looked at various texts in the Gospels describing the birth of Jesus Christ. 00:00:53.740 --> 00:01:00.960 And so we're at the beginning of the Gospel, and you can trace the story of God's Son, Jesus The first thing is a little bit harder to do, and that is to take your Christian faith out of the Victorian myth category. 00:01:31.799 --> 00:01:41.159 And hopefully we are not there, but where you somehow treat your Christian faith as a great heartwarming story 00:01:41.159 --> 00:01:46.599 that you pay attention to on a Sunday morning, a Sunday evening, and perhaps when you read the Bible at various stages. 00:01:46.739 --> 00:01:53.620 But where you carry on with your visceral, physical, flesh-and-blood life, well, there it's doggy-dog. 00:01:53.719 --> 00:01:55.899 There it is, a different set of rules that apply. 00:01:55.899 --> 00:02:01.239 And it's there that, well, decisions that I make there, well, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. 00:02:01.239 --> 00:02:04.519 But if you want to live a really rich life, 00:02:54.539 --> 00:03:02.620 where you're not just moving superficially through this created world, through the city, on the train, on your bicycle, at home, 00:03:02.939 --> 00:03:07.239 just dealing with immediate emotions, a desire for food, you're tired, you want to sleep, 00:03:07.639 --> 00:03:09.939 just dealing with physical, fleshy things, 00:03:10.079 --> 00:03:16.539 if you want to pursue, if you're not a Christian, you want to pursue a much richer, deeper experience of reality, 00:03:17.560 --> 00:03:20.599 the way to do that is to pay attention to the Word. 00:03:20.599 --> 00:03:28.799 It is the Word that can open up a world of richness to you with depth and with texture and with imagination 00:03:28.799 --> 00:03:37.919 and 00:04:52.220 --> 00:04:56.920 Let's look at the passage, and I hope I can show you how it fits together. 00:04:56.920 --> 00:04:59.439 Now, it is the temptation of Jesus Christ. 00:04:59.540 --> 00:05:10.960 And right from the off, we learn that Jesus had just finished his time in the wilderness that lasted for 40 days. 00:05:11.740 --> 00:05:12.600 40 days. 00:05:12.600 --> 00:05:19.040 And after this time in the desert of 40 days, something strange happens. 00:05:19.200 --> 00:05:25.420 Verse 3 tells us that the devil came and tempted him, asking, 00:05:25.800 --> 00:05:29.460 if you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread. 00:05:29.580 --> 00:05:31.439 Now, this is where it gets weird. 00:05:31.500 --> 00:05:33.720 And if you're not a Christian, you think, hang on, the devil? 00:05:34.420 --> 00:05:36.080 Are we, are you sure? 00:05:36.079 --> 00:05:40.899 I mean, it feels like I've slipped down a rabbit hole, and it's a fantasy novel. 00:05:41.019 --> whole story is based in history. 00:05:51.959 --> 00:05:57.360 We're getting mentions of Tiberius Caesar and Pontius Pilate and Herod the Tetrarch. 00:05:57.500 --> 00:05:59.120 You can date the things that's happened. 00:05:59.219 --> 00:06:01.299 It happened in real time, in real history. 00:06:01.759 --> 00:06:04.139 And whoa, all of a sudden, we're dealing with the devil. 00:06:04.139 --> 00:06:09.560 We're dealing with temptation and this strange business where Jesus goes from the wilderness 00:06:09.560 --> 00:06:12.680 to a mountaintop and then to the pinnacle of the temple. 00:06:12.680 --> 00:06:17.560 It feels like everything has just gone off track a little bit. 00:06:17.620 --> 00:06:22.860 And it's just suddenly spiritual, metaphysical, different reality all of a sudden. 00:06:24.240 --> 00:06:25.659 Please don't shut off. 00:06:25.779 --> 00:06:32.120 Don't take this passage that doesn't fit your neat, perhaps conservative, evangelical, rational world 00:06:32.120 --> 00:06:36.420 where you can look at historical facts and evidence for Jesus and fit it all together. 00:06:36.660 --> 00:06:42.879 It doesn't fit that neat world because it speaks of demons and devils and angels in a spiritual way 00:06:42.879 --> 00:06:44.980 that you find a little bit uncomfortable. 