you've got is your heart. 00:07:46.899 --> 00:07:56.819 And what that means is we're responsible for what happens in our hearts. 00:07:58.579 --> 00:08:08.959 We are responsible for our thoughts, our feelings, our words, and our actions because they all flow out of the heart. 00:08:09.959 --> 00:08:11.579 Guard your heart above all else. 00:08:11.579 --> 00:08:14.079 For from it flow the through this account and we're going to see three encounters. 00:08:24.939 --> 00:08:25.779 Between Jesus. 00:08:26.639 --> 00:08:29.379 Verse 1 is between Jesus and a delegation from Jerusalem. 00:08:30.079 --> 00:08:31.759 And then Jesus and the people. 00:08:32.299 --> 00:08:34.439 And the third is Jesus and his disciples. 00:08:35.100 --> 00:08:39.799 And all throughout it, Jesus is dealing with this issue of what defiles a person. 00:08:40.579 --> 00:08:41.799 What makes them unclean? 00:08:41.879 --> 00:08:43.139 Is it washing your hands? 00:08:43.199 --> 00:08:44.179 Is it the food you eat? 00:08:45.679 --> 00:08:46.740 Jesus says no. 00:08:46.899 --> 00:08:48.439 It's from within. 00:08:48.439 --> 00:08:48.500 It's from within. 00:08:50.240 --> 00:08:55.779 After we walk through those accounts, I'm going to bring this to a point and then we're going to apply it to our lives. 00:08:55.779 --> 00:09:01.819 So let's begin in chapter 15 verses 1 through 9. 00:09:02.319 --> 00:09:02.799 Jesus. 00:09:03.519 --> 00:09:08.480 An encounter between Jesus and a delegation from Jerusalem. 00:09:08.480 --> 00:09:10.019 Now you've got to notice. 00:09:10.019 --> 00:09:17.139 Now you've got to notice in 51, the Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem. 00:09:17.360 --> 00:09:22.940 Up until this point, the Pharisees and scribes that Jesus has been dealing with have been local boys. 00:09:24.060 --> 00:09:24.920 City cops. 00:09:26.039 --> 00:09:26.940 County sheriff. 00:09:26.940 --> 00:09:35.080 And now, the folks down in Jerusalem have gotten word about Jesus. 00:09:35.720 --> 00:09:38.480 Now if you look at Matthew 14, 1. 00:09:39.140 --> 00:09:43.560 Remember Herod last week, we learned God word of Jesus fame. 00:09:43.700 --> 00:09:44.600 And he flipped out. 00:09:45.760 --> 00:09:46.700 He thought it was John the Baptist. 00:09:46.820 --> 00:09:47.900 Come back from the grave. 00:09:47.899 --> 00:09:54.419 And here, we have the religious establishment that's in Jerusalem. 00:09:54.620 --> 00:09:55.980 They get wind of Jesus. 00:09:56.679 --> 00:09:57.539 What he's teaching. 00:09:57.539 --> 00:10:02.179 And they're wondering if he's subverting them. 00:10:03.860 --> 00:10:08.759 And so the way to think about these guys is they're not the local law enforcement. 00:10:09.259 --> 00:10:11.039 These would be like the feds coming in. 00:10:12.819 --> 00:10:16.179 Coming in from the capital to check things out. 00:10:17.539 --> 00:10:20.439 The Pharisaical Bureau of Investigation. 00:10:22.279 --> 00:10:26.120 Now in 15.2, they approached Jesus with a question. 00:10:27.539 --> 00:10:30.699 Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? 00:10:31.959 --> 00:10:38.939 They show up and they watch Jesus' disciples eat food without washing their hands. 00:10:39.059 --> 00:10:43.039 Now you may be wondering, what is this tradition of the elders they're talking about? 00:10:43.480 --> 00:10:46.779 Well, they're not talking about the Bible itself. 00:10:47.439 --> 00:10:53.699 They're talking about a tradition that had been built around the Bible, the Old Testament, 00:10:53.699 --> 00:10:56.559 to help explain the Old Testament. 00:10:56.559 --> 00:10:59.039 It was an oral tradition. 