So I'll just read George's sermon, and you can pretend it's, well, it's coming 00:01:28.159 --> 00:01:38.659 for him, not for me. So greetings. I am writing the sermon as if it is me speaking. I am sure that it 00:01:38.659 --> 00:01:44.640 will sound odd to you at times. Case in point, I think this is only the third time in my long ministry 00:01:44.640 --> 00:01:50.060 that I was not able to do the Sunday morning service. I know this sounds odd, having Josiah 00:01:50.060 --> 00:01:55.239 say this, and for the record, I was ordained quite a few years before Josiah was born. 00:01:56.519 --> 00:02:02.319 Those of you who came to the Christmas Eve evening service might remember me saying that 00:02:02.319 --> 00:02:08.240 because I never write out my sermon text, I made a mistake trying to write out the text of my sermon 00:02:08.240 --> 00:02:14.260 for that day so that my early sermon was less stellar, less than stellar. I abandoned my written 00:02:14.260 --> 00:02:21.260 text in the evening and did a sort of a hybrid sermon. But here I am writing a sermon. If you are outside of the Christian faith, you might not realize that the 00:02:35.039 --> 00:02:41.019 Bible text that we are looking at today has caused two big controversies among Christians. I will 00:02:41.019 --> 00:02:46.239 mention this very briefly when we come to it, but I'm going to basically ignore the controversy. 00:02:46.799 --> 00:02:52.879 The point of these transitional stories is not to support a narrow theological controversy, 00:02:53.560 --> 00:03:00.699 but are important to help us understand what it means to enter into Jesus Christ crucified and grow. 00:03:00.699 --> 00:03:07.679 I will say again, the point of these transitional stories is not to support a narrow theological 00:03:07.679 --> 00:03:15.219 controversy, but are important to help us understand what it means to enter into Jesus Christ and grow 00:03:15.219 --> 00:03:22.439 into him. The Jesus way into which we enter is radically different and more beautiful than the 00:03:22.439 --> 00:03:28.859 religions, spiritualities, and therapies of this world. Why is it that time and time again, 00:03:28.860 --> 00:03:34.460 the religions and spiritualities of this world encourage a way of life that we would reject 00:03:34.460 --> 00:03:41.000 if the same things were happening in a personal relationship? That's a theme that George comes 00:03:41.000 --> 00:03:47.420 to more towards the end, so to keep in mind. Let's look for ourselves. Once again, I encourage you to 00:03:47.420 --> 00:03:51.880 bring your own Bibles to church so you can check what I say. That's perfectly all right. So, starting at Acts chapter 18, verse 18. 00:04:11.039 --> 00:04:16.680 Okay, so I'll read that out for us. After this, Paul stayed many days longer and then took leave of 00:04:16.680 --> 00:04:23.920 the brothers and set sail for Syria and with him Priscilla and Aquila. At Sencray he had cut his hair, 00:04:24.100 --> 00:04:29.540 for he was under a vow. Last week we read about Paul bringing the gospel to the city of Corinth. 00:04:30.840 --> 00:04:34.660 And then, so we'll continue on actually here. So, to verse 21. 00:04:37.460 --> 00:04:43.540 And they came to Ephesus, and he left them there, but he himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with 00:04:43.540 --> 00:04:49.939 the Jews. When they asked him to stay for a longer period, he declined. But on taking leave of them, 00:04:50.379 --> 00:04:58.080 he said, I will return to you if God wills. And he set sail from Ephesus. As an aside, Luke does not 00:04:58.080 --> 00:05:03.580 tell us why Paul chose to leave Corinth. But from what we will see in a moment, it is probably that 00:05:03.580 --> 00:05:08.660 he had a sense from God that it was time for him to return to his home church, his home church in 00:05:08.660 --> 00:05:16.320 Syrian Antioch, his sending church. We also don't know why he had his hair cut or shaved. It was not 00:05:16.320 --> 00:05:22.300 the sin of making himself look especially holy. It was probably a symbolic act from the Old Testament, 00:05:22.780 --> 00:05:29.680 a serious call to a prayerful and holy life. The real point of these verses is to set the stage for 00:05:29.680 --> 00:05:36.340 a more important encounter between Priscilla, her husband Aquila, and a traveling speaker named 00:05:36.339 --> 00:05:42.179 Apollos. But first, the journey must end. Reading verses 22 and 23. 