00:06:46.079 --> 00:06:47.199 Don't shut it down. 00:06:47.540 --> 00:06:53.660 No, do the hard work of bringing the spiritual and the physical together through the Word of God. 00:06:53.660 --> 00:06:56.260 It's Jesus that straddles this gap. 00:06:56.840 --> 00:07:00.540 And the clue is in the 40 days. 00:07:01.740 --> 00:07:09.620 You see, the 40 days mimics something or at least recapitulates something that happens in the Old Testament 00:07:09.620 --> 00:07:11.020 in a very real sense. 00:07:11.120 --> 00:07:18.680 It's the 40 years that God's first son, Israel, was in the wilderness. 00:07:18.680 --> 00:07:24.500 And you'll soon see that everything that happens with Jesus in this temptation 00:07:24.500 --> 00:07:30.560 is essentially a smaller, shorter, compacted version of everything that happened 00:07:30.560 --> 00:07:34.579 in flesh and blood history to Israel in the whole Old Testament. 00:07:34.720 --> 00:07:36.780 Yes, Israel was in the wilderness 40 years. 00:07:37.460 --> 00:07:39.540 Yes, Jesus in the wilderness 40 days. 00:07:40.579 --> 00:07:47.819 And then Israel, well, God met Moses on Mount Zion and there he gave him his Word. 00:07:47.819 --> 00:07:53.079 And whilst God was meeting with his church, with his people, with his first son Israel 00:07:53.079 --> 00:07:58.740 and making covenant with them from the mountaintop, well, the people were making a golden calf 00:07:58.740 --> 00:07:59.639 and worshiping it. 00:08:00.339 --> 00:08:04.360 But there's a mountaintop experience in Israel's history. 00:08:04.560 --> 00:08:08.339 They go from the wilderness to the mountain and from the mountain they eventually end up 00:08:08.339 --> 00:08:11.199 in the promised land and the temple. 00:08:11.199 --> 00:08:18.180 And that's where Jesus' temptation takes him next, to the temple, to the pinnacle of the temple. 00:08:19.620 --> 00:08:28.719 And so this is a clue that helps you to see that far from being simply spiritual, metaphysical, 00:08:28.879 --> 00:08:31.360 this whole thing that happened to Jesus when he's being tempted, 00:08:32.019 --> 00:08:35.879 it's actually something that's happened in flesh and blood real time 00:08:35.879 --> 00:08:40.539 to God's first son Israel in the whole Old Testament. 00:08:42.419 --> 00:08:47.639 And you've got to start seeing that there is a congruence between what happens in the physical realm 00:08:47.639 --> 00:08:49.759 to that which happens in the spiritual realm. 00:08:50.139 --> 00:08:53.379 There is a connection between these two things. 00:08:53.840 --> 00:08:54.299 Strange. 00:08:57.620 --> 00:08:59.059 It shouldn't surprise us, should it? 00:08:59.139 --> 00:09:01.799 Ephesians 6 says, put on the full armor of God 00:09:01.799 --> 00:09:05.039 so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 00:09:05.139 --> 00:09:07.639 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, 00:09:07.779 --> 00:09:10.279 against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world, 00:09:10.579 --> 00:09:14.419 and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:18.519 There is supposed to be a connection between the heavenly realms 00:09:18.519 --> 00:09:21.599 and this physical experience that we live in this world. 00:09:22.319 --> 00:09:25.759 And if you want to straddle the gap, you can finish that sentence by now. 00:09:26.479 --> 00:09:28.079 You need the word of God. 00:09:28.080 --> 00:09:31.960 That's exactly what Jesus came to do. 00:09:32.840 --> 00:09:34.180 He is the word in the flesh. 00:09:34.920 --> 00:09:37.040 And he's here to straddle that gap. 00:09:55.540 In the wilderness, on the mountaintop, and in the temple. 00:09:56.400 --> 00:09:57.120 He tempts Jesus. 00:09:57.120 --> 00:09:58.560 But why is he tempting Jesus? 