culture. 00:01:10.980 --> 00:01:12.840 He prays about it. 00:01:12.840 --> 00:01:19.439 David processes his guilt by crying out to God. 00:01:19.439 --> 00:01:28.700 And not only does this transform how he feels, but it changes the course of his life. 00:01:29.400 --> 00:01:33.459 And it impacts the community around him. 00:01:33.459 --> 00:01:41.959 So let's revisit David's prayer and see if God songbook. 00:01:52.459 --> 00:02:00.719 Now, if I were to sum up this message in a sentence, it would go something like this. 00:02:01.459 --> 00:02:09.599 To be free from the grip of guilt, humbly pray to a merciful God. 00:02:09.599 --> 00:02:16.799 You don't need to copy David's prayer, at least not word for word. 00:02:17.680 --> 00:02:20.240 But you do need to pray like David. 00:02:22.000 --> 00:02:26.000 Authentically, humbly, to a merciful God. 00:02:27.259 --> 00:02:30.240 What does such a prayer sound like? 00:02:31.079 --> 00:02:33.759 What are the dynamics of a repentant prayer? retrace that as we go through David's prayer together. 00:02:46.120 --> 00:02:48.060 There's four bits to this prayer. 00:02:48.199 --> 00:02:51.719 First of all, it begins with a desperate cry. 00:03:06.099 Look at the inscription of the psalm. 00:03:07.099 --> 00:03:11.519 The bit before verse 1, which is part of the psalm. 00:03:12.239 --> 00:03:15.419 And a very important backdrop to the psalm. 00:03:16.419 --> 00:03:19.259 Why was David so guilt-ridden? 00:03:20.599 --> 00:03:23.959 In what circumstances was he crying out so desperately? 00:03:25.539 --> 00:03:32.919 Well, he tells us it was because he had committed adultery with Bathsheba. 00:03:33.759 --> 00:03:40.199 A very grim reason for David to have a desperate cry to God. 00:03:40.840 --> 00:03:50.319 Now, in our society, adultery is often minimized and even glamorized. 00:03:51.479 --> 00:03:54.419 Adultery, I mean, people rarely use that word nowadays. 00:03:54.419 --> 00:03:55.699 It's just a fling. 00:03:56.359 --> 00:03:57.459 A bit of fun. 00:03:58.559 --> 00:04:02.739 Or if it's seen negatively at all, it's a lapse of judgment. 00:04:04.479 --> 00:04:08.179 The scripture speaks with far greater seriousness about this. 00:04:09.560 --> 00:04:10.959 Adultery is sin. 00:04:10.960 --> 00:04:14.760 And it leaves devastation in its wake. 00:04:16.360 --> 00:04:25.579 Tragically, David, not a man without any morals, but a man of God, falls in to the sin. 00:04:26.540 --> 00:04:34.780 The long and sorry story is recorded at length in the Bible in 2 Samuel chapter 11. 00:04:34.779 --> 00:04:44.979 A story of a king who abuses his power, indulges his lust, and then covers up his tracks. 00:04:46.519 --> 00:04:56.379 David uses his considerable resources to try to not only ignore what he's done, but to bury the evidence of his sin. 00:04:56.379 --> 00:05:02.139 But there was one set of eyes in the universe that David couldn't escape. 00:05:03.360 --> 00:05:04.680 God saw. 00:05:05.860 --> 00:05:09.800 And the prophet Nathan was sent to call David to account. 00:05:10.319 --> 00:05:14.819 This psalm is written in the aftermath of that confrontation. 00:05:14.819 --> 00:05:27.860 Perhaps it was immediately on the back of that that David went back to his room and finally stopped pretending and began praying. 00:05:28.800 --> 00:05:34.139 With desperation, not only in his heart, but in his voice, he cries. 