00:07:51.360 or we must have a certain amount of money in our bank account 00:07:51.360 --> 00:07:53.639 in order to be safe and secure. 00:07:54.620 --> 00:07:58.920 Other voices tell us that we must be married with children by a certain age. 00:07:59.699 --> 00:08:03.680 Or maybe the biggest voice of influence in our lives is actually our own. 00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:08.019 We tell ourselves quietly that we must look or feel a certain way 00:08:08.019 --> 00:08:11.220 in order to be fully happy or fulfilled. 00:08:12.840 --> 00:08:16.500 And while there may be some wisdom and truth in some of these voices, 00:08:16.720 --> 00:08:21.680 at the end of the day, all of these voices are somewhat fallible and imperfect. 00:08:22.460 --> 00:08:24.800 Our ears and our hearts may be drawn to these voices, 00:08:24.800 --> 00:08:29.259 but none of them can truly tell us what will satisfy the longing of our hearts. 00:08:29.259 --> 00:08:35.299 And today, as we dive back into the book of John in chapter 5, 00:08:35.939 --> 00:08:37.340 we will hear another voice. 00:08:37.840 --> 00:08:40.019 We'll hear a better voice. 00:08:40.379 --> 00:08:43.139 We'll hear from the voice of Jesus Christ. 00:08:44.259 --> 00:08:47.700 Jesus is the better voice because his is the voice that heals. 00:08:49.399 --> 00:08:50.879 His is the voice that warns. 00:08:51.279 --> 00:08:52.419 He is the voice of authority. 00:08:53.039 --> 00:08:55.639 And his voice raises the dead. 00:08:55.639 --> 00:08:59.659 Let's unpack God's word together. 00:09:01.399 --> 00:09:02.399 The voice that heals. 00:09:02.860 --> 00:09:06.379 So our passage today, as Kristen read, begins with Jesus going up to Jerusalem 00:09:06.379 --> 00:09:09.279 during a feast, which is a celebration. 00:09:10.199 --> 00:09:16.379 And there he stops at a pool of water called Bethesda or Bethsaida, 00:09:16.480 --> 00:09:17.199 some people call it. 00:09:17.340 --> 00:09:19.279 I think if you go to Israel, I think people do call it Bethsaida. 00:09:20.019 --> 00:09:20.919 That's not mince words. 00:09:21.059 --> 00:09:22.419 Let's not argue over words here. 00:09:22.419 --> 00:09:27.919 In verse 3, we read that at Bethsaida lay a multitude of invalids, 00:09:28.199 --> 00:09:29.979 blind, lame, and paralyzed. 00:09:31.079 --> 00:09:35.000 This was a place that many sick people went to to try to find healing. 00:09:35.659 --> 00:09:39.879 They believed that they could just dip their body into that pool of water. 00:09:39.959 --> 00:09:42.039 When that water was stirred, they'd be healed. 00:09:43.559 --> 00:09:45.179 By the way, this is a real place. 00:09:45.559 --> 00:09:49.819 It was excavated in the late 19th to early 20th century. 00:09:49.820 --> 00:09:53.780 That's a picture of Bethsaida in the modern day. 00:09:54.440 --> 00:09:56.860 Another reason to believe the veracity of the Bible. 00:09:57.980 --> 00:10:01.800 Now at Bethsaida, a man was lying there who had been paralyzed for 38 years, 00:10:02.140 --> 00:10:02.920 a lifetime. 00:10:03.780 --> 00:10:07.840 And Jesus, already knowing this man's condition, he asks the man, 00:10:08.720 --> 00:10:09.460 you want to be healed? 00:10:10.400 --> 00:10:13.020 Perhaps an odd question to ask a man who's paralyzed. 00:10:13.019 --> 00:10:18.279 But as we always say at Watermark, Jesus is the one who approaches us first. 00:10:18.779 --> 00:10:20.960 He's the one that calls us first. 00:10:21.199 --> 00:10:22.419 He initiates. 00:10:22.679 --> 00:10:25.179 It's up for us to respond to him. 00:10:26.059 --> 00:10:29.139 And Jesus, in his compassion and kindness, 00:10:29.319 --> 00:10:31.779 he sees a man suffering, paralyzed, 00:10:32.139 --> 00:10:33.899 and simply through the power of his voice, --> 00:10:40.620 And after 38 years of paralysis, 00:10:41.259 --> 00:10:42.759 this man is completely healed. 00:10:43.179 --> 00:10:45.279 He picks up his bed and he walks off. 00:10:46.559 --> 00:10:47.559 Two takeaways, 00:10:48.199 --> 00:10:50.340 at least two takeaways from this story. 