00:10:59.479 --> 00:11:06.619 Have you ever seen pictures of the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. when it was being refurbished? 00:11:07.259 --> 00:11:12.619 It had scaffolding built all around it so workers can work on the outside of the Capitol. 00:11:12.739 --> 00:11:15.639 The only reason why you knew it was a Capitol, you saw the dome on the rotunda. 00:11:15.819 --> 00:11:17.079 You said, something's in there. 00:11:17.080 --> 00:11:27.540 The tradition of the elders was like scaffolding that the religious leaders had built around the Old Testament to help people understand it. 00:11:28.080 --> 00:11:32.080 If there was confusion over what a particular passage meant or how it applied. 00:11:32.080 --> 00:11:37.220 And so the intent was a good intent to help God's people understand God's word. 00:11:37.560 --> 00:11:38.420 But here's what happened. 00:11:40.120 --> 00:11:44.340 The scaffolding became permanent and authoritative. 00:11:44.340 --> 00:11:49.660 So instead of appealing to the command, people would appeal to the scaffolding. 00:11:51.399 --> 00:11:52.560 It's kind of like this. 00:11:52.680 --> 00:11:58.960 It's instead of the halls, the acts of kind of our government happening in the Capitol, 00:11:59.120 --> 00:12:01.220 it's like let's bring them out to the scaffolding. 00:12:01.220 --> 00:12:05.160 Come live out on the scaffolding, everyone. 00:12:07.740 --> 00:12:10.920 And so what was taking place was this tradition of the elders, 00:12:11.160 --> 00:12:13.100 what was meant to explain the Old Testament, 00:12:13.580 --> 00:12:17.860 started taking on authority on par with God's Scripture. 00:12:19.519 --> 00:12:24.540 You get a sense of this in 15.2 when they say, 00:12:24.540 --> 00:12:27.500 Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? 00:12:27.779 --> 00:12:31.000 That word break is the word transgress. 00:12:32.220 --> 00:12:34.980 They had raised it to such a degree that it's like, 00:12:35.379 --> 00:12:40.080 Oh, naughty, naughty on you for breaking, transgressing the tradition of the elders. 00:12:42.480 --> 00:12:47.399 And then in the second part of verse 2, they point to something. 00:12:47.540 --> 00:12:51.540 Your disciples, they're transgressing the tradition of the elders for, 00:12:51.540 --> 00:12:53.460 you see that at the end of verse 2, middle of verse 2, 00:12:53.779 --> 00:12:55.899 for they do not wash their hands when they eat. 00:12:57.240 --> 00:12:59.420 There's no command in the Old Testament 00:12:59.419 --> 00:13:04.939 that requires all Jews to wash their hands before every meal. 00:13:05.419 --> 00:13:06.199 There's no command. 00:13:07.439 --> 00:13:11.500 There were Old Testament commands that required priests to wash their hands 00:13:11.500 --> 00:13:14.939 before eating something that had been offered as a sacrifice. 00:13:14.940 --> 00:13:21.940 What appears to have happened is that certain Jews took the specific command to priests 00:13:21.940 --> 00:13:26.200 and they generalized the command to all of God's people. 00:13:26.200 --> 00:13:37.960 So when the Jerusalem delegation sees Jesus' disciples not washing their hands before they eat, 00:13:38.360 --> 00:13:42.680 whip, whip, whip, whip, whip, weep, we got a problem. 00:13:42.679 --> 00:13:49.799 Now before you start thinking, man, those Pharisees back in the first century, 00:13:50.159 --> 00:13:53.120 they made mountains out of molehills, I'll tell you what. 00:13:55.599 --> 00:14:02.639 No playing cards, no dancing, no alcoholic consumption. 