years ago, and one is from a scholarly treatise 00:04:21.920 --> 00:04:23.460 written 500 years ago. 00:04:23.459 --> 00:04:25.899 So, the popular song goes as follows. 00:04:27.359 --> 00:04:30.060 What if your blessings come through raindrops? 00:04:30.959 --> 00:04:33.299 What if your healing comes through tears? 00:04:34.219 --> 00:04:37.939 What if a thousand sleepless nights is what it takes to know you're near? 00:04:38.759 --> 00:04:45.539 What if my greatest disappointments or the aching of this life is the revealing of a greater thirst 00:04:45.539 --> 00:04:47.479 this world can't satisfy? 00:04:47.480 --> 00:04:52.660 What if trials of this life are your mercies in disguise? 00:04:54.060 --> 00:04:59.560 Well, in a very different context, almost 500 years ago, the German monk and scholar Martin Luther 00:04:59.560 --> 00:05:06.480 made a similar point at the conclusion of the 95 Theses, which was sort of a best-selling booklet 00:05:06.480 --> 00:05:11.040 of that era, right after the printing press had been invented. 00:05:11.180 --> 00:05:13.980 It was one of the first sort of mass-produced documents. 00:05:13.980 --> 00:05:19.840 If you're not familiar with the 95 Theses, Luther was mostly questioning some corrupt practices 00:05:19.840 --> 00:05:26.920 that had become common in the Roman Catholic Church at that time, such as the sale of indulgences. 00:05:27.020 --> 00:05:32.759 And some guys were going around promising that for a one-time significant financial contribution 00:05:32.759 --> 00:05:37.700 that you would be granted complete forgiveness of all sins without the need to really repent. 00:05:38.360 --> 00:05:39.600 And Luther was furious. 00:05:40.360 --> 00:05:41.080 And he said, no. 00:05:41.079 --> 00:05:47.620 First of all, according to the Bible, forgiveness of sin is not something you can buy or earn 00:05:47.620 --> 00:05:48.719 by good deeds. 00:05:48.939 --> 00:05:55.219 It's purely a gift from God that we receive from His grace by trusting Jesus. 00:05:55.800 --> 00:06:03.039 But he also said if we owe our salvation completely to God, we also owe our lives completely to Him 00:06:03.039 --> 00:06:04.719 to live for His glory. 00:06:04.720 --> 00:06:10.360 So trusting Jesus isn't a one-time transaction where you sign on a paper and never think about 00:06:10.360 --> 00:06:10.880 it again. 00:06:11.860 --> 00:06:17.140 True faith in Jesus expresses itself in a life of ongoing repentance, which means turning 00:06:17.140 --> 00:06:21.000 to God, obedience, and sacrificial love for others. 00:06:21.500 --> 00:06:25.180 And so this is what he said at the conclusion of these 95 Theses. 00:06:25.180 --> 00:06:32.639 He said, Christians should be exhorted to be zealous to follow Christ their head through penalties, 00:06:33.340 --> 00:06:34.939 deaths, and hells. 00:06:35.780 --> 00:06:41.780 And let them thus be more confident of entering heaven through many tribulations rather than 00:06:41.780 --> 00:06:44.280 through a false assurance of peace. 00:06:44.920 --> 00:06:48.360 Luther was alluding to this very chapter in Acts that we just read. 00:06:48.360 --> 00:06:55.060 Verse 22, Paul and Barnabas told the Christian believers, through many tribulations, we must 00:06:55.060 --> 00:06:57.199 enter the kingdom of God. 00:06:57.960 --> 00:07:00.840 And that's really the main point of our passage this morning. 00:07:01.740 --> 00:07:04.040 What I want to do this morning, I want to do three things. 00:07:04.720 --> 00:07:10.040 First, I want to look deeper into Paul and Barnabas' teaching in this verse, verse 22. 00:07:11.020 --> 00:07:14.660 Second, I want to look at Paul and Barnabas' example throughout the whole chapter. 00:07:14.660 --> 00:07:21.480 And third, I want us to consider some implications for us today as individuals and as a church. 