wonderful new perspective 00:01:25.719 --> 00:01:33.420 on the fact that my parents adopted her, and a wonderful appreciation for the life that 00:01:33.420 --> 00:01:37.719 she was given, rather than the life that she was destined for, had she not been adopted. 00:01:37.719 --> 00:01:44.239 And this is one of the reasons it comes home for me that I believe this is a wonderful metaphor, 00:01:44.400 --> 00:01:46.579 because not only is she happy, this is my sister. 00:01:46.840 --> 00:01:49.659 This is our sister, my mom and my dad's daughter. 00:01:49.799 --> 00:01:55.719 We are so because God wants to spare us from slavery to a sin-addicted and abusive world. 00:02:08.479 --> 00:02:16.099 God wants to spare you and release you from bondage, or has spared you and released you from bondage 00:02:16.099 --> 00:02:19.020 to a sin-addicted, lost and abusive world. 00:02:21.479 --> 00:02:23.000 Let's turn to Galatians 4. 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:26.800 Paul is writing to Galatia. 00:02:27.439 --> 00:02:29.180 So this is Mediterranean Sea. 00:02:29.280 --> 00:02:33.120 You can kind of see Galatia is to the east and a little bit to the north. 00:02:33.620 --> 00:02:35.520 It's not a town, it's an area. 00:02:35.639 --> 00:02:39.259 And this is one of the areas that Paul went to during one of his missionary journeys. 00:02:39.639 --> 00:02:46.199 And as happened in all the other areas, like Ephesus and a number of the other cities or areas that he went to, 00:02:46.460 --> 00:02:50.860 when Paul moved out from his missionary journey, the false teachers came in. 00:02:50.860 --> 00:02:56.820 And they started to say, well, Paul's message is great, but let's just add a little bit to that. 00:02:57.440 --> 00:03:03.200 And what we have in Paul's letter to the Galatians, as is in a number of Paul's other letters, 00:03:03.500 --> 00:03:10.380 he's addressing the false teaching that has come in after him, pretty much immediately after he left. 00:03:10.379 --> 00:03:14.879 And he's addressing a false teaching that says, what people were saying is, you know, 00:03:15.280 --> 00:03:19.400 we still need to keep the law as an obligation to be accepted by God. 00:03:20.500 --> 00:03:27.379 Not as cultural Jews, just as someone from Africa would keep their, at that time in ancient Africa, 00:03:27.460 --> 00:03:28.960 would keep their cultural values. 00:03:29.060 --> 00:03:32.379 But not just cultural values, that these are things we need to do. 00:03:32.620 --> 00:03:36.859 Rituals, keeping the law in order to be accepted by God. 00:03:36.939 --> 00:03:39.500 These are our obligations in order to stay within his house. 00:03:39.500 --> 00:03:43.620 That was the teaching that Paul was saying, no, hold on here. 00:03:43.979 --> 00:03:44.419 Wait he is a child, is no different from a slave. 00:04:22.100 --> 00:04:28.540 Though he is the owner of everything, but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father. 00:04:28.540 --> 00:04:33.800 In Roman times, legally, you didn't come to age automatically at 12 or 13. 00:04:34.379 --> 00:04:37.800 You came to age when the father decided you were going to come to age. it starts with, I mean that. 00:04:53.500 --> 00:04:55.019 Paul is talking about something. 00:04:55.100 --> 00:04:58.939 He's developing an idea that he's already stated in chapter three. 00:04:59.639 --> 00:05:04.779 And so we have to read everything in chapter four of our section in light of what he has just said in chapter three. 00:05:04.779 --> 00:05:07.259 And what he said in 00:05:14.479 --> 00:05:22.839 And this adoption comes in accordance with a promise that was made long before the law ever came along. 00:05:24.719 --> 00:05:30.899 A promise of faith that was given to Abraham, which he develops and talks about fully in chapter three, 00:05:30.899 --> 00:05:35.259 which came along long before Moses came along with the law. 00:05:37.299 --> 00:05:42.979 Being adopted by God for us as Christians has to do with the promise to Abraham. 00:05:43.599 --> 00:05:52.099 And because that promise comes from then, before the law, it supersedes anything the law can do for us. Abraham based on faith. 00:06:33.279 --> 00:06:43.139 And what Paul is saying here is that the law was given as a guardian between the promise given to Abraham and the promise fulfilled in Christ. guardian. 00:06:54.959 --> 00:07:09.180 So when he uses the term child, when in our passage we hear the term child, what Paul is indicating is that time when the law was kind of our guardian as children. 00:07:09.180 --> 00:07:14.519 He's calling the Galatians to that mature faith in Christ, not to stay as children. 00:07:14.740 --> 00:07:18.900 And when you're a child, you're as good as a slave, he's saying, because you have these, it doesn't matter who you are. 00:07:19.259 --> 00:07:20.840 You've got these overlords over you. 00:07:21.120 --> 00:07:24.300 And that's who it is that's saying the law did the same thing. 00:08:18.919 --> 00:08:23.139 It had that purpose of holding and bringing people and making them God's people. 00:08:23.699 --> 00:08:31.620 But with Jesus now, if we still allow the Egypt, the law to function like that, we remain slaves. 00:08:31.719 --> 00:08:36.679 It's made that same shift that Egypt made in the life of Israel at that time. 00:08:36.679 --> 00:08:44.659 So if they aren't careful, he's saying, they could easily become stuck under that taskmaster again. 00:08:44.839 --> 00:08:51.899 It would be the same as the Israelites going back to Egypt after they had been saved by God from that. 00:08:52.099 --> 00:08:54.519 And we know that they were always saying, well, Egypt was so great. 00:08:55.259 --> 00:08:56.339 It's the same with the without being a son or a daughter of Christ. 00:17:03.240 --> 00:17:04.019 It's nothing novel. 00:17:04.119 --> 00:17:07.099 You've probably heard the term moral therapeutic deism before. 00:17:09.380 --> 00:17:11.240 But it's important to keep this in mind, folks, 00:17:11.280 --> 00:17:12.940 because this is the water that we sleep in. 00:17:13.120 --> 00:17:15.580 I want to give you the National
