he finds himself in this crisis point. 00:00:20.940 --> 00:00:28.019 He's lost all of his money, he's far from home, he's fighting with the pigs in the pigsty for the food. 00:00:28.019 --> 00:00:35.380 He's buried the most dishonorable place that a Jewish boy could ever find himself. 00:00:35.880 --> 00:00:37.500 And he thinks of his father. 00:00:38.359 --> 00:00:44.239 And as a filmmaker, I want you to sort of hone in on this because the Bible passage goes on and it says, 00:00:44.359 --> 00:00:47.379 he imagines his return and he would say to his father, 00:00:47.799 --> 00:00:53.679 Father, I've sinned against heaven and before you, I'm no longer worthy to be called your son, treat me as your hired servant. 00:00:53.679 --> 00:01:00.780 But I wonder if in a filmmaking, they might pause there and maybe he might sit there and think, 00:01:00.979 --> 00:01:04.539 would my father even receive me? 00:01:05.879 --> 00:01:10.120 Can I ever go home even as a servant? 00:01:12.579 --> 00:01:16.780 Somehow as a filmmaker, we'd want to think, how do we capture his fear? 00:01:16.780 --> 00:01:26.680 That as he walked up to the door, the father might turn his that the prophet Isaiah is speaking to in the passage that we're going to look at this morning. 00:02:58.719 --> 00:03:03.139 We are in a summer series on the book of Isaiah, chapters 40 through 55. We're going to start in Isaiah 42, verse 18. 00:03:14.159 --> 00:03:18.699 And we'll look through chapter 43, verse 21. 00:03:18.819 --> 00:03:19.939 So we're looking at a big chunk. 00:03:20.159 --> 00:03:23.479 We're going to look at it in sections, so we're not going to read it all up front. 00:03:23.579 --> 00:03:26.039 We're going to look at it piecemeal along the way. 00:03:26.780 --> people. 00:03:34.840 --> 00:03:40.900 Isaiah is writing to a people, giving them a word of hope. 00:03:41.080 --> 00:03:44.719 A word of hope that, in fact, God may redeem His people. 00:03:47.180 --> God's redeemed. 00:04:57.060 --> 00:05:03.240 So, the people that God redeems is what we see at the end of Isaiah chapter 42. 00:05:03.540 --> 00:05:06.019 So, let's read those verses together. 00:05:07.680 --> 00:05:09.980 Isaiah 42, starting in verse 18. 00:05:09.980 --> 00:05:14.640 Hear, you deaf, and look, you blind, that you may see. 00:05:15.759 --> 00:05:17.780 Who is blind but My servant? 00:05:18.020 --> 00:05:20.740 Or deaf as My messenger whom I send? 00:05:21.420 --> 00:05:24.140 Who is blind as My dedicated one? 00:05:24.180 --> 00:05:26.220 Or blind as the servant of the Lord? 00:05:26.920 --> 00:05:30.800 He sees many things, but does not observe them. 00:05:30.980 --> 00:05:34.100 His ears are open, but He does not hear. 00:05:34.100 --> 00:05:40.840 The Lord was pleased for His righteousness' sake to magnify His law and make it glorious. 00:05:41.640 --> 00:05:44.040 But this is a people plundered and looted. 00:05:44.480 --> 00:05:47.920 They are all of them It burned Him up, but He did not take it to heart. 00:06:33.280 --> 00:06:39.080 So, in this passage, Isaiah is turning his attention towards the people of Israel, 00:06:39.560 --> 00:06:45.900 the people who God is redeeming, and He describes them in a very unflattering picture. 00:06:46.800 --> 00:06:47.120 Right? 00:06:47.460 --> 00:06:51.340 As we walk through this, what does He say about the people God redeems? 00:06:51.339 --> 00:06:56.719 Well, in verses 19 and 20, it says, they are blind and deaf. 00:06:57.339 --> 00:06:58.699 He starts with verse 18. 00:06:58.819 --> 00:06:59.379 He's calling… 00:06:59.379 --> 00:07:02.839 In verse 18, He's calling the nations, hey, come, come nations. 00:07:02.979 --> 00:07:05.759 Come and look and see what Israel has done. 00:07:06.279 --> 00:07:10.679 You who are blind and deaf because you don't know us, come and see Israel. 