00:10:01.360 --> 00:10:02.820 It's Hermann Barfing that said, 00:10:02.919 --> 00:10:05.500 The essence of the Christian religion consists in this, 00:10:05.620 --> 00:10:08.460 that the creation of the Father, ruined by sin, 00:10:09.279 --> 00:10:12.639 is restored in the death of the Son of God, 00:10:13.399 --> 00:10:15.620 is restored in the death of the Son of God, 00:10:15.960 --> 00:10:19.580 and recreated by the grace of the Holy Spirit 00:10:19.580 --> 00:10:21.360 into a kingdom of God. 00:10:21.360 --> 00:10:29.120 It's this mission that the devil was trying to stop. 00:10:29.460 --> 00:10:32.060 First in the first son, Israel. 00:10:32.180 --> 00:10:33.639 Before that, in Adam and Eve. 00:10:34.279 --> 00:10:35.560 And now in Jesus. 00:10:36.519 --> 00:10:39.000 And then in the New Testament church, 00:10:39.100 --> 00:10:40.600 the church that we live in now. 00:10:41.419 --> 00:10:44.580 He wants to stop this mission where God's creation, 00:10:44.580 --> 00:10:46.139 ruined by sin, 00:10:47.139 --> 00:10:50.780 that has been restored in the death of the Son of God. 00:10:50.879 --> 00:10:51.879 If Jesus did not die, 00:10:51.960 --> 00:10:53.500 the restoration would not have been possible. 00:10:53.500 --> 00:10:55.860 So the devil wants to stop this mission, 00:10:55.960 --> 00:10:56.540 this project. 00:10:57.020 --> 00:10:58.320 It would not have been possible, 00:10:58.320 --> 00:11:00.800 so that it can then not just be restored, 00:11:00.940 --> 00:11:03.940 but recreated by the grace of the Holy Spirit, 00:11:03.940 --> 00:11:06.580 as we build the kingdom of God. 00:11:08.800 --> 00:11:11.700 So the devil schemes as to interrupt this plan. 00:11:12.860 --> 00:11:15.160 And he tempts Jesus after 40 days in the desert, 00:11:15.740 --> 00:11:17.540 then on a mountaintop, 00:11:18.100 --> 00:11:20.040 and then on the top of the temple. 00:11:20.840 --> 00:11:23.520 And the heart of his temptation is a single question, 00:11:24.140 --> 00:11:25.660 if you are the Son of God. 00:11:25.740 --> 00:11:29.040 He asks this basic question about Jesus' identity. 00:11:30.680 --> 00:11:32.640 If you are the Son of God, do this. 00:11:32.639 --> 00:11:35.139 If you're not the Son of God, don't do this. 00:11:35.480 --> 00:11:37.080 If you are the Son of God, do this. 00:11:37.139 --> 00:11:38.419 But it's the Son of God, 00:11:38.539 --> 00:11:40.399 the identity of him as Son of God, 00:11:40.519 --> 00:11:44.679 that is where the real battle line lies. 00:11:46.500 --> 00:11:48.039 If you continue to read Luke 4, 00:11:48.659 --> 00:11:51.340 you'll see that Jesus then follows up this temptation 00:11:51.340 --> 00:11:54.720 with miracles that proves that he is the Son of God. 00:11:55.519 --> 00:11:56.399 He drives out demons, 00:11:57.100 --> 00:11:59.059 he heals the ill, the unwell, 00:11:59.439 --> 00:12:02.080 and he speaks with such authority 00:12:02.080 --> 00:12:03.240 that people start to say, 00:12:03.860 --> 00:12:04.320 hang on, 00:12:05.040 --> 00:12:06.680 this man is the Son of God. 00:12:07.480 --> 00:12:09.460 So the people start to recognize 00:12:09.460 --> 00:12:11.379 what the devil wanted to suppress, 00:12:12.259 --> 00:12:13.480 that which Jesus knew. 00:12:17.240 --> 00:12:18.420 So God's Word, 00:12:18.540 --> 00:12:19.920 God's Word, 00:12:20.580 --> 00:12:22.879 is that which helps us to straddle the gap 00:12:22.879 --> 00:12:24.660 between the spiritual and the physical, 00:12:25.220 --> 00:12:26.460 the heavenly and the earthly. 00:12:26.460 --> 00:12:29.379 But how does he do that? 00:12:32.740 --> 00:12:34.040 We read Luke 4, 00:12:34.160 --> 00:12:35.340 and the following thing happens. 00:12:35.460 --> 00:12:37.379 Jesus is in the temple, 00:12:38.740 --> 00:12:40.000 in the synagogue. 00:12:41.180 --> 00:12:43.080 And it's on the Sabbath day 00:12:43.080 --> 00:12:44.780 that he preaches. 00:12:46.540 --> 00:12:48.420 And in verse 17 we read, 00:12:48.519 --> 00:12:49.940 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah 00:12:49.940 --> 00:12:50.759 was given to him. 00:12:51.220 --> 00:12:52.360 He unrolled the scroll, 00:12:52.500 --> 00:12:53.820