00:05:35.139 --> 00:05:40.939 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love. 00:05:40.939 --> 00:05:52.920 Now, it's worth just pausing here at the beginning and reflecting on what David doesn't do in response to his sin. 00:05:53.860 --> 00:05:57.100 There's a number of other avenues that David doesn't take. 00:05:58.399 --> 00:06:05.459 He doesn't cower in a corner, feeling crippled with guilt for the rest of his life. 00:06:05.459 --> 00:06:17.259 Neither does he minimize his sin or make excuses for his errors, which is always a popular strategy. 00:06:18.639 --> 00:06:22.259 The yes, I did it, but approach. 00:06:23.399 --> 00:06:26.859 I was wrong, but I was tired. 00:06:27.299 --> 00:06:28.359 I was stressed. 00:06:28.939 --> 00:06:33.859 I was sinful, but don't you know the circumstances that I was in? 00:06:33.860 --> 00:06:35.580 Don't you know what the other person did? 00:06:36.560 --> 00:06:40.180 There's none of that here in David's cry. 00:06:41.280 --> 00:06:43.660 There's no bargaining with God either. 00:06:44.660 --> 00:06:46.360 That's another common approach, isn't it? 00:06:46.360 --> 00:06:52.720 God, if you forgive me my sin, then I will take the rest of my life to make it up to you. 00:06:54.600 --> 00:06:57.900 None of that in the opening of this psalm. 00:06:57.899 --> 00:07:06.279 All this psalm records is the cry of a desperate man who has nothing to trade with God. 00:07:08.079 --> 00:07:13.979 David's only hope is in the character of the God to whom he cries. 00:07:15.560 --> 00:07:22.219 A God, verse 1, of mercy, unfailing love, and great compassion. 00:07:22.220 --> 00:07:33.420 And a God who, out of that compassion and love, blots out his transgressions and erases his teacher I had who used to mark our work at the front of the class. 00:07:45.600 --> 00:07:51.600 You would go up and, of course, my maths in particular was pretty weak. 00:07:52.020 --> 00:07:55.760 So there were plenty of errors to mark and to cross. 00:07:56.420 --> 00:08:05.120 But what I loved about this teacher is she used to take her own rubber and she would erase my errors on the page. 00:08:05.920 --> 00:08:06.980 I loved that teacher. 00:08:07.100 --> 00:08:11.060 I never even needed to go back to my seat and rub them out myself. 00:08:11.060 --> 00:08:17.680 And that's exactly the kind of God that David has. 00:08:19.160 --> 00:08:21.040 His God is like this. 00:08:21.220 --> 00:08:23.300 His God does this. 00:08:25.300 --> 00:08:30.360 There's a long-running series on television called The Equalizer. 00:08:31.139 --> 00:08:35.320 Some of you might have seen the film version with Denzel Washington. 00:08:36.259 --> 00:08:37.840 Who is the equalizer? 00:08:37.840 --> 00:08:43.800 The equalizer is the guy you call when what you need is justice. 00:08:45.300 --> 00:08:51.480 If you've been the victim of a crime and the courts have failed and the police can't help, 00:08:52.820 --> 00:08:56.300 he's the man you need when what you need is justice. 00:08:58.180 --> 00:09:03.680 But I'm guessing he's not much use when what you need is mercy. 00:09:03.679 --> 00:09:09.799 Who do you call on when what you need is mercy? 00:09:11.319 --> 00:09:14.039 Well, you can call on David's God. 