We like good pathways. We like happy, easy lives. 00:01:03.140 --> 00:01:25.400 I wonder this morning if I were to tell you that there is a guaranteed roadmap, a guaranteed strategic plan, as it were, to arrive at greatness, to enjoy good things, to be exalted, as it were. 00:01:25.400 --> 00:01:32.859 Is it a plan that you would say, whoa, sign me up, I want to know that plan, let's go for it. 00:01:33.860 --> 00:01:36.020 Yes, the question is a setup. 00:01:37.400 --> 00:01:51.120 You know, if you've been in business or management for any length of time, certainly you're familiar with the book that's written by Stephen Covey that are the seven habits of highly effective people. 00:01:51.120 --> 00:01:56.160 It was written back in 1989, about 35 years ago. 00:01:56.380 --> 00:02:06.460 And in that book, he puts together these seven, I guess, universal principles, as it were, that kind of arrive at kind of the character. 00:02:06.459 --> 00:02:21.439 And through observation and evaluating the men and the women in industry and business who were the most successful and what was common to them in presenting them to the world around them. 00:02:21.500 --> 00:02:29.199 So that they, too, could 1,500 miles this Silk Road began during Nebuchadnezzar's reign. 00:05:28.420 --> 00:05:35.159 His technological prowess, his ability to assimilate the best and brightest minds from around the world. list is quite specific. 00:06:41.479 --> 00:06:43.180 His list is quite simple. 00:06:43.959 --> 00:06:50.019 His list would focus in on the one quality that will govern a life, 00:06:50.019 --> chapter 20, he says, 00:07:10.079 --> 00:07:12.719 The last will be first, and the first will be last. 00:07:13.379 --> 00:07:18.399 It shall not be among you, speaking about them as being lords over 00:08:04.500 Humble yourself, or God will humble you. 00:08:04.500 --> 00:08:08.040 Humble yourself, or God will humble you. 00:08:08.500 --> 00:08:12.860 And by the way, this is the encouragement to sends him this dream. 00:12:12.719 --> 00:12:14.099 This dream of this tree 00:12:14.099 --> 00:12:17.299 that spreads across the entire earth. 00:12:17.439 --> 00:12:19.819 It says that its greatness expanded 00:12:19.819 --> 00:12:20.839 even to the heavens, 00:12:21.059 --> 00:12:22.539 that all the beasts of the field, 00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:23.599 the birds of the air, 00:12:23.860 --> 00:12:25.899 were not only protected by its shade, 00:12:26.099 --> 00:12:27.419 but were filled by its fruit. 00:12:27.500 --> 00:12:29.120 It was the kind of tree 00:12:29.120 --> 00:12:32.639 that demonstrated the expansive nature 00:12:32.639 --> 00:12:34.439 of Nebuchadnezzar's kingdom 00:12:34.439 --> 00:12:36.959 and the way in which his kingdom 00:12:36.959 --> 00:12:38.679 was helping to meet the needs 00:12:38.679 --> 00:12:39.719 of the known world. 00:12:39.720 --> 00:12:40.340 at the time. 00:12:43.399 --> 00:12:43.899 Nebuchadnezzar decides 00:12:44.620 --> 00:12:46.820 that he wants to understand 00:12:46.820 --> 00:12:47.480 and to know 00:12:47.480 --> 00:12:50.060 what this dream actually means. 00:12:50.180 --> 00:12:52.840 So he calls in his counselors, 00:12:53.100 --> 00:12:54.000 his astrologers, 00:12:54.080 --> 00:12:54.920 the Chaldeans, 00:12:55.279 --> 00:12:56.180 the soothsayers, 00:12:56.220 --> 00:12:58.040 and he brings them in 00:12:58.040 --> 00:12:59.080 so that he can find 00:12:59.080 --> 00:13:00.899 an interpretation to this dream. 