purpose in the world by the power of that spirit. 00:00:34.700 --> 00:00:40.079 So we're going to look today at Acts chapter 17, verses 1 through 9. 00:00:40.299 --> 00:00:45.100 And let me remind you before I read that this is God's Word to us. 00:00:45.960 --> 00:00:49.100 It was written for his glory and for our good. 00:00:49.100 --> 00:00:57.920 And as such, we would all do well to listen to Apollonia, I hope I said this right, 00:01:08.900 --> 00:01:13.340 they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 00:01:14.079 --> 00:01:19.379 And Paul went in as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, 00:01:20.340 --> 00:01:25.620 explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, 00:01:25.620 --> 00:01:30.380 and saying, This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ. 00:01:31.400 --> 00:01:34.320 And some of them were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, 00:01:34.380 --> 00:01:38.439 as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women. 00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:40.380 But the Jews were jealous. 00:01:40.960 --> 00:01:44.000 And taking some wicked taken money as security from Jason and the rest, they let them go. 00:02:21.760 --> 00:02:27.860 Now this morning, we're going to structure our study of today's text around four points. 00:02:28.600 --> 00:02:29.680 And they alliterate. 00:02:30.040 --> 00:02:32.000 Praise God, I love it when this works out. 00:02:33.160 --> 00:02:34.620 Four points, and they are as follows. 00:02:34.700 --> 00:02:36.920 I'm going to give them to you quickly, and then we'll go back through them. 00:02:37.640 --> 00:02:39.800 Number one, gospel courage. 00:02:41.260 --> 00:02:44.000 Number two, gospel clarity. 00:02:44.800 --> 00:02:49.120 Number three, gospel conversion. 00:02:50.840 --> 00:02:53.760 And number four, gospel conflict. 00:02:54.700 --> 00:03:00.240 Before we get into those, though, let's look a little bit at the geographic and anthropologic background. 00:03:00.580 --> 00:03:01.160 What's happening? 00:03:01.340 --> 00:03:02.400 Where have they gone? 00:03:02.800 --> 00:03:06.140 What is the significance of the city of Thessalonica? 00:03:06.240 --> 00:03:10.080 You can see there in verse one that they pass through, and here we go again. 00:03:10.080 --> 00:03:12.080 I should practice these words before I get up here. 00:03:13.380 --> 00:03:14.400 Amphipolis, I think. 00:03:14.800 --> 00:03:17.560 And Apollonia, maybe. 00:03:18.120 --> 00:03:22.640 They came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. 00:03:22.800 --> 00:03:32.980 The missionary band that we've been observing through chapter 16 is now traveling southwest along the Roman highway known as the Ignatian Way. 00:03:32.979 --> 00:03:38.259 And we see that the first city is about 30 miles from Philippi. 00:03:38.759 --> 00:03:43.019 The second, another 30 miles from the first. 00:03:43.739 --> 00:03:48.379 And Thessalonica, just under 40 miles from the second. 00:03:48.579 --> 00:03:50.859 I'm avoiding saying those city names again. 00:03:50.860 --> 00:04:00.080 So what's likely is that Luke's record is suggesting to us that they made a three-day journey from Philippi to Thessalonica. 00:04:00.240 --> 00:04:02.360 That's why he lists these cities off. 00:04:02.420 --> 00:04:05.780 Because nothing significant seems to happen there. 00:04:05.780 --> 00:04:18.720 And by the phrase, where there was a synagogue of the Jews in Thessalonica, that probably what's being implied is that there were not synagogues in either of the two first cities. 00:04:18.720 --> 00:04:33.960 Additionally, some have suggested that the missionary band were traveling on horseback provided by the generosity of the Philippian church since they had recently been beaten and imprisoned in Philippi. 00:04:33.959 --> 00:04:37.379 If you look back in chapter 16, you can note that. 00:04:37.979 --> 00:04:43.039 Likely not very strong in frame to travel such a long distance. 00:04:43.319 --> 00:04:51.519 And certainly, 30 miles in a day, for those of you who are hikers, is a stout trek, even when you're in very good health. 00:04:51.599 --> 00:04:58.919 So it's likely that they're now traveling by the equine way to these cities. 