psalm of Asaph. 00:00:16.879 --> 00:00:22.320 Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. 00:00:22.679 --> 00:00:25.080 And then in verse 28, 00:00:25.400 --> 00:00:28.580 But for me it is good to be near God. 00:00:28.579 --> 00:00:34.699 I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works. 00:00:35.140 --> 00:00:39.119 Very positive verses at the beginning and the end of the psalm, 00:00:39.200 --> 00:00:42.579 where Asaph sees in verse 1 that God is good. 00:00:43.679 --> 00:00:49.239 He is a great God who is good to his people, to those who are pure in heart. 00:00:49.340 --> 00:00:51.840 And then at the end of the psalm, he's saying, 00:00:51.920 --> 00:00:56.539 It is good for me to draw near to this God, this God who is good to me. 00:00:56.539 --> 00:01:04.260 In so many ways I have found there my refuge, and I will tell of all his wondrous works. 00:01:05.159 --> 00:01:07.640 You have that at the beginning and the end. 00:01:07.760 --> 00:01:14.400 But what you see throughout the psalm is a little like what David speaks of in Psalm 39. 00:01:15.060 --> 00:01:16.700 In that second half of verse 12, 00:01:16.700 --> 00:01:25.799 There's a lot going on. 00:01:25.799 --> 00:01:29.260 There's a lot of challenges, a lot of struggles that he has. 00:01:29.359 --> 00:01:35.620 And it's a real sense of looking at the Christian's life in so many ways. 00:01:35.620 --> 00:01:42.760 And what you see in the psalms so often is just that, the reality of life. 00:01:43.260 --> 00:01:49.040 One thing you can say about the psalms is that they reflect a real sense of honesty. 00:01:49.620 --> 00:01:55.200 From the author of the psalm, whoever that is, we know a number of different people wrote the psalms. 00:01:55.320 --> 00:01:58.920 David, many of them, but here we have another, a psalm of Asaph. 00:01:58.920 --> 00:02:05.320 And we see that they come across just with that sense of, this is the reality of life. 00:02:06.079 --> 00:02:11.159 It's Asaph who was one who was a worship leader in the temple. 00:02:12.140 --> 00:02:20.740 You read of him in 1 Chronicles chapter 15, where you're seeing an outline of what the community's worship looked like 00:02:20.740 --> 00:02:22.560 and who was involved in it. 00:02:23.060 --> 00:02:26.620 And Asaph is there mentioned as one of the worship leaders. 00:02:26.620 --> 00:02:32.259 And so he was one who led people into that worship in the temple. 00:02:33.259 --> 00:02:37.080 And part of his task was, it was through song. 00:02:37.719 --> 00:02:39.500 It was through music. 00:02:39.719 --> 00:02:43.560 It was through leading them into the praise of God. 00:02:44.240 --> 00:02:49.759 But what you see in this psalm and so many others, it's just not always a cheery chorus. 00:02:50.379 --> 00:02:53.240 It's not always, don't worry, everything's fine. 00:02:53.240 --> 00:02:59.140 And there's very much a sense of the reality of all the different ups and downs. 00:02:59.379 --> 00:03:07.420 And in Psalm 73, Asaph has a lot of these questions of someone who is finding the way difficult, 00:03:07.620 --> 00:03:12.140 of someone who is looking around, seeing all that's going on around him and wondering, 00:03:12.939 --> 00:03:15.120 well, we're saying God is good. 00:03:15.120 --> 00:03:20.680 But yet how in reality is God good when this is what we're seeing around us? 00:03:20.759 --> 00:03:25.759 He's in a host of others you find in Scripture who had questions. 00:03:25.960 --> 00:03:33.500 You think of Job in the Old Testament and his life and all that he went through in his life. 00:03:33.500 --> 00:03:41.620 It would be easy to question the goodness of God, easy to question everything that's going on around him. 00:03:41.800 --> 00:03:50.860 Or many of the prophets, Jeremiah, all the prophets, they all had their own different questions of what was going on. 00:03:51.300 --> 00:03:53.000 What's happening around us? 00:03:53.120 --> 00:03:57.740 How can we see the goodness of God in the midst of this? 00:03:57.740 --> 00:04:08.280 And yet always, always they were able to come to that point where their God. 00:04:25.819 --> 00:04:34.420 He sees a right view of God and who he is and all that he does, no matter what's happening around. 00:04:35.319 --> 00:04:39.839 And so as we look at this psalm, we at 00:09:18.139 --> 00:09:19.599 the fullness of God 00:09:19.599 --> 00:09:21.139 as we find it in this psalm 00:09:21.139 --> 00:09:22.379 in three different ways, 00:09:22.860 --> 00:09:24.879 taking us on that pilgrim's walk, 00:09:24.919 --> 00:09:25.539 as it were, 00:09:26.240 --> 00:09:26.799 when we see, 00:09:26.960 --> 00:09:27.620 first of all, 00:09:27.919 --> 00:09:30.000 the 00:13:05.740 The Lord bestows favor and honor. 00:13:05.899 --> 00:13:08.460 No good thing does he withhold 00:13:08.460 --> 00:13:10.460 from those who walk uprightly. 00:13:11.039 --> 00:13:11.840 O 00:13:46.359 --> 00:13:49.199 It means we are not walking uprightly with God, 00:13:50.099 --> 00:13:51.779 as Psalm 84 says, 00:13:52.559 --> 00:13:54.439 where he does not hold good 00:13:54.439 -->
