at 1 John chapter 3, verse 1, just as an intro, 00:05:50.460 --> 00:05:52.640 and then more particularly at verse 16. 00:05:52.639 --> 00:05:53.620 But let me read that to you. 00:05:53.680 --> 00:05:54.180 It says there, 00:05:54.800 --> 00:05:58.300 See what kind of love the Father has given unto us, 00:05:59.060 --> 00:06:02.439 that we should be called the children of God. 00:06:04.599 --> 00:06:08.319 I hope you have never gotten over that reality. 00:06:10.959 --> 00:06:16.899 That the unbelievable blessing that you have of being God's child 00:06:16.899 --> 00:06:21.000 and having a personal relationship with the Lord of glory 00:06:21.000 --> 00:06:27.339 is something that at every moment puts a smile on your face when you stop and think about it. 00:06:28.620 --> 00:06:37.979 In fact, it is the remedy to much of our moodiness and surliness and unhappiness in life. 00:06:38.039 --> 00:06:38.959 Wouldn't you agree with that? 00:06:38.959 --> 00:06:42.579 Here's the fact that this thought ends up having an effect upon the way we live. 00:07:17.959 --> 00:07:27.159 And if you are sitting here this morning and your heart is touched with the sweetness of the truth 00:07:27.159 --> 00:07:31.219 that you're the child of God, well, one of the takeaways as a result of that 00:07:31.219 --> 00:07:35.959 is that you end up with a greater sensitivity to the issue of personal sin. 00:07:37.719 --> 00:07:41.639 This morning, as I was spending time in prayer, 00:07:41.639 --> 00:07:50.860 I found myself lamenting, just grieving of heart with one of the recurring battles of my own heart. 00:07:51.079 --> 00:07:51.939 How many of you have those? 00:07:52.199 --> 00:07:53.779 A couple areas where, you know, just like, 00:07:54.219 --> 00:07:54.699 You know what? 00:07:54.819 --> 00:07:57.019 I really wish this didn't happen anymore, 00:07:57.120 --> 00:08:02.479 and I didn't have those kind of lousy, low-life, unacceptable, godless thoughts. 00:08:14.439 And I remember thinking of the passage in Hebrews 1, verse 9, 00:08:14.560 --> 00:08:20.979 where the author, unknown, recites a passage in the Psalms. 00:08:22.180 --> 00:08:25.159 Thou hast loved righteousness and hated iniquity. 00:08:25.259 --> 00:08:29.899 And I found myself this morning as I was in prayer and preparation for the Lord's table 00:08:29.899 --> 00:08:38.480 just saying, Lord, I so hate sin, and I long to grow in grace. 00:08:40.319 --> 00:08:44.939 And in the passage we see in 1 John is, hey, we are the children of God, 00:08:45.159 --> 00:08:48.620 and the truth of the matter is is that we're not what we will be, 00:08:48.779 --> 00:08:53.759 but, man, thinking about it has an effect upon our lives. 00:08:53.759 --> 00:09:02.059 And as the apostle unpacks the portion of passage, 00:09:02.679 --> 00:09:04.419 he deals with this issue of sin, 00:09:04.480 --> 00:09:08.340 and he brings it around to a very, very practical challenge in terms of relationship 00:09:08.340 --> 00:09:13.860 and really challenges us to kind of think through the issue of 00:09:13.860 --> 00:09:20.319 whether or not our relationships with one another are marked by the love of Christ. 00:09:20.320 --> 00:09:26.080 And I'm not going to take the time to deal with that piece of it. 00:09:26.140 --> 00:09:29.900 What I want to do is have you put your finger on verse 16 00:09:29.900 --> 00:09:35.540 because it is an absolutely central truth in the believer's life. 00:09:37.040 --> 00:09:45.480 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us. 00:09:45.480 --> 00:09:57.920 It's appropriate that a passage such as this be part of our time around the Lord's table. 00:09:58.840 --> 00:10:00.399 There's a connectedness. 00:10:01.440 --> 00:10:05.899 You remember that when Paul is correcting the church at Corinth 00:10:05.899 --> 00:10:09.120 regarding their time around the Lord's table, 00:10:09.340 --> 00:10:11.920 he reminds them that when we take these elements, 00:10:12.399 --> 00:10:15.399 he says, you do show forth the Lord's death. 