--> 00:00:47.379 and that's not always bad. 00:00:48.299 --> 00:00:50.879 But we might, for instance, take a picture of ourselves 00:00:50.879 --> 00:00:53.159 on vacation this summer and post it online, 00:00:54.240 --> 00:00:55.820 put hashtag blessed under it. 00:00:55.820 --> 00:00:57.019 What a blessing to be here. 00:00:57.020 --> 00:00:59.160 You know, some people use the word blessing 00:00:59.160 --> 00:01:02.900 as a way to kind of humble brag about their own successes. 00:01:03.600 --> 00:01:07.520 I've been so blessed with all of these promotions 00:01:07.520 --> 00:01:11.000 in my job, right, and all the hard work that I've done. 00:01:11.460 --> 00:01:13.120 We say it after people sneeze. 00:01:14.120 --> 00:01:15.700 We hear this word quite a bit. 00:01:16.320 --> 00:01:18.300 And there's nothing really wrong with that, 00:01:18.340 --> 00:01:20.520 but the problem is that we use this word so much 00:01:20.520 --> 00:01:22.379 that I think we've lost a lot of parenting stress, 00:01:43.759 --> 00:01:46.199 whatever difficulties are pulling at the edges 00:01:46.199 --> 00:01:48.039 of your attention right now, 00:01:48.120 --> 00:01:50.219 whatever difficulties keep you up at night 00:01:50.219 --> 00:01:53.899 wringing your hands, whatever we're dealing with, 00:01:53.900 --> 00:01:57.440 the thing that we most need to get through those of God's blessing for us 00:02:16.040 --> 00:02:17.700 that you'll find anywhere in the Bible. 00:02:17.699 --> 00:02:19.939 And we're going to ask a couple of questions. 00:02:20.259 --> 00:02:21.639 What is a blessing really? 00:02:22.599 --> 00:02:25.719 And then what is God's blessing for you 00:02:25.719 --> 00:02:28.219 and for me this morning? 00:02:28.859 --> 00:02:31.299 Let's pray and blessing? 00:03:31.260 --> 00:03:34.980 A lot of times when we hear the word bless or blessing, 00:03:34.979 --> 00:03:39.719 we think of it as a kind of way of encouraging someone, 00:03:40.119 --> 00:03:42.299 well-wishing them, blessing them. 00:03:42.859 --> 00:03:44.539 And in one sense, that's true, 00:03:44.679 --> 00:03:47.259 but in the Bible, it means far more than that. 00:03:47.819 --> 00:03:50.879 If you consider examples of blessing in the Old Testament, 00:03:51.060 --> 00:03:53.839 for instance, when Isaac blesses Jacob, 00:03:54.319 --> 00:03:58.679 or when then Jacob goes on to bless his 12 sons, 00:03:58.680 --> 00:04:04.040 or when Samuel anoints and blesses David, 00:04:04.379 --> 00:04:08.659 what we see in every case is we have someone in authority 00:04:08.659 --> 00:04:13.219 declaring a person's true purpose 00:04:13.219 --> 00:04:15.360 and their true identity. 00:04:16.360 --> 00:04:17.939 This is who you are, 00:04:18.860 --> 00:04:20.840 and this is why you're here. 00:04:20.960 --> 00:04:22.699 This is the purpose of your life. 00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:25.800 This is the course that your life is meant to take. 00:04:25.800 --> 00:04:27.800 And because of that, 00:04:27.860 --> 00:04:31.340 because a blessing speaks to your identity and your purpose, 00:04:32.180 --> 00:04:34.800 blessings can have tremendous power. 00:04:35.520 --> 00:04:37.100 They're able to shape and direct 00:04:37.100 --> 00:04:39.180 the course of someone's entire life. 00:04:39.780 --> 00:04:42.580 And that is exactly what a blessing is meant to do. the Ephesians the way he does. 00:04:53.220 --> 00:04:54.879 Imagine you're the Apostle Paul, 00:04:54.879 --> 00:04:56.560 and you're sitting in prison in Rome, 00:04:56.719 --> 00:04:58.779 and you've heard about all of these issues 00:04:58.779 --> 00:05:00.100 happening in the church 00:05:00.100 --> 00:05:01.899 that you helped to start in Ephesus. 00:05:02.319 --> 00:05:03.259 There is strife. 