Last Sunday we looked at Psalm 59. David wrote Psalm 00:00:18.440 --> 00:00:25.100 59 about the time when Saul, King Saul, had sent men to watch his house in order to kill him. 00:00:25.100 --> 00:00:33.460 A very desperate time for David. He was feeling very unsettled and troubled with things that were 00:00:33.460 --> 00:00:39.740 going on and we saw how he responded in the midst of that situation and how he called out to the Lord 00:00:39.740 --> 00:00:47.780 for help. Well, this morning Psalm is written a little later in the story. From that moment, 00:00:47.780 --> 00:00:56.120 David escaped out the window. God delivered him from his enemies and he was on the run. He went to the 00:00:56.120 --> 00:01:02.400 first place that he could probably think of that he could trust someone. He went to Samuel, the Lord's 00:01:02.400 --> 00:01:11.500 prophet in a small town called Ramah. And while he was there, probably sought the Lord through Samuel. 00:01:11.500 --> 00:01:20.659 But it wasn't long before King Saul figured out where David was and sent men and almost captured 00:01:20.659 --> 00:01:27.900 him except the Lord intervened again and delivered David from his hands. From there, David kind of snuck 00:01:27.900 --> 00:01:38.400 back into the city where Saul was and met with Jonathan, the king's son and David's best friend. And what he 00:01:38.400 --> 00:01:45.800 heard there only confirmed his suspicion that Saul was out to get him, that he was bent on taking his 00:01:45.800 --> 00:01:55.400 life. And so with men watching his house and only the clothes on his back, he made the decision to 00:01:55.400 --> 00:02:04.120 leave town and to go on the run. He went to a small town called Nob and ran into a priest there named 00:02:04.120 --> 00:02:11.879 Ahimelech. He asked for some provision, some food and a sword. And it wasn't long before David realized 00:02:11.879 --> 00:02:18.879 that no matter where he went, somebody was going to recognize him. Somebody would know him. And Saul 00:02:18.879 --> 00:02:24.500 was going to find out sooner or later that he was there. Not only would his life be in danger, but the 00:02:24.500 --> 00:02:32.240 lives of the people that were helping him would be in danger as well. And so David decided to go to the 00:02:32.240 --> 00:02:41.879 one place where Saul would never go after him. He went into Philistine territory. He went to the city 00:02:41.879 --> 00:02:50.600 of Gath, the territory of the enemy. He went to Achish, the king of Gath. And we don't really know 00:02:50.600 --> 00:02:56.980 exactly what David was thinking in doing that, but we can only guess that he must have felt desperate. 00:02:56.979 --> 00:03:10.039 Not safe anywhere in Israel. Perhaps hoping to make a bit of a play onto the king's good side in Gath 00:03:10.039 --> 00:03:16.879 there as somebody who's defecting or, you know, shares the enemy of King Saul with him. Hopefully to 00:03:16.879 --> 00:03:26.399 find a place that's safe for the time being. But David's plan, unfortunately, backfires a little bit. 00:03:26.400 --> 00:03:35.439 And they recognize him there too. Some of Achish's servants and advisors, they say, isn't this the guy 00:03:35.439 --> 00:03:43.740 that they sang and danced to the song where they were singing, Saul has slain his thousands and David 00:03:43.740 --> 00:03:51.540 his tens of thousands? We can't have this guy here. And of course, David's tens of thousands, many of 00:03:51.539 --> 00:04:00.340 those thousands were Philistines. And so it says that David ended up in their hands. Or as the 00:04:00.340 --> 00:04:08.639 superscription of our psalm this morning, Psalm 56 says, the Philistines seized him in Gath. So last 00:04:08.639 --> 00:04:17.680 Sunday, we saw as everything fell apart for David back in his own home country. But this morning, we see 00:04:17.680 --> 00:04:25.019 that things have gone from bad to worse. Now he's in enemy territory and they know who he is and what 00:04:25.019 --> 00:04:33.019 he's done and they have him in their custody. And it was about this time that David wrote this psalm, 00:04:33.340 --> 00:04:36.240 this prayer. Let me read it for you. 00:04:36.240 --> 00:04:48.000 Be merciful to me, my God, for my enemies are in hot pursuit. All day long they press their attack. 00:04:49.079 --> 00:04:55.860 My adversaries pursue me all day long in their pride. joyfully. 00:08:53.720 --> 00:08:56.200 But things have gone from bad to worse. 00:08:56.860 --> 00:09:04.020 And we get the sense here that the tears and misery and fear are now the norm for David.