00:07:21.600 --> 00:07:28.420 So first, Paul and Barnabas' teaching, verse 22, through many tribulations, we must enter 00:07:28.420 --> 00:07:29.460 the kingdom of God. 00:07:30.720 --> 00:07:32.480 And you might say, well, what exactly does that mean? 00:07:33.660 --> 00:07:35.960 What exactly is the kingdom of God? 00:07:36.840 --> 00:07:42.640 Well, the kingdom of God is God's liberating rule breaking into human history. 00:07:42.639 --> 00:07:48.560 The kingdom of God is where God's healing and restoring presence makes all things new. 00:07:49.759 --> 00:07:54.139 Where God's creatures reflect his love and wisdom and glory back to him. 00:07:55.039 --> 00:07:59.099 Where his people are filled with righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. 00:08:00.779 --> 00:08:05.240 When Jesus began his public ministry, he proclaimed, the kingdom of God is at hand. 00:08:05.240 --> 00:08:11.240 And he said in Luke chapter 4, the spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed 00:08:11.240 --> 00:08:11.579 me. 00:08:12.939 --> 00:08:14.660 In other words, a king was anointed. 00:08:14.780 --> 00:08:18.900 In other words, God has anointed me to bring this kingdom, to proclaim. 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:21.259 And he said, this is what the kingdom is going to look like. 00:08:21.740 --> 00:08:23.400 To proclaim good news to the poor. 00:08:24.360 --> 00:08:25.639 Liberty to the captives. 00:08:26.139 --> 00:08:27.620 Recovering of sight to the blind. 00:08:27.720 --> 00:08:29.019 To set free the oppressed. 00:08:29.379 --> 00:08:31.560 To proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. 00:08:31.560 --> 00:08:37.679 And Jesus not only preached about the kingdom of God, he also healed people from sicknesses. 00:08:38.059 --> 00:08:40.259 Cast out evil spirits and set people free. 00:08:40.779 --> 00:08:42.679 Brought people out of shame and isolation. 00:08:43.240 --> 00:08:45.000 Into wholeness and community. 00:08:46.580 --> 00:08:51.879 And all these miracles, these signs that Jesus did, were signs of God's kingdom breaking into 00:08:51.879 --> 00:08:55.240 this present, broken, and fallen world. 00:08:55.240 --> 00:08:59.899 You see, the kingdom of God is what we were made for. 00:09:00.419 --> 00:09:06.000 As human beings, created in God's image and deep inside, it's what we long for. 00:09:06.659 --> 00:09:10.080 It's what we hope for when the Holy Spirit moves in our hearts. 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:17.379 And the good news is that Jesus has made a way for us to enter into this kingdom of wholeness 00:09:17.379 --> 00:09:21.940 and peace and righteousness and justice and love. 00:09:21.940 --> 00:09:26.020 And then, of course, there's another part to Paul's statement. 00:09:26.320 --> 00:09:27.880 He doesn't just talk about the kingdom of God. 00:09:27.940 --> 00:09:30.320 He also talks about going through many tribulations. 00:09:31.700 --> 00:09:33.340 So what exactly does that word mean? 00:09:34.640 --> 00:09:39.920 Well, that word tribulation can also be translated hardship or affliction or even persecution. 00:09:41.380 --> 00:09:48.460 In one sense, affliction or suffering is an inevitable part of life, human life, in this broken world. 00:09:48.460 --> 00:09:52.820 Sometimes we can even bring suffering on ourselves by our own foolishness. 00:09:52.920 --> 00:09:55.820 But the word translated tribulation is a bit more specific. 00:09:56.900 --> 00:10:05.060 It's not speaking about all human suffering generally, but it's focusing especially on the hardships and difficulties 00:10:05.060 --> 00:10:13.940 that we endure on the way to the kingdom of God for the sake of following Jesus along that path. 00:10:13.940 --> 00:10:20.840 And, you know, this wasn't just Paul's idea that we have to go through tribulations to enter the kingdom of God. 00:10:20.900 --> 00:10:23.280 It was a common idea throughout the New Testament. 