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:19.000 The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 00:09:19.919 --> 00:09:26.819 who Paul in the New Testament calls rich in mercy and great in love. 00:09:26.820 --> 00:09:31.040 But how do we get the ear of this God? 00:09:32.320 --> 00:09:33.400 Very simple, isn't it? 00:09:34.200 --> 00:09:35.600 We cry to him. 00:09:37.620 --> 00:09:40.300 It doesn't need to be polished or sophisticated, 00:09:41.140 --> 00:09:43.000 but it does need to be real. 00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:47.020 And that takes humility, doesn't it? 00:09:47.980 --> 00:09:49.180 And vulnerability. 00:09:49.179 --> 00:09:53.620 Because when guilt weighs heavily on us, 00:09:54.299 --> 00:09:57.099 the last thing we often want to do is admit it. 00:09:58.539 --> 00:10:02.279 But that's exactly where we need to begin this morning, 00:10:02.279 --> 00:10:04.039 if we're feeling the weight of our sin. 00:10:05.719 --> 00:10:07.059 So a desperate cry. 00:10:07.159 --> 00:10:08.739 But notice that David continues. 00:10:09.539 --> 00:10:13.179 There's a depth to this psalm of repentance. 00:10:13.500 --> 00:10:14.079 There's a depth. 00:10:14.080 --> 00:10:21.800 Secondly, we move to a deeper diagnosis in verses 3 to 6. 00:10:23.100 --> 00:10:25.160 And what we have in these next verses 00:10:25.160 --> 00:10:31.000 is David's deeper reflection on his own sinfulness. 00:10:32.740 --> 00:10:34.520 It's interesting that, isn't it? 00:10:35.759 --> 00:10:37.580 Often when we're feeling guilty, 00:10:38.259 --> 00:10:42.500 we want to get out of that emotional space as quickly as possible. 00:10:42.500 --> 00:10:45.600 Because it's an unpleasant feeling to have. 00:10:45.919 --> 00:10:49.940 We don't like to linger in thinking about our sin. 00:10:51.120 --> 00:10:53.220 But David lingers. 00:10:54.519 --> 00:10:59.120 He meditates even more deeply on the depths of his sin 00:10:59.120 --> 00:11:01.700 and the heights of his unholiness. 00:11:02.379 --> 00:11:05.080 And as he does this, as he meditates, 00:11:05.480 --> 00:11:07.399 a couple of insights come to him, 00:11:07.740 --> 00:11:08.820 inspired by the Spirit. 00:11:08.820 --> 00:11:13.580 The first is that his sin, 00:11:14.280 --> 00:11:15.640 first and foremost, 00:11:16.140 --> 00:11:18.140 is a crime against God. 00:11:19.480 --> 00:11:21.220 You'll see that in verse 4. 00:11:22.920 --> 00:11:25.360 Against you only have I sinned 00:11:25.360 --> 00:11:28.980 and done what is evil in your sight. 00:11:30.440 --> 00:11:32.600 People sometimes think that David is having 00:11:32.600 --> 00:11:36.140 momentary amnesia in verse 4. 00:11:36.139 --> 00:11:38.779 I mean, how can David say this? 00:11:39.759 --> 00:11:43.240 Has David forgotten all the people he has hurt? 00:11:43.960 --> 00:11:46.059 All the people he has sinned against? 00:11:46.740 --> 00:11:49.699 Not least Bathsheba and her husband. 00:11:50.879 --> 00:11:55.980 How can David say that against God only has he sinned? 00:11:57.500 --> 00:11:59.279 Let's just be clear of one thing. 00:11:59.819 --> 00:12:02.340 David is not whitewashing his own sin 00:12:02.340 --> 00:12:03.519 or ignoring the victims. 00:12:03.519 --> 00:12:08.120 And the reason we know that is because of the inscription 00:12:08.120 --> 00:12:09.620 that we just read earlier. 