Huffman was arrested 00:02:40.459 --> 00:02:44.239 and he was sentenced to 30 years in prison 00:02:44.239 --> 00:02:46.639 without any possibility of parole. 00:02:47.159 --> 00:02:48.939 Now you think back to 2008, 00:02:49.400 --> 00:02:52.979 he has not even served yet half of his sentence. 00:02:53.519 --> 00:02:57.019 And during that time, his wife has died. 00:02:57.859 --> 00:02:58.939 He had four children. 00:02:59.060 --> 00:03:00.379 All of them have gotten married. 00:03:00.959 --> 00:03:02.780 He's had grandchildren born. 00:03:02.780 --> 00:03:06.400 And he missed every bit of 00:03:46.919 --> 00:03:49.300 Many retirees had invested 00:03:49.300 --> 00:03:51.719 their entire retirement with him 00:03:51.719 --> 00:03:54.659 because he was claiming to pay more out who had worked their entire lives 00:04:20.079 --> 00:04:21.939 to invest money for retirement, 00:04:22.540 --> 00:04:23.319 it was gone. 00:04:23.319 --> 00:04:26.740 It took them five years to collect anything back 00:04:26.740 --> 00:04:29.879 and they got pennies on the dollar. 00:04:30.759 --> 00:04:33.740 There is no such thing as a private sin. 00:04:34.600 --> 00:04:39.340 And sin 00:05:12.520 we emphasize that God is a loving and forgiving God, 00:05:12.580 --> 00:05:13.340 and he is. 00:05:13.340 --> 00:05:16.340 But what we fail to also recognize 00:05:16.339 --> 00:05:19.539 is that God has called us to be holy, 00:05:20.399 --> 00:05:23.219 to be holy as he is holy. 00:05:23.519 --> 00:05:25.139 And what we don't understand 00:05:25.139 --> 00:05:27.259 or don't emphasize so much 00:05:27.259 --> 00:05:29.399 is that even those small sins 00:05:29.399 --> 00:05:31.659 that we label small sins, 00:05:32.120 --> 00:05:33.719 private, secret sins, 00:05:33.919 --> 00:05:37.059 they have a big impact in our lives 00:05:37.059 --> 00:05:38.859 and our relationship with the Lord. 00:05:38.939 --> 00:05:41.059 And when they affect us, 00:05:41.939 --> 00:05:44.539 when they affect our relationship with God, 00:05:44.540 --> 00:05:46.180 there's a ripple effect 00:05:46.180 --> 00:05:49.280 that it has around in our families 00:05:49.280 --> Well, today I want us to take a look 00:06:09.240 --> 00:06:11.020 at a passage in 2 Samuel 00:06:11.020 --> 00:06:13.759 that gives us a remarkable account 00:06:13.759 --> 00:06:19.000 of how sin had a major impact upon David. 00:06:19.659 --> 00:06:21.000 But not only David, 00:06:21.139 --> 00:06:22.620 we will see the ripple effect 00:06:22.620 --> 00:06:25.599 that it had throughout his entire family 00:06:25.599 --> 00:06:27.860 and others around him. 00:06:28.399 --> 00:06:30.899 David believed that he could commit sins 00:06:30.899 --> 00:06:33.459 such as adultery and murder 00:06:33.459 --> 00:06:34.759 and not get caught. 00:06:34.860 --> 00:06:36.620 I mean, hey, after all, he was the king. 00:06:36.620 --> 00:06:40.899 He didn't feel that he would get caught 00:06:40.899 --> 00:06:43.860 or have the impact that it had 00:06:43.860 --> 00:06:45.560 upon other people's lives. 00:06:45.660 --> 00:06:47.019 But David was very wrong. 