00:05:43.839 --> 00:05:49.899 When he had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch. 00:05:50.459 --> 00:05:57.019 After spending some time there, he departed and went from one place to the next, through the region 00:05:57.019 --> 00:06:00.779 of Galatia and Phyrogia, strengthening all the disciples. 00:06:00.779 --> 00:06:11.259 This is a very compact statement. First, Paul went up to Jerusalem. Then he went down to his home church 00:06:11.259 --> 00:06:17.719 in Syrian Antioch. Luke moves quickly into then telling us that Paul embarks on his third missionary 00:06:17.719 --> 00:06:25.599 journey. It is now that we get to the interesting part of the story. God often answers prayer in weird 00:06:25.600 --> 00:06:34.520 ways. As well, how much do you have to know to be a true Christian? This is one of the questions 00:06:34.520 --> 00:06:41.879 that we asked this morning. How accurate do you have to be to be a real Christian? These are questions 00:06:41.879 --> 00:06:47.660 that Christians sometimes ask themselves, and sometimes people are made to feel shame or guilt 00:06:47.660 --> 00:06:52.600 because they don't measure up in the knowledge and accuracy department. Let's look. 00:06:52.600 --> 00:06:58.760 We meet Priscilla and her husband in Corinth. They are working class, and they are youngish 00:06:58.760 --> 00:07:04.280 Christians. They find themselves in Ephesus, just the two of them, with no Christian fellowship. 00:07:04.939 --> 00:07:10.420 They are Jewish, so every Sabbath they go to the synagogue. Now, the text does not say what they 00:07:10.420 --> 00:07:16.560 are doing there. But from the other parts of the New Testament, we know that they were very committed 00:07:16.560 --> 00:07:24.800 Christians and probably very prayerful. However, they are not Paul. It's important to remember that Paul 00:07:24.800 --> 00:07:32.399 had an extensive education in the Old Testament, taught by a rabbi who is still well known and read by rabbis 00:07:32.399 --> 00:07:42.079 today. And Paul was also fearless and deeply knowledgeable. I think it is safe to say that Priscilla and Aquila 00:07:42.079 --> 00:07:52.759 prayed that God would do something. And God does do something. But it is weird and unexpected. Let's look. 00:07:53.279 --> 00:07:54.719 Verses 24 to 26. 00:07:58.319 --> 00:08:06.719 Now, a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the 00:08:06.720 --> 00:08:13.820 scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and being fervent in spirit. He spoke and 00:08:13.820 --> 00:08:20.800 taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he only knew the baptism of John. He began to speak 00:08:20.800 --> 00:08:27.180 boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him and explained to him 00:08:27.180 --> 00:08:36.060 the way of God more accurately. We meet... Okay, I already read that part. So Apollos shows up out of the 00:08:36.059 --> 00:08:43.079 blue. He's well off and does not seem to have to work. In the original language, it is obvious that he is 00:08:43.079 --> 00:08:51.519 extremely well educated in both Roman slash Greek studies and in the Old Testament. It's as if he has 00:08:51.519 --> 00:08:59.139 two PhDs and he received them both from the intellectual capital of the empire. What is more, he seems to have 00:08:59.139 --> 00:09:06.000 figured out most of the gospel from John the Baptist without any connection to Christians. And he, like 00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:14.580 Paul, is a very bold talker. This is God answering prayer in a completely unexpected way. Priscilla and 00:09:14.580 --> 00:09:20.840 Aquila were probably praying for boldness and for help. They were probably not praying for a wandering 00:09:20.840 --> 00:09:28.580 intellectual with two PhDs and no connection to the local church. Claire, at this point, could you please put up the 00:09:28.580 --> 00:09:41.200 first point? When you pray, be specific and open-handed. When you pray, be specific and open-handed. We know that the 00:09:41.200 --> 00:09:49.700 Lord wants you to pray specifically about situations, so you should do that. But all praying should be open-handed, not only 00:09:49.700 --> 00:09:56.160 because the Lord might say no or might say later, but because he can also answer in a completely 00:09:56.160 --> 00:10:03.140 unexpected way. I had to throw that point in. Frankly, I always needed to be, I always need to be reminded to 00:10:03.140 --> 00:10:09.259 pray. But there are a trio of linked and powerful truths here about what it means to be a Christian. 