00:10:15.480 --> 00:10:20.720 The bread and the cup are reminders of Jesus dying for us. 00:10:20.820 --> 00:10:24.700 And so here we are in a companion passage over in 1 John 3 00:10:24.700 --> 00:10:30.680 where the apostle, as he is reminding us of our relationship with Christ, 00:10:30.899 --> 00:10:33.180 and he's reminding us of the significance of that, 00:10:33.420 --> 00:10:36.340 he makes this kind of foundational statement. 00:10:37.800 --> 00:10:39.460 This is what love looks like. 00:10:41.680 --> 00:10:44.340 Jesus died for us. 00:10:44.340 --> 00:10:45.340 Jesus died for us. 00:10:45.340 --> 00:10:49.440 And since we are at the table and we are going to be taking these elements, 00:10:49.580 --> 00:10:53.320 I think it's appropriate for us to recognize what we're not doing today. 00:10:55.460 --> 00:11:03.200 For one thing, we recognize that the enemy of our souls is great at leading us astray, 00:11:03.200 --> 00:11:10.060 and even we who are well-framed and relatively mature believers, 00:11:10.160 --> 00:11:14.360 how many of you would admit that there are times when your mind just is not connected 00:11:14.360 --> 00:11:16.080 to the things it should be connected to? 00:11:17.420 --> 00:11:21.440 I mean, there are some of us here that perhaps spend an hour, 00:11:21.500 --> 00:11:22.960 an hour and a half in our devotional life. 00:11:23.020 --> 00:11:24.340 We get up early in the morning and do it, 00:11:24.540 --> 00:11:28.600 and I can tell you this, that even when you're engaged in that level of discipline, 00:11:28.600 --> 00:11:32.740 there are times that you can go through the motions and your heart's not in it. 00:11:34.259 --> 00:11:37.639 And so I would appeal to you that when we come to this table that we are careful 00:11:37.639 --> 00:11:42.120 that we don't just get caught up and led astray by the enemy of our souls. 00:11:43.159 --> 00:11:47.600 So let's recognize that for one thing, we're really not engaged in a saving ritual. 00:11:47.600 --> 00:11:52.700 I remember talking with an individual not too long ago who said to me, 00:11:53.100 --> 00:11:58.259 oh, I've missed communion for so long, it just doesn't feel right. 00:12:00.300 --> 00:12:04.779 And I've got to tell you, I can understand that. 00:12:06.120 --> 00:12:10.500 But on the other hand, I don't want any believer to ever end up having the idea 00:12:10.500 --> 00:12:15.279 that you kind of lose all kinds of points with God if you don't take communion necessarily. 00:12:15.279 --> 00:12:21.759 I mean, there are some people that are bed fast. 00:12:23.039 --> 00:12:25.620 There are some people that are in the military, 00:12:25.740 --> 00:12:29.139 and there are reasons, various reasons, they don't engage in the Lord's table. 00:12:29.659 --> 00:12:33.600 And so don't think to yourself that when you take communion, 00:12:33.740 --> 00:12:35.939 you get kind of extra points with the Father. 00:12:38.179 --> 00:12:41.819 Satan has actually deceived many into thinking that the bread and the cup 00:12:41.820 --> 00:12:46.640 are a means of salvation, and that actually taking the bread and the cup 00:12:46.640 --> 00:12:53.860 is one of the ways that you assure yourself of your eternal destiny. 00:12:55.220 --> 00:12:59.640 The false teaching surrounding that proposes that every time communion 00:12:59.640 --> 00:13:07.500 is actually offered, that the priest is making a fresh sacrifice of Christ for our sins. 00:13:07.500 --> 00:13:11.940 That is an unholy teaching. 00:13:12.899 --> 00:13:16.100 And it is clearly contradictory to the Scriptures. 00:13:17.139 --> 00:13:18.679 I want you to take just a moment. 00:13:18.799 --> 00:13:21.259 You're there in 1 John, and we're going to come back to it. 00:13:21.559 --> 00:13:27.519 But I want you to turn in your Bible over to Hebrews 7, verse 27, 00:13:28.480 --> 00:13:29.779 and mark what it says, 00:13:30.159 --> 00:13:34.960 talking about Jesus in relationship to the priestly sacrifices 00:13:34.960 --> 00:13:37.220 that were made in the Old Testament. 