we're going to talk first about wondering minds. 00:06:27.599 --> 00:06:31.779 Luke, he recounts the details of this first Easter morning. 00:06:32.620 --> 00:06:36.680 And in doing so, in verse 10, he names these female disciples of Jesus. 00:06:37.139 --> 00:06:41.539 Mary, Magdalene, Joanna, Mary, the mother of James, and the other women. 00:06:41.540 --> 00:06:46.020 And he says that they took spices to the tomb. 00:06:46.100 --> 00:06:46.819 Why did they do that? 00:06:46.900 --> 00:06:55.120 Well, they wanted to honor Jesus one last time by embalming his corpse with these spices. 00:06:56.060 --> 00:07:00.759 And they were not thinking, hey, we've got the spices in case he's still dead. 00:07:01.620 --> 00:07:05.560 But let's hope that he's alive again and we can all sing the Hallelujah Chorus. 00:07:05.560 --> 00:07:05.959 Right? 00:07:07.240 --> 00:07:11.839 They knew what we know, which is that dead bodies stay dead. 00:07:12.819 --> 00:07:15.579 And this is not a princess bride situation. 00:07:15.579 --> 00:07:20.800 If you grew up in that movie where Jesus is mostly dead but a little bit alive. 00:07:21.079 --> 00:07:21.240 Right? 00:07:22.040 --> 00:07:24.439 The Romans were masters at crucifixion. 00:07:24.560 --> 00:07:25.680 Jesus is all dead. 00:07:26.620 --> 00:07:29.439 And these women were not at all prepared for what they would find. 00:07:29.500 --> 00:07:32.660 When they arrived at the tomb, they had an incredible shock. 00:07:32.660 --> 00:07:36.300 And they're asking themselves, like, who rolled away this massive stone? 00:07:36.560 --> 00:07:41.000 What happened to the Roman guard that was here guarding this place? 00:07:41.200 --> 00:07:44.080 And why is Jesus' body not inside the tomb? 00:07:44.120 --> 00:07:46.740 And it says in verse 4 that they were wondering. 00:07:48.120 --> 00:07:49.540 Their minds were wondering. 00:07:49.800 --> 00:07:51.140 They were perplexed. 00:07:51.200 --> 00:07:52.460 They were bewildered. 00:07:52.540 --> 00:07:54.000 And maybe that's how you feel today. 00:07:54.060 --> 00:07:54.600 You're wondering. 00:07:55.920 --> 00:08:02.580 Well, suddenly, just like in the Christmas story with the angels that come to those shepherds in the field of Bethlehem, 00:08:02.659 --> 00:08:06.599 these heavenly, angelic beings, these messengers from God, 00:08:06.959 --> 00:08:12.180 they come and announce this crazy, breaking news that Jesus is living. 00:08:13.159 --> 00:08:14.839 And here's what they say in verse 5. 00:08:14.919 --> 00:08:15.139 They say, 00:08:15.219 --> 00:08:17.539 Why do you look for the living among the dead? 00:08:18.339 --> 00:08:19.159 He is not here. 00:08:19.240 --> 00:08:19.759 He has risen. 00:08:19.860 --> 00:08:22.740 Remember how he told you while he was still with you in Galilee, 00:08:22.740 --> 00:08:25.979 the Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, 00:08:26.060 --> 00:08:30.240 be crucified, and on the third day be raised again. 00:08:30.240 --> 00:08:36.820 The message from God to these women is that Jesus is passed from the realm of the dead, 00:08:36.919 --> 00:08:39.220 from the realm of the dying where we all exist. 00:08:40.299 --> 00:08:45.919 And he's gone through death, out the other side, into the life of the age to come. 00:08:46.779 --> 00:08:53.320 And there he is the living one in this new resurrected glorious body 00:08:53.320 --> 00:08:57.320 as the first fruits of God's new creation. 00:08:58.440 --> 00:09:00.680 And some of us might read this story and say, 00:09:00.800 --> 00:09:02.100 Ah, I see what's going on. 00:09:03.160 --> 00:09:04.879 Jesus is metaphorically living. 00:09:05.740 --> 00:09:07.640 Jesus is spiritually risen. 00:09:08.480 --> 00:09:11.080 That this is a wonderful mythic symbol. 