00:06:25.759 It's reliable. 00:06:27.600 --> 00:06:29.639 And it's written by an eyewitness. 00:06:31.439 --> 00:06:36.000 Matthew, who wrote this, would witness the resurrected Jesus himself. 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:42.259 And so let's start in this account in the setting of the scene in verse 1. 00:06:43.819 --> 00:06:49.839 Now, after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 00:06:50.939 --> 00:06:53.579 Matthew, who wrote this, is being very clear. 00:06:53.720 --> 00:07:00.120 He's adamant that he wants you and me to know as readers what day of the week this is. 00:07:00.120 --> 00:07:04.639 And the reason why is because of something Jesus said. 00:07:05.459 --> 00:07:14.500 Now, if you're not familiar with the kind of Jewish tradition and understanding of a week, the Sabbath was their Saturday. 00:07:15.680 --> 00:07:22.240 So if you remember Genesis chapter 1, God created all things in six days and on the seventh he rested. 00:07:22.240 --> 00:07:31.680 And so from there, the Jewish people would observe that seventh day as the last day of the week in which they would rest from their labor. 00:07:35.040 --> 00:07:38.680 But why is Matthew telling us this? 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:42.660 Why does he want us to know that it's now the first day of the week? 00:07:42.780 --> 00:07:44.100 It's Sunday, not Saturday. 00:07:45.579 --> 00:07:48.139 Well, it's something that Jesus had said repeatedly. 00:07:48.139 --> 00:07:49.740 In fact, he predicted something. 00:07:50.019 --> 00:07:51.780 More like prophesied something. 00:07:52.240 --> 00:07:58.400 So in Matthew 16, 17 and 20, Jesus tells his disciples, he says to them, 00:07:58.500 --> 00:08:04.019 when we get to Jerusalem, I'm going to be handed over to the elders and chief priests of the Jews. 00:08:04.699 --> 00:08:06.319 And they will kill me. 00:08:07.139 --> 00:08:09.439 And then on the third day, I'll be raised. 00:08:11.220 --> 00:08:11.780 Repeatedly. 00:08:13.259 --> 00:08:17.840 And so what Matthew is doing here is he's saying, it's that day. 00:08:19.720 --> 00:08:20.900 It's the third day. 00:08:22.699 --> 00:08:24.379 It's the day that he was talking about. 00:08:26.300 --> 00:08:31.660 Now, the chief priests and the elders who were enemies of Jesus, they knew of these prophecies as well. 00:08:32.019 --> 00:08:43.379 That's why in Matthew 27, 62 through 66, they deploy a unit of soldiers to the grave to seal the stone on the tomb and say, 00:08:43.379 --> 00:08:44.460 off limits to everybody. 00:08:44.460 --> 00:08:48.860 They're trying to keep people out of the tomb from the disciples from stealing the body. 00:08:50.700 --> 00:08:53.000 So they knew about these prophecies. 00:08:53.000 --> 00:09:03.519 If you're not familiar with this account, three days earlier, Jesus Christ was crucified on a Roman cross. 00:09:04.519 --> 00:09:10.460 He was dead and his corpse was laid in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. 00:09:10.460 --> 00:09:21.860 And if you're familiar with the story, you know that all of his male disciples, they either betrayed him, denied him, or deserted him. 00:09:21.860 --> 00:09:30.320 But there was a handful of female followers of Jesus that were at the crucifixion that they saw where his body was laid. 00:09:30.320 --> 00:09:38.660 And two of them, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, are spoken of in verse 1. 00:09:38.780 --> 00:09:41.000 They are on their way to the tomb. 00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:49.419 We know from other gospel accounts that they're on their way to the tomb in order to finish anointing Jesus' body for burial. 00:09:49.720 --> 00:09:50.860 So let me ask you this. 00:09:52.879 --> 00:10:03.519 If you were in the minds of these two Marys, what were you expecting to find when you reached the tomb? 00:10:04.799 --> 00:10:08.779 You would be expecting to find the corpse of Jesus Christ. 00:10:08.779 --> 00:10:11.279 Do you know why? 00:10:13.100 --> 00:10:20.740 Because we all know that dead people who've been dead for days stay dead. 00:10:22.279 --> 00:10:26.299 They're expecting to find the corpse of Jesus. 00:10:29.019 --> 00:10:37.679 But what they were expecting, what actually happened, was a surprise. 00:10:38.779 --> 00:10:42.279 It's something else actually happened. 00:10:42.419 --> 00:10:45.079 And we start picking it up in verses 2 through 7. 00:10:45.199 --> 00:10:47.240 There's this surprise. 00:10:49.360 --> 00:10:51.339 Mary, Mary, we're not expecting this. 00:10:52.419 --> 00:10:53.839 An angelic surprise. 00:10:54.339 --> 00:10:58.459 And there's a number of things I want you to see that make this so surprising. 00:10:59.259 --> 00:11:00.539 The first is the entrance. 00:11:00.779 --> 00:11:04.679 It is a seismic entrance by this angel. 00:11:04.679 --> 00:11:07.839 And behold, there was a great earthquake. 00:11:09.839 --> 00:11:16.039 An earthquake precedes the arrival of this angel. 00:11:17.379 --> 00:11:18.419 That's a big deal. 00:11:19.639 --> 00:11:23.019 I didn't walk into this building and there was an earthquake this morning. 00:11:23.019 --> 00:11:29.840 But let's not miss why this angel is here. 00:11:30.480 --> 00:11:35.579 He's there to make the most surprising announcement in the history of the world. 00:11:39.199 --> 00:11:45.960 You know, any kind of human event with seismic activity around it is going to be extraordinary and memorable. 00:11:46.199 --> 00:11:46.799 Wouldn't you agree? 00:11:46.799 --> 00:11:52.500 Three days earlier, remember Jesus is hanging on the cross. 00:11:53.379 --> 00:11:55.979 He says, Eloi, Eloi, Lameis Epictone. 00:11:56.219 --> 00:11:58.139 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? 00:11:58.659 --> 00:12:00.359 He gives up his spirit. 00:12:03.079 --> 00:12:06.779 The temple, the curtain is torn in two from top to bottom. 00:12:06.919 --> 00:12:08.000 And then there's an earthquake. 00:12:08.000 --> 00:12:12.679 He breathes his last. 00:12:14.000 --> 00:12:15.419 And there's an earthquake. 00:12:17.419 --> 00:12:22.419 Could it be that here in Matthew chapter 28 verse 2, 00:12:23.440 --> 00:12:28.799 that that earthquake is at the breathing of his first? 00:12:28.799 --> 00:12:38.740 And with that comes the attending of an angel to announce that he, 00:12:39.959 --> 00:12:41.519 well, something surprising has happened. 00:12:45.240 --> 00:12:49.919 This angel arrives with seismic fanfare. 00:12:50.719 --> 00:12:54.199 And he rolls away the stone, just blows through the seal. 00:12:54.859 --> 00:12:56.559 He doesn't care who seals on this. 00:12:56.559 --> 00:13:01.299 And then he sits on the top of the stone, which was massive. 00:13:02.219 --> 00:13:05.699 No man or men