00:13:37.320 --> 00:13:37.820 He says this, 00:13:37.820 --> 00:13:39.840 He had no need, like those high priests, 00:13:40.220 --> 00:13:43.440 to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins, 00:13:44.800 --> 00:13:48.660 and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all. 00:13:48.660 --> 00:13:52.200 And I would encourage you, underline that in your Bible, 00:13:52.420 --> 00:13:53.980 once for all. 00:13:54.660 --> 00:13:57.060 Once for all. 00:13:57.059 --> 00:14:02.719 We find a very similar statement over in Hebrews 10. 00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:07.039 And in verse 10, here's what it says, 00:14:07.799 --> 00:14:09.119 And by that will, 00:14:10.639 --> 00:14:15.259 Jesus referring, or the passage referring to Jesus coming to obey the will of the Father, 00:14:15.379 --> 00:14:15.639 it says, 00:14:16.039 --> 00:14:20.379 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ 00:14:20.379 --> 00:14:22.059 once for all. 00:14:22.099 --> 00:14:24.559 Now stop just for a moment and listen and look up. 00:14:24.559 --> 00:14:27.439 This is a little unusual statement, 00:14:27.659 --> 00:14:29.599 once for all, once for all. 00:14:29.759 --> 00:14:31.979 You don't find that kind of repetition 00:14:31.979 --> 00:14:38.199 without understanding that the Spirit of God wants to be clear 00:14:38.199 --> you admit that sometimes that can be pretty just functional? 00:15:40.159 --> 00:15:41.539 I mean, you know what I'm saying? 00:15:43.519 --> 00:15:47.240 Probably a more practical way to really get down to the nut of the matter 00:15:47.240 --> 00:15:50.740 would be to turn to your wife on Saturday evening and say, 00:15:50.819 --> 00:15:56.620 honey, are there any sin areas in my life that you tell you something, listen to me. 00:17:23.500 --> 00:17:27.920 What He has done for us means everything to me, 00:17:28.660 --> 00:17:30.599 and it means everything to you who know Christ. tendency of redirecting, correcting, 00:17:53.319 --> 00:17:56.759 and helping me get back in the space that I need to be. 00:17:59.400 --> 00:18:01.259 So here we are with this little verse, 00:18:02.480 --> 00:18:06.360 and the apostle says this. 00:18:06.420 --> 00:18:07.160 He says, listen, 00:18:09.460 --> 00:18:13.500 this is how we know love. 00:18:13.500 --> 00:18:18.660 He laid down His life for us. 00:18:19.779 --> 00:18:22.440 So let's look at that very simple statement 00:18:22.440 --> 00:18:25.000 and recognize that when it says 00:18:25.000 --> 00:18:27.160 He laid down His life for us, 00:18:27.200 --> 00:18:28.599 what it is telling us is that 00:18:28.599 --> 00:18:32.740 Jesus made a voluntary choice. 00:18:35.960 --> 00:18:39.339 Jesus' death on the cross was not kind of a quirk of fate. 00:18:39.339 --> 00:18:43.759 It was not a cruel display of the heartless attitudes 00:18:43.759 --> 00:18:45.500 of the Jewish leaders, 00:18:45.599 --> 00:18:47.459 though they were heartless and godless. 00:18:48.559 --> 00:18:50.279 What we understand is that 00:18:50.279 --> 00:18:51.879 what took place on the cross 00:18:51.879 --> 00:18:54.019 is something that the Lord Jesus 00:18:54.019 --> 00:18:56.500 consciously and deliberately chose to do. 00:18:57.740 --> 00:18:59.500 You are there in 1 John. 00:18:59.579 --> 00:19:01.159 I want you to look at a companion passage 00:19:01.159 --> 00:19:03.359 that amplifies this statement. 00:19:03.539 --> 00:19:05.779 Turn back to John's gospel, 00:19:05.779 --> 00:19:08.939 to John chapter 10, verse 17. 00:19:09.339 --> 00:19:16.359 John chapter 10, verse 17. 00:19:21.240 --> 00:19:23.980 For this reason the Father loves me, 00:19:24.299 --> 00:19:26.939 because I lay down my life 00:19:26.939 --> 00:20:03.859 the one who has redeemed me 00:20:03.859 --> 00:20:05.959 and has blessed me with all spiritual blessings 00:20:05.959 --> 00:20:06.719 in the heavenlies, 00:20:07.179 --> 00:20:09.219 consciously and deliberately chose 00:20:09.219 --> 00:20:11.659 to lay aside His pre-incarnate glory 00:20:11.659 --> 00:20:14.379 and to come here and live on this earth 00:20:14.379 --> 00:20:17.259 a sinless life and to die for my sins. 00:20:18.959 --> 00:20:21.759 The wonder of His choice is really magnified 00:20:21.759 --> 00:20:23.039 when we stop and consider 00:20:23.039 -->
