follows a lucrative real estate businessman. 00:03:03.900 --> 00:03:05.800 He's purchased a large ranch in Utah. 00:03:06.379 --> 00:03:13.079 It's a 500-acre site, previously owned by the government, and the site of purported paranormal 00:03:13.080 --> 00:03:14.800 and UFO-related activities. 00:03:15.660 --> 00:03:21.320 And the series follows this team of scientists and investigators and skeptics, and they've 00:03:21.320 --> 00:03:27.400 been brought to this ranch to investigate the reports by testing them scientifically. 00:03:28.400 --> 00:03:34.140 And one of the things that they've observed recently now are objects that seem to multiply 00:03:34.140 --> 00:03:35.660 and appear out of nothing. 00:03:36.420 --> 00:03:38.920 They're there one second, and they're gone the Loki who's considered a trickster god. 00:04:09.800 --> 00:04:13.320 And he's known for being neither fully good nor fully evil. 00:04:14.140 --> 00:04:17.560 And his main aim is to do nothing but create chaos. 00:04:18.220 --> 00:04:24.860 So in the show, he's lost his powers for a while, and he's caught in these different time 00:04:24.860 --> 00:04:25.220 dimensions. 00:04:25.600 --> 00:04:27.740 And he's constantly slipping in and out of them. 00:04:27.740 --> 00:04:31.699 And he's trying to find the answers to make it all stop. 00:04:32.319 --> 00:04:33.240 The mystery. 00:04:33.960 --> 00:04:38.759 Now, what's interesting to me is that our culture loves to look into things like that, 00:04:38.980 --> 00:04:41.280 like the TV show and the Loki show. 00:04:41.460 --> 00:04:46.420 But if you bring up a biblical miracle, it is a showstopper, okay? 00:04:47.680 --> 00:04:49.960 Conversation killer many times. 00:04:49.959 --> 00:04:55.939 And take, for example, Moses parting the Red Seas. 00:04:56.819 --> 00:05:04.699 God coming down and living in a golden ark that provides powers to win battles. 00:05:05.799 --> 00:05:10.439 Later dwelling in a temple, God himself that's constructed by man. 00:05:10.899 --> 00:05:14.099 Then men led by God who predict the future. 00:05:14.100 --> 00:05:19.120 Jesus being born of a virgin, resurrection from the dead. 00:05:19.320 --> 00:05:26.460 And don't forget that after that, Jesus just flew into the clouds after giving us what's 00:05:26.460 --> 00:05:27.640 known as the Great Commission. 00:05:29.220 --> 00:05:37.740 Our God taking a human body to himself, yet entering into our time from eternity. 00:05:37.740 --> 00:05:45.160 And that same God does miracles, just like the one that we will read about today. 00:05:45.300 --> 00:05:49.699 We're okay with that stuff, talking about it, being on TV, keeping it in a place where I can 00:05:49.699 --> 00:05:50.319 control it. 00:05:50.840 --> 00:05:54.660 But when it spills over into reality, it gets a little bit harder to talk about. 00:05:54.759 --> 00:06:01.300 Well, hopefully today we can discuss this, at least one of these miracles and bring it into 00:06:01.300 --> 00:06:02.259 our practical reality. 00:06:02.259 --> 00:06:08.039 So we're going to be looking at John 6, verses 1 through 15. 00:06:08.719 --> 00:06:11.860 And we'll start just by reading, setting the scene. 00:06:11.959 --> 00:06:13.839 And let's read verses 1 through 7 first. 00:06:14.779 --> 00:06:20.000 After this, Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 00:06:20.599 --> 00:06:25.360 And a large crowd was following him because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. 00:06:26.219 --> 00:06:29.860 Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. 00:06:29.860 --> 00:06:33.379 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. 00:06:33.879 --> 00:06:38.860 Lifting up his eyes then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said 00:06:38.860 --> 00:06:42.500 to Philip, where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat? 00:06:42.900 --> 00:06:46.980 And he said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. 00:06:47.720 --> 00:06:53.960 Philip answered him, 200 denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get 00:06:53.960 --> 00:06:54.980 a little. 00:06:54.980 --> 00:07:00.680 So Jesus has gone to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. 00:07:01.500 --> 00:07:02.980 It's also known as the Sea of 00:07:12.920 Mostly because of the miracles that he's been performing on people who were sick. 00:07:13.680 --> 00:07:17.640 So Jesus goes up to the top of the mountain with his disciples, and he 00:07:21.459 --> 00:07:25.060 John, the author, is hoping that we're going to make a connection here. 00:07:25.659 --> 00:07:31.139 Because at Passover, if you remember, the Jews would celebrate that God had set his people 00:07:31.139 --> 00:07:36.240 Israel free from slavery in Egypt through various different things they would do. 00:07:36.519 --> 00:07:39.939 And then he led them through the wilderness to the promised land. 00:07:40.959 --> 00:07:43.459 Now how did he feed them when they were in the wilderness? 00:07:43.839 --> 00:07:44.439 Anybody remember? 00:07:45.099 --> 00:07:45.939 and he sees this huge crowd coming towards him. 00:08:02.219 --> 00:08:04.959 And he looks over at one of his disciples, Philip, and he asks, 00:08:05.659 --> 00:08:08.159 where are we going to be buying bread to feed all these people? 