That's the main point of my sermon this morning. 00:07:17.039 --> 00:07:22.419 Looking forward to the new Jerusalem in which we will have unhindered fellowship with God. 00:07:23.019 --> 00:07:26.579 We should live holy lives and hold on to the testimony of Jesus. 00:07:26.799 --> 00:07:29.519 And I'm going to talk about the new Jerusalem in three different facets. 00:07:30.319 --> 00:07:32.419 First, it's unassailable in its security. 00:07:32.420 --> 00:07:35.160 Second, it is unflawed in its symmetry. 00:07:35.699 --> 00:07:38.660 And third, it's unparalleled in its splendor. 00:07:39.939 --> 00:07:45.800 First, we can look forward to the new Jerusalem because it will be unassailable in its security. 00:07:46.540 --> 00:07:47.560 It says in verse 9, 00:07:48.060 --> 00:07:52.420 Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues 00:07:52.420 --> 00:07:53.920 and spoke to me, saying, 00:07:54.400 --> 00:07:57.500 Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb. 00:07:59.080 --> 00:08:01.540 This might sound familiar to you, and that's no coincidence, 00:08:01.540 --> 00:08:04.260 because one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls 00:08:04.260 --> 00:08:11.560 came and made a very similar announcement about Babylon the great prostitute earlier in chapter 17, verse 1. 00:08:12.280 --> 00:08:12.960 He said there, 00:08:13.300 --> 00:08:16.800 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, 00:08:17.180 --> 00:08:23.560 Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters. 00:08:23.939 --> 00:08:28.800 So these are parallel introductions of two opposite realities. 00:08:28.800 --> 00:08:35.539 And it intentionally draws a contrast between the great prostitute and the bride, the wife of the Lamb. 00:08:36.580 --> 00:08:41.379 Remember, they're both depicted as women, and they're both depicted as cities. 00:08:41.759 --> 00:08:44.120 And that's how we know these are metaphors and symbols, 00:08:44.259 --> 00:08:47.060 because you cannot be a woman and a city at the same time. 00:08:47.059 --> 00:08:54.039 The great prostitute is Babylon, the city of man. 00:08:54.719 --> 00:09:00.379 And the wife of the Lamb is the holy city, Jerusalem, that comes down out of heaven from God. 00:09:01.259 --> 00:09:04.359 Babylon has written on her forehead the name, 00:09:04.699 --> 00:09:09.739 Babylon the Great, Mother of Prostitutes and of Earth's Abominations, it said in 17.5. 00:09:09.740 --> 00:09:15.560 But the New Jerusalem has the name of God and of the Lamb on her forehead. 00:09:16.080 --> 00:09:17.600 In Revelation 21, verse 4. 00:09:18.899 --> 00:09:21.820 Babylon the harlot is seated on many waters. 00:09:23.919 --> 00:09:27.460 That's a symbol of how she committed adultery with the kings of the earth. 00:09:27.580 --> 00:09:31.580 Her idolatrous maritime commerce represented by these many waters. 00:09:31.580 --> 00:09:35.680 But in stark contrast, the New Jerusalem has only one source of water, 00:09:35.759 --> 00:09:40.500 the spring of living water, the river of life that flows from the throne of God and the Lamb 00:09:40.500 --> 00:09:45.980 in the new city, the holy city, because she is the faithful one, the faithful bride. 00:09:49.100 --> 00:09:55.000 In the end, Revelation 17.16 told us that the prostitute will be made desolate and naked, 00:09:57.000 --> 00:10:00.300 but the bride of the Lamb will be clothed in white. 00:10:01.580 --> 00:10:14.780 The prostitute is used by men selfishly. 00:10:15.580 --> 00:10:20.259 The wife is loved by men selflessly. 00:10:22.100 --> 00:10:23.720 He says in Ephesians 5.25, 00:10:23.720 --> 00:10:29.580 Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. 00:10:29.580 --> 00:10:32.080 That's what wives deserve. 00:10:34.360 --> 00:10:39.200 Do you want to be a prostitute that is used and abused and discarded? 