00:12:10.439 --> 00:12:12.000 At the start of the psalm, 00:12:12.159 --> 00:12:15.360 the mention of Bathsheba is something that David wrote. 00:12:15.740 --> 00:12:19.840 David's making that publicly available in this psalm. 00:12:20.319 --> 00:12:22.939 So David knows his crimes against people. 00:12:23.059 --> 00:12:26.000 The nation knows his crimes now through the psalm 00:12:26.000 --> 00:12:28.139 that he has wronged others. 00:12:28.139 --> 00:12:31.740 But what David is pointing out 00:12:31.740 --> 00:12:34.419 is that there is a deeper crime. 00:12:35.679 --> 00:12:38.740 There is a more ultimate crime. 00:12:40.340 --> 00:12:42.799 David had sinned against his creator 00:12:42.799 --> 00:12:46.360 and rebelled against his maker. 00:12:46.360 --> 00:12:50.139 And that is so serious 00:12:50.139 --> 00:12:54.080 that it is as if that is the only thing 00:12:54.080 --> 00:12:55.700 that matters in this equation. 00:12:56.460 --> 00:12:59.560 Until that is reckoned with and sorted, 00:12:59.980 --> 00:13:01.440 nothing else can be sorted. 00:13:03.440 --> 00:13:06.980 David's deepest sin wasn't lust or murder. 00:13:06.980 --> 00:13:09.539 It was godlessness. 00:13:12.180 --> 00:13:13.360 At the end of the day, 00:13:13.420 --> 00:13:16.480 that's what makes all bad behavior so bad, 00:13:16.580 --> 00:13:17.720 so serious. 00:13:19.480 --> 00:13:21.920 If you don't believe in a God, 00:13:22.639 --> 00:13:26.320 if you don't have a divine judge in your worldview, 00:13:27.180 --> 00:13:29.740 then who's to say what's right and wrong? 00:13:29.740 --> 00:13:34.200 It all becomes a matter of personal opinion 00:13:34.200 --> 00:13:35.600 and personal feelings. 00:13:36.700 --> 00:13:40.080 But if there is a God who is above us 00:13:40.080 --> 00:13:41.879 and who has designed us, 00:13:42.200 --> 00:13:44.940 then he can tell us what is good 00:13:44.940 --> 00:13:47.320 and tell us what is destructive. 00:13:49.139 --> 00:13:52.419 That's David's first deeper diagnosis. 00:13:53.860 --> 00:13:55.860 All sin is a crime against God. 00:13:55.940 --> 00:13:57.159 That is much more serious 00:13:57.159 --> 00:13:58.620 than even what we've done to others. 00:13:58.620 --> 00:14:03.700 But notice there's another deeper insight here birth, 00:14:13.259 --> 00:14:17.860 sinful from the time my mother conceived me. 00:14:18.980 --> 00:14:21.320 Now, David doesn't say, 00:14:21.659 --> 00:14:22.539 and he could have said, 00:14:23.200 --> 00:14:26.440 I was sinful from the moment I committed adultery. 00:14:27.039 --> 00:14:28.180 What does he say? 00:14:28.620 --> 00:14:31.560 I was sinful from conception. 00:14:32.259 --> 00:14:34.899 I was sinful from birth. 00:14:36.700 --> 00:14:41.179 Theologians call this the doctrine of original sin. 00:14:42.139 --> 00:14:46.820 The idea that we are born into the world as sinners 00:14:46.820 --> 00:14:49.759 on the basis of the sin of Adam. 00:14:49.759 --> 00:14:54.840 We sin because we are sinners. 00:14:54.840 --> 00:14:59.080 We don't become sinners because we've committed a sin. 00:14:59.080 --> 00:15:00.080 It's a biblical truth. 00:15:00.080 --> 00:15:04.379 It's a biblical truth that, of course, 00:15:05.520 --> 00:15:08.540 raises a number of questions in people's minds. 00:15:09.780 --> 00:15:12.680 Not least, is this unfair? 