00:05:03.439 --> 00:05:04.860 There is personal sin. 00:05:05.219 --> 00:05:07.659 There is racial tension and division. 00:05:07.939 --> 00:05:09.639 There's a rise of paganism. 00:05:09.839 --> 00:05:12.540 There's demonic oppression and spiritual warfare. 00:05:13.079 --> 00:05:15.279 And you have one shot to write a letter 00:05:15.279 --> 00:05:18.159 as their pastor to address all of these issues. 00:05:18.360 --> 00:05:19.279 How would you begin? 00:05:21.579 --> 00:05:23.279 This is how Paul begins. 00:05:23.279 --> 00:05:26.819 He believes that all of the issues 00:05:26.819 --> 00:05:29.059 in the Ephesian church are symptoms 00:05:29.059 --> 00:05:32.059 of the fact that they have forgotten 00:05:32.059 --> 00:05:33.959 who they truly are 00:05:33.959 --> 00:05:36.659 and why they are here. 00:05:37.179 --> 00:05:38.919 So the first half of his letter, 00:05:39.039 --> 00:05:41.459 he essentially says again and again and again, 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:44.739 remember who you are. 00:05:45.739 --> 00:05:48.619 Remember who you are. 00:05:48.620 --> 00:05:49.840 And as we'll see, 00:05:49.980 --> 00:05:53.100 remember whose you are. 00:05:54.079 --> 00:05:57.319 And see, every human being has this deep longing 00:05:57.319 --> 00:06:01.399 for identity and meaning and purpose. 00:06:01.660 --> 00:06:02.620 We want to desperately… 00:06:03.439 --> don't know who I am anymore. 00:06:52.900 --> 00:06:55.840 I don't know what the purpose of my life is. 00:06:55.920 --> 00:06:57.840 Why to get out of bed anymore? 00:06:58.620 --> 00:07:01.080 If you begin to root your identity 00:07:01.080 --> 00:07:02.139 in your appearance, 00:07:02.319 --> 00:07:03.540 that works for a while, 00:07:03.700 --> 00:07:05.860 particularly if you happen to be You're going to have a perpetually insecure 00:07:59.879 --> 00:08:02.000 and fragile sense of self. 00:08:02.839 --> 00:08:05.399 That's why people who define themselves this way 00:08:05.399 --> 00:08:09.219 are constantly looking for external sources of validation 00:08:09.219 --> 00:08:12.060 to gain that sense of stability. 00:08:12.600 --> 00:08:15.719 If you root your sense of identity in your children, 00:08:16.600 --> 00:08:19.199 what happens when your kids get older? 00:08:19.699 --> 00:08:22.779 What happens when your children begin to make choices 00:08:22.779 --> 00:08:24.659 begin to wonder, 00:08:31.979 --> 00:08:33.819 is this reflecting on my parenting? 00:08:34.019 --> 00:08:36.339 Do people around me think that I'm a bad parent, 00:08:36.759 --> 00:08:38.899 that I have failed because of the thing 00:08:38.899 --> 00:08:39.879 that my child did? 00:08:41.519 --> 00:08:44.019 If you've rooted your sense of identity in your children, 00:08:44.100 --> 00:08:44.939 as they get older, 00:08:45.039 --> 00:08:45.819 as they leave, 00:08:45.919 --> 00:08:49.159 as you successfully parent them out of your house, 00:08:49.159 --> 00:08:51.919 I've heard people say, 00:08:52.019 --> 00:08:52.919 well, now that my kids are gone, 00:08:52.980 --> 00:08:54.000 I don't know who I am anymore. 00:08:54.120 --> 00:08:54.959 I don't know why I'm here. 00:08:55.059 --> 00:08:56.139 I don't know why I get out of bed. 00:08:56.159 --> 00:08:56.919 I have no purpose. 00:08:58.559 --> 00:09:00.860 So in all of these sources of identity, 00:09:00.860 --> 00:09:02.159 we find they don't work. 00:09:02.240 --> 00:09:03.100 They don't last. 00:09:03.500 --> 00:09:06.100 They don't give us that thing that we hope they will. 00:09:06.100 --> 00:09:08.399 And that's because there's only one place 00:09:08.399 --> 00:09:10.719 that we can go to figure out the truth 00:09:10.719 --> 00:09:14.240 about who we really are and why we are really here. 00:09:14.740 --> identity and purpose in our lives? 