00:07:11.420 --> 00:07:14.819 The idea is we as Christians, we need to learn to look at life, 00:07:14.920 --> 00:07:19.220 all of life, through the lens of Scripture. 00:07:20.580 --> 00:07:23.100 We need to learn to look at life, 00:07:23.280 --> 00:07:24.360 what's going on around about us, 00:07:24.379 --> 00:07:27.200 and be able to discern truth and error, 00:07:27.460 --> 00:07:29.220 right whatever is true, 00:08:02.439 --> 00:08:03.599 whatever is honorable, 00:08:04.179 --> 00:08:05.259 whatever is just, 00:08:05.799 --> 00:08:06.759 whatever is pure, 00:08:06.939 --> 00:08:07.719 whatever is lovely, 00:08:08.219 --> 00:08:09.299 whatever is commendable, 00:08:09.599 --> 00:08:10.879 if there is any excellence, 00:08:11.299 --> 00:08:13.579 if there is anything worthy of 00:08:40.600 In the Greek world, 00:08:41.720 --> 00:08:43.860 here in Philippi, 00:08:44.820 --> 00:08:46.580 Macedonia, where Paul was writing, 00:08:47.980 --> 00:08:50.879 as these people had this read to them, 00:08:50.980 --> 00:08:52.500 Paul's letter read to them, 00:08:52.500 --> 00:08:55.440 they were familiar with these concepts 00:08:55.440 --> 00:08:57.140 being admirable, 00:08:57.880 --> 00:08:59.120 what a person, 00:08:59.380 --> 00:09:00.780 a right, good person, 00:09:01.100 --> 00:09:01.900 would seek to, 00:09:02.740 --> 00:09:04.340 how they would seek to live. 00:09:05.380 --> 00:09:07.540 I want you to look at how Frank Thielman 00:09:07.540 --> 00:09:10.660 describes how these were common, 00:09:11.840 --> 00:09:13.860 desirable qualities in the ancient world. 00:09:14.120 --> 00:09:14.520 He says, 00:09:14.620 --> 00:09:16.680 the list of virtues that Paul asked the Philippians 00:09:16.680 --> 00:09:17.400 to think about 00:09:17.400 --> 00:09:21.240 is not a distinctively Christian list 00:09:21.240 --> 00:09:22.820 and could have been embraced 00:09:22.820 --> 00:09:24.980 by many right-thinking people in ancient times. 00:09:24.980 --> 00:09:27.620 It also assumes that the pagan world 00:09:27.620 --> 00:09:29.860 had some notion of good and bad, 00:09:30.120 --> 00:09:30.759 right and wrong, 00:09:30.919 --> 00:09:32.340 duty and irresponsibility, 00:09:32.659 --> 00:09:33.639 beauty and ugliness, 00:09:33.860 --> 00:09:34.860 honor and shame. 00:09:35.899 --> 00:09:36.980 He says elsewhere, 00:09:37.440 --> 00:09:39.180 Paul speaks of Gentiles 00:09:39.180 --> 00:09:41.659 who have the requirements of God's law 00:09:41.659 --> 00:09:43.039 written on their hearts 00:09:43.039 --> 00:09:44.700 and says that occasionally 00:09:44.700 --> 00:09:46.480 they actually do these things. 00:09:46.539 --> 00:09:47.320 That's in Romans 2. 00:09:47.320 --> 00:09:50.700 What this is describing is that 00:09:50.700 -->