00:10:10.140 --> 00:10:14.980 Let's finish reading this section. Chapter 18, 26 to 28. 00:10:14.980 --> 00:10:22.840 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him and 00:10:22.840 --> 00:10:29.539 explained to him the way of God more accurately. And when he had wished to cross to Achaia, the brothers 00:10:29.539 --> 00:10:36.159 encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who 00:10:36.159 --> 00:10:42.960 through grace had believed. For he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the scriptures that the 00:10:42.960 --> 00:10:53.540 Christ was Jesus. Note that this man who is well off with two PhDs had gaps and inaccuracies in what he 00:10:53.540 --> 00:11:00.720 was saying. Note as well that this working-class couple corrected him. Finally, note the work of God. 00:11:01.360 --> 00:11:06.860 And this is the second point, if you could put that up, Claire. You do not have to pass a Bible and or 00:11:06.860 --> 00:11:15.840 theology test with 100% marks to be a real Christian. You do not have to pass a Bible slash theology test 00:11:15.840 --> 00:11:23.940 with 100% marks to be a real Christian. And this is very comforting to us. Only Jesus would have scored 00:11:23.940 --> 00:11:32.899 100%. You and I can read an infallible and inerrant Bible, but we will never have an infallible and 00:11:32.899 --> 00:11:39.980 inerrant knowledge. The Christian life should hopefully be one of growth. The Christian who 00:11:39.980 --> 00:11:48.379 thinks that he has arrived is in a very bad spiritual shape. Apollos was a true Christian, but he had gaps 00:11:48.379 --> 00:11:55.399 and inaccuracies. And the point that matches with this is even more important and precious. Point three, 00:11:55.399 --> 00:12:11.459 true Christians humbly accept being corrected. There is no growth into Christ without correction. 00:12:15.679 --> 00:12:21.500 This is very important. It would be the most natural thing in the world for Apollos to sniff and think, 00:12:21.500 --> 00:12:26.600 who do these working class people think they are? They don't even know how little they know. 00:12:27.120 --> 00:12:34.559 I am the one with two PhDs and they need to learn from me. But look at verse 26 again. 26 says, 00:12:35.000 --> 00:12:39.379 they took him and explained to him the way of God more accurately. 00:12:42.679 --> 00:12:49.120 The humility of Apollos in this story is written to challenge you and me. Don't get too big for your 00:12:49.120 --> 00:12:57.279 britches. Be humbly open to correction. Please pray for me as well. These three points will help us to 00:12:57.279 --> 00:13:04.899 understand the next story. So here is the final part of that trio. Point four, you believe into the Lord 00:13:04.899 --> 00:13:13.759 Jesus Christ by his grace. We believe into the Lord Jesus Christ by his grace. Let's look again at verse 27. 00:13:13.759 --> 00:13:21.080 And when he wished to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to 00:13:21.080 --> 00:13:28.980 welcome him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed. Becoming a 00:13:28.980 --> 00:13:37.759 Christian is not only about knowing truths or compelling arguments. It's not mainly about emotions or 00:13:37.759 --> 00:13:47.179 affections, but we give ourselves to Christ for union with Christ, entering into him as he enters 00:13:47.179 --> 00:13:55.340 into us. But this is only possible by God's grace, his unmerited favor that comes with transforming power. 00:13:56.319 --> 00:14:01.659 Now, some of you are probably thinking that this, what I've said, needs more nuance. And I agree. 00:14:01.659 --> 00:14:08.500 We get a big chunk of nuance in the next two stories. The first one being a text that is used in 00:14:08.500 --> 00:14:15.079 theological controversy. And I think that focusing on the controversy, though, people miss the bigger 00:14:15.079 --> 00:14:21.620 concerns with coming into Christ and growing in godliness. They miss how radical the gospel is in a 00:14:21.620 --> 00:14:31.419 world with hundreds of thousands of so-called gods. Let's look. This is chapter 19, verses 1 through 7. 