00:04:58.920 --> 00:05:05.819 Note also, at this point, that Luke returns to the third person pronouns, they. 00:05:06.400 --> 00:05:11.020 He's previously in chapter 16 been saying we, now he says they. 00:05:11.160 --> 00:05:16.840 And so probably, for unknown reasons, Luke did not accompany them to Thessalonica. 00:05:16.980 --> 00:05:18.920 He probably stayed in Philippi. 00:05:19.860 --> 00:05:20.860 We're not sure why. 00:05:21.840 --> 00:05:27.819 Thessalonica was the capital of Macedonia and had a population of roughly 200,000 people. 00:05:27.819 --> 00:05:29.599 So it's a big city. 00:05:29.740 --> 00:05:34.079 And certainly, by ancient standards, a massive city. 00:05:34.620 --> 00:05:43.759 Think of the size of Birmingham, which is just a little over 200,000 people, or Chattanooga, which is just a little under 200,000 people. 00:05:43.879 --> 00:05:46.539 And that was the city of Thessalonica. 00:05:46.980 --> 00:05:54.060 And it was significant as it was along the Ignatian Highway, as well as being a port city on the Aegean Sea. 00:05:54.060 --> 00:05:57.180 So lots of traffic is flowing through this place. 00:05:57.180 --> 00:06:05.920 And we'll see in some future time that it becomes a very significant place for the advance of the gospel in the known world. 00:06:07.420 --> 00:06:14.720 Further, before we begin our first point, I want to draw our attention to a phrase in our text in verse 6. 00:06:16.100 --> 00:06:17.139 The phrase is this. 00:06:17.139 --> 00:06:24.979 In the accusation, these men who have turned the world upside down. 00:06:25.319 --> 00:06:27.259 I love that phrase. 00:06:27.819 --> 00:06:31.519 These men who have turned the world upside down. 00:06:31.579 --> 00:06:37.379 I hope someday that I'm accused of the same, having turned the world upside down. 00:06:37.379 --> 00:06:44.379 I don't think that their accusers really understood how accurate their accusation was. 00:06:44.699 --> 00:06:48.839 They meant these men are disrupting our Roman rule. 00:06:49.100 --> 00:06:53.060 These men are seeking to set up a different king. 00:06:53.959 --> 00:07:03.079 But isn't it really true that the world as we know it, the world that we walk in, is already upside down? 00:07:03.079 --> 00:07:11.199 The worship of self and the worship of things rather than the worship of the creator God. 00:07:11.979 --> 00:07:18.919 So in many senses, this missionary band is really turning the world right side up. 00:07:19.240 --> 00:07:24.459 Calling people back to the worship of God in Christ. 00:07:24.459 --> 00:07:35.339 So, with that in mind, turning the world upside down, let's look at our four points and let's start with gospel courage. 00:07:35.899 --> 00:07:46.359 So you note that they travel from Philippi, where they had suffered beating and imprisonment at the hands of the Philippian people. 00:07:46.459 --> 00:07:48.979 Not the Philippian believers, but the Philippian people, the Philippians. 00:07:49.719 --> 00:07:51.000 And what do they do? 00:07:51.000 --> 00:08:02.379 They travel through these cities and they go back to the same place in a new city that caused all of the trouble in the last city that they were in. 00:08:03.620 --> 00:08:10.600 The theme of Christian persecution should not be foreign to you as a student of the Bible. 00:08:11.439 --> 00:08:15.500 It also should not be foreign to you as a participant in our study of Acts. 00:08:15.500 --> 00:08:27.699 If you've been here on Sunday mornings with us, it shouldn't surprise you that once again we're going to see new conflict and new courage on behalf of the disciples of Jesus Christ. 00:08:28.259 --> 00:08:29.699 Let me run into you in our study of Acts. 00:08:29.779 --> 00:08:34.179 We have seen the arrest and trial of Peter and John in chapters 3 and 4. 00:08:35.059 --> 00:08:38.000 The apostles' arrest and beating in chapter 5. 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:43.980 Stephen's arrest and martyrdom is the first Christian martyr in chapters 6 and 7. 00:08:44.799 --> 00:08:46.159 We get a break for a chapter. 00:08:46.639 --> 00:08:49.419 The plot to kill Paul in chapter 9. 00:08:49.980 --> 00:08:54.600 The murder of James and another arrest of Peter in chapter 12. 