00:10:07.500 --> 00:10:08.740 Well, this entire passage 00:10:08.740 --> 00:10:10.840 that we're looking at this morning, 00:10:11.320 --> 00:10:12.279 beginning in verse 3, 00:10:12.279 --> 00:10:15.759 is one long run-on sentence in the Greek. 00:10:15.860 --> 00:10:19.720 Paul is so filled with things that he wants to say 00:10:19.720 --> 00:10:22.159 to try to answer this question for us 00:10:22.159 --> 00:10:24.139 that he just goes on and on and on and on and on. 00:10:24.179 --> 00:10:26.419 The entire thing is just one long run-on sentence. 00:10:27.860 --> 00:10:31.000 But what it lacks in grammatical quality, 00:10:31.100 --> 00:10:33.159 it makes up for in theological depth. 00:10:33.159 --> 00:10:36.059 It is a staggering statement. 00:10:36.799 --> 00:10:38.199 What is God's blessing for us? 00:10:38.419 --> 00:10:40.860 For everyone who puts their faith in Jesus, 00:10:41.000 --> 00:10:42.419 there are three things here 00:10:42.419 --> 00:10:44.980 that are most true about your identity 00:10:44.980 --> 00:10:46.219 and your purpose. 00:10:46.379 --> 00:10:48.199 They're more true than whatever 00:10:48.199 --> 00:10:49.740 you have come to believe 00:10:49.740 --> 00:10:51.819 about those things in your life. 00:10:52.679 --> 00:10:55.299 Number one, verses 4 to 6, 00:10:55.299 --> 00:11:14.799 Now, if we don't understand 00:11:14.799 --> 00:11:16.179 what Paul is saying here, 00:11:16.240 --> 00:11:17.259 it's easy to get caught up 00:11:17.259 --> 00:11:19.799 with the wrong idea about predestination. 00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:21.879 Paul is not talking about this 00:11:21.879 --> 00:11:24.259 in the context of unbelievers, 00:11:24.259 --> 00:11:25.939 as though people might come to Jesus 00:11:25.939 --> 00:11:27.539 and say, I want a relationship. 00:11:27.759 --> 00:11:29.480 And he says, well, you're not on the list. 00:11:30.179 --> 00:11:31.399 That's not how it works. 00:11:32.019 --> 00:11:33.740 The gospel is open to everyone 00:11:33.740 --> 00:11:36.700 and anyone who comes to Jesus in faith 00:11:36.700 --> 00:11:37.939 will be saved. 00:11:38.100 --> 00:11:40.460 Paul is writing this as a pastor 00:11:40.460 --> 00:11:41.960 trying to encourage his flock. 00:11:43.059 --> 00:11:44.059 There's a time and a place 00:11:44.059 --> 00:11:45.919 to get into the theological mysteries 00:11:45.919 --> 00:11:46.919 of predestination 00:11:46.919 --> 00:11:49.200 and all of what that means 00:11:49.200 --> 00:11:50.720 and how it relates to free will. 00:11:51.120 --> 00:11:53.759 But here, Paul is writing as a pastor 00:11:53.759 --> 00:11:56.100 and he's trying to encourage his people. 00:11:56.759 --> 00:11:57.879 And friends, he's writing --> 00:12:14.139 they didn't want anymore. 00:12:14.240 --> 00:12:15.519 There was a trash dump 00:12:15.519 --> 00:12:17.519 outside the eastern gate of Ephesus, 00:12:17.759 --> 00:12:19.000 and that's the place where people 00:12:19.000 --> 00:12:20.980 would take and discard babies 00:12:20.980 --> 00:12:21.800 that they didn't want. 00:12:23.779 --> 00:12:25.320 And slavers knew this, 00:12:25.360 --> 00:12:27.340 and so slavers would frequent that area 00:12:27.340 --> 00:12:28.580 and they would look for babies 00:12:28.580 --> 00:12:29.279 healthy enough 00:12:29.279 --> 00:12:32.320 that they might turn them into slaves, 00:12:32.800 --> 00:12:34.000 sell them and turn a profit. 00:12:35.980 --> 00:12:37.700 It was a culture of abandonment. 00:12:37.800 --> parents. 00:12:43.879 --> 00:12:45.580 And the point he's trying to make 00:12:45.580 --> 00:12:46.680 is that if you're someone 00:12:46.680 --> 00:12:48.100 who has come to faith in Jesus,