00:14:31.659 --> 00:14:37.759 And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came 00:14:37.759 --> 00:14:43.860 to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. And he said to them, did you receive the Holy Spirit when 00:14:43.860 --> 00:14:50.579 you believed? And they said, no, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit. And he said, 00:14:50.899 --> 00:14:58.720 into what were you baptized? They said, into John's baptism. And Paul said, John baptized with the 00:14:58.720 --> 00:15:03.860 baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, 00:15:04.180 --> 00:15:11.399 that is, Jesus. On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had 00:15:11.399 --> 00:15:16.980 laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying. 00:15:16.980 --> 00:15:19.180 There were about 12 men in all. 00:15:28.039 --> 00:15:34.700 So Apollos is gone, and now Paul arrives. As an aside, Paul and Apollos would come to get to know each 00:15:34.700 --> 00:15:41.820 other and work together, but that does not come yet. Paul meets some disciples in verse 1, but as the 00:15:41.820 --> 00:15:47.940 rest of the text shows, they are not yet Christians. They are disciples of John the Baptist. No one knows 00:15:47.940 --> 00:15:55.420 why Paul asks the question about the Holy Spirit, but he does. The story is obviously condensed. Paul 00:15:55.420 --> 00:16:00.560 would have taken some time to instruct them about some of the key points of the Christian faith, but 00:16:00.560 --> 00:16:08.700 after a short while, the 12 became Christians and are baptized into Christ. Now, this text is a key 00:16:08.700 --> 00:16:14.820 basis for our friends in the high liturgical churches who say that you need to have hands laid 00:16:14.820 --> 00:16:21.980 on you by the successor of the apostles, a bishop, to receive the Holy Spirit. Oddly enough, it's also a 00:16:21.980 --> 00:16:28.640 key text for our charismatic friends who say that there are, in effect, two levels or stages in the 00:16:28.640 --> 00:16:35.240 Christian life. Bare conversion, then being filled with the Holy Spirit, which is marked by tongue speaking. 00:16:35.240 --> 00:16:41.759 You can read all about these controversies on your own, because I think that they're both well-meaning, 00:16:42.200 --> 00:16:49.620 but wrong-headed, and take us away from momentous truths. I will say no more than to say today that 00:16:49.620 --> 00:16:55.259 the overwhelming evidence in the New Testament is that when you become a Christian, when you enter 00:16:55.259 --> 00:17:03.560 into Christ and he into you, then you receive the Holy Spirit at the same time. What gets missed by 00:17:03.559 --> 00:17:10.519 talking about theological controversies is the momentous way that becoming a Christian and being 00:17:10.519 --> 00:17:18.440 a Christian is illuminated. It is the language of love. It is the language of personal relationship. 00:17:19.399 --> 00:17:26.519 It is the language of commitment, and it is what your heart longs for. You would be concerned if your 00:17:26.519 --> 00:17:32.879 friend started dating a man that was always bossing her around and treated her like a slave and believed it 00:17:32.880 --> 00:17:41.280 was all right for him to lie, but this describes a major religion. Why is it all right for a god to act 00:17:41.280 --> 00:17:47.200 this way when you would tell your friend to flee from a relationship with that kind of person? 00:17:48.440 --> 00:17:53.340 You would also be concerned if your friend started dating a man that wanted to swallow her up, 00:17:53.660 --> 00:18:01.060 whose goal was obviously to erase her personality and uniqueness, but this describes several religions. 00:18:01.059 --> 00:18:06.980 Why is it all right for a god to act this way when you would tell your friend to flee from a 00:18:06.980 --> 00:18:12.359 relationship with such a person? You would be concerned if your friend started dating someone 00:18:12.359 --> 00:18:19.000 and it seemed as if their relationship was purely transactional. You know, you do this and I'll do that 00:18:19.000 --> 00:18:27.200 instead, or in exchange. There does not seem to be love. It just seemed to be doing things to either get 00:18:27.200 --> 00:18:35.039 things or stop things, but this describes all of paganism. Why is it all right for the gods to act 00:18:35.039 --> 00:18:39.759 like this when you would tell your friend to flee from a relationship with such a person? 