00:10:50.439 --> 00:10:51.299 Two I'll mention right now. 00:10:51.960 --> 00:10:52.340 First, 00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:54.919 Jesus cares about our pain. 00:10:56.120 --> 00:11:00.319 Now let's not rush past this miraculous event too quickly. 00:11:01.299 --> 00:11:03.019 I mean, have you ever seen someone paralyzed, 00:11:03.759 --> 00:11:05.740 just miraculously get up and walk? 00:11:05.740 --> 00:11:10.820 What do you think about Jesus' ability to miraculously heal? 00:11:11.720 --> 00:11:12.460 Just a myth? 00:11:13.379 --> 00:11:15.700 Or maybe this stuff happened 2,000 years ago, 00:11:16.100 --> 00:11:17.019 or in the Bible, 00:11:17.159 --> 00:11:19.039 but it doesn't really happen today. 00:11:19.940 --> 00:11:21.779 Well, Bethsaida is a real place. 00:11:22.840 --> 00:11:24.519 Jesus really did heal this man, 00:11:24.600 --> 00:11:25.779 and many, many more. 00:11:25.940 --> 00:11:28.419 Too many, actually, to record in the Bible. 00:11:29.779 --> 00:11:32.639 And today, Jesus is still healing. 00:11:32.639 --> 00:11:34.980 And not just physical sickness. 00:11:35.740 --> 00:11:37.039 All across the world, 00:11:37.159 --> 00:11:40.879 there are stories of Jesus healing people from anxiety and depression. 00:11:41.379 --> 00:11:43.940 He's healing us from addiction and bondage. 00:11:44.360 --> 00:11:46.220 He's healing broken relationships. 00:11:46.779 --> 00:11:50.180 Because Jesus cares deeply about our pain. 00:11:51.200 --> 00:11:52.360 When he walked this earth, 00:11:52.519 --> 00:11:56.580 Jesus didn't hang out in the courts of nobles and kings. 00:11:56.879 --> 00:11:58.100 He went into the mission field, 00:11:58.159 --> 00:12:00.080 where it was uncomfortable and dangerous. 00:12:00.080 --> 00:12:03.400 He much preferred the hospital over the palace. 00:12:04.040 --> 00:12:04.920 And today, 00:12:05.440 --> 00:12:05.840 today, are going down before me. 00:12:48.240 --> 00:12:51.059 Not exactly a model of faith. 00:12:51.059 --> 00:12:54.799 Imagine you're at the hospital in Hong Kong. 00:12:54.919 --> 00:12:55.799 You're in the waiting room, 00:12:56.159 --> 00:12:57.039 waiting to be treated. 00:12:58.059 --> 00:12:59.459 And Jesus Christ comes in. 00:12:59.559 --> 00:13:00.519 He walks through the front doors. 00:13:00.599 --> 00:13:01.299 And he asks you, 00:13:02.119 --> 00:13:02.779 son or daughter, 00:13:02.839 --> 00:13:03.819 do you want to be healed? 00:13:04.599 --> 00:13:05.359 And you say, 00:13:05.619 --> 00:13:07.500 I can't get to the operating theater. 00:13:08.779 --> 00:13:09.339 And yet, 00:13:10.119 --> 00:13:12.979 Jesus still heals this man. 00:13:14.599 --> 00:13:16.919 But then there are many other people in the Bible. 00:13:17.439 --> 00:13:18.199 And I imagine, 00:13:18.719 --> 00:13:20.439 some even here this morning, 00:13:20.440 --> 00:13:23.240 who have been praying faithfully for healing, 00:13:23.420 --> 00:13:24.820 physical or emotional. 00:13:25.960 --> 00:13:27.080 And you've been praying, 00:13:27.320 --> 00:13:29.620 and nothing has happened thus far. 00:13:29.720 --> 00:13:30.700 And maybe you're wondering, 00:13:30.880 --> 00:13:31.140 Jesus, 00:13:31.480 --> 00:13:32.740 are you even listening to me? 00:13:33.660 --> 00:13:33.840 Well, 00:13:48.500 or through miraculous healing. 00:13:48.500 --> 00:13:51.580 But what we have full confidence in is this. 00:13:52.179 --> 00:13:55.179 God is both sovereign and good. 00:13:55.720 --> 00:24:19.759 --> 00:24:24.420 He's not just a good teacher of morals and ethics. 00:24:24.759 --> 00:24:29.279 Jesus claimed to be God's son and equal to God, 00:24:29.319 --> 00:24:29.759 the father. 00:24:30.200 --> 00:24:32.420 And in the first century in Israel, 00:24:32.420 --> 00:24:34.720 this was an incredibly audacious, 00:24:34.879 --> 00:24:35.839 absurd claim. 00:24:35.839 --> 00:24:37.679 Because for thousands of years, 00:24:37.679 --> 00:24:39.159 the people of Israel, 00:24:39.159 --> 00:24:41.319 they had heard how God, 00:24:41.859 --> 00:24:42.759 God of their
