the tenants, as it is called. 00:00:18.839 --> 00:00:26.160 It's not just a parable as we see here, Jesus teaching it against the Jewish leaders of the time, 00:00:26.160 --> 00:00:31.859 but it's a reminder to us of how we have God's Word to this very day. 00:00:32.640 --> 00:00:38.060 At the heart of it is that the Son was sent to them and the Son was rejected. 00:00:38.320 --> 00:00:41.299 So this is looking at the Jews of that day. 00:00:41.880 --> 00:00:46.439 But then at the end of verse 9, it says, 00:00:46.439 --> 00:00:54.379 He will come and destroy the tenants and those who have rejected him and give the vineyard to others. 00:00:54.380 --> 00:00:59.520 So that the Gospel is going to go out. 00:01:00.640 --> 00:01:09.200 And as with many parts of Scripture, what we find here is a response to Jesus' teaching. 00:01:09.620 --> 00:01:13.500 A response to the authority of God's Word. 00:01:13.500 --> 00:01:17.379 As a question for ourselves as we begin the service this evening, 00:01:17.659 --> 00:01:22.879 what do you do when you hear God's Word speaking to you? 00:01:22.879 --> 00:01:24.659 We all hear it. 00:01:24.780 --> 00:01:27.539 We all hear God's Word speaking to us. 00:01:28.039 --> 00:01:28.939 We heard it this morning. 00:01:29.039 --> 00:01:30.019 We hear it this evening. 00:01:30.420 --> 00:01:31.579 We hear it so often. 00:01:31.679 --> 00:01:35.239 But what do we do with the Word of God? 00:01:35.780 --> 00:01:38.420 And what you find as you go through the Scriptures, 00:01:38.420 --> 00:01:43.179 you find there are those who delight to hear the Word of God. 00:01:43.280 --> 00:01:48.019 You think of the two on the road to Emmaus who met with Jesus there on the way. 00:01:48.019 --> 00:01:52.739 And it says that their heart burned within them. 00:01:53.539 --> 00:01:54.599 Not with anger. 00:01:54.959 --> 00:01:57.259 As we can often think of a burning heart with anger. 00:01:57.399 --> 00:01:58.299 It wasn't with anger. 00:01:59.000 --> 00:02:04.439 But it was with this amazement, this wonder that Jesus was there opening up the Scriptures to them. 00:02:04.479 --> 00:02:07.679 So there is one response to the Word of God. 00:02:07.680 --> 00:02:11.060 But as we see again and again throughout God's Word, 00:02:11.120 --> 00:02:14.740 there's another response, another burning within the heart. 00:02:14.819 --> 00:02:16.780 But it's a burning with anger. 00:02:17.400 --> 00:02:24.819 It's a burning with a ferocious anger as we see here as we look at the authority that Jesus was challenging. 00:02:25.800 --> 00:02:31.580 As you read through chapter 11 and chapter 12 here in Mark's Gospel, 00:02:31.580 --> 00:02:39.780 Jesus has arrived in Jerusalem and he's just a matter of days away from the crucifixion, 00:02:40.140 --> 00:02:41.820 from going to the cross. 00:02:42.620 --> 00:02:44.560 Why was he going to be crucified? 00:02:45.740 --> 00:02:49.040 Well, we could say because it was God's plan. 00:02:49.800 --> 00:02:52.860 That God had planned and purposed this from the very beginning. 00:02:52.960 --> 00:02:56.860 As we see going through the Old Testament, as we saw this morning, 00:02:56.860 --> 00:03:00.360 we thought about Isaiah 53, just touched on that, 00:03:00.480 --> 00:03:04.820 how this reminder of Isaiah there speaking about the suffering servant, 00:03:04.940 --> 00:03:07.160 the one who was going to give his life. 00:03:07.240 --> 00:03:09.560 We could say that's the reason. 00:03:10.280 --> 00:03:12.940 But we see it too in another way as well here. 00:03:13.460 --> 00:03:18.120 He was going to be crucified because he was at the mercy of people's hands, 00:03:18.780 --> 00:03:21.900 those who he caused offense to, those who he upset. 00:03:22.040 --> 00:03:23.760 He angered these leaders. 00:03:23.759 --> 00:03:27.479 And it was they who were seeking to crucify him as well. 00:03:28.179 --> 00:03:31.539 In chapter 11 there in verse 18, 00:03:32.179 --> 00:03:35.659 Jesus had come in and seen what they were doing in the temple in Jerusalem. 00:03:36.519 --> 00:03:38.899 And he's saying there in verse 17, 00:03:39.039 --> 00:03:42.799 that my house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations, 00:03:42.899 --> 00:03:44.519 but you have made it a den of robber. 00:03:44.599 --> 00:03:46.699 So he's speaking to their hearts there. 