00:09:11.460 --> 00:09:13.680 That good triumphs over evil. 00:09:13.679 --> 00:09:17.159 And that life continues in the face of death. 00:09:17.159 --> 00:09:19.919 And that as dark as things get, there's always the dawn. 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:23.679 No matter how bad life is, we can always have hope. 00:09:24.959 --> 00:09:27.579 And so the question is, is this a spiritual metaphor? 00:09:28.659 --> 00:09:31.159 Is this a legend that never happened? 00:09:31.239 --> 00:09:32.559 And the angels there, they say, 00:09:32.659 --> 00:09:32.919 No. 00:09:34.259 --> 00:09:37.859 Jesus told you ahead of time that he would be raised from the dead, 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:41.279 physically, bodily, in the space-time matter universe. 00:09:41.279 --> 00:09:43.039 And some of you say, Well, wait a minute. 00:09:43.600 --> 00:09:46.879 I'm not so sure that I can believe all of this. 00:09:47.459 --> 00:09:51.059 I mean, maybe these women, they're so exhausted. 00:09:51.539 --> 00:09:52.500 They're so grieving. 00:09:53.240 --> 00:09:58.139 They've got this unprocessed trauma from having witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus. 00:09:58.639 --> 00:09:59.659 Maybe they're hallucinating. 00:09:59.799 --> 00:10:01.579 Maybe they're imagining things. 00:10:02.600 --> 00:10:07.879 And if you think that, you're actually not the first to doubt and to dismiss their story. 00:10:07.879 --> 00:10:10.220 In fact, in verse 9, it says, 00:10:10.439 --> 00:10:14.580 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the eleven and to all the others. 00:10:14.720 --> 00:10:15.779 And then in verse 11, it says, 00:10:16.120 --> 00:10:20.139 But they did not believe the women because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 00:10:22.220 --> 00:10:25.379 If the resurrection of Jesus seems like nonsense to you, 00:10:25.419 --> 00:10:27.379 if it seems like absolute rubbish, 00:10:28.559 --> 00:10:30.620 you are in really good company. 00:10:30.759 --> 00:10:34.639 Because it seemed that way to all the apostles as well. 00:10:34.639 --> 00:10:36.500 None of them believed it. 00:10:36.659 --> 00:10:42.120 Peter, James, John, all of Jesus' male disciples were skeptics. 00:10:42.500 --> 00:10:43.639 They said, This is absurd. 00:10:44.139 --> 00:10:45.080 This is ridiculous. 00:10:45.659 --> 00:10:47.399 This is irrational. 00:10:47.860 --> 00:10:48.799 This is unbelievable. 00:10:50.279 --> 00:10:53.000 Well, what is it that caused them to change their minds? 00:10:53.000 --> 00:11:02.279 What convinced them to go out and leave their homes eventually and give their lives and to even die 00:11:02.279 --> 00:11:09.539 for this message that Jesus had been raised to the life of the age to come with a new body? 00:11:10.600 --> 00:11:12.139 Why would they die for a lie? 00:11:12.259 --> 00:11:15.120 Why would they die for a legend that they made up? 00:11:15.320 --> 00:11:18.200 I mean, what is it that convinced them this was true? 00:11:18.200 --> 00:11:21.900 And if you notice in verse 12, it says that Peter, however, 00:11:23.060 --> 00:11:27.100 he got up and he ran to the tomb, bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, 00:11:27.200 --> 00:11:29.800 and he went away wondering, there's that word again, 00:11:29.879 --> 00:11:33.400 he was wondering to himself what had happened. 00:11:34.640 --> 00:11:42.259 See, Peter was intellectually open-minded and curious enough to go and examine the evidence for himself. 00:11:42.259 --> 00:11:48.240 It was absolutely essential that Peter heard that eyewitness testimony from the women, 00:11:49.080 --> 00:11:52.000 but he was not content with their conclusions, 00:11:52.519 --> 00:11:58.259 and so he wanted to personally and directly analyze the data and test and verify their hypothesis. 