writer, goes further in describing the heart of a person who lives without God as more than just restless. 00:02:58.539 --> 00:03:03.959 Solomon reveals, we've seen a little bit of it, we're going to Discovering What Matters Most because that's what Solomon is trying to help us do throughout this book. 00:07:13.360 --> 00:07:15.660 He's pointing out what matters most. 00:07:16.640 --> 00:07:17.939 You have to excuse me. 00:07:18.580 --> 00:07:21.840 He's pointing out what matters most by pointing out two things. 00:07:22.220 --> 00:07:25.700 Number one, the many things that do not ultimately matter. 00:07:26.220 --> 00:07:27.540 And that's the majority of the book. 00:07:27.540 --> 00:07:34.140 Most of this book, Solomon is writing from the perspective of somebody who has no relationship Solomon wants us to learn from his mistakes. 00:07:50.319 --> 00:07:52.280 Or at least from what he's telling us. 00:07:52.279 --> 00:08:05.059 Solomon wants us to understand where we won't find that which we really want, really need to make our lives more purposeful. 00:08:06.199 --> 00:08:13.559 And then he tells us the few things, but the important things that really do matter. 00:08:14.139 --> 00:08:17.379 Let's look now at some of the things that matter to most people. 00:08:18.379 --> 00:08:23.220 But Solomon learned firsthand they don't really, when all is said and done, they don't really matter. 00:08:23.720 --> 00:08:26.280 Number one, the things in life that do not satisfy. 00:08:27.220 --> 00:08:32.779 That's going to be from chapter 1, verse 12, through chapter 2, verse 23. 00:08:41.100 We're going to read some of them, but not all of them. 00:08:41.559 --> 00:08:50.419 If you just sort of walk through those verses, that's sort of like a diary of Solomon's search for true satisfaction and meaning in life. 00:08:50.960 --> 00:08:51.679 Let's look at it. 00:08:51.740 --> 00:08:55.139 Number one, wisdom will not ultimately satisfy. 00:08:55.139 --> 00:09:00.360 And he points that out in verse 12 and verse 16. 00:09:00.600 --> 00:09:01.419 I want you to look at it. 00:09:02.500 --> 00:09:12.939 I, the preacher, have been king over Israel and Jerusalem, and I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven. 00:09:13.399 --> 00:09:19.679 It is an unhappy business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. 00:09:19.980 --> 00:09:20.960 Look at verse 16. 00:09:20.960 --> 00:09:28.060 I said in my heart, I have acquired great wisdom, surpassing all who were over Jerusalem before me. 00:09:28.519 --> 00:09:33.000 And my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge. 00:09:34.480 --> 00:09:40.360 Solomon really did grow in wisdom and knowledge and understanding. 00:09:41.220 --> 00:09:48.680 I'm going to guess most people in this room, you know that God gave Solomon a special gift of wisdom. 00:09:48.679 --> 00:09:50.939 It's described in 1 Kings chapter 3. 00:09:51.679 --> 00:09:58.079 At the beginning of his kingdom, as beginning of his reign as king, Solomon's heart was right with God. 00:09:59.000 --> 00:10:00.679 God even asked him, what do you want? 00:10:01.179 --> 00:10:04.059 I'll give you anything you want as king over my people. 00:10:04.399 --> 00:10:06.339 And Solomon's reply was, I want to be wise. 00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:12.259 I want you to give me wisdom so that I can serve your purpose, help your people. 00:10:12.259 --> 00:10:14.980 And God gave it to him. 00:10:15.919 --> 00:10:22.659 God gave him such wisdom that no one ever lived was wise like Solomon. 00:10:23.519 --> 00:10:25.700 But that's not the only kind of wisdom he had. 00:10:26.340 --> 00:10:27.700 Solomon studied life. 00:10:28.779 --> 00:10:32.019 I mean, he was real, he was real like a scientist and a philosopher. 00:10:32.559 --> 00:10:33.700 He tried things. 00:10:33.819 --> 00:10:34.939 He thought through things. 00:10:35.019 --> 00:10:35.840 He did research. 00:10:35.840 --> 00:10:39.759 And as he did this, his worldly wisdom grew. 00:10:40.420 --> 00:10:43.160 And that's not a slap at the kind of wisdom I'm talking about. 00:10:43.720 --> 00:10:45.820 It's not contrary to God's wisdom. 00:10:46.060 --> 00:10:47.899 You see, all truth is God's truth. 00:10:48.200 --> 00:10:49.980 If something's true, it's just truth. 00:10:50.160 --> 00:10:52.019 It's just the way God made things. 00:10:53.379 --> 00:10:54.639 All truth is God's truth. 00:10:55.180 --> 00:10:57.580 And so as Solomon studied and learned, 00:10:57.580 --> 00:11:05.759 he grew wise about all kinds of things in this world. 00:11:07.259 --> 00:11:08.840 But as time went on, 00:11:10.639 --> 00:11:19.540 Solomon stopped thinking about how God was involved in his life and his kingdom. 00:11:20.840 --> 00:11:24.780 Solomon started looking too much at just this world, life under the sun. 00:11:24.779 --> 00:11:29.799 And his relationship with the Lord deteriorated. 00:11:31.299 --> 00:11:34.579 He failed to use his wisdom in God-honoring ways. 00:11:38.439 --> 00:11:40.399 Truth is, he started chasing women. 00:11:41.839 --> 00:11:46.319 And women, many wives, 1 Kings 11 tells us, 00:11:47.279 --> 00:11:48.620 they took him away from the Lord. 00:11:49.339 --> 00:11:50.980 And they not only took him away from the Lord, 00:11:50.980 --> 00:11:56.120 Solomon put his focus on false gods of these pagan women 00:11:56.120 --> 00:11:57.240 that he wasn't supposed to have. 00:11:58.360 --> 00:12:01.440 And it resulted in Solomon and his family 00:12:01.440 --> 00:12:04.600 and the whole kingdom suffering disaster. 00:12:05.879 --> 00:12:11.000 All because wise Solomon acted like a pure fool 00:12:11.000 --> 00:12:13.659 as he got older in life. 00:12:14.879 --> 00:12:17.220 Solomon even studied, he goes on in verse 17, 00:12:17.220 --> 00:12:22.560 the opposites of sanity and wisdom, madness and folly. 00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:23.840 Look at that, verse 17. 00:12:26.440 --> 00:12:31.060 And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. 00:12:31.440 --> 00:12:36.279 I perceive that it is also but a striving after wind. 00:12:38.360 --> 00:12:42.139 Solomon wanted to know everything, what's wise, what's not. 00:12:42.840 --> 00:12:45.220 How wise people live, how fools live. 00:12:45.220 --> 00:12:48.879 He wanted to learn from