00:07:11.519 --> 00:07:13.719 But you know what you're going to see when you look at them? 00:07:13.839 --> 00:07:15.039 They're no different than you. 00:07:15.299 --> 00:07:17.599 They too are blind and deaf. 00:07:17.600 --> 00:07:27.320 They are no longer able or willing to hear your voice, to hear God's voice, to see God's hand. 00:07:28.700 --> 00:07:33.180 And if you've been here for a couple of weeks, you might be confused because in this passage, 00:07:33.300 --> 00:07:39.800 He describes Israel, this blind and deaf, this disobedient people, as my servant. 00:07:39.800 --> 00:07:45.259 And if you were here last week, you remember Nick preached in the beginning of chapter 42 00:07:45.259 --> 00:07:48.840 that my servant seemed like the great hope of Israel. 00:07:49.060 --> 00:07:52.560 And here we see the servant is the great failure of Israel. 00:07:52.699 --> 00:07:53.939 So how do we understand this? 00:07:54.020 --> 00:07:55.540 Well, here's the picture. 00:07:56.139 --> 00:08:00.420 God here is speaking of Israel as a nation, as His covenant people. 00:08:00.860 --> 00:08:05.199 You are my servant because I've called you to be my people and to serve me in the world. 00:08:05.199 --> 00:08:08.060 But you have failed and you will continue to fail. 00:08:08.360 --> 00:08:10.279 And so you need a greater servant. 00:08:10.459 --> 00:08:12.120 You need one who's going to come later. 00:08:12.639 --> 00:08:17.259 You need the servant of the beginning of chapter 1 verses… 00:08:17.259 --> 00:08:20.300 Or the beginning of chapter 42 verses 1 through 7. 00:08:20.659 --> 00:08:27.240 A servant who really will obey, who really will bring justice, who really will live out righteousness. 00:08:27.839 --> 00:08:31.079 And so there's this contrast in Isaiah and there are two different servants. 00:08:31.079 --> 00:08:37.000 And whenever you see that word, you'll want to spend some time discerning which one is being referred to in this place. 00:08:37.379 --> 00:08:41.240 What is the connotation of servant in each of these contexts? 00:08:41.939 --> 00:08:46.259 So, as we're reading with Isaiah, there's your little Bible study note for the week. 00:08:47.319 --> 00:08:52.079 What Isaiah is focusing on here at the end of chapter 42 is that Isaiah… 00:08:52.620 --> 00:08:56.079 That God's people Israel are disobedient. 00:08:56.939 --> 00:08:58.360 They are blind and deaf. 00:08:58.360 --> 00:09:03.379 And there in verses 21 and 22 it says, you are supposed to hear. 00:09:03.460 --> 00:09:09.800 You are supposed to hear God's law and then live it out in a way to display God's glory to the world. 00:09:10.500 --> 00:09:12.480 But instead you turned away. 00:09:15.200 --> 00:09:21.019 Rather than being the glory of God, they have suffered under the judgment of God. 00:09:21.100 --> 00:09:24.300 And they're scattered with no one to rescue them. 00:09:24.299 --> 00:09:28.759 That's what the nations see because Israel is scattered. 00:09:31.359 --> 00:09:34.779 And this is what we see in verses 23 through 25 as well. 00:09:35.139 --> 00:09:40.979 Because not only has God judged His people, but they continue in their unrepentant hearts. 00:09:42.419 --> 00:09:45.859 And for those of you who are new here and if you've forgotten the history, 00:09:46.259 --> 00:09:52.099 part of what's happening here is Isaiah's preaching in the early 600 B.C. 00:09:52.100 --> 00:09:56.840 So, what has happened is the northern kingdom has already fallen to a nation called Assyria 00:09:56.840 --> 00:09:59.080 because of their disobedience to the Lord. 00:09:59.180 --> 00:10:02.700 So, the southern kingdom that Isaiah is preaching to has seen that. 00:10:03.519 --> 00:10:09.120 And then Isaiah here in this section is looking ahead to a second conquering of God's people 00:10:09.120 --> 00:10:16.440 when the nation of Babylon is going to come and ruin Jerusalem and take people away into captivity. 