00:01:13.379 And what these superheroes tend to do for us is they release us from the boredom of our ordinary lives. 00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:15.079 They excite us. 00:01:15.120 --> 00:01:16.120 They inspire us. 00:01:16.200 --> 00:01:19.280 They even scandal us with their falls from grace. 00:01:19.400 --> 00:01:20.500 They fascinate us. 00:01:20.500 --> 00:01:29.359 They give us relief by making our own faults and failings seem so small and excusable compared to their enormous ones. 00:01:30.299 --> 00:01:31.980 And the Bible has its heroes too. 00:01:33.099 --> 00:01:35.900 We're introduced to three of them in this text in front of us. 00:01:35.900 --> 00:01:42.900 But in turn, each one of these heroes points us to a greater hero. 00:01:42.900 --> 00:01:47.420 And in fact, the only true hero of the book of Judges. 00:01:47.640 --> 00:01:49.100 And that is God himself. 00:01:49.860 --> 00:01:56.660 And so, as I said at the beginning, we're exploring Judges 4 and 5 tonight. events, but coming at it from different angles, if you like. 00:02:10.180 --> 00:02:16.659 Chapter 4, which is what I just read, looks at the events from the perspective of a historian. 00:02:17.060 --> 00:02:18.840 It's a narrative, a historical narrative. 00:02:18.840 --> 00:02:27.740 Chapter 5 describes the same events that we've just read, but from the perspective of the poet or the of all, we're going to look at chapter 4 and be introduced to the ruler and the rescuers. 00:02:37.960 --> 00:02:42.659 Then in chapter 5, we're going to see who the true ruler rescuer is. 00:02:42.659 --> 00:02:49.560 And then the third point is what it means to live by faith in this ruler rescuer. 00:02:50.560 --> 00:02:52.960 Okay, so chapter 4, let's have a quick squiz at that. 00:02:53.579 --> 00:02:54.680 Get your Bibles open. 00:02:55.379 --> 00:03:01.800 At the beginning of chapter 4, we see the cycle that we were introduced to last week by Takeshi. 00:03:02.340 --> 00:03:04.340 It starts all over again, very simply. 00:03:04.859 --> 00:03:12.199 Again, the Israelites need evil in the eyes of the Lord now that Ehud was dead. 00:03:12.199 --> 00:03:19.979 So, one judge is dead and again, God's people commit evil in the eyes of the Lord. 00:03:20.639 --> 00:03:26.859 And their sin leads them to be oppressed by Jabin, king of Canaan. 00:03:27.759 --> 00:03:36.120 Now, ironically, this king would not even exist had Israel obeyed God back in chapter 1, 00:03:36.479 --> 00:03:39.699 when he said, go in and take the promised land and destroy him. 00:03:39.699 --> 00:03:42.919 This guy wouldn't even be there, but now he's oppressing God's people. 00:03:44.079 --> 00:03:51.599 And Jabin's main agent of oppression is this Sisera, his commander, his general. 00:03:52.619 --> 00:04:01.780 We're told in verse 3 that Sisera has 900 chariots fitted with iron at his disposal. 00:04:01.780 --> 00:04:06.500 And these things are the smart bombs and the drones of their time. 00:04:06.640 --> 00:04:10.219 This is military technology at its height. 00:04:11.180 --> 00:04:16.839 And we are told here that Sisera cruelly oppressed the Israelites for 20 years. 00:04:16.920 --> 00:04:19.860 This is the worst oppression that they have yet to face. 00:04:19.860 --> 00:04:28.259 And at the end of chapter 5, we get a measure of this man and how he treated people. 00:04:29.340 --> 00:04:34.800 In chapter 5, verses 28 and 29, Deborah, who will be introduced into a moment, 00:04:35.060 --> 00:04:43.560 pictures Sisera's mother and his mother's ladies-in-waiting, 00:04:43.560 --> 00:04:48.459 looking out for him to return victorious from his battle with the Israelites. 00:04:50.019 --> 00:04:55.319 And we learn from the discussion that they're having with each other while they're waiting for him to come back, 00:04:56.319 --> 00:05:03.759 that what Sisera likes to do is to steal women, rape them, and enslave them as his sex slaves. 