00:08:09.539 --> 00:08:11.619 And do you think that Jesus really didn't know? 00:08:12.239 --> 00:08:12.579 No. 00:08:12.699 --> 00:08:13.339 It says it. 00:08:13.759 --> 00:08:16.139 It tells us that he said this to test him. 00:08:16.139 --> 00:08:18.120 And what's he doing here? 00:08:18.659 --> 00:08:24.279 He's giving Philip and the disciples a chance to work out their faith. 00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:25.259 Right? 00:08:25.579 --> 00:08:27.099 Maybe you feel like that sometimes. 00:08:27.279 --> 00:08:34.259 So Philip responds, well, it would take 200 days worth of paychecks to buy enough bread for all these people to eat. 00:08:34.259 --> 00:08:42.319 Now what I love here is that Jesus sees all these people, and he's thinking about taking care of them. 00:08:43.259 --> 00:08:46.019 He doesn't say, what are we going to do with this nuisance? 00:08:46.740 --> 00:08:50.480 Look at all of these snotty-nosed, germ-bearing people. 00:08:51.439 --> 00:08:52.720 He says, no. 00:08:53.659 --> 00:08:55.200 What are we going to do to feed these people? 00:08:55.200 --> 00:08:58.160 And you better believe that they weren't all Christians. 00:08:58.820 --> 00:09:00.900 They were not saying the right things. 00:09:01.720 --> 00:09:03.420 They did not know their Bible verses. 00:09:04.400 --> 00:09:07.440 They did not go to church or Bible studies. 00:09:08.400 --> 00:09:11.280 They were people who were wanting answers about mysteries. 00:09:12.200 --> 00:09:13.640 And they were wanting clarity. 00:09:14.040 --> 00:09:15.540 And they were wanting facts. 00:09:16.200 --> 00:09:17.920 And Jesus didn't turn them away. 00:09:17.919 --> 00:09:23.199 And if he didn't turn them away, he's not going to turn you away or me away. 00:09:24.019 --> 00:09:29.039 They were just trying to figure out who they are. 00:09:30.299 --> 00:09:32.179 So we go on to the miracle. 00:09:32.379 --> 00:09:34.039 It's in verses 8 many? 00:09:53.039 --> 00:09:55.199 Jesus said, have the people sit down. 00:09:55.759 --> 00:09:57.740 Now there was much grass in the place. 00:09:58.159 --> 00:10:00.860 So the men sat down about 5,000 in number. 00:10:01.039 --> 00:10:02.459 And Jesus then took the loaves. 00:10:02.659 --> 00:10:06.480 And when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. 00:10:06.959 --> 00:10:09.579 So also the fish, as much as they wanted. 00:10:10.459 --> 00:10:13.559 And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, 00:10:13.559 --> 00:10:17.159 Gather up the leftover fragments that nothing may be lost. 00:10:17.459 --> 00:10:24.059 So they gathered them up and filled 12 baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. 00:10:25.039 --> 00:10:30.019 Okay, so after Philip answers, then Peter's brother, Andrew, speaks up. 00:10:30.039 --> 00:10:36.879 And he says, well, there's a boy in the crowd who has five barley loaves and two fish. 00:10:36.879 --> 00:10:38.879 But that's nothing. 00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:44.100 Now, I don't know about you, but when I think about bread, typically my brain goes to this. 00:10:44.559 --> 15,000 to 20,000 people. 00:13:00.500 --> 00:13:02.079 It's easy to look at that and think 5,000. 00:13:02.179 --> 00:13:02.860 Now, why is that? 00:13:03.179 --> 00:13:07.059 You may not realize that in that time they counted the men of the families. 00:13:07.059 --> 00:13:11.319 And in reality, there are women and children too, which is, we know, because they're stealing 00:13:11.319 --> 00:13:12.159 the little boys' lunch. 00:13:12.759 --> 00:13:14.879 And then Jesus takes the barley loaves. 00:13:15.519 --> 00:13:16.679 He looks up into heaven. 00:13:17.179 --> 00:13:18.339 He gives 00:13:46.079 That is a work which is accomplished without the mediation of secondary causes. 00:13:46.980 --> 00:13:52.439 If God sometimes apparently uses secondary causes in the production of miracles, he employs 00:13:52.439 --> 00:13:53.740 them in an unusual way. 00:13:53.740 --> 00:13:56.700 So that the work is, after all, supernatural. 00:13:57.700 --> 00:14:02.680 Some regard miracles as impossible because they involve a violation of the laws of nature. 00:14:03.279 --> 00:14:04.960 But this is a mistake. 00:14:05.460 --> 00:14:09.360 The so-called laws of nature merely things are meant to be. 00:14:51.240 --> 00:14:52.559 But consider this. 00:14:53.600 --> 00:15:01.240 In reality, it could be that through miracles, God is temporarily pushing pause on this broken 00:15:01.240 --> 00:15:07.879 world to let us get a glimpse of the way things are meant to be and will be in the restored 00:15:07.879 --> 00:15:08.399 creation. 00:15:08.399 --> 00:15:15.279 So Jesus is showing you what heaven is like, where there's healing, there's restoration, 00:15:15.699 --> 00:15:16.720 there's abundance. 00:15:17.679 --> 00:15:17.860 Right? 00:15:17.959 --> 00:15:22.639 So maybe it's not, maybe it's that we're living in the unnatural and we see the natural. 00:15:22.879 --> 00:15:25.819 Because sin was not how this world was intended to be. 00:15:25.899 --> 00:15:27.299
