single 00:00:26.239 --> 00:00:34.239 text this would probably be my choice how many of you know Romans chapter 6 verse 23 by heart you 00:00:34.239 --> 00:00:43.280 take a stab at it and you'll get there okay for the wages of sin is death what happens when we sin 00:00:43.280 --> 00:00:54.959 the outcome is eventual death but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord 00:00:54.960 --> 00:01:03.920 I trust that's a verse that that you know I mean that that if you were to kind of compress your life 00:01:03.920 --> 00:01:11.280 down into one central statement about who you are and what counts as supremely important that that 00:01:11.280 --> 00:01:17.960 that text would be one of those that you hold on to because at the heart of our life and our existence 00:01:17.959 --> 00:01:26.119 is this issue of whether or not we are in relationship with Christ and were it not 00:01:27.239 --> 00:01:33.719 for the fact that God sent his son to die on the cross for my sins and for your sins the truth of 00:01:33.719 --> 00:01:38.919 the matter is is that we would not have the privilege and the hope of relationship with the 00:01:38.919 --> 00:01:44.759 Lord Jesus Christ what we are doing this morning and you see these elements up here you see the the 00:01:44.760 --> 00:01:51.960 bread and the cup what we're doing is we call the Lord's table or communion love feast is another 00:01:51.960 --> 00:01:58.840 term that the scripture uses and and I as I was praying earlier in the week last week actually thinking 00:01:58.840 --> 00:02:03.160 about the particulars of what we're going to look at this morning I thought it'd be appropriate for us 00:02:03.160 --> 00:02:09.240 to kind of take some time and and allow the scriptures to inform us remind us again of what we're doing 00:02:09.240 --> 00:02:19.800 there's a lot of different opinions about what happens in communion some people have the idea that 00:02:19.800 --> 00:02:26.120 taking communion is something that in some senses makes or breaks their relationship with Christ 00:02:27.400 --> 00:02:33.480 I remember talking with an individual who said to me boy I I'm I'm feeling a little uncertain about my 00:02:33.479 --> 00:02:40.599 spiritual state not well that's a curious thing to say to a pastor and so a natural and logical why is that well I 00:02:40.599 --> 00:02:42.599 haven't taken communion I 00:02:43.959 --> 00:02:48.199 I want to tell you something taking communion doesn't make you better or make you worse 00:02:49.879 --> 00:02:52.839 there's nothing in the act itself necessarily 00:02:54.039 --> 00:02:56.599 that has a saving effect 00:02:57.399 --> 00:03:03.159 it's not like when you die you get to say to Jesus well I get to come in because I took communion yesterday 00:03:03.479 --> 00:03:11.239 on the other hand there are some who believe that that communion is something that is something we 00:03:11.239 --> 00:03:16.120 shouldn't celebrate all the time after all when you celebrate something regularly guess what happens 00:03:17.479 --> 00:03:23.159 becomes too familiar I I don't buy into that and I'll get that point in a minute but but I want you to 00:03:23.159 --> 00:03:29.319 understand when we think about what we do when we come to this table the best way to figure out what's 00:03:29.319 --> 00:03:36.120 actually taking place is to do what is to open the Bible everybody said that well that's what we're 00:03:36.120 --> 00:03:41.079 expecting pastor we really want to look at scriptures and see what the Bible has to say 00:03:41.639 --> 00:03:47.560 so turn in your Bible to first Corinthians chapter 11 and we are going to take a broad look 00:03:49.079 --> 00:03:51.479 at verses 23 through 34 00:03:51.479 --> 00:04:03.239 as we look at the passage we pick up there in verse 23 and I will read the passage till we come to verse 26 it says for I 00:04:03.239 --> 00:04:09.639 received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread 00:04:10.759 --> 00:04:16.120 and when he'd given thanks he broke it and said this is my body which is for you do this in remembrance of me 00:04:16.120 --> 00:04:23.480 in the same way he also took the cup after supper saying this cup is the new covenant in my blood do 00:04:23.480 --> 00:04:31.240 this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me for as often as you drink this bread 00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:41.160 help me here as you eat this bread and drink this cup you proclaim the Lord's death till he comes 00:04:41.160 --> 00:05:55.240 --> 00:06:00.199 So as we begin our passage we want to recognize that when we take the Lord's table 00:06:00.199 --> 00:06:07.479 one of the things that we do is that we value reminders at the very beginning look there in verse 26 00:06:07.479 --> 00:06:08.439 it says this 00:06:09.800 --> 00:06:15.959 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup you proclaim the Lord's death 00:06:16.680 --> 00:06:17.719 till he comes 00:06:19.079 --> 00:06:25.560 One of the ongoing questions that that floats around in different circles is how often should you practice the Lord's table? 00:06:25.560 --> 00:06:32.120 How often should you have communion? How often should a congregation be involved in in taking the bread and the elements? 