00:05:03.759 --> 00:05:14.839 And they assume that he's taking his time coming back from the battle with Israel 00:05:14.839 --> 00:05:20.920 because he's in the process of taking more sex slaves for himself. 00:05:21.579 --> 00:05:23.480 He's in the business of raping women right now. 00:05:23.539 --> 00:05:24.519 That's why he's taking his time. 00:05:28.539 --> 00:05:31.579 It was so common knowledge, even his mother knows about it. 00:05:31.579 --> 00:05:34.859 Don't worry, he'll be home for dinner once he's done with the women. 00:05:37.039 --> 00:05:38.859 He was a cruel oppressor. 00:05:40.099 --> 00:05:46.479 And so it says Israel again cried out to the Lord for help, and God raises up Deborah. 00:05:46.839 --> 00:05:48.479 Now, Deborah is different from the other judges. 00:05:48.599 --> 00:05:49.500 First of all, she's a woman. 00:05:49.599 --> 00:05:51.399 She's the only woman judge. 00:05:52.360 --> 00:05:57.319 And secondly, she's described as a prophet in verse 4. 00:05:57.860 --> 00:05:59.259 Not a judge, but as a prophet. 00:05:59.259 --> 00:06:03.800 And as such, she preaches and teaches the word of God. 00:06:04.079 --> 00:06:08.659 And she does it in verse 6 when she says to Barak, 00:06:09.219 --> 00:06:11.959 the Lord, the God of Israel, commands you. 00:06:12.839 --> 00:06:17.120 That's her speaking prophecy over Barak's life. 00:06:18.300 --> 00:06:22.579 Verses 4 and 5 says that she was leading Israel and holding court. 00:06:22.719 --> 00:06:25.980 That is, Deborah was not a military leader. 00:06:25.980 --> 00:06:33.379 She was more like a modern-day judicial official. 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:37.740 Verse 5 says the Israelites went up to her to have their disputes decided. 00:06:38.060 --> 00:06:39.700 Kind of like a Judge Judy kind of thing. 00:06:40.259 --> 00:06:43.439 She was recognized as a wise counselor, as a judge. 00:06:43.580 --> 00:06:46.620 I'm not making that comparison with Judge Judy, by the way. 00:06:46.620 --> 00:06:54.879 People came to her to settle all sorts of social and legal and relational cases. 00:06:55.459 --> 00:07:01.519 Deborah led the people of Israel from wisdom and for character rather than just pure military might. 00:07:02.879 --> 00:07:08.560 She was also, interesting, the only judge who led beyond the battlefield. 00:07:08.560 --> 00:07:15.939 She didn't just lead them to release them from the oppressor, but she led Israel as a nation from beyond the battlefield. 00:07:16.720 --> 00:07:19.800 She is the savior who rules. 00:07:21.720 --> 00:07:23.360 She's more than just a rescuer. 00:07:23.500 --> 00:07:24.240 She's a ruler. 00:07:24.579 --> 00:07:28.879 In fact, they look to her to reshape society. 00:07:28.879 --> 00:07:41.980 And in that sense, Deborah is the one judge of all the judges who is the greatest pointer to the monarchy period, 00:07:42.199 --> 00:07:46.500 which comes straight after this book and which this book is leading to. 00:07:47.939 --> 00:07:50.459 She is the greatest pointer to that. 00:07:50.560 --> 00:07:56.040 She's the greatest pointer also in this book to the long-awaited Christ. 00:07:56.040 --> 00:08:00.600 You see, the Christ of whom Isaiah 9 says, 00:08:02.240 --> 00:08:09.600 he will bear the government on his shoulders and he's called wonderful counselor, prince of peace, 00:08:10.300 --> 00:08:14.140 establishing and upholding his kingdom with justice and righteousness. 00:08:15.780 --> 00:08:22.160 So right here in the heart of this book of battles and slayings, 00:08:22.160 --> 00:08:26.820 we see a, it's a subtle point, but it's a significant point. 00:08:28.300 --> 00:08:31.160 God's people don't just need a mighty rescuer. 00:08:31.900 --> 00:08:33.160 They don't just need a savior. 00:08:33.840 --> 00:08:35.259 They need a ruler. 