00:15:12.679 --> 00:15:18.399 Is it unfair that people should be born with a propensity to sin? 00:15:19.539 --> 00:15:23.759 Well, that's a question we could spend a lot of time discussing. 00:15:24.239 --> 00:15:25.919 Very philosophical discussion. 00:15:25.919 --> 00:15:28.899 But let me say this. 00:15:29.559 --> 00:15:33.679 That however you feel about the doctrine of original sin, 00:15:34.000 --> 00:15:36.240 I'm sure you will agree with me, 00:15:36.659 --> 00:15:39.679 it is the most provable doctrine on the planet. 00:15:40.339 --> 00:15:40.860 Right? 00:15:40.860 --> 00:15:46.039 If you doubt that, if you doubt that original sin is a real thing, 00:15:47.139 --> 00:15:49.440 spend five minutes in a kid's nursery 00:15:49.440 --> 00:15:54.560 or two minutes in a kid's playground on day one of school 00:15:54.560 --> 00:16:01.139 where kids who have never been taught to be jealous are jealous, 00:16:01.139 --> 00:16:06.399 where children who have never been taught by their parents to be unkind 00:16:06.399 --> 00:16:08.740 are quite capable of it. 00:16:10.100 --> 00:16:12.199 It's instinctive. 00:16:14.480 --> 00:16:17.519 And so the real shock about David's sin 00:16:17.519 --> 00:16:21.480 is that it actually wasn't out of character. 00:16:23.519 --> 00:16:27.980 It was an extreme expression of the sinner he always was. 00:16:27.980 --> 00:16:35.340 Friends, if we really want to deal with guilt in our life, 00:16:36.039 --> 00:16:40.159 we must move beyond the incidence of sin 00:16:40.159 --> 00:16:44.039 and recognize that sin is part of our identity. 00:16:45.800 --> 00:16:47.820 It's a much more fundamental problem. 00:16:47.920 --> 00:16:50.180 It's not just that I need to be saved from certain mistakes. 00:16:50.399 --> 00:16:51.860 I need to be saved. 00:16:54.340 --> 00:16:56.039 Reminds me of the man, you know, 00:16:56.039 --> 00:16:58.299 in the story Jesus told in the Gospels, 00:16:59.019 --> 00:17:00.459 the tax collector, 00:17:02.319 --> 00:17:04.200 a man who had lived a pretty sinful life, 00:17:04.319 --> 00:17:08.619 and one day he feels moved to go up to the temple 00:17:08.619 --> 00:17:12.299 and confess his sin to God and see if it works. 00:17:13.519 --> 00:17:14.859 And the Bible says that 00:17:14.859 --> 00:17:18.359 he couldn't even raise his head towards heaven, 00:17:18.559 --> 00:17:20.460 such was his sense of guilt, 00:17:20.460 --> 00:17:22.480 but he beat his breast 00:17:22.480 --> 00:17:23.640 and he said, 00:17:24.019 --> 00:17:26.220 have mercy on me, 00:17:27.539 --> 00:17:28.200 the sinner. 00:17:30.279 --> 00:17:30.880 Notice 00:17:30.880 --> 00:17:34.819 that the man does not even list his sins. 00:17:35.079 --> 00:17:38.579 He does not even catalog his many wrongs. 00:17:39.440 --> 00:17:40.680 He was wrong. 00:17:41.840 --> 00:17:43.160 He was 00:17:43.160 --> 00:17:44.799 the sinner. 00:17:46.440 --> 00:17:48.519 The Bible says that that man went home forgiven. 00:17:48.519 --> 00:17:53.259 Because he identified his core problem. 00:17:54.579 --> 00:17:56.799 And it's only when we grasp that, 00:17:57.579 --> 00:17:59.259 that sinners indeed we are, 00:17:59.859 --> 00:18:01.460 that we will be in the position 00:18:01.460 --> 00:18:04.480 to receive the deliverance that now follows. 00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:09.720 And that's what comes next in verses 7 to 12. 