recruiting enough women to be engineers. 00:06:17.060 --> 00:06:19.819 This obviously was a result of dreadful oppression 00:06:19.819 --> 00:06:22.019 and abysmal behavior, 00:06:22.360 --> 00:06:25.420 but not many women are showing up to be engineers. 00:06:25.660 --> 00:06:27.740 It didn't occur to the author of this article. 00:06:28.259 --> 00:06:30.899 There may be some women who don't choose to be engineers, 00:06:31.459 --> 00:06:35.159 but it became an issue about the identity of women. 00:06:35.160 --> 00:06:40.840 That example could be reproduced thousands of times, 00:06:41.000 --> 00:06:43.800 not just about gender issues, race issues, whatever. 00:06:46.360 --> 00:06:50.920 And I want to try and explain to you very briefly today 00:06:50.920 --> 00:06:57.860 two reasons why it is that identity has become such a critical issue. 00:06:58.980 --> 00:07:02.220 And part of the reason it has become a critical issue, 00:07:02.220 --> 00:07:06.340 almost an obsession is partly due to the fact 00:07:06.340 --> 00:07:10.240 that it has been given a free ride on social media. 00:07:11.660 --> 00:07:15.900 So here are two reasons why we're obsessed with identity today. 00:07:16.340 --> 00:07:21.760 One is called, a philosophical concept called determinism. 00:07:23.520 --> 00:07:29.180 That is, everything you are is buried in your past, 00:07:29.180 --> 00:07:33.500 and they're all external factors. 00:07:33.660 --> 00:07:36.879 So they could be disadvantages 00:07:36.879 --> 00:07:41.400 that are perceived to be disadvantages in today's culture. 00:07:41.939 --> 00:07:46.079 Could be to do that you had awful parenting when you were a child. 00:07:46.899 --> 00:07:49.199 Could be to do with your genetics. 00:07:50.519 --> 00:07:54.180 It could be to do with the fact that you came from a household 00:07:54.180 --> 00:07:59.560 which had no educational aspiration and no money. 00:08:01.300 --> 00:08:03.639 Could be to do with any of these things. 00:08:03.920 --> 00:08:07.180 But the big deal is, who you are is not your fault. 00:08:08.500 --> 00:08:12.579 All to do with external factors that happened to you in the past. 00:08:12.819 Kimberley Crenshaw, 1985, 00:08:55.500 --> 00:08:56.679 developed this theory. 00:08:57.440 --> 00:08:58.779 And the theory is this. 00:09:00.139 --> 00:09:06.279 That certain people suffer from serious disadvantages in our culture. 00:09:07.299 --> 00:09:09.500 What intersectionality does is 00:09:09.500 --> 00:09:12.680 it kind of creates a sort of grid, a matrix, 00:09:12.679 --> 00:09:15.679 whereby all those factors are factored in. 00:09:16.859 --> 00:09:21.919 So, I'm not trying to parody any particular kind of person here, 00:09:22.019 --> 00:09:25.459 but if you are black, 00:09:25.979 --> 00:09:27.979 if you are a person of colour, 00:09:28.239 --> 00:09:30.779 if you are a woman, 00:09:31.079 --> 00:09:34.039 if you are a white heterosexual male, 00:09:34.539 --> 00:09:35.939 if you are a lesbian, 00:09:36.179 --> 00:09:36.879 if you are gay, 00:09:36.879 --> 00:09:37.559 all that, 00:09:39.600 --> 00:09:40.320 we're told, 00:09:41.259 --> 00:09:43.240 creates disadvantage in your life. 00:09:43.320 --> 00:09:45.259 And what intersectionality does is 00:09:45.259 --> 00:09:47.159 it kind of gives you a score 00:09:47.159 --> 00:09:49.659 on how disadvantaged you are. 00:09:51.700 --> 00:09:52.779 And of course, 00:09:53.039 --> 00:09:54.960 there's an element of truth in all that. 00:09:56.039 --> 00:09:57.820 But there are some things in 00:10:20.940 --> 00:10:22.460 but if taken to an extreme, 00:10:22.800 --> 00:10:24.680 can become extremely not good. 00:10:26.139 --> 00:10:26.620 Loyalty. 00:10:28.120 --> 00:10:29.940 Loyalty is really important. 00:10:29.940 --> 00:10:29.980 It's important. 00:10:31.200 --> 00:10:32.940 It's important in organizations. 00:10:33.260 --> 00:10:34.360 It's important in marriages. 00:10:35.560