00:03:46.699 --> 00:03:54.099 And what they say is that they sought a way to destroy him in verse 18. 00:03:54.879 --> 00:03:57.839 They sought a way to destroy him. 00:03:58.439 --> 00:04:02.979 In verse 27 to 33, as we read here, 00:04:03.439 --> 00:04:06.759 again, they were challenging his authority, 00:04:07.039 --> 00:04:09.539 questioning his authority. 00:04:10.259 --> 00:04:13.620 Who is he to say any of these things to us? 00:04:13.620 --> 00:04:18.220 And even after this parable at the end in verse 12, 00:04:18.980 --> 00:04:21.439 they were seeking to arrest him. 00:04:21.579 --> 00:04:23.379 So it still wasn't changing. 00:04:23.939 --> 00:04:26.139 Their reaction to God's word was one of, 00:04:26.220 --> 00:04:29.000 you will not tell us what to do. 00:04:30.100 --> 00:04:31.759 Why was he going to be crucified? 00:04:32.040 --> 00:04:33.699 Well, because of what we see here, 00:04:33.759 --> 00:04:35.459 not just in their hearts, 00:04:35.540 --> 00:04:37.120 but in all the hearts of the people, 00:04:37.220 --> 00:04:38.800 in ourselves today as well. 00:04:38.800 --> 00:04:40.980 We see that he was going to be crucified 00:04:40.980 --> 00:04:43.379 because the world is a sinful world 00:04:43.379 --> 00:04:45.920 that needs a saviour, a redeemer. 00:04:46.960 --> 00:04:51.819 And he came as that saviour who would give his life. 00:04:52.800 --> 00:04:58.600 The son that we read of in this parable, 00:04:58.699 --> 00:05:01.519 the son that the master loved. 00:05:01.519 --> 00:05:04.879 So the question we face is, 00:05:04.939 --> 00:05:06.079 as we were thinking this morning, 00:05:06.599 --> 00:05:10.779 whose voice or what voice are we listening to? 00:05:11.539 --> 00:05:15.839 Do we trust Jesus as the son of God 00:05:15.839 --> 00:05:18.060 or are we looking somewhere else? 00:05:18.139 --> 00:05:19.879 Are we looking to do away with him? 00:05:20.339 --> 00:05:23.439 Are our hearts burning with desire for him 00:05:23.439 --> 00:05:27.139 or burning with anger against him? 00:05:27.139 --> 00:05:30.079 So as you go into chapter 12, 00:05:30.699 --> 00:05:33.919 Jesus here challenges these religious leaders 00:05:33.919 --> 00:05:37.019 with this parable that speaks to them. 00:05:37.519 --> 00:05:39.519 He's speaking right into their hearts. 00:05:39.639 --> 00:05:42.800 He's getting right into their very soul and being 00:05:42.800 --> 00:05:45.959 as to what are they going to do with him. 00:05:47.060 --> 00:05:49.079 The parable is something that the people 00:05:49.079 --> 00:05:50.399 would have been familiar with. 00:05:50.519 --> 00:05:53.560 In those days, very often this kind of situation 00:05:53.560 --> 00:05:54.360 would happen. 00:05:54.360 --> 00:05:58.220 We sometimes call it today absentee landlords 00:05:58.220 --> 00:06:00.660 where somebody owns a vineyard, 00:06:00.759 --> 00:06:02.080 in this case in the scriptures, 00:06:02.379 --> 00:06:03.639 but they're at a distance. 00:06:04.340 --> 00:06:05.639 But they have other workers 00:06:05.639 --> 00:06:07.500 who will come and work it for them. 00:06:07.560 --> 00:06:09.939 But the landlord ultimately owns it 00:06:09.939 --> 00:06:13.639 and will get his share of the profits from it. 00:06:14.620 --> 00:06:15.800 And that's what we see here. 00:06:15.900 --> 00:06:19.199 This is the parable that Jesus uses. 00:06:19.720 --> 00:06:24.000 Verse 1 describes for us a man who planted a vineyard. 00:06:24.000 --> 00:06:25.800 And put everything up that was required, 00:06:25.899 --> 00:06:27.279 a fence around it. 00:06:27.600 --> 00:06:30.800 He dug a wine pit where the wine, 00:06:30.899 --> 00:06:31.819 the juice of the grapes, 00:06:31.899 --> 00:06:33.879 would be collected in the right season. 00:06:34.259 --> 00:06:37.160 He built a tower for a watchman to guard it. 00:06:37.800 --> 00:06:40.120 And he had his workers, his servants, 00:06:40.459 --> 00:06:42.060 to work it for them. 00:06:42.860 --> 00:06:45.399 And he left it in their care. 00:06:46.180 --> 00:06:47.639 But when the season came, 00:06:47.720 --> 00:06:49.720 when the wine was going to be Old Testament imagery. 00:08:46.180 --> 00:08:47.420 And so the leaders 00:08:47.420 --> 00:08:49.160 who he is speaking it to, 00:08:49.460 --> 00:08:50.720 they would have known exactly 00:08:50.720