00:10:41.080 --> 00:10:47.920 Or do you want to be the bride, the wife of the Lamb, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 00:10:48.139 --> 00:10:49.700 and be cherished by him forever? 00:10:49.700 --> 00:11:02.720 If you want that, then hold on to the testimony of Jesus and endure to the end and forsake the idolatrous desires of this world. 00:11:02.720 --> 00:11:09.940 Early in Revelation 12, the woman who represented the people of God took shelter in the wilderness, 00:11:10.540 --> 00:11:16.399 where she was spiritually protected by God, but physically vulnerable and persecuted by the dragon. 00:11:16.399 --> 00:11:22.679 But in a new heaven and a new earth, as we see here, we will no longer be in the wilderness. 00:11:23.679 --> 00:11:24.699 It says in verse 10, 00:11:25.399 --> 00:11:29.019 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great high mountain, 00:11:29.519 --> 00:11:34.120 and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God. 00:11:35.220 --> 00:11:38.000 We'll be on the mountaintop in eternity. 00:11:39.340 --> 00:11:42.960 Throughout scripture, wilderness is the place of journeying. 00:11:42.960 --> 00:11:44.460 It's the place of testing. 00:11:45.340 --> 00:11:49.139 Think of Israel's journey through the wilderness when they are tested for 40 years, 00:11:49.240 --> 00:11:56.840 and finally they arrive in the holy land, in Canaan, Mount Zion, where they worship God in the temple. 00:11:57.519 --> 00:12:04.200 Or compare that to Jesus' journey into the wilderness where he is tested and tempted by Satan for 40 days. 00:12:05.060 --> 00:12:09.080 And then after that, he begins his ministry and climbs up to give his sermon on the mount. 00:12:09.080 --> 00:12:14.879 In scripture, wilderness is the place of not yet. 00:12:15.840 --> 00:12:18.940 The mountaintop is the place of finally here. 00:12:19.620 --> 00:12:24.320 The mountain is the place of arrival, the place of promise, place of revelation, 00:12:24.560 --> 00:12:27.960 the place of God's presence and communion with him. 00:12:28.600 --> 00:12:33.800 And that's why Ezekiel 40 verses 1 to 2 prophesied that the end time city and temple 00:12:33.799 --> 00:12:36.379 will be set on a very high mountain. 00:12:36.979 --> 00:12:40.339 And so the new Jerusalem is on a great high mountain. 00:12:41.819 --> 00:12:46.059 And it says in verse 11 that this holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God 00:12:46.059 --> 00:12:53.519 has the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 00:12:53.519 --> 00:13:00.699 John reported something very similar in his earlier vision of the throne room of God in heaven in Revelation 4. 00:13:01.279 --> 00:13:04.460 He who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian, 00:13:04.539 --> 00:13:07.600 and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald. 00:13:08.000 --> 00:13:12.240 And before the throne, there was, as it were, a sea of glass like crystal. 00:13:13.460 --> 00:13:16.240 The glory of God is resplendent. 00:13:16.659 --> 00:13:17.480 It's brilliant. 00:13:17.480 --> 00:13:23.920 And on that day, the glory of God will be our glory also. 00:13:25.779 --> 00:13:27.360 Know what it says in verse 11. 00:13:27.820 --> 00:13:33.220 The new Jerusalem will come down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God. 00:13:34.279 --> 00:13:38.519 The fact that this new Jerusalem comes down out of heaven from God, 00:13:39.060 --> 00:13:43.519 the fact that this new Jerusalem is not built up from the bottom up here on earth, 00:13:43.519 --> 00:13:47.720 but whether it comes down from God, shows us that our fellowship with God, 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:51.240 our eternal destiny, is not a human achievement. 