00:06:32.120 --> 00:06:32.839 And there are some 00:06:33.560 --> 00:06:36.120 There are some groups of people that take it every Sunday 00:06:36.759 --> 00:06:38.920 There are some that take it once a quarter 00:06:39.639 --> 00:06:44.199 There are some that even take it less than that and I remember in one case asking a 00:06:44.840 --> 00:06:44.840 00:06:44.840 --> 00:06:48.040 A group of pastors, so why is it that you celebrate once a quarter? 00:06:48.279 --> 00:06:51.800 And the answer was this a very interesting answer to me a curious one 00:06:51.800 --> 00:06:55.079 It said well, if you take it too often it becomes familiar 00:06:56.920 --> 00:06:57.160 I 00:06:57.160 --> 00:06:59.079 I remember being a little befuddled by that 00:06:59.079 --> 00:07:04.600 So how is it that taking something less often that you're supposed to do to remind yourself of things? 00:07:04.920 --> 00:07:09.400 How is it that that taking it less often becomes more special now? 00:07:09.400 --> 00:07:10.199 remember to 00:07:11.319 --> 00:07:17.560 God in the old testament gave explicit commands as to how often the passover was to be celebrated 00:07:17.560 --> 00:07:19.879 How often did you do that once a year? 00:07:19.879 --> 00:07:27.240 There were other specific times in which the nation of israel had particular feast days that had particular 00:07:27.719 --> 00:07:28.439 focuses 00:07:28.439 --> 00:07:33.319 When jesus gave instruction regarding the matter of the lord's table 00:07:33.319 --> 00:07:41.959 It is very interesting that he did not give to his people at that time any express directions as to how often we're to take it 00:07:41.959 --> 00:07:48.039 And so when we think about this question recognize that what the text tells us 00:07:48.839 --> 00:07:52.919 Informs us of his thought how often should we take it? 00:07:52.919 --> 00:07:54.199 The answer is whenever 00:07:54.199 --> 00:07:59.959 Whenever you choose in our fellowship. We have broken that down and there's no arbitrary 00:08:01.399 --> 00:08:06.279 Kind of mandate necessarily, but the rule of matter is that we generally take it about once a month 00:08:06.279 --> 00:08:11.159 Any of you that pay careful attention and I wouldn't give you extra points if you do 00:08:11.639 --> 00:08:15.719 But if you pay careful attention you notice that we generally do it about once a month 00:08:16.439 --> 00:08:20.839 We don't do it always on the same day. Sometimes we do it sunday morning 00:08:21.239 --> 00:08:29.079 Sometimes we do it sunday night sometime we do it wednesday sometime we do it sunday school and the reason for the variety in part 00:08:29.079 --> 00:08:36.360 Is to provide a little bit of diversity to kind of make you think in different frames and kind of challenge you 00:08:36.600 --> 00:08:43.799 Outside the space of well today is communion. I got turned my brain off. I know what we do pastor's going to go to first corinthians 11 again 00:08:44.360 --> 00:08:46.360 You know, it's like we've been there 00:08:48.519 --> 00:08:49.720 I want you to understand can do this whenever so 00:09:01.639 --> 00:09:07.879 That being said remembering our lord's death for our sins is an important part of our relationship and that's what we're doing this morning recognize that it's not repetition that is at the heart of your spiritual struggle 00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:41.959 The fact that you find a lack of affection at the moment is reflective of where your 00:11:32.500 I cannot think 00:11:32.500 --> 00:11:42.219 Of hardly any other spiritual truth for the believer that is more important than comprehending the unbelievable love of christ for you 00:11:42.219 --> 00:11:48.740 And so when you take that bread and you take that cup one of the things that I want you to say in your heart this morning is 00:11:48.740 --> 00:11:50.019 Jesus loves me 00:11:50.019 --> 00:11:56.039 I understand being amazed that he does 00:11:56.039 --> 00:11:57.879 I'm when I stop and think about me 00:11:57.879 --> 00:12:01.019 I just can't get over it of the resurrection 00:15:33.860 --> 00:15:37.039 But the frame in which he starts is the gospel 00:15:37.039 --> 00:15:38.579 Now let's look at verse 3 00:15:38.580 --> 00:15:43.580 For I delivered to you as of first importance 00:15:43.580 --> 00:15:44.740 Do you know what he's saying? 00:15:45.360 --> 00:15:46.980 This is the most important thing 00:15:46.980 --> 00:15:50.139 This is the most important thing 00:15:50.139 --> 00:15:52.740 So let's try this so we understand the comparison 00:15:52.740 --> 00:15:56.940 You can go theoretically about three weeks without food 00:15:56.940 --> 00:16:19.099 And it is something that we ought to refresh our heart with 00:16:19.099 --> 00:16:20.539 On a regular basis 00:16:20.539 --> 00:16:21.759 What is the gospel? 00:16:23.079 --> 00:16:25.339 I want you to recognize there in the passage 00:16:25.339 --> 00:16:28.779 It says that Jesus died for our sins 00:16:28.779 --> 00:16:31.059 What does that mean? 00:16:32.179 --> 00:16:34.480 Well for one thing it means that I was a sinner 00:16:34.480 --> 00:16:36.039 And Jesus died in my place 00:16:36.039 --> 00:16:38.399 I love that fact 00:16:38.399 --> 00:16:41.319 Because what it tells me is that 00:16:41.319 --> 00:16:44.379 God sent his son the Lord Jesus Christ 00:16:44.379 --> 00:16:46.620 To pay the penalty for my sins 00:16:46.620 --> 00:16:49.879 And Jesus died to satisfy the debt 00:16:49.879 --> 00:16:52.319 And the judgment of God against me 00:16:52.319 --> 00:16:54.439 While it is true 00:16:54.439 --> 00:16:57.179 That jealousy 00:16:57.179
