.639 He wrote that Christus, another word for Christ, Christus, the founder of the name, was put to death by Pontius Pilate, procurator or governor of Judea in the reign of Tiberius. 00:05:58.639 --> 00:06:08.519 But the pernicious superstition repressed for a time broke out again, not only through Judea where the mischief originated, but through the city of Rome also. 00:06:08.819 --> 00:06:10.599 I actually really like his writing. 00:06:11.159 --> 00:06:12.159 It's quite interesting. 00:06:12.300 --> 00:06:12.819 It's quite exciting. 00:06:12.899 --> 00:06:14.839 I feel like I want to actually go and read some more of Tacitus. 00:06:15.599 --> 00:06:22.199 And so Tacitus helpfully speaks of someone called Jesus put to death by Pontius Pilate. 00:06:22.199 --> 00:06:27.219 And there were many superstitious beliefs about Jesus. 00:06:27.959 --> 00:06:29.379 Now, I'd love to know the details. 00:06:29.500 --> 00:06:31.659 We don't have any more details on what they are. 00:06:31.699 --> 00:06:34.180 But it could be that Jesus walked on water. 00:06:34.519 --> 00:06:36.300 It could be that he turned water into wine. 00:06:36.339 --> 00:06:39.139 It could be that he died and rose again. 00:06:39.139 --> 00:06:42.819 It could be that the believers believed that they would also rise again. 00:06:42.819 --> 00:06:50.819 Our third character this morning, his name is Pliny the Younger. 00:06:51.519 --> 00:06:55.259 He was governor in Bithynia in Asia Minor in AD 112. 00:06:56.139 --> 00:06:58.540 And he wrote to the emperor Trajan. 00:06:58.920 --> 00:07:02.439 And they were talking about how to deal with Christians and how to kill Christians. 00:07:02.779 --> 00:07:05.959 Because this is what the Roman Empire was dealing with at the time. 00:07:05.959 --> 00:07:13.419 Nero, when Rome burnt down in the early 60s AD, he blamed the cities burning down on Christians. 00:07:13.799 --> 00:07:14.839 They were the scapegoat. 00:07:16.479 --> 00:07:23.060 And Pliny was asking if you should kill all the people found to be Christians or just some of them. 00:07:24.079 --> 00:07:28.539 And so he explained that he made the Christians bow down to the statue of the emperor. 00:07:29.199 --> 00:07:34.419 He tried to make them curse Christ, which a genuine Christian cannot do. 00:07:34.420 --> 00:07:36.520 And writing further, he said this. 00:07:36.600 --> 00:07:42.080 He said that the Christians were in the habit of meeting on a certain fixed day before it was light. 00:07:42.720 --> 00:07:47.840 When they sang in alternate verse a hymn to Christ as to a God. 00:07:48.460 --> 00:07:53.180 And bound themselves to a solemn oath not to do any wicked deeds. 00:07:53.580 --> 00:08:02.980 And so Pliny very early records that people were gathering as a church, singing to Jesus, worshipping him as God. 00:08:02.980 --> 00:08:05.319 This is not something that comes a thousand years later. 00:08:05.740 --> 00:08:09.379 Worshipping Jesus as God is very, very, very early. 00:08:11.040 --> 00:08:14.360 And these Christians were seeking to live different lives. 00:08:16.360 --> 00:08:20.600 Binding themselves to solemn oaths not to do any wicked deeds. 00:08:21.060 --> 00:08:25.680 Worshipping Jesus as God and trying to live lives influenced by him. 00:08:25.680 --> 00:08:30.400 And so these He was executed around AD 30 by Pontius Pilate. 00:08:55.200 --> 00:08:58.220 And that Jesus was worshipped as God by his followers. 00:08:59.679 --> 00:09:02.399 Before we even move on to analysing 00:10:27.460 in the world who would argue that Jesus did not exist, I will eat a page of my Bible. 00:10:28.879 --> 00:10:29.879 He's already planned it out. 00:10:29.879 --> 00:10:32.720 He was going 00:10:46.860 Because there is incredible consensus within the academic world that Jesus was a real historical person. 00:10:49.039 --> 00:10:56.299 But even if Jesus was real, the Bible asks us to believe so much more than that he was a real person. 00:10:56.299 --> 00:11:02.099 The Bible asks us to believe that every decision we make should be influenced by this man. 00:11:02.719 --> 00:11:39.339 And so what we're going to do is we're going to assess the claims of the historical figures. 00:11:39.919 --> 00:11:42.159 And we're going to have a look at what the Bible says about 00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:00.079 It makes sense based on the historical documents. 00:12:01.079 --> 00:12:05.919 Not only that, but the evidence points to his exclusive claims being true too. 00:12:07.019 --> 00:12:09.120 The first book of the New Testament is called Matthew. 00:12:09.639 --> 00:12:12.359 A biography that focuses on the life of Jesus. 00:12:13.039 --> 00:12:15.239 It introduces us to a young woman called Mary. 00:12:15.240 --> 00:12:19.460 She's a young Jewish woman living in the first century in Jerusalem. 00:12:19.860 --> 00:12:22.639 And she was engaged to marry Joseph. 00:12:23.600 --> 00:12:28.120 But before they could be married, the author Matthew writes in chapter 1, verse 18, 00:12:28.120 --> 00:12:31.659 His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph. 00:12:32.220 --> 00:12:36.560 But before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 00:12:37.419 --> 00:12:46.039 Mary was told by an angel that her son Jesus was going to be the promised king who would reign on God's throne forever. 00:12:47.279 --> 00:12:49.600 Mary was understandably surprised. 00:12:50.759 --> 00:12:53.379 Matthew also tells us about Joseph and his response. 00:12:54.340 --> 00:12:57.000 Surprised is probably not the right word to use. 00:12:57.000 --> 00:13:01.320 When he found out that Mary was pregnant, he assumed the worst. are beginning to understand, just pursuing a career or romantic relationships or personal, individualistic truth or consuming things, 00:14:24.240 --> 00:14:30.360 it leads to drivenness and addictions and severe anxiety and obsessiveness and envy of others and then resentment. 00:14:30.360 --> 00:14:35.240 All of this drives us away from the God who made us. 00:14:36.159 --> 00:14:37.000