00:06:48.160 --> 00:06:49.620 David was just as wrong 00:06:49.620 --> 00:06:51.680 as you and I standing here today 00:06:51.680 --> 00:06:54.319 thinking that we can have secret private sin 00:06:54.319 --> 00:06:56.000 and it not affect our lives 00:06:56.000 --> 00:06:57.740 or the others around us. 00:06:58.300 --> 00:06:59.480 David was very wrong 00:06:59.480 --> 00:07:02.439 that he could commit these sins 00:07:02.439 --> 00:07:04.480 because he involved others around him 00:07:04.480 --> 00:07:06.680 and it impacted his entire family 00:07:06.680 --> 00:07:07.740 for years to come. chapter 11 00:07:13.000 --> 00:07:13.819 and we're just going to read 00:07:13.819 --> 00:07:15.839 the first five verses to start with. 00:07:15.839 --> 00:07:18.199 In the spring, 00:07:18.799 --> 00:07:21.179 at that time when kings go off to war, 00:07:21.739 --> 00:07:24.379 David sent Joab out with the king's men 00:07:24.379 --> 00:07:25.799 and the whole Israelite army. 00:07:26.439 --> 00:07:28.079 They destroyed the Ammonites 00:07:28.079 --> 00:07:29.359 and besieged Rabah. 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:32.079 But David remained in Jerusalem. 00:07:32.839 --> 00:07:35.079 One evening, David got up from his bed 00:07:35.079 --> 00:07:37.319 and he walked around on the roof of the palace. 00:07:37.899 --> 00:07:40.679 From the roof, he saw a woman bathing. 00:07:41.319 --> 00:10:28.599 --> 00:10:30.799 as adultery. 00:10:30.959 --> 00:10:33.699 Even though he involved others, 00:10:34.099 --> 00:10:35.339 the servants in the palace, 00:10:35.459 --> 00:10:36.459 he involved them. 00:10:37.199 --> 00:10:38.959 But somehow he must have thought 00:10:38.959 --> 00:10:41.299 he could commit such a sin, 00:10:41.579 --> 00:10:42.459 keep it private, 00:10:42.839 --> 00:10:44.359 and have no effect 00:10:44.359 --> 00:10:47.079 or no consequences in his life. 00:10:47.139 --> 00:10:48.620 But he was very wrong. 00:10:48.620 --> 00:10:50.539 He was very wrong. 00:10:50.539 --> 00:10:52.620 Even if Bathsheba 00:10:52.620 --> 00:10:54.579 had not become pregnant, 00:10:55.219 --> 00:10:57.620 there would have been repercussions 00:10:57.620 --> 00:10:58.779 and an impact 00:10:58.779 --> 00:11:00.779 upon his spiritual life. 00:11:01.360 --> 00:11:01.919 There would have been 00:11:01.919 --> 00:11:04.279 an impact upon those he involved. 00:11:05.059 --> 00:11:07.799 David made some very unwise choices. 00:11:08.519 --> 00:11:10.839 And we're going to see very soon 00:11:10.839 --> 00:11:12.360 in the scripture 00:11:12.360 --> 00:11:13.579 that the choices left 00:11:13.579 --> 00:11:15.839 some very lasting consequences 00:11:15.839 --> 00:11:18.019 to be paid by David 00:11:18.019 --> 00:11:19.779 as well as his family, 00:11:19.779 --> 00:11:21.879 the palace servants, 00:11:22.059 --> 00:11:23.240 and many others. 00:11:23.959 --> 00:11:25.000 You know, David may have felt 00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:26.439 that he got away with his sin. 00:11:27.000 --> 00:11:28.000 But if Bathsheba 00:11:28.000 --> 00:11:29.279 had not become pregnant, 00:11:29.779 --> 00:11:32.220 his sin still impacted 00:11:32.220 --> 00:11:35.740 his heart and his life 00:11:35.740 --> 00:11:37.959 and his walk with the Lord. 00:11:38.360 --> 00:11:38.919 It caused, 00:11:39.360 --> 00:11:41.480 but his sin did become public. 00:11:41.480 --> 00:11:43.399 It caused Bathsheba's shame. 