00:13:01.680 --> 00:13:02.440 Of course, 00:13:02.540 --> 00:13:04.779 they could not interpret the dream. 00:13:05.840 --> 00:13:07.160 And so he finally calls in, 00:13:07.220 --> 00:13:08.519 Nebuchadnezzar calls in Daniel, 00:13:09.079 --> 00:13:11.860 and Daniel begins to lay this out for him 00:13:11.860 --> 00:13:13.159 and to help him understand, 00:13:13.259 --> 00:13:13.759 Nebuchadnezzar, 00:13:13.819 --> 00:13:14.299 you're the tree. 00:13:15.399 --> 00:13:17.480 And this tree that fills the earth 00:13:17.480 --> 00:13:19.240 is what God has accomplished 00:13:19.240 --> 00:13:21.259 for you and through you, 00:13:21.539 --> 00:13:23.120 and not only having dominion 00:13:23.120 --> 00:13:24.240 over the known world, 00:13:24.579 --> 00:13:27.240 but in allowing your kingdom to thrive. 00:13:27.240 --> 00:13:30.320 But in the middle of this dream, 00:13:30.419 --> 00:13:31.600 we find a watcher, 00:13:31.759 --> 00:13:33.320 and that watcher is an angel 00:13:33.320 --> 00:13:34.360 who was commanded 00:13:34.360 --> 00:13:35.960 to chop this tree down. 00:13:36.259 --> 00:13:37.820 And so the tree is chopped down, 00:13:38.080 --> 00:13:39.299 the branches are cut off, 00:13:39.460 --> 00:13:41.139 all that remains is the trunk. 00:13:42.259 --> 00:13:49.139 --> 00:13:53.000 And this is an image of Nebuchadnezzar, 00:13:53.039 --> 00:13:54.000 what will happen to him. 00:13:54.819 --> 00:13:57.740 We come to Daniel 4, 26, 00:13:58.699 --> 00:13:59.059 it says, 00:13:59.059 --> 00:14:13.899 And here's where we begin to understand 00:14:13.899 --> 00:14:17.639 that this dream has a two-part promise. 00:14:18.659 --> 00:14:19.979 The first part of the promise 00:14:19.979 --> 00:14:21.359 is going to involve humility. 00:14:21.839 --> 00:14:23.579 The second part of this promise 00:14:23.580 --> 00:14:26.840 is working towards the ultimate destination, 00:14:27.320 --> 00:14:28.320 and that ultimate destination 00:14:28.320 --> 00:14:30.100 is restoration. 00:14:31.460 --> 00:14:33.259 This tree isn't cut down and burned 00:14:33.259 --> 00:14:34.780 and uprooted and thrown away. 00:14:35.020 --> 00:14:37.500 The tree and the stump remains 00:14:37.500 --> 00:14:38.900 because God has a purpose 00:14:38.900 --> 00:14:41.639 for Nebuchadnezzar's humility 00:14:41.639 --> 00:14:43.759 to bring restoration. 00:14:46.160 --> 00:14:48.980 So that now Daniel in verse 27 00:14:48.980 --> 00:14:51.300 now provides some exhortation, 00:14:51.759 --> 00:14:52.960 provides some counsel, 00:14:52.960 --> 00:14:55.720 So based upon what this dream says, 00:14:56.160 --> 00:14:57.379 based upon its interpretation, 00:14:57.580 --> 00:14:59.639 here is my advice to you, O king. 00:15:00.280 --> 00:15:00.940 Therefore, O king, 00:15:01.000 --> 00:15:02.980 let my counsel be acceptable to you. 00:15:03.600 --> to verse 33, 00:15:38.259 --> 00:15:40.120 Immediately the word was fulfilled 00:15:40.120 --> 00:15:42.100 against Nebuchadnezzar. 00:15:43.100 --> 00:15:44.139 It may be worthwhile 00:15:44.139 --> 00:15:46.559 to underline those two phrases 00:15:46.559 --> 00:15:48.839 because they point to the testimony 00:15:48.839 --> 00:15:50.000 of God's promise. 00:15:50.599 --> 00:15:51.919 And that's our first point this morning. 00:15:52.259 --> 00:15:54.899 God's promise to humble the king 00:15:54.899 --> 00:15:56.279 is now underway, 00:15:56.839 --> 00:15:57.839 is now being fulfilled.