00:10:23.540 --> 00:10:28.060 So Jesus himself, in John 16, 33, said to his disciples, 00:10:28.220 --> 00:10:31.720 In this world you will have tribulation, but take heart. 00:10:32.220 --> 00:10:33.520 I have overcome the world. 00:10:34.420 --> 00:10:39.080 In Revelation chapter 1, verse 9, the apostle John introduces himself in these same terms. 00:10:39.080 --> 00:10:48.120 He says, I, John, am your brother and partner in the tribulation and the kingdom and the patient endurance that are in Jesus. 00:10:50.440 --> 00:10:52.639 Earlier today we heard from James, 00:10:52.740 --> 00:10:56.280 Count it all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you face trials of many kinds, 00:10:57.300 --> 00:11:01.440 because the testing of your faith produces steadfastness or perseverance. 00:11:02.400 --> 00:11:06.320 Now, if you're here today, if you're visiting, if you're not a follower of Jesus, 00:11:06.320 --> 00:11:08.660 let me say to you really right up front, 00:11:09.280 --> 00:11:12.400 following Jesus will not necessarily make your life easier. 00:11:13.700 --> 00:11:15.640 Now, if you listen to some of the TV preachers, 00:11:16.040 --> 00:11:17.280 they won't tell you that. 00:11:18.320 --> 00:11:21.200 They'll say if you believe in Jesus, he'll give you your best life now. 00:11:22.080 --> 00:11:23.320 A life without limitations. 00:11:23.560 --> 00:11:24.540 Every day of Friday. 00:11:25.160 --> 00:11:26.240 Just claim your blessing. 00:11:26.980 --> 00:11:28.400 And God will send it down from heaven. 00:11:59.140 --> 00:12:01.480 the glorious kingdom of God. 00:12:01.480 --> 00:12:07.740 You know, Paul doesn't say, we might face many tribulations on the way to the kingdom of God. 00:12:07.820 --> 00:12:12.259 He might say, he doesn't say, some of you will face many tribulations. 00:12:12.440 --> 00:12:14.399 He says, we must. 00:12:17.300 --> 00:12:23.300 That word translated must, it's sort of a key word in the gospel of Luke and in the book of Acts. 00:12:23.360 --> 00:12:28.080 It's one of those words that when you read it, it should make siren bells go off in your head. 00:12:28.080 --> 00:12:31.220 Because it doesn't appear in every chapter. 00:12:31.360 --> 00:12:37.840 It's not a word that comes up all the time, but it comes up at key points in the narrative. 00:12:38.660 --> 00:12:46.379 So in the gospel of Luke, Jesus' first spoken words to his parents when he was a 12-year-old boy, 00:12:46.379 --> 00:12:50.740 did you not know that I must be in my father's house? 00:12:52.019 --> 00:12:59.320 And then when he began his public ministry, began preaching, he said, I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God. 00:13:00.659 --> 00:13:06.139 Later on, Jesus said to his disciples, the son of man must suffer and be rejected and killed. 00:13:06.139 --> 00:13:10.960 And at the end, on the road to Emmaus, he said, was it not necessary? 00:13:12.179 --> 00:13:13.220 It's the same word. 00:13:13.779 --> 00:13:16.500 Sometimes it's translated must, sometimes it's translated it is necessary. 00:13:16.620 --> 00:13:21.740 The same word, was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and then enter into his glory? 00:13:23.559 --> 00:13:28.419 You see, the word must emphasizes God's set purpose. 00:13:29.539 --> 00:13:31.220 Paul and Barnabas taught to these new groups of followers of Jesus. 00:14:24.480 --> 00:14:28.399 But, you know, we don't just see what they said and what they taught. 00:14:28.480 --> 00:14:30.519 This passage also shows us what they did. 00:14:31.899 --> 00:14:35.920 We see throughout the whole chapter Paul and Barnabas example in this regard. 