00:11:44.259 --> 00:11:46.179 It caused Uriah's death. 00:11:46.659 --> 00:11:48.039 Now, if you read on in scripture, 00:11:48.039 --> 00:11:50.579 you'll notice that it was 00:11:50.579 --> 00:11:52.980 not only Uriah that was killed. 00:11:54.000 --> 00:11:55.539 David had Uriah sent 00:11:55.539 --> 00:11:56.679 to the front line 00:11:56.679 --> 00:11:58.139 of the fiercest battle. 00:11:58.519 --> 00:11:59.279 I mean, they went up 00:11:59.279 --> 00:12:01.059 to the wall of the city 00:12:01.059 --> 00:12:02.879 and then were to have 00:12:02.879 --> 00:12:04.699 all the other soldiers withdraw 00:12:04.699 --> 00:12:06.480 and have Uriah killed. 00:12:06.579 --> 00:12:07.599 But if you keep reading 00:12:07.599 --> 00:12:08.759 here in 2 Samuel, 00:12:09.139 --> 00:12:10.179 you'll see that there were 00:12:10.179 --> 00:12:11.059 other soldiers 00:12:11.059 --> 00:12:12.620 who were killed as well. 00:12:13.000 --> 00:12:13.659 I mean, that was just 00:12:13.659 --> 00:12:14.480 a no-brainer. 00:12:14.480 --> 00:12:15.980 You don't approach the wall 00:12:15.980 --> 00:12:17.920 because they had archers. 00:12:18.220 --> 00:12:19.259 People could just throw rocks 00:12:19.259 --> 00:12:20.720 over the side of the wall 00:12:20.720 --> 00:12:21.320 and hit you 00:12:21.320 --> 00:12:22.920 and severely injure you. 00:12:22.980 --> 00:12:23.879 That was a no-brainer. 00:12:23.980 --> 00:12:25.300 But David gave the orders 00:12:25.300 --> 00:12:26.600 for them to do that. 00:12:26.940 --> 00:12:28.639 And it caused not only Uriah, 00:12:28.740 --> 00:12:31.659 but other soldiers died as well. 00:12:32.500 --> 00:12:33.519 Other repercussions 00:12:33.519 --> 00:12:35.060 were conflict and rebellion 00:12:35.060 --> 00:12:36.100 in the house of David, 00:12:36.480 --> 00:12:37.860 which eventually led 00:12:37.860 --> 00:12:40.360 to his son Absalom's death. 00:12:40.360 --> 00:12:42.180 And the fact that all this 00:12:42.180 --> 00:12:43.680 is recorded in the Bible, 00:12:44.340 --> 00:12:45.560 it has been studied 00:12:45.560 --> 00:12:46.759 for generations. 00:12:47.659 --> 00:12:49.259 It took what David thought 00:12:49.259 --> 00:12:52.500 was a private, secret sin 00:12:52.500 --> 00:12:54.840 and it made it very public 00:12:54.840 --> 00:12:57.379 for generations of people 00:12:57.379 --> 00:13:01.180 to study and learn from, 00:13:01.519 --> 00:13:03.620 but to Daniel's embarrassment. 00:13:03.860 --> 00:13:04.940 You know, that's one of the reasons 00:13:04.940 --> 00:13:06.360 we know the Bible's true. 00:13:07.480 --> 00:13:09.080 If this was a fairy tale 00:13:09.080 --> 00:13:10.639 or if this was a book 00:13:10.639 --> 00:13:13.220 that wasn't really God's word, 00:13:13.360 --> 00:13:14.560 it would oftentimes paint 00:13:14.560 --> 00:13:16.139 a picture of perfection. 00:13:16.800 --> 00:13:18.240 And the heroes of the Bible 00:13:18.240 --> 00:13:19.680 would always be painted 00:13:19.680 --> 00:13:21.340 with that perfection. 00:13:21.540 --> 00:13:22.759 And we'd never see 00:13:22.759 --> 00:13:25.259 the flaws of men like David. 00:13:25.620 --> 00:13:27.480 But the Bible does reveal 00:13:27.480 --> 00:13:30.160 the ugliness of sin 00:13:30.160 --> 00:13:32.960 that often lurks within our hearts. 00:13:32.960