00:18:41.680 --> 00:18:50.019 But the language and imagery of gospel, biblical-centered Christianity is the language of personal love 00:18:50.019 --> 00:18:58.019 relationship. Believe is a word that is used of persons and personal relationships. Whether you say 00:18:58.019 --> 00:19:04.259 believe in Jesus or believe into Jesus, the original language, it could be understood the same way, 00:19:04.259 --> 00:19:10.680 both ways. It is the same thing. As you get to know a person, in some ways you enter into them, 00:19:10.940 --> 00:19:16.879 and they enter into you. It is one of the reasons why people who, when they've had a loved one die, 00:19:16.880 --> 00:19:23.920 they talk as if there is now a hole in them, or a chunk missing, or that their life is now incomplete. 00:19:25.520 --> 00:19:32.520 Claire, could you please put up the point number five? To believe in Jesus is to enter into him, 00:19:32.720 --> 00:19:40.480 and have him enter into you. To believe in Jesus is to enter into him, and have him enter into you. 00:19:46.880 --> 00:19:54.200 The Holy Spirit is also God's personal presence. The Lord cannot enter into you, and you to him, 00:19:54.600 --> 00:20:01.060 without his sacrificial love. He loved you to the point of dying for you, and now he holds you, 00:20:01.260 --> 00:20:07.940 and he will not let you go. Just as with people, you can truly say you know someone, but your knowledge 00:20:07.940 --> 00:20:14.640 can be incomplete, and therefore needs to grow. Or you can think you know, what you think you know 00:20:14.640 --> 00:20:19.880 about the person reveals, that it's not just a small knowledge deficit, but that you're not even 00:20:19.880 --> 00:20:26.440 really talking about the person at all. You must not know them. You must have some knowledge, not 00:20:26.440 --> 00:20:32.800 necessarily complete knowledge. Sometimes people confidently say they know someone, but the way 00:20:32.800 --> 00:20:39.040 they talk about that person reveals that they really don't know that person. And this is the sixth point. 00:20:39.039 --> 00:20:43.200 It is possible to know too little about Christ, and be all wrong about him, so that you are not a Christian. 00:20:44.279 --> 00:20:55.980 It is possible to know too little about Christ, and to be all wrong about him, so that you are not a Christian. 00:20:57.799 --> 00:21:03.079 I think this is what happened to the twelve. Not the twelve apostles, but the twelve who Paul spoke to. 00:21:03.079 --> 00:21:10.339 An educated guess is that they talked of the Messiah in military terms, or about rule keeping, or some 00:21:10.339 --> 00:21:19.199 other fundamental error. No, it is Christ in you that is the hope of glory in you. There is, as the hymn says, 00:21:19.839 --> 00:21:25.639 God's dear presence to cheer and to guide, strength for today, and bright hope for tomorrow. 00:21:26.599 --> 00:21:32.639 Blessings, all mine, and ten thousand beside. Great is your faithfulness, Lord God. 00:21:33.079 --> 00:21:39.960 So the twelve, they heard the truth, just like Apollos, and they were willing to change. 00:21:40.740 --> 00:21:48.240 There is no growth in godliness without openness to change. But know this, we human beings are not 00:21:48.240 --> 00:21:56.659 neutral. Bishop J.C. We become hardened. 00:22:04.800 --> 00:22:07.680 Let's look at the last part, verses 8 through 10. 00:22:07.680 --> 00:22:17.779 And he entered the synagogue, and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them about 00:22:17.779 --> 00:22:25.940 the kingdom of God. But when some became stubborn and continued in unbelief, speaking evil of the way 00:22:25.940 --> 00:22:32.240 before the congregation, he withdrew from them and took the disciples with him, reasoning daily in the 00:22:32.240 --> 00:22:38.740 hall of Tyrannus. This continued for two years, so that all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord, 00:22:39.319 --> 00:22:40.539 both Jews and Greeks. 00:22:45.140 --> 00:22:51.220 Here we see both gospel growth and hardening of hearts.