00:10:16.440 --> 00:10:17.440 It's called the exile. 00:10:17.440 --> 00:10:25.520 And so, he's preaching ahead to those people who have seen the final destruction of the nation of Israel, 00:10:25.740 --> 00:10:28.980 of the capital Jerusalem, of the temple being destroyed. 00:10:29.160 --> 00:10:30.760 They've all been taken away. 00:10:33.580 --> 00:10:35.120 And Isaiah is saying, 00:10:35.840 --> 00:10:37.220 My people did not understand. 00:10:37.380 --> 00:10:38.860 They did not take it to heart. 00:10:38.860 --> 00:10:44.100 Even when they saw my disciplining hand, they did not respond. 00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:49.000 And they will go into exile and they will be scattered. 00:10:52.180 --> 00:10:56.539 Can you imagine what it would be like to be that Israelite in exile? 00:10:57.779 --> 00:10:59.159 Maybe they too felt, 00:10:59.519 --> 00:11:03.560 We've sinned too badly against the Lord and He has abandoned us. 00:11:04.539 --> 00:11:07.420 We've blown it one too many times. 00:11:07.419 --> 00:11:13.579 The Lord who has been so faithful to us and received us over and over again through our failure. 00:11:15.839 --> 00:11:16.899 Israel has fallen. 00:11:19.099 --> 00:11:21.399 Maybe they feared that God could not restore. 00:11:24.639 --> 00:11:27.579 Now, before we move on to the next section, I want to stop and think. 00:11:27.580 --> 00:11:32.620 Look, as we think about applying this passage to us today, 00:11:32.759 --> 00:11:36.639 it's easy for us to think about our own personal failure and our own personal sin. 00:11:37.040 --> 00:11:40.320 Actually, Nick's going to preach on that with a lot of clarity next week. 00:11:40.660 --> 00:11:42.520 So, come back next week because it'll be great. 00:11:44.100 --> 00:11:49.280 But the focus here is actually on the nation and God not being able to restore the nation. 00:11:49.279 --> 00:11:55.740 And we know in the New Testament, we know from the progress of biblical teaching that when Jesus comes, 00:11:55.839 --> 00:11:57.720 the people of God become something different. 00:11:57.839 --> 00:12:04.419 They're no longer a nation with a political identity and physical boundaries. 00:12:04.659 --> 00:12:07.019 But it becomes, in fact, the church. 00:12:07.019 --> 00:12:14.199 But maybe you look at the church and you think, can God redeem this? 00:12:17.100 --> 00:12:18.939 That's a real question, isn't it? 00:12:19.679 --> 00:12:21.679 We're a part of the Southern Baptist Church. 00:12:21.799 --> 00:12:29.899 And the Southern Baptist Church has a convention this week that will have a reckoning for its failure to be what God called it to be. 00:12:29.899 --> 00:12:33.319 And it's grievous and it's heartbreaking. 00:12:33.939 --> 00:12:42.620 And we pray that God will do good in this convention and move forward with righteousness and with justice and with humility and with brokenheartedness. 00:12:44.519 --> 00:12:45.879 But it might not. 00:12:47.120 --> 00:12:52.620 Because we know the church continues to fail and continues to not do these things well. 00:12:52.620 --> 00:13:00.720 What will God do with a church that continues to turn away? 00:13:00.980 --> 00:13:07.179 What will God do with a church that, in its arrogance and glib presumption, disregards God's Himself? 00:13:20.840 --> 00:13:22.220 Can He redeem His church? 00:13:23.519 --> 00:13:24.919 Well, Isaiah goes on. 00:13:25.419 --> 00:13:31.919 And just as he spoke words of hope to those Israelites in exile, he speaks words of hope to us today. 00:13:33.159 --> 00:13:35.100 Chapter 43 begins with the word, 00:13:35.299 --> 00:13:41.779 But now, though it looks so bleak, but now there is a greater word that I have for you. 00:13:42.779 --> 00:13:43.820 So let's read this. 00:13:43.820 --> 00:13:49.560 We'll start with verse 143, verses 1 through 7. 