00:08:55.259 --> 00:08:59.279 Barnabas and Paul's opposition on Cyprus in chapter 13. 00:08:59.279 --> 00:09:04.039 The attempted stoning of Barnabas and Paul in Iconium. 00:09:04.319 --> 00:09:08.860 And the successful stoning of Paul in Lystra in chapter 14. 00:09:09.779 --> 00:09:16.879 And Paul and Silas attacked, beaten with rods, and imprisoned in chapter 16. 00:09:17.480 --> 00:09:22.839 As students of the Gospels, this should not surprise us. 00:09:22.840 --> 00:09:29.240 Jesus states to the apostles in John chapter 15, verses 18 and 19, 00:09:29.820 --> 00:09:36.920 If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 00:09:38.360 --> 00:09:43.379 Now the if there, if the world hates you, seems kind of hopeful, doesn't it? 00:09:43.879 --> 00:09:46.780 Like maybe the world won't hate us. 00:09:46.900 --> 00:09:49.120 Is it possible that it won't? 00:09:49.120 --> 00:09:57.139 Jesus seems to say, you may not be hated, but if you are, know that I was hated first. 00:09:57.700 --> 00:10:00.960 But oh, we must read on to verse 19. 00:10:01.940 --> 00:10:02.940 Jesus says in verse 18, 00:10:03.060 --> 00:10:06.120 If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 00:10:06.580 --> 00:10:07.560 Verse 19 says, 00:10:08.100 --> 00:10:13.080 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. 00:10:13.080 --> 00:10:22.240 But because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 00:10:22.960 --> 00:10:32.940 So the if of verse 18 is only conditioned on whether or not you are of the world or chosen out of the world. 00:10:33.080 --> 00:10:37.700 So followers of Jesus Christ will meet opposition. 00:10:37.700 --> 00:10:45.540 Persecution is the norm for the devoted follower of Christ, not the exception. 00:10:46.640 --> 00:10:52.080 Of course, it will take various forms in various places and times. 00:10:52.240 --> 00:10:57.020 We are not likely to be stripped naked and beaten with rods and imprisoned in the U.S. 00:10:57.020 --> 00:11:03.060 But persecution is still normative for the follower of Jesus. 00:11:03.059 --> 00:11:06.359 Paul says in 2 Timothy 3.12, 00:11:06.559 --> 00:11:14.219 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. 00:11:15.119 --> 00:11:18.000 So what does it mean when the world doesn't push back at your faith? 00:11:19.459 --> 00:11:21.859 It's not a faith in Christ at all. 00:11:22.779 --> 00:11:25.699 Or it's a very weak faith. 00:11:25.699 --> 00:11:31.459 It's not a godly life lived out because of that faith. 00:11:31.460 --> 00:11:40.040 In the face of normative persecution, Paul and his companions are courageous. 00:11:40.820 --> 00:11:43.920 They repeat the same process in another town. 00:11:43.980 --> 00:11:45.759 They have not come up with a different strategy. 00:11:46.220 --> 00:11:48.060 They haven't gotten together and Paul said, 00:11:48.180 --> 00:11:50.420 Guys, it's really not working out for us. 00:11:50.720 --> 00:11:53.780 This whole go to the town, go to the synagogue, preach the gospel thing. 00:11:53.860 --> 00:11:56.220 We keep getting in trouble for doing that. 00:11:56.220 --> 00:12:00.980 But they press on and they continue to do the same thing once again. 00:12:01.080 --> 00:12:05.899 Knowing full well that some will believe the gospel and some will reject it. 00:12:06.300 --> 00:12:08.019 They're not being naive. 00:12:08.980 --> 00:12:10.019 They're being bold. 00:12:11.379 --> 00:12:15.580 Paul recounts in 1 Thessalonians 2.2. 00:12:15.580 --> 00:12:20.360 So a letter written to these believers that he's here visiting in our text. 00:12:20.360 --> 00:12:25.360 Though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, 00:12:25.580 --> 00:12:35.039 as you know, we had boldness in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the midst of much conflict. 00:12:36.039 --> 00:12:39.279 So what is the source of such courage? 00:12:39.440 --> 00:12:45.500 What is it that builds us up that we would have that kind of courage? 00:12:45.500 --> 00:12:47.139 It's faith. 00:12:48.220 --> 00:12:55.519 It's faith, an unshakable belief in God's providence and in God's goodness. 00:12:56.519 --> 00:12:59.480 In Deuteronomy 31, verse 6, 00:13:00.019 --> 00:13:01.539 Moses is addressing the Israelites. 