00:13:52.240 --> 00:13:53.939 It is a gift from God. 00:13:56.519 --> 00:14:01.279 And the fact that the glory of the new Jerusalem will not be our own glory, 00:14:01.419 --> 00:14:03.100 but the glory of God, it says, 00:14:03.600 --> 00:14:07.460 tells us that God's people are those who have humbled themselves before God, 00:14:07.779 --> 00:14:11.399 those who do not seek or boast in their own glory, 00:14:11.399 --> 00:14:13.959 but rather seek the glory of God alone. 00:14:16.860 --> 00:14:19.039 Unlike the city of Babel, remember that? 00:14:20.159 --> 00:14:23.799 Genesis 11, which was a monument to human hubris, 00:14:24.360 --> 00:14:27.799 built by sinful men who said to themselves, 00:14:27.980 --> 00:14:32.679 come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, 00:14:33.240 --> 00:14:36.480 and let us make a name for ourselves. 00:14:36.919 --> 00:14:37.860 That was their motivation. 00:14:37.860 --> 00:14:41.639 The holy city of Jerusalem, in contrast, 00:14:41.759 --> 00:14:44.300 comes down out of heaven from God as a gift. 00:14:45.360 --> 00:14:49.800 And it will have the names of the 12 tribes of the sons of Israel inscribed on the gates, 00:14:50.120 --> 00:14:53.539 and the names of the 12 apostles of the Lamb written on the foundation. 00:14:55.820 --> 00:14:58.379 People who have pledged their allegiance to Jesus, --> 00:15:47.240 alongside Bill Gates and Bill Hewlett and Bob Swanson, David Packard, 00:15:47.600 --> 00:15:50.840 Mitch Caper and Steve Jobs and Thomas Edison? 00:15:50.840 --> 00:15:57.600 Listen, I assure you that all of those names will be forgotten one day. 00:15:58.220 --> 00:16:03.019 And only the names that are written in the Lamb's book of life, 00:16:03.560 --> 00:16:07.759 only those who belong to the church of Christ, 00:16:08.160 --> 00:16:09.399 the people of God, 00:16:09.940 --> 00:16:13.560 they will have their names inscribed forever on the 12 gates, 00:16:14.019 --> 00:16:16.320 the 12 foundations of the New Jerusalem. 00:16:16.759 --> 00:16:18.280 Only they will be remembered forever. 00:16:18.279 --> 00:16:21.919 So where is your treasure? 00:16:23.179 --> Gentiles are fellow citizens 00:16:56.179 --> 00:16:58.419 and members of the household of God 00:16:58.419 --> 00:17:01.259 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, 00:17:01.559 --> 00:17:03.559 Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone. 00:17:04.680 --> 00:17:07.819 There are not two segregated cities in the new Jerusalem. 00:17:09.079 --> 00:17:11.440 There's only one new spiritual unity, which is not yet. 00:17:55.099 --> 00:18:00.159 But in the new Jerusalem, we will be perfectly one. 00:18:02.559 --> 00:18:04.779 Verse 12 continues the description of the city. 00:18:05.079 --> 00:18:08.039 It had a great high wall with 12 gates 00:18:08.039 --> 00:18:09.699 and at the gates, 12 angels. 00:18:10.719 --> 00:18:12.240 Earlier in verse 10, we were told 00:18:12.240 --> 00:18:14.879 that the new Jerusalem sits atop a great high mountain. 00:18:15.379 --> 00:18:17.679 And now we are told that on top of that great high mountain, 00:18:17.759 --> 00:18:19.659 there's also a great high wall. 00:18:21.959 --> 00:18:24.299 As if the mountain itself were in sufficient defense. 00:18:25.099 --> 00:18:27.099 And this wall must be exceedingly high 00:18:27.099 --> 00:18:28.959 since it's protecting a city 00:18:28.959 --> 00:18:31.439 that it says is 12,000 stadia in height, 00:18:31.799 --> 00:18:32.799 according to verse 16. 00:18:34.079 --> 00:19:02.039 The new Jerusalem is 7,392,000 feet tall. 00:19:04.659 --> 00:19:06.519 As I said earlier, this is a metaphor. 00:19:06.779 --> 00:19:08.159 It's figurative and symbolic. 00:19:08.339 --> 00:19:11.000 It's conveying, but it is conveying a spiritual reality. 00:19:11.779 --> 00:19:13.740 It's supposed to boggle our minds. 00:19:15.000 --> 00:19:16.339 If a city is that tall,