00:08:35.519 --> 00:08:36.279 They need a king. 00:08:39.340 --> 00:08:44.899 This is something that Israel will get to the point where they cry out for, 00:08:44.899 --> 00:08:48.220 but it's also a significant point for us to grapple with now. 00:08:50.860 --> 00:08:55.379 All of these judges ultimately find their fulfillment in the person of Jesus. 00:08:56.019 --> 00:08:59.179 He is the Christ who Isaiah is referring to. 00:09:00.319 --> 00:09:06.579 So what happens when the modern day person wants to treat Jesus as rescuer but not ruler? 00:09:06.580 --> 00:09:09.400 And there are people who want to do that. 00:09:11.900 --> 00:09:16.000 What happens when you treat Jesus just as your rescuer but not as your ruler, 00:09:16.259 --> 00:09:18.500 just as your savior but not your king? 00:09:20.020 --> 00:09:21.620 The result is liberalism. 00:09:22.639 --> 00:09:23.879 It's called cheap grace. 00:09:24.520 --> 00:09:25.379 It's license. 00:09:25.960 --> 00:09:31.800 That is, the gospel of salvation in Jesus is just purely about the management of my sin. 00:09:31.879 --> 00:09:32.879 It's about dealing with my sin. 00:09:32.940 --> 00:09:33.940 It's not about anything else. 00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:34.420 Just sin. 00:09:34.419 --> 00:09:40.179 The gospel is about having my sins forgiven so that I can go to heaven. 00:09:40.659 --> 00:09:41.759 It's not about relationship with God. 00:09:41.860 --> 00:09:45.319 It's just primarily my sins forgiven so that I get to go to heaven. 00:09:45.699 --> 00:09:48.399 So I don't get to suffer consequences for my sin. 00:09:48.699 --> 00:09:51.699 And so the thinking is, providing I've asked Jesus to forgive me, 00:09:51.759 --> 00:09:53.379 I've asked him into my heart and he's forgiven me. 00:09:53.979 --> 00:09:55.079 I get to go to heaven. 00:09:55.959 --> 00:10:00.019 It doesn't really matter how I live because he's in the business of forgiving me. 00:10:00.059 --> 00:10:00.899 So he's going to do that. 00:10:00.899 --> 00:10:05.620 I've got this get out of jail free or get out of hell free card. 00:10:05.620 --> 00:10:12.959 And I don't need to do anything about spiritual disciplines or radical generosity or anything like that. 00:10:13.720 --> 00:10:15.720 Because Jesus is my savior. 00:10:15.720 --> 00:10:29.800 On the other hand, if we treat Jesus as my lord, my ruler, and not my savior and my rescuer, the result is the opposite. 00:10:29.940 --> 00:10:30.660 It's legalism. 00:10:30.659 --> 00:10:33.699 It's a life obeying the rules. 00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:34.679 Obeying the rules. 00:10:34.819 --> 00:10:42.100 Not totally confident whether I've actually got out of jail for free at all because I'm not sure where I stand. arrogance and judgmentalism and a religious spirit upon everyone else who does not live up to my standard. 00:10:58.100 --> 00:11:04.800 And you can sit on this side and use all the language of Zion. 00:11:04.899 --> 00:11:07.620 You can lose all the language of righteousness. 00:11:10.019 --> 00:11:13.960 And you'll not have a life or a heart of righteousness. 00:11:15.820 --> 00:11:18.960 Jesus must be both liberator and lord. 00:11:19.600 --> 00:11:21.379 He must be rescuer and ruler. 00:11:21.379 --> 00:11:36.620 What's interesting in this text is that Deborah is not the one who, in God's strength, rescues Israel by defeating its oppressor. 00:11:37.360 --> 00:11:43.039 She's the ruler, but we have two other rescuers here. 00:11:43.759 --> 00:11:47.360 And so she sends Barak in chapter 4, verse 6. 00:11:47.360 --> 00:11:51.860 He will lead the battle against God's enemies. 00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:56.220 And Barak's name means lightning. 00:11:57.680 --> 00:11:59.320 I mean, that's awesome, isn't it? 00:11:59.340 --> 00:12:00.620 That's the guy you want to pick. 00:12:01.180 --> 00:12:04.720 The guy with the name lightning or crusher or something like that. 00:12:05.159 --> 00:12:06.680 So here we have Captain Lightning. 00:12:07.440 --> 00:12:09.340 He's the hero of the story. 