00:13:49.559 --> 00:13:53.079 But now, what will it look like for God to redeem His people? 00:13:54.359 --> 00:13:55.599 Let's read this together. 00:13:55.600 --> 00:13:56.860 But now, thus says the Lord, 00:13:56.860 --> you by name. 00:14:08.539 --> 00:14:09.959 You are mine. 00:14:09.959 --> 00:14:13.519 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. 00:14:13.519 --> 00:14:16.740 And through the rivers, they chapter 43, we see the first thing about the way that God will 00:15:17.520 --> 00:15:18.540 redeem his people. 00:15:19.200 --> 00:15:23.220 And the overwhelming emphasis here is that God will do it 00:15:34.740 --> 00:15:35.519 I knit you together. 00:15:35.660 --> 00:15:37.019 I know everything about you. 00:15:37.240 --> 00:15:40.840 There's nothing hidden and I have made you and called you to covenant relationship with me. 00:15:48.299 --> 00:15:54.279 Like a marriage, I have said, I will be yours and you will be mine forever. 00:15:54.839 --> 00:15:58.319 And this is the picture that he says, I formed you to be this people. 00:15:58.539 --> 00:16:02.539 And even in your unfaithfulness, my covenant will not fail. 00:16:02.919 --> 00:16:04.699 My faithfulness will not waver. 00:16:05.059 --> 00:16:07.079 I will not fall away. 00:16:08.059 --> 00:16:12.279 We see in verse four, the heart of this personal God for his people. 00:16:12.279 --> 00:16:18.819 He says, you are precious in my sight and honored and I love you. 00:16:20.399 --> 00:16:26.079 And friends, remember that from the very beginning, way back in the book of Deuteronomy, 00:16:26.179 --> 00:16:30.699 as God was calling his people out of Egypt and out of Israel, he reminded them, I didn't 00:16:30.699 --> 00:16:33.000 call you because you were so special. 00:16:33.279 --> 00:16:37.579 I didn't call you because you were lovely or because you were strong or because you were 00:16:37.579 --> 00:16:39.559 big or because you were particularly righteous. 00:16:39.559 --> 00:16:47.419 I set my love on you because of my choice has nothing to do with your worth or ability 00:16:47.419 --> 00:16:50.819 to earn or to deserve what I'm giving to you. 00:16:53.319 --> 00:17:00.000 Prophet Zephaniah will say later that God delights in his people, that he sings over them 00:17:00.000 --> 00:17:00.699 with joy. 00:17:01.679 --> 00:17:03.199 This is the heart of God. 00:17:03.500 --> 00:17:08.980 And Isaiah is reminding us that this is the kind of love that God has for his people. 00:17:08.980 --> 00:17:14.200 that drives his determination to redeem his people. 00:17:14.680 --> 00:17:16.339 Israel felt like trash. 00:17:17.279 --> 00:17:19.420 They felt like they had been discarded. 00:17:20.019 --> 00:17:25.059 They were out of their home, out of their place of worship, away from the temple where 00:17:25.059 --> 00:17:25.740 God dwelt. 00:17:26.120 --> 00:17:28.860 They were, remember the description, they were hiding in holes. 00:17:28.980 --> 00:17:29.819 They were in prisons. 00:17:31.539 --> 00:17:33.880 They were all, they were scattered and broken. 00:17:33.880 --> 00:17:37.240 And Isaiah speaks these words of hope. 00:17:37.700 --> 00:17:39.440 God sees you as precious. 00:17:40.480 --> 00:17:42.920 And the center of this section is verse 3. 00:17:43.140 --> 00:17:46.180 I am your God. 00:17:48.240 --> 00:17:54.700 Though you feel cast out and captive by others, I have not abandoned you and I will come for 00:17:54.700 --> 00:17:57.340 you and I will restore you. 00:17:57.339 --> 00:18:06.419 Isaiah goes on in verses 8 through 20. 00:18:07.199 --> 00:18:11.220 Not only is God's redemption personal in this way, but it is powerful. 00:18:11.740 --> 00:18:15.699 Let's read verses 8 through 20 together to see how he describes this. 00:18:15.700 -->