00:11:58.580 --> 00:12:04.019 And so it was essential that Peter would go to see the empty tomb and the grave clothes. 00:12:04.159 --> 00:12:06.639 And it's interesting that Luke emphasizes this. 00:12:07.399 --> 00:12:10.419 He says that Peter bent down to look inside the empty tomb, 00:12:10.419 --> 00:12:13.860 and he, quote, saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, 00:12:14.559 --> 00:12:21.939 and this is what seems to be the thing that causes Peter to wonder in his mind what has just happened. 00:12:22.159 --> 00:12:24.879 His mind is wondering, it's marveling, it's amazed. 00:12:25.439 --> 00:12:26.259 Why is that? 00:12:27.159 --> 00:12:37.000 Well, on Good Friday, Jesus' dead body had been wrapped in linen cloth with about 75 pounds worth of spices. 00:12:37.000 --> 00:12:45.960 And those liquid spices, they settled and they solidified like a cocoon around the shape of Jesus' body. 00:12:47.120 --> 00:12:54.879 And the only way, humanly speaking, that a body could be removed from such encrusted burial wrappings 00:12:54.879 --> 00:13:01.440 would be by cutting those strips of linen cloth from end to end 00:13:01.440 --> 00:13:06.440 and laying back each side so that you could pull the body out of the grave clothes. 00:13:07.820 --> 00:13:13.180 And when Peter and these women and other disciples came and they saw these strips of linen uncut 00:13:13.180 --> 00:13:18.180 and undisturbed, just as they had been when the body of Jesus lay within them, 00:13:18.220 --> 00:13:21.460 but the grave clothes were empty in the shape of Jesus' body, 00:13:22.920 --> 00:13:23.940 well, they were wondering. 00:13:23.940 --> 00:13:29.640 Jesus' resurrection body apparently passed through these grave clothes. 00:13:30.840 --> 00:13:34.800 And next week, we're going to talk about how, this is so totally bizarre, I get it. 00:13:35.560 --> 00:13:38.580 We're going to talk next week about Jesus' body, right? 00:13:38.640 --> 00:13:43.040 This glorified, amazing, crazy body and all of its powers. 00:13:44.300 --> 00:13:49.840 But, you know, Peter, at this point, he's heard the eyewitness testimony. 00:13:50.680 --> 00:13:53.500 He's heard about the message that God had sent. 00:13:53.500 --> 00:13:55.200 He's seen the empty tomb. 00:13:55.320 --> 00:13:56.799 He's seen those grave clothes. 00:13:57.639 --> 00:14:02.080 But that was not enough for Peter to go out and become a martyr for this message. 00:14:03.799 --> 00:14:08.580 Peter's skepticism could only be dispelled with the indisputable evidence 00:14:08.580 --> 00:14:11.480 of seeing the resurrected Jesus with his own eyes. 00:14:12.539 --> 00:14:17.679 And that's what verse 34 tells us, that the Lord has risen and he appeared to Simon. 00:14:17.779 --> 00:14:19.120 He appeared to Peter. 00:14:20.120 --> 00:14:23.000 Peter, along with many, many others, we're told in the New Testament, 00:14:23.500 --> 00:14:25.100 over 500 people. 00:14:25.200 --> 00:14:28.059 They saw the resurrected Jesus with their eyes. 00:14:28.179 --> 00:14:29.340 They heard him with their ears. 00:14:29.440 --> 00:14:31.220 They touched him with their hands. 00:14:31.700 --> 00:14:34.820 And they could not unexperience that experience. 00:14:34.820 --> 00:14:41.200 And so for those of you who are here and this message of the bodily resurrection of Jesus, 00:14:41.340 --> 00:14:43.720 it just seems like nonsense to you. 00:14:44.520 --> 00:14:46.900 We want you to know that you are ourselves, if we could do that, I would be a very rich man if I could build such a time machine. 