00:18:09.720 --> 00:18:15.480 So having spent considerable time pondering his sin, 00:18:16.860 --> 00:18:18.500 David finally swivels 00:18:18.500 --> 00:18:21.500 and he thinks about God's deliverance. 00:18:22.200 --> 00:18:23.240 So thirdly, 00:18:23.319 --> 00:18:24.600 a divine deliverance. 00:18:26.360 --> 00:18:30.740 Now, notice that David is still praying for forgiveness. 00:18:31.100 --> 00:18:33.500 In fact, that's the case through the whole of this psalm. 00:18:33.500 --> 00:18:36.599 At least in how this psalm is written, 00:18:36.720 --> 00:18:38.200 it's a psalm of expectation. 00:18:39.180 --> 00:18:43.180 He's anticipating the forgiveness to come. 00:18:44.619 --> 00:18:49.799 David starts to list the ways in which he expects God 00:18:49.799 --> 00:18:51.319 to answer his prayer. 00:18:51.319 --> 00:18:54.879 What can you and I expect 00:18:54.879 --> 00:18:57.700 when we humbly cry for mercy, 00:18:58.319 --> 00:19:02.200 when we bank on the cleansing power of God? 00:19:02.759 --> 00:19:06.419 Well, we can expect a whole number of things. 00:19:08.099 --> 00:19:09.339 A cascade, 00:19:09.599 --> 00:19:11.139 a kind of waterfall 00:19:11.139 --> 00:19:14.059 of blessing and deliverance. 00:19:15.079 --> 00:19:17.639 Let's quickly note these. 00:19:17.700 --> 00:19:18.799 It's almost a list of them. 00:19:18.799 --> 00:19:21.000 In verse 7, 00:19:21.960 --> 00:19:22.759 there's cleansing. 00:19:24.859 --> 00:19:27.440 Remember that muck of David's sin? 00:19:28.980 --> 00:19:29.720 Earlier on, 00:19:29.759 --> 00:19:31.059 he describes it almost like a, 00:19:31.379 --> 00:19:33.079 it's almost like one of these rugby shirts, 00:19:33.200 --> 00:19:33.419 you know, 00:19:33.480 --> 00:19:36.099 that our mother's got to wash every Thursday night 00:19:36.099 --> 00:19:38.639 that you can't even see the original color. 00:19:39.079 --> 00:19:40.299 David needed that cleansing. 00:19:40.460 --> 00:19:41.799 And he says in verse 7 00:19:41.799 --> 00:19:44.579 that he will be purged 00:19:44.579 --> 00:19:46.440 with hyssop. 00:19:46.440 --> 00:19:51.400 I'm guessing hyssop isn't a particularly familiar word to us. 00:19:51.480 --> 00:19:52.039 Hyssop was, 00:19:52.720 --> 00:19:53.620 in the Old Testament, 00:19:54.400 --> 00:19:56.660 a branch that the Israelites used 00:19:56.660 --> 00:20:00.519 to dip into animal blood, 00:20:00.920 --> 00:20:01.980 animal sacrifices. 00:20:02.259 --> 00:20:03.980 It was something the Israelites used 00:20:03.980 --> 00:20:05.360 in acts of atonement. 00:20:06.799 --> 00:20:07.900 In other words, 00:20:08.960 --> 00:20:11.000 David expects cleansing to come 00:20:11.000 --> 00:20:12.440 through atonement, 00:20:13.440 --> 00:20:14.440 through the blood of atonement. 00:20:14.440 --> 00:20:18.440 That is always how cleansing comes. 00:20:20.220 --> 00:20:22.000 Why do you think Jesus died on a cross? 00:20:24.240 --> 00:20:24.880 Secondly, 00:20:25.019 --> 00:20:26.440 he expects healing 00:20:27.140 --> 00:20:28.400 as part of his deliverance. 00:20:28.460 --> 00:20:29.740 That's verse 8. 00:20:31.539 --> 00:20:32.360 David's bones, 00:20:33.039 --> 00:20:35.140 which have been crushed with guilt, 00:20:36.140 --> 00:20:39.279 will now return to the joy of health. 00:20:39.279 --> 00:20:41.899 Did you know that guilt 00:20:41.899 --> 00:20:44.220 is bad for you physiologically? 00:20:45.779 -->
