00:03:56.560 --> 00:04:06.120 And this scene is actually a dialogue between John the Baptist, JTB, and this delegation sent from Jerusalem. 00:04:06.199 --> 00:04:07.280 You can see it in verse 19. 00:04:07.860 --> 00:04:16.079 And this is the testimony of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, who are you? 00:04:16.639 --> 00:04:22.100 So what we have here in verses 19 through 28 are two sets of questions. 00:04:24.100 --> 00:04:25.139 Now here's what's going on. 00:04:25.139 --> 00:04:29.939 The Jews is a reference to the Jews who are in authority in Jerusalem. 00:04:30.599 --> 00:04:34.419 And by and large in the Gospel of John, they are Jews who oppose Jesus. 00:04:35.500 --> 00:04:43.199 So these Jews have gotten word that there are large crowds of Jews going out to John the Baptist and the Jordan and northern Israel. 00:04:43.500 --> 00:04:44.959 And he's baptizing them. 00:04:45.439 --> 00:04:46.599 And so they're like, what's going on? 00:04:46.759 --> 00:04:52.240 We're going to send a delegation to find out who this guy is and what he is doing. 00:04:52.240 --> 00:04:57.259 And so the first set of questions begins in verse 19. 00:04:57.400 --> 00:04:58.100 Who are you? 00:04:58.379 --> 00:05:03.840 And in verse 20, John the Baptist responds in a little bit surprising way. 00:05:04.840 --> 00:05:07.600 He confessed and did not deny, but confessed. 00:05:08.060 --> 00:05:09.259 That's emphatic. 00:05:10.980 --> 00:05:12.800 He says, I'm not the Christ. 00:05:12.800 --> 00:05:18.660 If they were coming looking for the Christ, he is saying, I'm not the Christ. 00:05:19.379 --> 00:05:21.860 The Christ is the first title we come across in this scene. 00:05:22.439 --> 00:05:26.020 And it means Messiah, the anointed they asked him, what then? 00:05:39.120 --> 00:05:40.040 Are you Elijah? 00:05:41.379 --> 00:05:46.199 Elijah was a really impressive prophet from 2 Kings 2. 00:05:46.500 --> 00:05:54.000 2 Kings 2, Elijah is taken up alive to heaven in a chariot of fire. 00:05:54.000 --> 00:06:06.740 And then in Malachi 4, 5, we're told this prophecy that Elijah would return before the great and awesome day of the Lord. 00:06:07.160 --> 00:06:16.240 And so what we have in common with the Christ and Elijah are these biblical figures who are being looked forward to coming back. 00:06:17.100 --> 00:06:18.240 They're looking for him. 00:06:18.240 --> 00:06:22.939 John the Baptist says in verse 21, oh, am I Elijah? 00:06:23.220 --> 00:06:23.980 I am not. 00:06:25.079 --> 00:06:26.540 And then there's another question. 00:06:26.740 --> 00:06:27.980 Verse 21, are you the prophet? 00:06:29.160 --> 00:06:34.519 It's another anticipated biblical figure who they are looking forward to. 00:06:35.939 --> 00:06:41.879 This time, this prophet is a reference to something that Moses wrote in Deuteronomy 18.15. 00:06:42.400 --> 00:06:47.060 God will raise up one like me, Moses says, from among you. 00:06:48.240 --> 00:06:56.579 This delegation sent from these Jews who are going to oppose Jesus, they're asking John the Baptist, are you the prophet? 00:06:57.620 --> 00:06:58.800 Flat out, no. am the voice of the one crying out in the wilderness. 00:07:36.659 --> 00:07:40.339 Make straight the way of the Lord as the prophet Isaiah said. 00:07:40.339 --> 00:07:43.159 This is Isaiah 40, verse 3. 00:07:43.459 --> 00:07:49.899 And what he's saying here is, I am the forerunner of the Lord. 00:07:50.899 --> 00:07:59.379 When we read here, make straight the way of the Lord, back in your Old Testament in Isaiah, that's all small caps. 00:08:00.079 --> 00:08:01.599 That's the way of Yahweh. 00:08:02.039 --> 00:08:02.719 The I am. 00:08:03.120 --> 00:08:05.939 He is going to go before the way of the Lord. 00:08:05.939 --> 00:08:11.779 And so what he's saying is, hey, I am someone you should be looking forward to. 00:08:12.439 --> 00:08:18.920 I am that voice in the wilderness making one you do not know. 00:09:00.580 --> 00:09:09.520 He goes on to say, even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie. 00:09:09.820 --> 00:09:14.160 In our common day, after John, he's not even worthy to untie his shoelaces. 00:10:30.639 --> 00:10:35.120 The next scene, scene two, is verses 29 through 34. 00:10:35.519 --> 00:10:42.319 And in this scene, we see John the Baptist seeing Jesus and making an announcement. 00:10:42.320 --> 00:10:47.720 And it's queued up in verse 29, the next day. 00:10:48.260 --> 00:10:49.960 That means there's a scene change.
