these, that we grieve the Spirit, that we affect the Holy Spirit, can lead us 00:06:25.180 --> 00:06:27.420 to hear things that are not in the text. 00:06:27.779 --> 00:06:30.819 So I want us just to slow down a little bit, and I want us to start there. 00:06:31.259 --> 00:06:35.180 Let's start there by talking about what this passage doesn't say. 00:06:35.180 --> 00:06:37.579 So if you want to passage, you read about the grieving of the Holy Spirit, 00:06:56.500 --> 00:07:00.720 and your mind immediately goes to Jesus' words about blaspheming the Spirit. 00:07:01.060 --> 00:07:04.560 And you start to get confused, and you think, oh no, I don't want to… 00:07:04.560 --> 00:07:05.839 Paul's saying don't blaspheme the Spirit. 00:07:05.899 --> 00:07:06.560 That's what he's saying. 00:07:06.699 --> 00:07:08.959 I don't want to get caught up in this, what did Jesus call it? 00:07:09.540 --> 00:07:11.819 Blaspheming was the unforgivable sin, right? 00:07:12.680 --> 00:07:15.579 Look with me at Mark chapter 3. 00:07:15.780 --> 00:07:17.079 These are Jesus' words. 00:07:17.600 --> 00:07:18.280 He says this, 00:07:18.279 --> 00:07:44.419 In Mark chapter 3, Jesus is speaking about a much different act towards the Holy Spirit 00:07:44.419 --> 00:07:46.919 than the grieving that Paul is talking about here. 00:07:46.920 --> 00:07:50.800 We're not going to consider Mark chapter 3 entirely this morning. 00:07:50.879 --> 00:07:52.680 I'm not going to do it justice. 00:07:53.000 --> 00:07:59.879 But you need to know that what Jesus was referring to here was a flagrant, willful, decisive judgment 00:07:59.879 --> 00:08:03.259 that the Spirit's testimony came from Satan. 00:08:03.819 --> 00:08:06.439 That the Spirit's testimony was untrue. 00:08:07.480 --> 00:08:13.439 Jesus is explaining that all those who have this persistent, unrepentant denial of the Holy Spirit 00:08:13.439 --> 00:08:15.259 will not experience forgiveness. 00:08:16.579 --> 00:08:21.500 The word that Jesus uses for blaspheming is entirely different. 00:08:21.959 --> 00:08:23.420 It has a different context. 00:08:23.540 --> 00:08:24.939 It was spoken by a different person. 00:08:25.079 --> 00:08:27.339 It comes from a different biblical author, 00:08:27.779 --> 00:08:32.620 and therefore it has a much different meaning than what Paul is talking about here in chapter 4. 00:08:32.620 --> 00:08:41.960 It's also worth noting that many Christians fear from Mark chapter 3 that they themselves might blaspheme the Spirit. 00:08:43.200 --> 00:08:47.879 This concern, this consideration actually shows a sensitivity to the Spirit, 00:08:48.080 --> 00:08:50.179 and it's evidence that you're not blaspheming the Spirit. 00:08:50.500 --> 00:08:53.340 So if that's in the back of your mind somewhere, please know that. 00:08:53.700 --> 00:08:56.500 Please know that if you're sensitive to blaspheming the Spirit, 00:08:56.680 --> 00:08:58.539 you're not choice, though, his word choice in Ephesians chapter 4 verse 30 00:09:08.639 --> 00:09:14.120 is one that means to be made sad, to be made sorrowful, 00:09:14.439 --> 00:09:17.519 to affect with grief or to make one uneasy. 00:09:18.439 --> 00:09:24.159 This definition, along with Paul's whole context, makes these very different ideas. 00:09:25.059 --> 00:09:27.399 Grieving is not blaspheming. 00:09:27.399 --> 00:09:30.000 Grieving is not blaspheming. 00:09:30.679 --> 00:09:34.299 As we grieve the Spirit, which Paul knows that we will, 00:09:34.559 --> 00:09:36.559 he anticipates it by talking about it, 00:09:36.740 --> 00:09:41.659 we are doing something very different than what Jesus spoke about in Mark chapter 3. 00:09:42.360 --> 00:09:45.659 Paul is not saying that grieving is blaspheming. 00:09:46.319 --> 00:09:51.840 The second thing that Paul is not saying is that we can affect our relationship with the Father. 00:09:52.259 --> 00:09:55.840 He's not saying that we can affect our relationship with the Father. 00:09:55.840 --> 00:10:00.040 We're going to talk a little bit more in a moment about our actions, 00:10:00.160 --> 00:10:02.600 both of our head and our hearts that grieve the Spirit, 00:10:03.019 --> 00:10:09.899 but we must first remove from our minds any idea that we can change or affect the standing that we have with the Father. 00:10:10.899 --> 00:10:15.220 Paul is not saying that we can affect our relationship with the Father. 00:10:15.220 --> 00:10:18.240 This is true for a number of reasons. 00:10:18.680 --> 00:10:23.420 The first is that the entire book of Ephesians so far doesn't support that idea. 00:10:23.920 --> 00:10:28.259 The entire book of Ephesians so far is founded upon, rooted in, 00:10:28.820 --> 00:10:32.540 the fact that we have received God's grace through Christ, 00:10:32.920 --> 00:10:34.940 and that we are eternally sealed by that. 00:10:34.940 --> 00:10:38.240 As Paul talks about us grieving the Spirit, 00:10:39.760 --> 00:10:43.900 it's not in contradiction to what he's talked about already about grace. 00:10:44.840 --> 00:10:47.340 Paul knows that we are sealed by the Father. 00:10:47.480 --> 00:10:49.940 We are forever sons and daughters, 00:10:50.080 --> 00:10:52.720 and there's nothing that we can do to change that relationship. 00:10:54.180 --> 00:10:58.100 There's also a biblical precedent for grieving the Holy Spirit. 00:10:59.400 --> 00:11:01.960 Paul had in mind Isaiah 63. 00:11:01.960 --> 00:11:04.860 It was in clear view when he wrote this passage, 00:11:04.960 --> 00:11:09.000 and in Isaiah 63, the people of God are described the exact same way, 00:11:09.060 --> 00:11:11.300 as grieving the Holy Spirit. 00:11:11.700 --> 00:11:14.600 They've grieved the Holy Spirit through their disobedience. 00:11:15.500 --> 00:11:20.320 It was this common pattern of God's people to return to their sin again and again, right? 00:11:21.560 --> 00:11:25.040 And the Scripture tells us that God was saddened, 00:11:25.519 --> 00:11:26.600 that He was sorrowful, 00:11:26.940 --> 00:11:30.240 that He grieved when the people of God returned to their sin. 00:11:30.240 --> 00:11:38.060 We can't miss the clear indication and the significance of the fact that our sins do affect the Father, 00:11:38.279 --> 00:11:40.940 but they do not affect our relationship with the Father. 00:11:41.779 --> 00:11:46.200 This description of rebelling against God in Isaiah is couched, however, 00:11:46.279 --> 00:11:49.919 you need to understand, between two declarations of God's
