00:01:09.019 who is regularly propositioning us with various kinds of seductions. 00:01:09.200 --> 00:01:13.000 And they run along the lines of pleasure and prosperity, 00:01:13.659 --> 00:01:17.240 and they're designed to win our hearts away from our first love. 00:01:17.239 --> 00:01:25.019 There are all sorts of seductions with which the great prostitute seeks to seduce us. 00:01:25.140 --> 00:01:30.019 There are the sexual seductions, and then there's the entertainment seductions. 00:01:30.299 --> 00:01:35.060 There's the financial seductions, knowledge seductions, success seductions. 00:01:35.679 --> 00:01:38.719 There is power seductions and comfort seductions. 00:01:39.199 --> 00:01:40.819 It's all about seduction. 00:01:43.039 --> 00:01:45.739 Capturing the desires of your God. 00:02:24.460 --> 00:02:28.860 They're the full and final judgments of God on earth. 00:02:28.860 --> 00:02:38.680 And it's the seventh bold judgment, verse 19, that we read that the great city Babylon was utterly destroyed. 00:02:38.680 --> 00:02:41.840 So here's what's going on. 00:02:43.460 --> 00:02:50.700 What's referenced, and we're given a sneak peek of in verse 19, chapter 17 and 18 to him the details surrounding her. 00:03:10.900 --> 00:03:18.680 And then in chapter 18, what we see is a description of her total destruction with various responses from various people. 00:03:20.100 need to know this. 00:04:06.520 --> 00:04:08.039 You're not to marvel at her. 00:04:09.180 --> 00:04:10.659 You're to marvel at something else. 00:04:11.699 --> 00:04:15.420 So who is this woman that we see in chapter 17? 00:04:15.560 --> 00:04:16.699 Well, verse 1, we read, 00:04:19.399 --> 00:04:22.500 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, 00:04:22.540 --> 00:04:24.720 this is one of the angels who just poured out one of bowl judgments. 00:04:24.720 --> 00:04:26.780 He says to John, 00:04:26.980 --> 00:04:31.680 Come and I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who's seated on many waters. 00:04:32.320 --> 00:04:33.480 The great prostitute. 00:04:33.620 --> 00:04:35.640 The ultimate prostitute. 00:04:36.600 --> 00:04:39.520 Prostitution is an abomination in God's sight. 00:04:39.620 --> 00:04:40.340 And here's why. 00:04:42.300 --> 00:04:48.120 Prostitution is this distorted twisting of God's good gift of marriage 00:04:48.120 --> 00:04:51.579 between one man and one woman for life. 00:04:52.160 --> 00:05:00.579 It's this twisted distortion that runs roughshod over the exclusive relationship 00:05:00.579 --> 00:05:05.360 between one man and one woman for sexuality to be expressed. 00:05:05.360 --> 00:05:12.699 So prostitution is this awful distortion of this good thing called marriage. 00:05:14.040 --> 00:05:18.920 And in the Bible, this infidelity gets used as a metaphor. 00:05:20.840 --> 00:05:25.800 We see it in like Ezekiel 16, in the book of Hosea. 00:05:27.340 --> 00:05:32.639 Prostitution is a metaphor for God's people being unfaithful to God. 00:05:32.639 --> 00:05:37.459 And it's always connected to idolatry. 00:05:38.259 --> 00:05:42.879 People rejecting the one true great covenant making God 00:05:42.879 --> 00:05:47.680 and going after other false gods who cannot deliver. 00:05:49.379 --> 00:05:57.360 And so prostitution throughout your Bible is used to talk about spiritual adultery or idolatry. 00:05:57.360 --> 00:06:01.300 Who is this woman? 00:06:01.439 --> 00:06:03.020 She's the great prostitute. 00:06:04.420 --> 00:06:16.180 She is a spiritual whore leading the nations away from the exclusive worship of the one true God. 00:06:16.540 --> 00:06:17.340 That's who this is. 00:06:18.720 --> 00:06:23.199 And if you notice, and I think it's verse 5, she's going by another name. 00:06:23.199 --> 00:06:27.539 On her forehead is written, Babylon the Great. 00:06:30.560 --> 00:06:38.360 This woman that we're seeing here is the great city that is dominating over the kings of the earth. 00:06:38.439 --> 00:06:40.579 Just let your eyes fall in verse 18. 00:06:41.060 --> 00:06:48.159 And the woman, the angel tells us, that you saw is the great city that is dominating over the earth. 00:06:48.160 --> 00:06:52.260 Now flip, just look back to verse 19 in chapter 16. 00:06:52.360 --> 00:06:56.560 The great city was split into three parts and the cities of the nations fell. 00:06:56.960 --> 00:07:01.740 And God remembered Babylon the Great to make her drain the cup of the wine of the fury of his wrath. 00:07:04.820 --> 00:07:08.620 What you need to know about Babylon is if you're familiar with the book of Daniel, 00:07:08.740 --> 00:07:10.400 Nebuchadnezzar was in Babylon. 00:07:10.399 --> 00:07:15.620 Babylon is a city that's opposed to God and oppresses God's people. 00:07:16.819 --> 00:07:19.739 But Babylon gets its namesake from another city. 00:07:20.839 --> 00:07:21.399 Babel. 00:07:22.259 --> 00:07:23.299 Genesis chapter 11. 00:07:23.379 --> 00:07:24.679 Remember the story of Babel? 00:07:26.099 --> 00:07:29.879 Humankind organized in rebellion against God, 00:07:30.060 --> 00:07:33.739 builds a tower in their pride to make them equal with God. 00:07:34.079 --> 00:07:34.639 Remember that? 00:07:34.639 --> 00:07:42.479 So for this lady to be labeled a prostitute in Babylon is no compliment. 00:07:44.560 --> 00:07:51.879 We're told in 1718 that this woman, this prostitute, is this great city, Babylon. 00:07:52.399 --> 00:07:57.819 A people organized in spiritual rebellion against God. 00:07:58.060 --> 00:08:00.279 And it transcends history. 00:08:01.120 --> 00:08:03.419 This prostitute has showed up as Babel. 00:08:03.420 --> 00:08:14.280 Babylon, Nineveh, Tyre, Sidon, Sodom, Gomorrah, Jerusalem, Rome, Washington, D.C., New York, L.A., Hollywood, Sunset Strip, Huey Lewis and the News. 00:08:16.379 --> 00:08:21.720 It's all a way of describing humanity in organized rebellion against God. 00:08:23.720 --> 00:08:25.920 Same horror. 00:08:26.800 --> 00:08:28.100 Different cities. 00:08:28.100 --> 00:08:34.860 And the one great city represents, this Babylon represents opposition to God. 00:08:36.019 --> 00:08:40.040 And so the prostitute Babylon has her own community. 00:08:40.600 --> 00:08:44.360 She has her own desires, values, goals, and methods. 00:08:44.800 --> 00:08:53.779 And the hallmark of Babylon the prostitute is the relentless pursuit of pleasure and prosperity. 00:08:53.779 --> 00:08:55.860 Apart from God. 00:08:56.899 --> 00:08:58.379 She is a seductress. 00:08:59.259 --> 00:09:04.439 So, so far what we've learned is that this great, this woman is the great prostitute Babylon. 00:09:04.440 --> 00:09:15.540 And for those of us who may be familiar with other passages in