00:12:09.440 --> 00:12:13.420 Although he doesn't seem to fit when you read verse 8. 00:12:13.419 --> 00:12:17.500 Barak said to Deborah, if you go with me, I will go. 00:12:17.599 --> 00:12:19.240 But if you don't go with me, I won't go. 00:12:20.419 --> 00:12:22.839 So maybe Captain Lightning's not quite appropriate. 00:12:23.799 --> 00:12:27.360 Captain Sissy Pants or something like that might be more appropriate for him. 00:12:28.599 --> 00:12:33.740 He refuses to go into battle unless Deborah comes with him. 00:12:33.740 --> 00:12:40.320 Now, he appears at this point to have a timid lack of faith. 00:12:41.060 --> 00:12:44.060 And maybe there is an element of wavering there for him. 00:12:45.379 --> 00:12:50.820 But he seems to simply refuse to trust and obey the word that came from God. 00:12:51.279 --> 00:12:56.539 And in fact, when you read verse 9, it appears to confirm that conclusion. 00:12:57.539 --> 00:12:58.519 Deborah says to him, 00:12:58.519 --> 00:13:12.240 Barak then summons the troops. 00:13:13.860 --> 00:13:15.879 He prepares to fight. 00:13:17.159 --> 00:13:19.360 But only because Deborah is with him. 00:13:19.360 --> 00:13:22.519 And it's not until verse 14, 00:13:23.259 --> 00:13:28.360 after Sisera has gathered his awesome war machine down by the river 00:13:28.360 --> 00:13:31.860 and Deborah has told Barak to go, 00:13:32.820 --> 00:13:35.899 that Barak charges down Mount Tabor with his men. 00:13:37.100 --> 00:13:41.820 The honour for the victory is still withheld from Barak, however, 00:13:42.340 --> 00:13:46.539 because of his lack of obedient, radical faith in verse 8. 00:13:46.539 --> 00:13:53.259 That's the pessimistic way to read this text. 00:13:54.699 --> 00:14:01.419 There is a number of commentators land on it that way. 00:14:03.079 --> 00:14:06.759 I think there is a more optimistic way to read it. hillside 00:14:37.360 --> 00:14:43.940 into the teeth of 900 iron chariots 00:14:43.940 --> 00:14:46.800 and you're not going to get the honour for it. 00:14:48.060 --> 00:14:49.159 You okay with with him, 00:15:15.019 --> 00:15:16.960 not because he's a coward, 00:15:18.419 --> 00:15:20.899 not because he's unfaithful, 00:15:20.899 --> 00:15:25.980 but out of recognition that Deborah is the leader of God's people 00:15:25.980 --> 00:15:29.179 and she leads through wisdom by speaking the word of God. 00:15:30.740 --> 00:15:36.699 The command from Deborah to Barak came from God 00:15:36.699 --> 00:15:39.279 and he wants to make sure 00:15:39.279 --> 00:15:41.879 that he's got the word of God with him 00:15:41.879 --> 00:15:43.579 right there, right then 00:15:43.579 --> 00:15:45.579 to go when he's told to go. 00:15:45.580 --> 00:15:49.860 He wants to make sure 00:15:49.860 --> 00:15:51.280 that he's got a godly woman there 00:15:51.280 --> 00:15:52.960 who speaks the word of God. 00:15:55.660 --> 00:15:57.420 And we see that in verse 14. 00:15:57.540 --> 00:16:00.280 As soon as Deborah tells Barak to attack, 00:16:00.540 --> 00:16:01.540 he does it 00:17:06.379 And it's so embarrassing 00:17:06.379 --> 00:17:07.639 when we've got to point it out to them 00:17:07.639 --> 00:17:08.500 in subtle ways. 00:17:08.500 --> 00:17:14.180 He obeys God and leads his men 00:17:14.180 --> 00:17:16.240 knowing that the victory will be given to another. 00:17:17.240 --> 00:17:18.660 And when it's all over, 00:17:18.839 --> 00:17:19.900 it's done and dusted, 00:17:52.539 --> 00:17:53.659 something to be grasped, 00:17:53.759 --> 00:17:55.740 something to be used for his own purpose, 00:17:55.859 --> 00:17:57.919 for a display of his own glory, 00:17:58.419 --> 00:18:00.339 but made himself nothing, 00:18:01.219 --> 00:18:03.459 humbled himself and became obedient to death, 00:18:03.460 --> 00:18:05.480 even death on a cross. 00:18:08.019 --> 00:18:09.799 And so Barak descends the mountain, 00:18:11.319 --> 00:18:12.400 Sisera flees, 00:18:13.100 --> 00:18:14.920 all that needs to happen now 00:18:14.920 --> 00:18:16.519 is for Barak