00:15:34.240 --> 00:15:43.440 But since that's not possible to do for any period of historical inquiry, we can do this. 00:15:44.019 --> 00:15:45.120 A couple things for you. 00:15:45.180 --> 00:15:48.519 If you're wondering in your mind, here's some things you can do. 00:15:49.259 --> 00:15:52.799 First of all, you can, if you've never read the primary sources, 00:15:52.940 --> 00:15:58.240 if you've never just sat down and read the eyewitness accounts of the people who saw Jesus, 00:15:58.879 --> 00:16:00.240 I would just say, what are you waiting for? 00:16:00.240 --> 00:16:04.560 Go and listen to it. 00:16:04.639 --> 00:16:07.720 Go and examine the evidence for yourself. 00:16:07.840 --> 00:16:12.740 Go and see what it is that they claim to see and hear and touch. 00:16:13.080 --> 00:16:15.240 And ask yourself, why would they be making this up? 00:16:15.320 --> 00:16:16.680 Why would birth of the church? 00:16:53.680 --> 00:16:59.759 What best explains this new and utterly distinct worldview that came into being overnight? 00:16:59.940 --> 00:17:04.920 What best explains the explosion of the Christian movement throughout the Roman Empire 00:17:04.920 --> 00:17:08.460 over the next three centuries in the face of intense persecution? 00:17:08.460 --> 00:17:12.160 If Jesus didn't rise from the dead, 00:17:13.120 --> 00:17:19.299 what alternative explanation that's plausibly historical can we give for these strange events? 00:17:21.380 --> 00:17:27.120 I want to just encourage you that if you engage all the various hypotheses 00:17:27.120 --> 00:17:32.140 that this was a fraud, this was a hallucination, this was a legend, this is a metaphor, 00:17:32.140 --> 00:17:38.320 I think you'll conclude, you can conclude with your wandering mind 00:17:38.320 --> 00:17:44.060 that the bodily resurrection of Jesus makes the best sense of all the data. 00:17:45.400 --> 00:17:50.000 And the final thing I want to encourage you to do as you apply your wandering mind 00:17:50.000 --> 00:17:51.940 to examine all this evidence, 00:17:52.080 --> 00:17:57.759 I want you to consider the possibility that if Jesus died for you and if he's alive, 00:17:58.259 --> 00:17:59.820 then you can meet him. 00:17:59.819 --> 00:18:02.700 You can actually discover him for yourself. 00:18:02.819 --> 00:18:04.799 You can discover the reality that we're talking about. 00:18:04.919 --> 00:18:08.480 You might find that as you examine the evidence, 00:18:08.960 --> 00:18:11.799 that 00:18:39.340 --> 00:18:46.960 It's about a seven-mile walk, two and a half miles to walk from Jerusalem back to their home in Emmaus. 00:18:47.100 --> 00:18:49.940 And in verse 17, he tells us that their faces are downcast, 00:18:50.559 --> 00:18:54.000 which means that their hearts are heavy and downcast. 00:18:54.000 --> 00:19:00.059 And then when you look at the end of the story in verse 33, 00:23:41.759 Jesus begins to go through 00:23:41.759 --> 00:23:43.559 all the historical precedents, 00:23:43.559 --> 00:23:45.980 all of the prophetic promises, 00:23:46.240 --> 00:23:47.839 all the psalmist's prayers, 00:23:48.440 --> 00:23:50.039 and he shows his disciples 00:23:50.039 --> 00:23:52.359 a pattern that they just cannot see. 00:23:52.480 --> 00:23:53.839 And I imagine he began how God's king is rejected 00:25:07.300 --> 00:25:08.560 by the nations, 00:25:08.660 --> 00:25:11.120 he's rejected by even his own people, 00:25:11.360 --> 00:25:13.580 and yet he cries out to God 00:25:13.580 --> 00:25:14.680 and God rescues him, 00:25:14.800 --> 00:25:16.140 God vindicates him, 00:25:16.160 --> 00:25:17.560 and then I'm sure Jesus went on 00:25:17.560 --> 00:25:18.360 into the prophets, 00:25:18.539 --> 00:25:19.600 he went to Isaiah, 00:25:20.400 --> 00:25:22.420 Isaiah chapters 40 to 66, 00:25:22.640 --> 00:25:22.980 and he said, 00:25:23.360 --> 00:25:23.380 look,