00:14:02.639 --> 00:14:06.860 If you don't homeschool your children, something's wrong with you. 00:14:08.559 --> 00:14:10.860 This kind of thinking exists today. 00:14:12.319 --> 00:14:18.759 We can make things that are not God's Word on the same level as God's Word. 00:14:18.759 --> 00:14:27.659 Now remember, behind all this kind of hand-washing thinking 00:14:27.659 --> 00:14:32.299 is a deep and pervasive concern for ritual purity. 00:14:32.980 --> 00:14:33.860 Being clean. 00:14:34.439 --> 00:14:38.339 If a Jew touched something that wasn't clean, that Jew became unclean 00:14:38.339 --> 00:14:42.719 and they would not be allowed to participate in the religious life of their family and friends. 00:14:44.139 --> 00:14:51.000 Do you remember back in Matthew 9, there's a woman who has this 12-year-old issue of blood? 00:14:52.600 --> 00:14:57.039 And no one would touch her because she was unclean, according to Leviticus. 00:14:57.659 --> 00:15:02.399 If anyone touched her, they would become unclean. 00:15:04.459 --> 00:15:10.000 What's amazing is she once touches Jesus and Jesus doesn't become unclean, she becomes clean. 00:15:11.219 --> 00:15:12.339 That's what Jesus does. 00:15:14.219 --> 00:15:16.039 So what's going on here is this. 00:15:16.299 --> 00:15:19.480 This delegation comes up, they're looking for anything, 00:15:19.699 --> 00:15:22.220 they see Jesus' disciples not washing their hands, 00:15:22.220 --> 00:15:26.040 and they say, hey, you know, you're breaking the transgression, 00:15:26.180 --> 00:15:28.620 you're transgressing the tradition of the elders. 00:15:30.379 --> 00:15:32.040 They're essentially saying, 00:15:32.920 --> 00:15:34.420 you disciples, you're unclean. 00:15:35.560 --> 00:15:37.700 And this guy teaching you, 00:15:38.160 --> 00:15:40.860 he's transgressing the tradition of the elders too. 00:15:41.899 --> 00:15:44.180 He's not teaching what he should be teaching. 00:15:44.179 --> 00:15:48.079 So there's the charge of subversion. 00:15:49.000 --> 00:15:49.839 It's implied. 00:15:52.699 --> 00:15:55.159 Now to Jesus' counter charge. 00:15:55.779 --> 00:15:59.539 You're going to see Jesus do something here that may seem a little tough. 00:16:00.519 --> 00:16:03.159 Up until this point, Jesus has kind of swapped some, 00:16:03.259 --> 00:16:05.719 traded some words with the Pharisees. 00:16:05.720 --> 00:16:08.240 We're going to see him bringing up a notch right now. 00:16:09.500 --> 00:16:10.960 And he's going to bring it up a notch 00:16:10.960 --> 00:16:14.440 because what's at stake is the right understanding of God's word 00:16:14.440 --> 00:16:17.080 and rightly understanding the human condition. 00:16:17.399 --> 00:16:20.139 That's why he's going to respond the way he does. 00:16:21.060 --> 00:16:23.740 And we see his response starting in verse 3. 00:16:24.259 --> 00:16:25.660 Jesus answered them and said, 00:16:26.180 --> 00:16:29.440 and why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 00:16:29.759 --> 00:16:35.259 That word break is the same word that the Pharisees had used 00:16:35.259 --> 00:16:36.299 up in verse 2. 00:16:36.679 --> 00:16:40.600 Jesus is saying, let me just use that word transgress rightly. 00:16:42.439 --> 00:16:46.379 You, why are you transgressing father and your mother, 00:17:10.160 --> 00:17:13.640 and whoever reviles father or mother must surely die. 00:17:14.080 --> 00:17:18.539 Those are both taken from Exodus chapter 120, verse 12. 00:17:18.660 --> 00:17:21.340 That's the fifth commandment in the Ten Commandments. 00:17:21.680 --> 00:17:23.180 And the second one where he says, 00:17:23.279 --> 00:17:25.380 whoever reviles father