00:14:36.960 --> 00:14:42.980 And in this whole chapter, we see the kingdom of God gloriously breaking into this fallen world. 00:14:42.980 --> 00:14:53.800 And we see God's people enduring many, even increasing tribulations as they participate in extending that kingdom. 00:14:54.700 --> 00:14:59.180 And in one sense, this chapter 14 shows us God's kingdom advancing. 00:15:00.080 --> 00:15:01.800 It's Paul's first missionary journey. 00:15:01.799 --> 00:15:10.659 Paul and Barnabas, just in this chapter, they're publicly proclaiming the message of Jesus in three new cities, Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe. 00:15:11.479 --> 00:15:15.719 In both Iconium and Lystra, we see Paul doing miraculous signs and wonders. 00:15:16.620 --> 00:15:22.620 Verse 8 through 10, we see this wonderful story of a man who had been crippled from birth, who had never walked. 00:15:23.259 --> 00:15:27.639 And as he listened to Paul and believed the message about Jesus, he was healed. 00:15:28.019 --> 00:15:29.959 And he sprang up and began walking. 00:15:30.299 --> 00:15:30.899 What a picture. 00:15:31.799 --> 00:15:36.279 Of the power of God to save and heal and restore and deliver. 00:15:37.479 --> 00:15:44.959 In each city, many people, both Jews and Gentiles, came to faith in the risen Lord Jesus. 00:15:46.079 --> 00:15:49.279 On the way back, verse 23, Paul appoints leaders for all the churches. 00:15:50.279 --> 00:15:56.879 At the end of the chapter, verse 27, they declared all that God had done with them and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles. 00:15:56.879 --> 00:16:14.919 I mean, in summary, in these two chapters, Acts 13 and 14, Paul and Barnabas traveled hundreds of miles, presumably on foot, planted at least five new churches from scratch without any existing core group in five different cities, and appointed a team of elders to lead each of them all in the course of less than three years. 00:16:14.919 --> 00:16:15.919 That's amazing. 00:16:15.919 --> 00:16:16.620 That's amazing. 00:16:17.919 --> 00:16:20.019 Talk to anyone in the New London Church Plant group. 00:16:20.659 --> 00:16:22.179 It doesn't always happen that fast. 00:16:22.179 --> 00:16:30.799 At the very same time, we see in this chapter, Paul and Barnabas facing growing opposition and difficulty. 00:16:32.079 --> 00:16:40.679 In Iconium, verse 2, the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers, against the brothers and sisters, the believers in Jesus. 00:16:40.679 --> 00:16:45.059 Now, in verse 3, we see Paul's initial response to this opposition. 00:16:46.500 --> 00:16:48.439 He stays there for a long time. 00:16:49.639 --> 00:16:51.219 He doesn't immediately run away. 00:16:52.439 --> 00:16:53.459 Paul was a good shepherd. 00:16:54.599 --> 00:16:58.659 When the sheep were 00:17:17.279 Sometimes the bold response to opposition is to stay and stick it out. 00:17:17.380 --> 00:17:21.299 Sometimes the wise response to opposition is to leave and go somewhere else. thinking he's dead, barely survives. 00:17:40.600 --> 00:17:50.039 About 15 years later, when Paul was writing 2 Timothy, he looks back on this time in his life as a particularly intense time of see God's kingdom advancing and growing tribulations in order to extend that kingdom. 00:18:16.879 --> 00:18:19.460 And this is not an unusual pattern in the New Testament. 00:18:19.460 --> 00:18:25.920 Great miracles, great works of God are often accompanied by great difficulties. 00:18:27.640 --> 00:18:30.660 Just one other example, 1 Corinthians 16, 8 and 9. 00:18:31.180 --> 00:18:33.380 Paul is talking about some of his travel plans, and he says, 00:18:33.440 --> 00:18:38.940 I'll stay in Ephesus until Pentecost, for a wide door for effective work has opened to me.
