in a sense at the end of the first act of the good news story as John presents it to us. 00:01:47.480 --> 00:01:51.840 He has played the magnificent overture in the opening of chapter 1, 00:01:52.460 --> 00:01:56.719 where he's introduced us to the main character, which he starts by calling the Word. 00:01:56.719 --> 00:01:59.599 And he's also called it the light. 00:02:00.379 --> 00:02:04.140 And this is the light that does two things in this book. 00:02:04.920 --> 00:02:06.400 It's the light that is. 00:02:07.500 --> 00:02:08.699 The light who is creator. 00:02:09.419 --> 00:02:11.099 The 00:05:57.900 and asks her for a drink. 00:05:58.920 --> 00:06:01.600 That is a classic, almost cliché, 00:06:01.740 --> 00:06:03.680 chat-up line in the ancient world. 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:06.640 And you'll see that in the Old Testament. 00:06:07.260 --> 00:06:09.120 That is exactly how Abraham's servant 00:06:09.120 --> 00:06:10.439 found a wife for Isaac. 00:06:11.280 --> 00:06:13.280 Jacob too, who had actually given this well. 00:06:13.840 --> 00:06:15.640 Maybe it was even at this well that they met. 00:06:16.300 --> 00:06:17.500 He'd given this well to Samaria. 00:06:17.600 --> 00:06:19.020 That's exactly how he met Rachel. 00:06:19.900 --> 00:06:21.720 That's exactly how Moses met his wife. 00:06:21.720 --> 00:06:24.680 That if you'd watched a rom-com in those days 00:06:24.680 --> 00:06:26.840 where the man goes to talk to a woman at the well, 00:06:27.120 --> 00:06:30.120 you'd have complained about how unoriginal this story was. 00:06:32.820 --> 00:06:36.080 Could it possibly be that Jesus is doing the same thing here? 00:06:37.820 --> 00:06:40.380 Given everything that John has said about Jesus so far, 00:06:40.500 --> 00:06:42.440 it is a pretty right to take the sandal of an unworthy redeemer. 00:06:59.719 --> 00:07:01.259 Jesus is the worthy bridegroom. 00:07:01.360 --> 00:07:03.120 And John has no right to take his place. 00:07:04.879 --> 00:07:07.839 He's the one who was the true master of the wedding feast at Cana. 00:07:08.720 --> 00:07:11.139 But he made it very clear then that this was not his time. 00:07:12.040 --> 00:07:13.319 This was not his hour. 00:07:13.319 --> 00:07:16.959 But the way John has spoken about him, 00:07:17.019 --> 00:07:18.939 even in calling him a bridegroom, 00:07:19.040 --> 00:07:21.860 he has made it sound like it's about something much greater 00:07:21.860 --> 00:07:24.180 than just finding him a woman to marry. 00:07:25.819 --> 00:07:27.659 So when we read Jesus saying, 00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:29.939 what is basically this classic Chesot line, 00:07:30.180 --> 00:07:31.699 it catches us off guard. 00:07:33.139 --> 00:07:35.600 You've got to wonder what on earth is going on. 00:07:35.600 --> 00:07:38.620 Have I missed something so far? 00:07:40.120 --> 00:07:43.280 Now you might be helped right in thinking about all the times 00:07:43.280 --> 00:07:45.620 that water has come up in John's gospel, 00:07:46.080 --> 00:07:48.040 and every time water has come up so far, 00:07:48.240 --> 00:07:49.920 it's never just about the water. 00:07:51.060 --> 00:07:52.920 So there might be something more going on. 00:07:54.400 --> 00:07:56.060 But you're still bound to ask, 00:07:56.120 --> 00:07:58.660 have I misunderstood what Jesus is looking for? 00:07:59.600 --> 00:08:02.280 Would you take me through this again, John? 00:08:02.279 --> 00:08:05.359 And that is exactly what he does. 00:08:06.799 --> 00:08:08.819 And if we're surprised, we're not alone, 00:08:08.959 --> 00:08:12.059 because the Samaritan woman was pretty surprised herself. 00:08:13.379 --> 00:08:15.819 Our surprise is based on everything we've known about her, 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:17.079 about Jesus so far. 00:08:17.500 --> 00:08:20.619 Her surprise too was based on what she knew about him. 00:08:20.779 --> 00:08:24.079 Except all she knew about him was that he's a Jewish man. 00:08:24.599 --> 00:08:25.679 That's all she knows about him. 00:08:26.819 --> 00:08:29.379 And just as we're starting to ask ourselves questions, 00:08:29.379 --> 00:08:34.120 it's the woman who actually gets to ask the questions to Jesus himself. 00:08:35.559 --> 00:08:37.600 And so this woman is our guide, in a way, 00:08:37.720 --> 00:08:40.259 as we look for some answers from Jesus. for her, the first step, 00:08:51.919 --> 00:08:52.960 as far as she knows, 00:08:53.500 --> 00:08:55.720 is this man has nothing to do with me. 00:08:55.720 --> 00:08:59.160 This man has nothing to do with me. 00:08:59.220 --> 00:09:00.300 That's where she starts off. 00:09:02.060 --> 00:09:03.100 That's what she thinks. 00:09:03.160 --> 00:09:04.899 And she might understandably assume 00:09:04.899 --> 00:09:06.420 that the feeling is mutual. 00:09:06.840 --> 00:09:08.580 She would expect a Jewish man to think, 00:09:08.779 --> 00:09:10.500 this woman has nothing to do with me. 00:09:11.120 --> 00:09:11.980 A Samaritan woman. 00:09:13.480 --> 00:09:15.259 But here he is asking for a drink. 00:09:16.700 --> 00:09:17.820 And as she points out to him, 00:09:18.200 --> 00:09:21.220 how weird it is for him to speak to her. 00:09:21.320 --> 00:09:21.720 Verse 9, 00:09:21.720 --> 00:09:25.060 How is it that you, a Jew, Jewish man, 00:09:25.399 --> 00:09:28.120 ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria? 00:09:29.779 --> 00:09:31.980 John points out how weird it is in verse 10. 00:09:32.080 --> 00:09:32.740 She's not wrong. 00:09:34.080 --> 00:09:36.080 Jews don't have dealings with Samaritans. 00:09:37.440 --> 00:09:39.360 Not to mention how strange it is for a man 00:09:39.360 --> 00:09:41.019 to be speaking to a woman out in public. 00:09:42.680 --> 00:09:44.259 And yet Jesus' answer is basically, 00:09:44.420 --> 00:09:45.840 it isn't weird in the slightest. 00:09:45.840 --> 00:09:48.980 Because if you knew what I have to offer, 00:09:49.259 --> 00:09:51.139 if you knew what the gift of God is 00:09:51.139 --> 00:09:53.139 that I am proposing to the world, 00:09:53.680 --> 00:09:55.340 you'd be asking me for what I have. 00:09:56.340 --> 00:09:58.340 So why wouldn't I ask you for what you have to offer? 00:10:00.340 --> 00:10:02.500 It's rather an intriguing answer, isn't it? 00:10:03.460 --> 00:10:04.399 So she takes the bait.
