00:00:38.700 And instead, God has anointed David. 00:00:39.159 --> 00:00:42.560 So it's the end of King Saul and the rise of King David. 00:00:42.659 --> 00:00:46.120 And this is a very important to see the life of David and God's powerful sustaining him. 00:09:58.299 --> 00:10:04.399 So first, how miserable a person becomes like Saul who rejects God's kingship. 00:10:04.399 --> 00:10:08.879 father's house anymore. 00:10:54.120 --> 00:10:59.840 Now, that's nice because you're in the royal court and there's prestige, but the wording is very strong. 00:10:59.940 --> 00:11:01.180 He would not let him go. 00:11:02.180 --> 00:11:06.639 I mean, if David's 15 years old and he's been used to tending the sheep, he cares about them, 00:11:06.919 --> 00:11:07.840 makes sure they're cared for. 00:11:08.060 --> 00:11:10.180 Now the king is controlling this man. 00:11:10.720 --> 00:11:12.600 We know he's a growing threat to Saul. 00:11:12.600 --> 00:11:18.060 Saul loved his music, but he's warrior that God is blessing in the battle. 00:11:27.860 --> 00:11:30.440 So look at verse 5, chapter 18, verse 5. 00:11:30.899 --> 00:11:34.360 Saul sets David over the men of war that day. 00:11:34.920 --> 00:11:39.500 And we see that as he goes out, he becomes promoted more and more. 00:11:39.500 --> 00:11:41.340 He's given a thousand men and more and more. 00:11:41.419 --> they gave God the glory for the victory after they crossed the sea. 00:13:01.539 --> 00:13:04.299 They went out and they had their tambourines and dancing. 00:13:04.439 --> 00:13:06.139 It's very --> 00:13:38.879 The women came out singing and dancing, and who did they come to meet? 00:13:38.959 --> 00:13:40.339 Look at verse 6 very closely. 00:13:40.340 --> 00:13:44.220 They came to meet King Saul. 00:13:44.920 --> 00:13:47.740 Did King Saul go fight in this battle against Goliath? 00:13:49.320 --> 00:13:53.960 But that's who they are trained now to come and give praises to. 00:13:54.980 that's the hero they're holding up, has slain his thousands. 00:14:40.319 --> 00:14:42.399 You know, big number, using exaggeration. 00:14:42.840 --> 00:14:45.319 And then it sets up a second line that says, 00:14:45.899 --> 00:14:48.639 David, another hero, has slain ten thousands. 00:14:48.639 --> 00:14:56.819 And in this song, they're using a Hebrew literary device called synonymous parallelism. 00:14:57.460 --> 00:15:02.000 These two lines are parallel one to the other, but they're not saying something different. 00:15:02.319 --> 00:15:03.860 They're saying something synonymous. relationship with the Lord. 00:16:32.899 --> 00:16:34.039 That's the end of that quote. 00:16:34.039 --> 00:16:44.339 Saul is envious and enraged and worked up as a result of him having rejected God 00:33:52.000 --> 00:33:54.640 Only be valiant for me and fight the Lord's battles. 00:33:54.640 --> 00:34:00.980 For Saul thought, let my hand not be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines David said to Saul, who am I and what is my life or my father's family in Israel that I should be son-in-law to the king? 00:35:01.340 --> 00:35:02.320 He remains humble. 00:35:03.340 --> 00:35:03.920 Verse 19. 00:35:04.039 --> 00:35:12.920 It happened at the time when Merib, Saul's daughter, should have been given to David that she was given to Adriel, the Maholothite, as a wife instead. 00:35:12.920 --> 00:35:15.220 Now, that's just a slap in the face. 00:35:15.840 --> 00:35:21.099 If the first one was unjust, at least Laban gave Leah and Rachel eventually to Jacob. 00:35:21.619 --> to stir David up, one commentator thought, into anger so that David would finally break out in some indecency of word or deed, 00:35:57.319 --> 00:36:02.719 which would give Saul the occasion to prosecute David with the law and disqualify him. 00:36:02.719 --> 00:36:08.980 If that commentator is right, this was a ploy to try to bring out a reaction out of David, 00:36:09.699 --> 00:36:12.500 to show that David is an unworthy ruler. 00:36:13.519 --> 00:36:17.679 He's now going against the king, and this should be so obvious to all. 00:36:20.239 --> 00:36:27.959 In Psalm 55, verse 21, David speaks of his enemy as one whose words are smoother than butter, 00:36:28.599 --> 00:36:30.879 but there is war in his heart. 00:36:30.880 --> 00:36:33.420 Perhaps he was thinking of Saul. 00:36:35.200 --> 00:36:40.860 But when God is your king, he helps his servants to remain humble, even before God, 00:36:41.780 --> 00:36:44.599 no matter what injustices you suffer. 00:36:46.119 --> 00:36:47.640 Fifth encouragement is this. 00:36:47.740 --> 00:36:54.519 When God is your king, you get to trust the Lord to redeem even something designed to hurt you, 00:36:54.860 --> 00:36:57.019 Philistines may be against him. 00:37:17.280 --> 00:37:20.059 In verse 25, he explains his plan. 00:37:20.059 --> 00:37:28.799 The king does not desire any dowry, but 100 foreskins of the Philistines to take vengeance on the king's enemies. 00:37:29.440 --> 00:37:34.539 But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. 00:37:34.539 --> 00:37:41.860 To circumcise a Philistine would be the greatest offense to them. 00:37:42.639 --> 00:37:44.739 It would be a disgrace, a reproach. 00:37:45.119 --> 00:37:50.960 The Philistines had mocked the Israelites for practicing present that to the king of Israel was to bring on all of the Philistines could have to destroy whoever did that to their soldiers. 00:38:05.940 --> 00:38:07.539 This was Saul's plan. 00:38:08.199 --> 00:38:15.079 It was to exasperate the enemies of God, the Philistines, so much that the whole nation would now put David as the most wanted, 00:38:15.519 --> 00:38:17.399 that they will come and get rid of. 00:38:17.400 --> 00:38:26.639 But because God is the true king, he preserved David and even used that to redeem his purposes, 00:38:27.280 --> 00:38:32.940 to give David even more recognition as being a man on whom God, his presence was resting. 00:38:34.240 --> 00:38:40.220 And the sixth and final encouragement for today of how God strengthened David is this. 00:38:40.219 --> 00:38:47.799