00:13:02.039 --> 00:13:06.419 Joshua is about to take over and lead them into the promised land. 00:13:07.019 --> 00:13:08.039 And Moses says to the Israelites, 00:13:08.559 --> 00:13:10.379 Be strong and courageous. 00:13:11.480 --> 00:13:13.879 Do not fear or be in dread of them, 00:13:13.879 --> 00:13:17.899 for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. 00:13:18.240 --> 00:13:21.500 He will not leave you or forsake you. 00:13:22.620 --> 00:13:26.299 A wonderful text that speaks of this is found in Romans chapter 8. 00:13:26.360 --> 00:13:28.159 And I would love for you to turn there with me. 00:13:28.259 --> 00:13:30.720 Keep your finger in Acts chapter 17. 00:13:31.320 --> 00:13:33.340 Romans chapter 8, beginning in verse 31. 00:13:33.340 --> 00:13:51.360 And I'm going to read through verse 39 because I can't help it. 00:13:51.440 --> 00:13:52.899 This text is just too good. 00:13:52.899 --> 00:14:04.340 Paul has just talked about the fact at the beginning of chapter 8 00:14:04.340 --> 00:14:07.340 that there's no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 00:14:07.519 --> 00:14:10.100 So in the midst of our failing as Christians, 00:14:10.100 --> 00:14:12.899 we have great reason to press on into holiness. 00:14:13.620 --> 00:14:17.399 He talks in that chapter about the way in which that happens, 00:14:17.559 --> 00:14:19.319 setting our minds on the things of the Spirit, 00:14:19.320 --> 00:14:23.540 walking by the Spirit so that we will not fulfill the desires of the flesh. 00:14:24.220 --> 00:14:28.540 He talks about the way in which we long for that better place 00:14:28.540 --> 00:14:30.600 where we're delivered from our flesh altogether. 00:14:30.920 --> 00:14:34.420 That one day, even the creation groans for that to happen 00:14:34.420 --> 00:14:37.600 as we walk in this very troubled world. 00:14:38.040 --> 00:14:41.320 He says to us that all synagogue in Thessalonica. 00:17:45.119 --> 00:17:49.460 And Paul goes in as was his custom. 00:17:49.960 --> 00:17:52.819 He had made a practice of doing this. 00:17:52.819 --> 00:17:54.919 Paul began at the synagogue 00:17:54.919 --> 00:17:57.339 where he could find Jews 00:17:57.339 --> 00:17:59.599 and what's often referred to as 00:17:59.599 --> 00:18:01.759 God-fearing Gentiles. 00:18:01.859 --> 00:18:03.839 Whether these are Gentile people, 00:18:03.960 --> 00:18:04.679 non-Jewish people 00:18:04.679 --> 00:18:06.000 that had converted to Judaism, 00:18:06.279 --> 00:18:07.240 or they were simply people 00:18:07.240 --> 00:18:09.179 who were there seeking out God 00:18:09.179 --> 00:18:10.000 and His ways 00:18:10.000 --> 00:18:11.079 and trying to understand 00:18:11.079 --> 00:18:13.039 how they could live appropriately 00:18:13.039 --> 00:18:15.179 in relationship with Him. 00:18:16.019 --> 00:18:17.079 And Paul does this, I think, 00:18:17.119 --> 00:18:17.700 for two reasons. 00:18:17.819 --> 00:18:20.279 Number one, his commitment to his people. 00:18:20.279 --> 00:18:22.460 You can read about that in Romans 9, 00:18:22.460 --> 00:18:24.840 the very beginning of chapter 9. 00:18:24.980 --> 00:18:27.799 Paul, even as the apostle to the Gentiles, 00:18:27.840 --> 00:18:28.519 as he calls himself, 00:18:28.680 --> 00:18:30.400 so had a heart for his people, 00:18:30.500 --> 00:18:33.539 still wanted them to turn to Christ. 00:18:34.400 --> 00:18:34.880 And secondly, 00:18:35.259 --> 00:18:37.420 I believe it was a practical starting point, 00:18:37.980 --> 00:18:38.660 as these were people 00:18:38.660 --> 00:18:40.160 who were familiar with the Scriptures. 00:18:40.480 --> 00:18:42.299 It was a great place to begin 00:18:42.299 --> 00:18:43.819 gospel advance 00:18:43.819 --> 00:18:45.500 with people who were already familiar 00:18:45.500 --> 00:18:47.920 with what we call our Old Testament, 00:18:48.559 --> 00:18:49.920 their Scriptures. 00:18:49.920 --> 00:18:52.300 And as he's there with them 00:18:52.300 --> 00:18:54.300 on three Sabbath days, 00:18:54.460 --> 00:18:55.740 so three weeks, 00:18:57.060 --> 00:18:58.080 could have been longer. 00:18:58.440 --> 00:18:59.700 The book of 1 Thessalonians 00:18:59.700 --> 00:19:01.240 makes us think that he was actually there 00:19:01.240 --> 00:19:02.580 for
